I m 50 years old and i really miss 70s 80s and even 90s, after septembe 11 2001 everithing changes for bads.
This is actually one of the coolest documentaries I've seen on the subject. Straight from the 1970s lowrider scene! Wow. What a trip it must have been back in those days to see that jumping competition impala come out of that garage.
As a Bay Area born Pacific Islander from the 60s I've watched and admired low riders from all over. I especially admired the talent and pride of the Mexican American community displaying the art they cruise in. Love it
Guam baby!!
Hafa gatchong? Todo mauleg?
I'm feeling Ucey today 🤗

My father grew up in East LA. As a teenager in the 70’s he use to cruise around in my Tata’s Ford LTD with bricks in the trunk. Lol. Cruisin with his friends on Broadway talking to girls.
gotta do what you gotta do lol
The original way to do it
I applied and received a Lowrider Magazine scholarship back in the 90s. It was used to pay for my books. Thanks LM! I'll never forget.
As a hot rod or myself I still respect low riders. The cleanest other cars the artwork they put into it. Stuff I don’t see you in the car world anymore. But I know it’s still out there. Keep on going brother Lowriders. God bless you all
Me growing up in Santa clara since the 70's reminds me of cruising my 66 caprice in San Jo. Tony's mufflers was a place to get your springs lowered still there by the old greyhound station. King N Story was the place to cruise after a night at studio 47. Hammer n Lewis is a store currently in downtown to get your zoot suit and stacey adams. Just to name a few of hot spots in the day. Them were the days.....
I remember that mural as a kid going to the Chaparral market in San Jose...i lived on S.22nd street.
Within the first 2 mins of the video starting, (audio off ) I recognized the mural on the side of the building Chaparral Supermarket in San Jose, CA . Great memories growing up in San Jose
I grew up in ESSJ in the 70s and 80s seeing the lowrider movement grow. Great documentary. 😎💪
When it was known that we were Mexican-Americans or Chicano.
Not Latino not Mexican.
We started the low rider onda!
Chicano and Proud💪🏼
You are absolutley correct XB Chicano or Mexican American when I was growing not what the Goverment wants to call us Latino no country called Latinous
Hispanic no country called Hispanica
Pure 100% Genuine Chiano parts from 100% Mexicano parents
Your Mexican with a Americanized
Mindset born in U.S /native
Damn this vlog brings back great memories and living through this period of time. It wasn’t just the cars, it also was the style of clothes, culture and attitude. Not long I finally sold all my Lowrider magazines in a yard sale I had.
Low riders are world wide now, from all walks of life! I’m not a low rider but my relatives (uncles in theirs seventies) from northern New Mexico (Espanola) are and they have some show winning trucks and cars. Thanks for the rewind of time and my youth!
The Española Valley has a legendary low rider scene. I grew up in Los Alamos, and would go down there on the weekends to cruise Riverside Dr. in my lifted Toyota.
Totally unexpected when I saw 1979. This documentary was done without bias---I found it done with respect highlighting the good and some challenges with the culture. Well done!
Watching this video it reminded me of the 80s growing up around low riders and Chicano art.
Beautiful culture!
Loved those old Cadillacs in the video...!! You hardly find those anymore. I've seen a couple of them, Not long ago, owned by great men who take care of them like the men in the video must have taken care of theirs...man! Wow wow, RESPECT to those who put so much Love and pride to their rides!
You can see it in their faces.... Its well deserved pride for being unique,...they each stand out!
I miss San Jose! Was there during this time.
Low rider people are the best!
'79 was the year I returned to the US after being in South Africa for 10+ years. Things really changed. Major respect to the owners/customizers of these rolling works of art..
I'm assuming you where happy with apartheid
Lol
@@rollinthunder8671 you would be making assumptions with no basis in fact. I was under 10yo when I went there in '68 and then returned in '79. I didn't disrespect anyone, went to African churches and wasn't racist in any outreach efforts I was involved in. You wouldn't be a woke virtue signaler by any chance, would you?
@@rollinthunder8671south africa was better under apartheid in every single way.
the blacks have destroyed the once Jewel of Africa. well done communists
@@telcobilly ....no but my family was born there during apartheid
The stories they would tell me where egregious.
So my disdain for my comment is rooted in such
My apologies
@@steviechampagne lol your the lowest form of s h I t .
I wouldnt even give you to my plants.
not sure what i was expecting, but this was way more interesting than anticipated. i like watching these old clips
70s lowrider era was top tier so much estilo and uniqueness
Here in Tucson, Az. in 1979 I had a 1970 Chevelle Malibu Low Rider ..later in 1990 I made it a Street Rod with wide tires all around i kept the hydraulics for lift in the front & rear
Born in ‘79 , great to see how the Lowrider scene was poppin’ well before me. Didn’t have much knowledge of the Nor Cal scene in those days , so cool to see. We are the same. Saludos desde the Southern part.
