    Reminds me of a funny incident while attempting the removal of the cv bearing by whacking it with a rubber mallet, the bearing suddenly came off along with all the balls which rolled down the driveway and into the street. I ran after them before they'd a chance to slip away into the wooded area across the street and luckily managed to retrieve them.

    I was just finishing changing my outer CV boot a few minutes ago and when I was tightening the second clamp, I realized the inner CV boot is also bad, nothing beats doing the same thing twice

    A couple years ago, I got the clicking, so I looked and both boots were torn. I had them replaced at the local mechanic, and the one on the right rattled whenever I went over a bump (another garage had said it was probably the remanufactured brake caliper that had been recently installed). So, they replaced that one, and the sound was even worse, so they replaced it again. It seems to be OK now. Last week, I had just about gotten home and I heard a noise exactly like a seal barking (as in, the sea creature), and when the noise happened, it pulled to the right (I think). I stopped and I tried to turn the wheel all the way to the right to look at the left axle and I couldn't even turn the wheel all the way! So I backed up a bit, was able to turn it, and saw the split boot on the left axle. So I had the car towed to the mechanic and sure enough, it was the left axle. The mechanic said he'd never seen one fail that way! I'm glad it failed right by my house when I was going 10 mph and not on the highway!

    Great video. This seems to be an issue across all brands, like you said. I had a Subaru Outback that had a torn boot and the grease went all over the exhaust so I could smell it burning right away. Some think that the placement of the exhaust so close to the boot causes premature failure, but I'm not sure since this seems to happen to a lot of cars.

    Tiguan 2011 does vibrate heavily on the highway and I also noticed the vibration when I am fully turning the vehicleto the right on reverse or on a U-turn. I will sure to look under. If its not leaking could it wear out? I am at 138K on tiguan. Thanks to you few DIY are keeping it going.

    I got one failure for ya. Purchased a 2000 vw beetle for cheap, and noticed how the suspension would pop. Grill is busted on drivers side, and fender has a crack close to the headlight. This car was sold to me as a project car. I looked under it a couple of days ago and what I found kinda surprised me. I've not seen this kind of problem before, but I'm sure someone must have. It looks to me like the previous owner went over a curb or did a dukes of hazard, but I'll bet they went over a curb. The strut has pushed through the steering knuckle and got into the boot of the cv joint! I've never seen anything like that before. Gonna replace the shaft and the struts. I haven't torn it down yet, so I don't know if I'm gonna need to replace the knuckle but I just thought it was worth mentioning this as another way a cv boot can fail.

    Hi Charles, I have a 2013 Touareg TDI and the rear CV axle outer boot split like you described. The repair manual says to that you should use a axle puller jig to remove the axle once you have the upper suspension arms, lower strut mount, and lower rear suspension arm removed. Then you swing the hub assembly out while you use the puller to push the axle through the unit bearing. Can a standard auto puller work instead? ‭Seems that you can pull the rotor, and then press the axle out using the unit bearing hub as an anchor point.

    Good video, thanks. Any way to reduce the chances of tearing or a way to reseal the cuts with some kind of special material sealant? 2 Honda's now each with a far turning radius that probably exceeds and strains the outer boots stretching ability. Each vehicle with about 4 torn CV boot replacements, once every few years, which costs a good $300 to fix each time and takes hours for them to complete the time consuming task.

    I wondered why I never heard of Hondas or Toyotas ripping boots - so I had a look at one and compared to vw - it looked simply like they had more “accord”ian folds and they didn’t stretch out as much as on the BW so on VW I would relocate the inner clamp 1cm closer to the wheel hub so the folds wouldn’t fully stretch out - only changed boots once on the car - I did this twice on two Jettas and never did the boots again !

    • @jf4872
      @jf4872 6 років тому

      Remove the inner axle end boot clamp. It is not needed. I've not used them in decades. The boot fits very snug over the axle. This will allow for the boot to settle over time and not over stretch pleats while rotating. I'm going to be doing this job here today, the last time I did it was 1998. I used no clamps on the axle end of the boot. Using Rockford boots this time. The beveled washer was eliminated as well by VW via tech bulletin years ago.

    For all of you who own Audi A3 3.2 V6 DSG and possibly Golf R32 with the same engine it's very important that your inner passenger side boot is the propper size. If it's too big it will touch the engine's edge right at the top of the oil pan. Normaly the inner boots are slimer in diameter than the outer ones.

