    26:30 Actually the parking brake is push to apply and pull to release. Later 2015 models actually adopted an auto apply system which means the parking brake would be automatically applied in the event the transmission is in P (park) and the engine is shut down or the driver's door is opened while the seatbelt is unfastened. Very nice video! These cars may not be cheap to own or maintain, but they are worth every penny. Just have to have enough money set aside for anything that may go wrong. The W222 is probably still my favorite S-Class because although a new S-Class is out, the previous generation doesn't look outdated at all and they still have a lot to offer in terms of technology.

      Thank you!! I must be honest, it is a really nice car and it looks way better than the new one I agree. I like the headlights in the later years of this model. It probably can be retrofitted into older years like mine but I’m not very familiar with Mercedes coding and all that. I was in Berlin last week and saw a lot of this S class but all of them were the diesel 6 cylinder variant.

I've wanted to for many years now and was waiting for prices to come down below $30K, but the car market spiraled out of control so I could have bought one in 2020 and sold it for a profit. I have Genesis g80, thinking upgrading to sclass unsure what model tho looking at s500. GENESIS has been best car i have ever owned so far, far superior to my c63 which im also selling at auction this week. I want to upgrade to something with same type of comfortability but with bit more power. Planning to just have one car and keep it simple. Something with power and smoothness. The genesis is like driving on a cloud, so im hoping the s500 much similar although yet a superior car is, im hoping its more suitable but im worried about the maintenance. genesis has been a dream. Its super quiet and i drive long drives 8 hours plus sometimes and never felt uncomfortable, could literally keep driving for another 4 to 5 hours with no problems. Never had any major issues with the car, only changed rotors and some buttons here and there. Now to make a decision if i should go s500/ s63 , s400 (altho slower it may be more comfortable and quiet) or a different car, possibly another g80 but newer.
      How has the maintaince been has many problems occurred in the s500 "grind my gears" pleas let me know thank you

      @@jamiefreedom8320 sorry just saw this since I wasn’t tagged in it, I didn’t get notification. Not sure if it’s still related but maintenance wasn’t that bad. Around $400-$450 for the regular interval (I forgot if it’s A or B) and I think around $700 for the bigger one. I did battery and brakes and it was around $1800 or $2500 I forgot. Overall it’s more expensive than a BMW to be honest but BMW 7er would probably be a lot more fun to drive just not as comfy :D
      Hopefully you got a car you love!

    I just watched your driving impressions video. This video was equally excellent. I’m currently in the market for 15-17 S550. I went to see one that got away a few weeks back. It was diamond silver with the sport package and 19in AMG wheels. It was absolutely gorgeous but I prefer your spec and wheels. That car had almost every single option minus designo leather, rear center console, and fridge (maybe more). One thing it did have was ABC/MBC suspension. That made me hesitant a little because the service on those hydraulic suspensions are more complicated than the air shock.

      Thank you 😊 were you able to find another one? This S class is such a head turner… I wish it drove as good as it looks. I traded in the car with 84k miles and the suspension was still in great working order. Everything was in great working order actually minute the transmission, it didn’t get worse but the hard shift would appear occasionally. Also a burnt oil smell would come from under the hood (not a strong smell) but dealer said all is good lol… so idk but the car served me well. Hopefully you find the spec you’re looking for!

      Thank you for watching! The service is pretty expensive. The brakes cost around $3200. Oil change is around $180. The interval services like service B cost around $250. I smell burning oil now when I park it so that is probably a leaking valve cover gasket which will definitely cost money!

      I like nice scents including leather scents but this car doesn’t have any smell so I add those. I forgot to mention in the video that this car has a scent diffuser bottle as part of the HVAC system in resides in the glovebox but you have to use Mercedes bottles and I find them unnecessarily overpriced and they dint have a lot of fragrance options. I also forgot to mention that this car has an ionizer built in!! So much stuff in this car.