Dam remember that big painting when I was a kid it was in San Jose. In the 80s it was the store el chaparral wow
I lived in California for years Sacramento San Diego I lived in the barrio in South Sac and seen it on a daily basis for years most of the time they were a good bunch of people they treated everybody with respect and they had values and character. I've seen some really cool stuff it is definitely an art and a tradition I love it and I love my Mexican American brothers and sisters in fact I moved here to Kansas in the 1967 Pontiac Bonneville lowrider pearl white paint job with pinstripe detailed motor airbrush on the inside of the hood wide white tires everything was electric beautiful car but when I got here the roads weren't made for lowriders and I ended up selling it missed that car
I remember when this documentary came out. I was 20 and owned a ‘74 Caprice cut up all the way around. It sure brings back memories. Thanks for posting.
"A fancy lowrider is called a baaad ride" 😄👌
I love this. Even Japan has a chicano lowrider movement going on.
Chicano influence is a global thing
What a great time to be alive! The 1970s was the best decade to experience in the USA! From 1965 to 1979 to be precise!
What if you got drafted and sent to Vietnam instead ?
I love seeing old videos of where I’m from and when I’m from. Thanks for that.
As a San Jose native, this video is awesome. Thanks for the upload!
Being Hispanic myself. I love Low Rider's and all kinds of Custom car's. I'm from Southern California and where I grew up. That's all you saw. This culture also teaches mechanical skills .Hard work and Dedication. Very cool Video.
Willie G and the Midniters, the town I live in my favorite rola, cruzing on my 53 Chevy truck five window.
Beautiful card and fun stories behind them. Thanks for sharing that.
Thank you for this lost and footage. Its about time. One day, i too will have a low riding car, please before i day
Best I can do is run my 91 Jetta coupe on 13s and crank the song lowrider ,and dream 🙂
At least it's low, the front spoiler lip won't clear a Bic lighter standing up🙂
I can't modify it permanently, my dad bought it new.
Wow! I grew up on the east side of San Jose during those years. Had lots of low rider buddies. Sounds funny how the white announcers describe things.
those old tiny chain steering wheels sucked. I wrecked my '63 Impala twice because I couldnt make the f'n turn. Chingale!
Damn 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️that’s a horrible loss 🥲I’m sorry to hear that
Innovators and pioneers right there!
dad told me during the day, that they would yank leaf springs and cut coils and add bags of cement to get down low.
$1600 for a paint job?? Man, those were the days.
Hard to believe the bay lowrides being from San Diego I think of us and LA and Texas. I live near Highland Ave one of the infamous lowrider spots in so cal
R.I.P Sonny..
I remember my older brothers and my uncles with classic lowriders and Cadillacs back in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up u don't see that here anymore in TX very rarre..
This pump's me up Proud to be from San Jose
✊💯
I was born and raised in SF Mission Dost. but spent my summers in Eastside San Jose with my cousins in the early 90s. It was the wild west out there back in those days but it was a fun time to be alive.
Thanks for posting! Good stuff!!
Great Reporting, he's coming from a "just the facts" angle. I like that.
CORRECTION: Mexicans have been in California, San Jose before there was a United States!! Their Spanish ancestors named it California!!
I came to San Jose California in 1988 from Bristol TN. I had never seen a low rider or met anyone from Latin decent.
To this day I love true lowriders and the real culture that comes with it.
I used to cruise the El Camino in Sunnyvale. love low riders. even had a 76 Monte that I did a cheap LA drop on.later in life . I never made it over to king street. i.heard you'd get jumped as a white boy going over there. I sold my 62 chev stepside I lo lo'd 8 years ago. man I miss it.
Very cool video. Makes me have a new respect for low riders.
Awesome video - thank you
Damn I wish lowriding cost the same nowadays 😂
The custom paint jobs of the low riders really inspired me to learn how to do custom paint jobs myself. I’m a muscle car fan and like to go fast. However I always admire the work and detail that goes into the low riders.
I used to love to cruise in my friends lowrider's back in the 70s. We would all hang out from all small towns that would come together n cruise...💕
Riviera boat tail, nice
The “Bar-e-o” 😂
Q: "Do you know why lowriders have such small steering wheels? "
A: "So you can steer while wearing handcuffs."

I had a job at a 7-11, Alum Rock and S. 34th St. in East San Jose back in the 1980's for a while. Only job I've had outside of the military where I openly carried a pistol. On Friday and Saturday nights as things got out of control outside, we'd lock up, turn off the lights and sit low behind the counter for the odd errant bullet.