    FYI, it is called a CV joint because it is, unlike a universal joint, designed to have the input angular velocity equal to the output angular velocity all the time....hence, constant (angular) velocity. If you think about it hard enough, the regular U-joint only has 'constant velocity' when the angle of bend is zero (perfectly aligned input and output shafts). At any bend, the 'cross' wobbles around and generates sinusoidal components of angular velocity. In the old days, we didn't care. We drove Scouts and Blazers and Broncos....we couldn't feel subtle vibrations. But then cars got fancy and refined and no one wanted micro-wobbling in the steering as we evolved into front wheel drive.....

    Boss… I rode my cv axle with a broken boot for quite the time.. yesterday night I took off for a drive and as soon as I hit the main road by making a right turn, the car just jerked and shut off. I immediately placed it in park and turned the key to off. Now it turns on but cracks and rattles when I place it in drive or reverse, and it won’t drive at all. Is it my cv axle gone completely broke? Or can it be my transmission? No check engine lights. Engine turns on perfectly and revs great. But as soon as you place it in drive, it rattles, cracks etc and won’t drive just shake a lot. Shakes so much my side view mirror fell off…

    Jetta MK3 1994 1.8 petrol 90hp known as Vento in EU. First there was continuous slight treble and tremor for two years. Absolutely impossible to locate. I was lone soul to consider it as serious symptom because of my very sick sensitive back for such things. In peridoc inspection officer found CV boot broken(which was replaced). Ok one day after 2 years of continuous tremor I was driving straight ahead and started to hear ryhmic clips like wire touching(jumping) on some wheel rims. That was locateable to the front left. That sound was beginning of the end of that left drive shaft tire end. Last symptom was actual wobbling in steering and then self repairing once and finally all the bearing balls had shooted out from the structure. I was 500m from home so we managed tow it to neighbor. I'm quite lucky because my neighbor is a resourceful man. Would it be possible that that broken boot had gone broken because one of the bearings' ball would have shooted out and rest of them left kind of working? I have no real idea what is possible there considering forces. But at least lesson to learn might be:"If there is slight mystic unlocatable trembling plus visual damage in CV boot you better swap the drive shaft".

I would say yes.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  9 років тому

      V10PDTDI We don't see them on the DSG as much as the auto trans. But it is usually the left outer boot, and it's split on the inner clamp. Here in the south US we see them pretty regular.

  • @KingZoneOne
    @KingZoneOne 4 роки тому

    If the boots on the inner joints are torn, can you pull the axle, clean the triple roller, and just repack and reboot it? How do you know if your inner cv/triple roller is not reusable, and if it's worn/damaged? I'm getting slight vibration while accelerating from a stop which smooths out at about 15mph. My outer boots are good, inner boots are trashed, and I'd rather clean and reboot if I can instead of getting all new half-shafts.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  4 роки тому

      Odds are the inners are worn that’s causing the vibration. However it may be worth the work to try and reboot them before replacing the whole joint or axle

    wow, you're like a wizard!, it's exactly what happened on my mk5 but we didn't checked/knew(bought it used):
    we where getting clicking noises on turning but it was difficult to know where from, and we left it as is, sometime later i don't remember why we had it checked... CV boot was split in the accordeon, totally dry and the spline joint to the wheel hub was completely destroyed, it had grinded itself flat and the clicking was the axle bouncing around so we where driving a 1-wheel drive car for quit sometime(weird i though the diff was open in these cars).
    Had to change sheel hub, axle, cv, all the package, less than a year later it split in the accordeon again.....
    Isn't there an improved part that uses the had rubber for older cars?

      Probably tires out of balance - could be stiff (dry) cv joints - as explained in the video look for wet dark blueycarcoal or greenycharcoal grease at the boot behind the wheel hub AND at the boots where they are connected to the transmission. If you have vibration while braking it’s most likely the brake rotors are warped

    My b5.5 is a suspension nightmare. The guy before me put fully adjustable coil overs on the car. Which would be fine, except that it's changed the geometry in such a way that a hard turn will smash the cv boot against the lower aft control arm and rip it open. I have replaced three on the right side already and 2 on the left. Right now I'm facing replacement number 4 on the right. Currently I'm stripping down the entire front end on my wrecked 03 to put on my 01. Because f**k it, I'm not doing it anymore. I will send that goofy coil over suspension back to the great lake of fire from whence it came. It also eats front end tires like a banshee. Oh yeah, and wtf is with that retaining bolt for the upper control arm linkages, it will not back out on either side for both cars. Instead I'm dropping the whole assy and using a press to get the bolt out.... that's 4 entire assemblies! Autodoc can shove that bolt up his silly German arse, mr. Tappy tap tap with a hammer and it's out guy. I'm over this freaking car.... wait nah she's still good, I'll take her back, no one else understands her.

    Damnnnnn, 50k (avg) is A LOT. I don't get why dubs need maintenance so often on many of their parts.