    @samshare2146 Рік тому +3

    A fully loaded 2015 S-Class would have been $140k, but this model lacks quite a few options...many that you have mentioned in the video.
    My '13 S-Class is fully loaded except for the fridge (can always be added later) and retailed close to $140k . The base MSRP was $97k and has the AMG Sport Pkg Plus One ($7k), the designo interior Pkg ($15k), the designo Platinum Black exterior ($5k), the rear seat Pkg ($3k), the Pano roof ($1k), Night Vison Assist ($2k), Piano Black trim ($2k), Splitview Front entertainment ($1k), rear entertainment ($2k), and the premium sound system ($6k).
    iirc, the Pano roof became standard with 2014.
    The only options I see on your car are the AMG Sport Pkg ($4k), AMG rims ($2k), Driver Assistance Pkg ($3k), Executive Rear Seat Pkg ($4k), Premium Pkg ($5k), and Heated Steering Wheel ($500). You have a well-appointed S-Class, but it is not fully loaded. The Burmester 3D ($6k) is one of the best sound systems and is a big option you are missing. As you noted, the standard Burmester isn't bad and is still better than most auto sound systems. You might want to fiddle around with the settings (equalizer, balance, fade, etc.) to optimize it.
    You’ve got a great car and I hope you are enjoying it. You mentioned that the mileage sucks...odd because I get 27-28 on my '13 and 24-25 on my '09 (naturally aspirated) on highway...and I know mileage went up with your gen by another couple mpg due to better turbos and a better tranny. Mixed driving routinely gives me, in sport mode, at least 21 on both of my cars. I found the performance of both cars to be sublime...more than enough. After all, both cars can do 0-60 as fast as a Lamborghini Countach (5 sec). I’m just curious why you considered performance to be bad. What were you expecting? M5 level performance? This is a luxury sedan...not a sports sedan. It’s supposed to waft you, not jar you. If you want that type of performance, you should consider an AMG S63. As for the noise/comfort level…again, I’m not sure what your reference is. Both my cars are extremely quiet and outside my Audi A8L and Rolls Royces, I haven’t found any cars that are as quiet.

    • @GrindMyGears
      @GrindMyGears  Рік тому +1

      How do you get 27mpg?? That’s amazing. I fill the tank pretty much every week… I agree with you that the power is smooth and delivery is supposed to be gradual and I like that. In fact I love the engine and it has a lot of grunt but the real problem is the garbage transmission Mercedes keeps using. It’s a pile of trash! Dim witted even in sport mode… slow to shift and doesn’t know what gear to go to! The worst transmission in a 6 figure car in my opinion. They can do much better at least make it shift fast and select the right gear. I don’t have to compare it to M5, even a 328i shifts faster through the ZF 8 speed and it knows what gear to select… I no longer have the Mercedes. I traded it in 2 month ago for a 2019 M5 competition that I haven’t posted about yet… but will soon 😊 enjoy the Merc! It’s a great car… I just can’t deal with it anymore lol.

      @samshare2146 Рік тому

      @@GrindMyGears Well, 27 is what I can get on the highway...more if I am going from Central NY to NYC as that is a very slight downgrade over the trip.
      I'm not a hypermiler, but I do drive a bit more conservatively than most people. Like I said, for performance, a sports sedan like the S63 or S65 would have been a better choice...or even the AMG GT. The regular S-Class is geared to more sedentary driving...smooth acceleration and no sudden downshifts (which can be more jarring when it hits the powerband).
      Up to the 2017, the S-Class only had a 7-speed gearbox. Newer S-Classes (2018 onwards) have the 9-gear transmission. This is a bit quicker changing gears since it wants to try to keep engine speed to maximize mileage.
      The key to mileage is to find the right speed where the gear you are in gives sufficient power to stay with traffic but remains barely above idle speed (and therefore using the least amount of fuel). I also coast as much as possible. That's just how I learned to drive on a manual.
      It sounds like you enjoy more spirited driving. The Bimmer will likely suit your driving, especially the M5 which is a sports sedan that is geared (pun intended) for better performance. There was a time I liked to drive like that and just for the sake of driving, I would just hop in a car and go for a few hours with no particular destination in mind...basically a point A-back to-point A. One of the best driving cars I've had was a BMW.
      I don't really care to do much of that anymore. In fact, I prefer to be driven while relaxing in the back of the Maybach.
      I am considering a BMW again and it is likely to be the i8. I tested my friend's car earlier this year and was pleasantly surprised. I hate going used, but I missed it when it was in production. It isn't the sportiest car out there, but it is sufficient for my needs and I have been told it can be tuned to low 3's zero-to-60. OTOH, there are rumors that BMW might make a second gen that is M based....the i8M. I might just want to wait for that.
      Oh, I look forward to your review of your BMW! :)

They charge $195 just to diagnose and this fee is probably different from one dealer to another. I put new set of tires in less than two year! Previous set wore out within 20k-25k miles I believe (I have to double check). The car is heavy on maintenance/upkeep just FYI. Also recently the interior lighting flashes on passenger side on certain colors like green and blue I think so now I have the interior lights on red all the time which always reminds me with red light district for some reason LOL. As of now, I smell a little oil burn from outside but dealer says no visible oil leak. There is a faint clunk sound on rough roads… might be a shock going bad or ball joint but it will be waste of money to have the dealer diagnose it. They’ll happily charge you $450 diagnostic fee then tell you we can’t hear or feel anything. Car mechanics usually aren’t very smart and good at diagnosis but they’re good in replacing stuff. Anyways, auxiliary battery died couple weeks ago so I had it replaced along with the 80k miles service. You can’t ignore maintenance in this car so keep that in mind… you have to do the maintenance schedule or else you will end up with bigger breakdowns. Other than that, no major failure yet. Transmission still bangs occasionally between 3-2 shifts but hasn’t gotten worse. Also the car eats tires and brakes since it’s very heavy… I use paddle shifters to shift down and slow it down instead of using the brakes… that’s a pro tip ;)

    why would you not buy a Mercedes again? Of course it's a comfortable car and not a dynamic car, but how do you compare it to BMW 5 series? Is it greatly better riding for example?