One night a woman was raped right around the corner and sought refuge in the store. I called SJPD and they came out and took a report, she was traumatized, but it seemed totally routine to them. I can't say I miss that job, nor East San Jose.
Low Riders are cool though.
Retro gold.
Boat tail rivy is lookin good 👍
yeah that was tight
Thanks Pop64
Love the low riders ❤❤❤❤❤❤
what is the large silver nut on the block for at 08:24? I have onefrom my old pump I had 22 years ago in a bag with a ball and spring, so its some kind of check valve but what did it do in these old steel blocks?
I liked all but the safari suit.
I like that low rider Firebird @ 2:00
"I didn't have a job,..I didn't have the money,...finance a shiny automobile"
$50-$150,000 in a car,.....not one word about how to,..."finance" it?
Damn,.......I was trying to learn something?
Ceskoslovenska.
Those were the days when inflation wasn't out of control, were Mexicans could live in San Jose and drive a 75? Montecarlo, in 1979
Those where the days omg really
This is BEAUTIFUL 👍👊🤜🤛☝️
I'm not a low rider, but they are pretty cool. I like ALL custom cars and trucks.
Born N Raised San Jo Cali ❤️
It’s a way of life my friend
That little chain steering wheel was invented so the owner can drive with the handcuffs on.
Thank you for this video I love 70's and 80's lowrider videos 😁😎👍
Where the hell did you find this, this is fascinating
Great piece of history, TY , and not for nothing, but over 100,000 views and no one hits like or Subscribe? Check the other videos, looks like some great shyt! Happy Thanksgiving and sending love from NY , although we barely have any Lowlows here, been reading LRM since the 90s here in Queens NY , and always respected the culture, but here in the East Side they are not popular or well respected, I always wished Lowriding was a thing here, but it’s not? Made its the horrible streets or weather but either way, I’ll always love them! FTW
WOW. !!!!! COOL. L O C O !!!!!
The low rider culture is an amazing part of the history of custom cars, but they went all the way with hydraulic rams to Slam these babies to the pavement or lift off like a rocket, God Bless the Low Riders
These dudes are now old men telling the youngsters when I was your age we had it going on and the youngsters laugh...but they don't understand... they did have it going on.
Wait they had a t.v in their cars back then ... Well damn.
Bad ride... Love how they say it
I never realized that old song is saying Low-Ri-Der... lol wow
As a SJ resident since the early 60's I've always wondered what the term 'Chicano' actually meant. It was never defined when the word was popular in the 70's. And it's no longer in use today so it makes me wonder even more.
💪🏾🇲🇽💯%
LA is the Lowrider capital of the World!
No lol 😂 this has been a California thing you guys are just in Hollywood
At 1:40 gas prices .69 cents a gallon in California
Gas was lower quality too back then
Orale Raza! Keep our culture going. Please check any youngster trying to talk like a black guy and especially using the "N" word.. that's a NO NO
still going strong
What do you have against primates?
The capital of the low rider culture it always has being the Southern California ,,,, east Los , sur califas ✊🏻🇲🇽🇺🇸
That’s just it everyone knows about the Lowrider culture in LA but San Jose Northern California has had its own uniqueness to add to it. Lowrider magazine started in SJ with talent like the HOMIES artist David Gonzalez from Richmond. While attending SJSU the Homies were created , Teen Angel yes is from down South moved up North to work for Lowrider Mag and it was in Northern California we’re that magazine started also . Andy didn’t invent hydraulics he made it where anyone can come to a store and buy the whole set up . Again from San Jose still to this day StreetLow magazine is still active in the streets. See the thing is LA is always in the movies .One movie to mention back in 79” was Duke of Earl filmed in LA and parts were in San Jose . Hammer and Lewis has been in business since 1920. It has been around for along time catering the Chicano community.San Jose has rich Chicano roots that many don’t know about. It’s not a North/South thing it’s a Cultura thing all over the world now. But yes it’s roots go deep In San Jo we have always had a strong number in gente out here similar to East Los. It’s time we get some recognition. That’s all ✌🏼
those prices back then tho
All 6 of my cars are an extension of my personality!!!
All of my 6 electric extensions are the personality of my car.

Put your dildo away.
I wouldn't say that out loud.
Alot of that paint style/ lowered cars came from the Rods and Sleds of the '50s era. Car builders such as Larry Watson and George Barris were doing this first.
Bay love ❤
Sir can I see your license….ahhh it’s on the bumper man
Low riders is not a L.A thing its a mexican thing.. get it straight people 🇲🇽 💪🏽
This is awesome but keeping everything original is a better investment when you’re going to sell it 😢this is all about the owners liking -respect -
They definitely got one thing right, hydraulics make a bad for a bad ride, bags are the way to go
