Interesting it is how some fine orchestras are never widely recorded as others are, for this along with the youth orchestra in Brazil is one of the finest I've heard and that includes the Chicago Orchestra several of whose players I studied with in high-school and college. The sonorities are so brilliant and powerful in the winds and brasses with not the least bit of strain on their embouchures. My heartiest congratulations to both the conductor and teachers of these performers. Erick Tippett Retired Musician/Teacher Chicago, Illinois
Berlioz was often known to write parts for instruments that typically take a back-burner.The man playing the solo in the opening is on the English Horn (Cor Anglais) - not the oboe. In fact, there is a section in Damnation of Faust where HB writes for five English Horns playing a series of chords together - interesting.A composer ahead of his time.
George Murphy I like his symphony fantastique. Talk about ahead of his time. That had a lot of sound effects in it produced by the instruments themselves. Pitch bending, col legno (i think that's how you spell it- it's when string players bounce the wodden part to the bow on the strings), it's amazing.
A composer ahead of his time... in his day the "Romantic" style of music was a revolutionary idea mostly by Germans like Bethooven and Carl Maria Von Weber. He brought the new style to his native France.
Indeed! To think that he wrote the Symphonie Fantastique just 3 years after Beethoven's 9th, and some people at the premiere (with the March to the Scaffold) would have seen the tumbrels taking people to the guilloutine!
I still love the cello player. Her feet do exactly along, her toes, but her heels: the count and after the count, and the rest. She does it with her whole body, she is a musician throughout her body, in every fiber.
Beautiful shot, well captured. Good direction of this recording. The director has fully empathized with the intention of the piece of music. Beautiful, this recording. Greetings from Holland.
Great performance from a great composer Hecdtor Berlioz. Great performance, great musicians, young and pure, but they are classic-performed, A great tribute even to the musician film director. He or she was ecectly to the point to be close up the musisians who played at that moment. Great clip on this You Tube Site, Greetz from a fan from Holland./
A much younger MTT performed this Overture on stage at the Meadow Brook outdoor theatre many years ago. We knew we were in for a treat when he carefully and energetically wiped the soles of his shoes on the podium several times before starting, We were NOT disappointed!
The UA-cam Symphony Orchestra is a global endeavor devoted to sharing the love of music and celebrating humanity's vast creative diversity.Musicians selected to perform in the orchestra were invited to Sydney, Australia in March, 2011 where they worked with world-renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and received coaching by leading musicians from the world's top orchestras. The week culminated in a Grand Finale concert at Sydney Opera House which was live stream to millions around the world.

I think the cor anglais player may be a bit sharp Ok I just watched this again and had the same feeling (and I didn’t see this comment until afterwards)
i still love the cello player, because she makes me happy, because she makes music completely and totally absorbed in her game. I think she's a toppie.
Look I was just giving the YTSO the praise they deserved on such a wonderful performance. I love the CSO! They are one of the best orchestras in the world and they come from my home city so I take much pride in the orchestra. Although they are such a prestigious orchestra, they do have some rare questionable performances. I feel like the YTSO may have done a better job with this performance of this piece than the live performance I went to. Just an opinion. No disrespect for any orchestra.
Yes this is a very accomplished orchestra. But MTT is taking the opening coranglais solo too fast. His tempo is around 60bpm as opposed to the 52 indicated by Berlioz. It is a sublime melody written for a sublime instrument and, as brilliant a musician as he is, in this instance MTT does a disservice to the composer.
Could well be. The whole building has had enormous trouble as a music venue ever since it was built, because it was designed for its amazing exterior shape. content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2097247,00.html

I usually ignore statements comparing orchestras, performers, etc., but to suggest that this performance is the equal, or superior, to the Chicago Symphony is patently absurd. Happily, there is a recording of this piece with the CSO under Claudio Abbado on You Tube. Give it a listen and then reconsider your observation. Or, better yet, don't reconsider it: just vow to temper your remarks a bit. Incidentally, this is a very good performance. Bravo.

One of my all time favorites! I was introduced to this piece when in Florida All State orchestra ... way back.... 1975
I’m actually doing FL all state this year and this is our audition excerpt!
the first page of this piece is quickly becoming one of my favorite pages in all of classical music
Playing this right now. LOVE. This orchestra is amazing!
Undoubtedly one of the best performances of this piece...BRAVO!!!!
Music is colourblind! It is universal! This is a youth Orchestra in what looks like the Sydney Opera House with Michael Tilson Thomas! Great playing!
Magistrale interprêtation et excellente prise de vue !!!!

This is probably the best and most fun piece I ever played as a low brass player.
Many performances of this piece rely on volume to make their point.
This ensemble dials back the noise and lets the music shine through.
Oh nice Viola solo part ^^
Greatest performance, this one means make a video of classical music!

No would could cram more music into nine minutes than Berlioz. No one could cram more music into TWO minutes,
I didn't know that UA-cam had a symphony orchestra. This version seems a little faster than I'm used to hearing it, but I like it.
Wow. This is a great recording! I'll use it to study the piece.
Such marvelous musical composition, so beautifully interpreted! Thank you!
Why was the tubist on stage? There is no part written for tuba...
This was probably one of several opus to be played during that specific concert. I also noticed the choir in the back and thought the same.
I love this part.

the conductor just chilling when the entire orchestra plays as dramatically as they can:
Looks like the great Michael Tillson-Thomas conducting.
Don't know if it's the engineering or the hall acoustics but there's a lack of depth in the sound, considering it's such a large orchestra.
