$80 STEELDIVE 1970 Vs $250 Seiko "5KX" (and $1,500 Captain Willard?)

- Recently picked up one of these Aliexpress specials. The STEELDIVE 1970 or SD1970 is a Chinese clone of a Seiko Captain Willard. While I don't have a $1,500+ Captain Willard to compare it to I do have a Seiko 5 Sports SRPD AKA 5KX. Sapphire, 200M WR, Solid end links and full lume bezel for $80? Fact is specs wise this cheap clone is closer to the $1,500 Captain Willard than it is the $250 5KX! It's not even a close competition!
I just tell people that the Addiesdive or steel dive is a micro brand
"it's a microbrand with seiko machine inside of it"
@@garynico9872several are!
Same. I tell them it's a micro brand with a seiko movement.
I got the steel dive Willard 2 months ago. I love this thing. Right on time!
Just ordered one for Just under $60. Still might buy a Seiko srpd55k1, but it's hard to justify when steeldive is making a watch that is just as good and cost less LOL. Great review.
Damn! That's a great deal. Mine was $92 about 4 months ago...and worth it at that price!
@crybabychrononaut saw the seiko in person... was not impressed, here in Thailand they want equivalent $320... USA I can get it for $200... make it make sense.
homage copy, whatever. I really don't care if seiko doesn't- their movement is in the watch... this one and addiesdive. I'll guarantee you nobody in my orbit will ever say " hey that's a nice fake willard ". they won't know anything except its a damn cool looking watch. 😊
True!
Same, majority of people these days don't even wear a watch and if they are wearing a watch it's usually a smartwatch.
I got the blue SD1970, it's a stunning watch for the money. Shame mine came with the pressed clasp.
Recently I conducted an experiment. The 5KX's lume continues to be visible in the darkness more than 9 (nine) hours long, after overcast day, and without recharging by a flashlight. Hoping, it would give somebody a reference.
Welcome to the party. Got mine like a year and a half ago and love it. Quality all the way for a lull of a price. By the way you can get it with a sterile dial.
Water resistance is not certified for steel dive - but hey how many people dive deeper than a pool or snorkelling - ok for this - mine had no issues 🤔
Exactly! Anyone who is a serious diver or going below 10-20 m in depth is going to have a actual real dive watch. The rest of us are frolicking around in pools LOL
Great review!
Wow it just destroys the seiko 5.
The orginal willard is 19mm strap size.
So 20 mm on the steeldive is not taken from the orginal design.
I think the 19 mm is a little bit off and it make it hard to get strapps that are 19 mm for sure when it is almost as non standard size..
One thing that I dislike is the coulor diffrence between the lume on the dial and the lume on the hands daytime (not in the dark).
It is not the same wite and tint of yellow..
Today you van get the a version with no logo.
But then it is the stamped clasp.
I'm turning my steeldive SD1970 into a true captain willward homage by putting on a genuine Seiko "great wave" caseback which thins 1mm in height; polishing out the steeldive signed crown with a file and some cape cod; and swapping the dial with a pro Willard "resist" one from Seikosis. It's gonna be great watch fam.
I rather this replica with a lot of expensive parts in it. Than pay 2k for the real one.
The original Cpt. Willard had a 150m water resistance
The one that costs over 1000 USD? Seems like it should
Nice video man…have the black, same new model with milled clasp, very happy. I wear this almost everyday. My blue dial watch is on order, so am I impressed with the quality. I swim with it but just slight concerned about links not being stainless steel and could possibly rust….Definitely subscribed.
The links are most definitely stainless steel. They should not rust
I don't have a Steeldive, but just got an Addiesdive with a white/silvery textured dial for $53 (American dollars).
I am generally happy, but there are some problems. Looking at many review pictures on Ali, I knew beforehand that alignment is going to be a lottery. Unfortunately, I lost.
I don't know if Steeldive has similar lottery going on with their alignment.
I have two other ’’Willards’’, from Heimdallr and from FiftyFour. I paid a lot more for them in 2018 and 2019, but the quality is basically on the same level as my Addiesdive.
A Ceramic bezel insert which is very important.
Not a cheap watch, Feels dope on the wrist.
I just got a blue one for $69 cad, and I really like the shade of blue.
Actually the 200m or 660’ depth is a shallow dive watch. 100m is great for average swimmers.
I just call the Steeldive a Chillard. (Chinese Willard)
LOL that works I guess
How do they do it for 100$. Amazing value
SD1970 and all other "Willard" brands have misaligned Dial indices on casual inspection.
I have this superb watch in black and also I bought the steeldive 1975 tuna in their green version, both watches are my all time favourites even more so than my original seiko’s 👏👍😉
the steeldive is a phenomenal value. they have beat Seiko at their own game
I have a Heimdallr Captain Willard. I was surprised at how well made it is for the price. Now I’m looking at this green Steeldive and thinking, “Hmmmm….”
You can find them for $51 today today is 23 July
Yup, love my Willard, just got my tactical frog V2 which comes in a steeldive box, same excellent quality and spec, arguably a better crystal, leading me to believe these come from the same factory?
Yes I've heard the tactical frog comes from the same factory as I'm sure a lot of these Ali brands do.
the SD1970 are gorgeous and worth more than the price they ask for. but you cant compare to the SPB151J1 seiko. i have both, and the seiko is not overrated neither. you pay for a gorgeous watch, with many detail way better than the steeldive, you also pay for the history behind, the brand etc. but even if we talk about the watch itself, i never regreted to pay 1200eu for it.
These things don't matter to me!
@@davidcrandall4958 lol ok ^^.. the seiko have a double dome saphire vs flat saphire, the movement is a 6r35 instead of a nh35, with a 70h power reserve, the steel dont look the same, way more grey like titanium , with a deeper color. the wristband is better quality, the bezel is softer to turn than the steeldive, and is aluminium instead of ceramic, making it not shiny, which is nicer than the glossy ceramic..the crown too is way softer to use. the hands are not flat like the steeldive... maybe this matter for you...😂
Where are the sterile options? Do you have a link? Nice upload, great comparison.
I wanted something different from black or blue divers that I own so, with some trepidation, I too bought a green one......and it's swell!...... 😊!
No sapphire.....Seiko uses a hard luck crystal.
I got this exact watch for 60usd....how in the hell do they make a profit?
You pay 3 or 4 more times for something with lower spec than micro brand Chinese watches . . But Seiko logo just pops out and gives you an over priced product with a very good history
Im not sure but I think you missed the info about the movement, a Seiko NH35A!
I did mention it at some point showing a picture of the movement. I also mentioned it has basically the same movement inside as my Seiko 5. It's a long video tho so I get it ;) thanks
I have the black and blue versions of the SD1970, they are great watches and I love them.
However, the title of your video is seeming to compare it with the SK5/SRPD, which is fair enough, but also the 'Captain Willard' re-release, but you don't have that watch to compare it with?!
Ceramic bezel….
good point I thought it was it definitely looks more shiney than any other diver I have with an aluminum bezel
Hi i have two SD 1970 WILLARDS one watch face being Black & the other Green ( the hulk) being a watch collector i own SEIKO watches real divers skx7 & 9. my conclusion champagne watch for soda money all the best from the UK.
steeldive wins
Or you could call it a beautiful watch
Why do you think it's necessary to explain your watch to everyone you encounter on the street?
I think you're kidding yourself if you actually believe that you could go scuba diving with this watch.
It says 200 m water resistant. I would argue that it can handle a splash or two.
Everyone knows a serious diver will not be taking this diving 😅