    • @GrindMyGears
      @GrindMyGears  2 роки тому +3

      I must be honest and say the new (2021) Mercedes cars have come along way in tech. The biggest problem with prior years Mercedes is the tech side is dimwitted and slow and would drive you crazy then comes the driving part. If you enjoy agile driving, response, connectedness and like magically reading your mind then you should try an M car… not AMG, but M car. Normal BMWs with M package are better than ones without M package but there are certain details only BMW M can deliver from their entire lineup. Back to S class, it’s comfy and looks awesome (specially in this white) and very safe but you won’t enjoy driving it at all. You’ll love being the passenger!! We mostly bought because of long road trips we usually take and even 7 series can’t deliver the same comfort because it’s trying to be a driver car and while it’s not very great at it, it’s not very comfortable either. So at the end it’s your choice and what you decide to compromise. An E class will be more comfy than 5 series but I’d take 5 series over any day. Even C class and 3 series… BMW always performs better and more enjoyable to drive than peers of Mercedes even if on paper some Mercedes models might have more horsepower.
      Why would I not buy a Mercedes again? Because you only need one in your garage and the S class is the only one to get because you’ll get the best comfort and safety Mercedes offer and those are generally the biggest two aspects they’re known for. Sorry I was all over the place with my answer but I hope it made sense. My opinion is definitely different than others and while there’s nothing wrong with that, unfortunately it makes me look spoiled and a snob… but I’m not haha. I just start with the value for what you pay and look into what a car has to offer for what you’re paying in comparison with something else of similar price. For example a new Honda Accord versus a gently used BMW of similar price or maybe cheaper (thank god they drop in price quickly) and then things start to look differently… very differently!

    • @p0werl0ve
      @p0werl0ve 2 роки тому +1

      @@GrindMyGears Many thanks for the detailed response. So I take it that Mercedes is more comfortable but less engaging for the driver. I own an E91 and am considering what my next car should be. I think there are only 2 ways to go - either all way comfort or all way sport (considering I have only 1 car, which needs to be drivable and not only a weekend car for fun). As sport options, I was considering BMW 335 xdrive or Audi S4. An older S class, or 7 series in terms of comfort. By the way how would you compare BMW and Audi for the same price? Being a BMW guy you are probably anti Audi, lol, but you can't deny there are pretty good quattro options, don't you think?

    • @GrindMyGears
      @GrindMyGears  2 роки тому

      @@p0werl0ve no actually I’m not anti Audi at all! When I was shopping for SUV, I looked at SQ3 and SQ5 but I hated the interior. Also their tech features weren’t many… at the time I was looking I don’t think I was able to find one with active cruise control and side collision avoidance and auto brake/stop… I also looked into Porsche Macan and it didn’t have any of those features!! The sales man couldn’t even confirm any of this and the car had active cruise control but won’t do traffic stop and go etc. I ended up with X3 M40i with all those features. The Audi interior in preowned ones I saw looked old and worn but the car had very little miles. Plastic top layer peeling and leather had lines in it and steering wheel looked like it had 100k miles. They don’t seem to be made of quality if you’re buying used. Since you have a BMW already (and an excellent one) you’re going to have a hard time replacing that one lol. Try the S4 and S3 if smaller size is ok with you as I heard it’s a lot of fun. My friend had a 2004 A4 and I drove it from Indianapolis to Chicago and was a lot of fun! Broke down a lot on him (I fixed it several times for him) and was mostly sensors going out. Not sure what budget you’re keeping for this move but take a look at newer M3’s and M4’s 2016-2018… sometimes you come across a sweet deal on one but it’s a tough market right now.

Then it goes off if an incoming car appears and then the incoming car is gone so you would expect the high beam to come back quickly right? Regarding the noise, you might want to try quieter tyres, it makes a huge difference. The S class statistically has one of the most quiet cabins, so if that's not enough for you, you should probably go for a Maybach or Rolls Royce. Also, it indeed handles like a boat, so it should be ridden gentle. If you try to drive an S class too hard... you and the car won't like it. And judging by your preference for BMW M, your boundary of "too hard" is very high. I don't know, maybe the car isn't really designed for US roads. Because here in Europe the car is an absolute dream to drive. I also dislike the sticking buttons and stuff, one of the biggest disappointments in my opinion. A car of this segment shouldn't have issues like that.
