    If anybody thinks Snowden is a traitor, then you drank the government kool aid in gallons.

    • @alexanderthered5603
      @alexanderthered5603 7 років тому +23

      In all respect, he is a traitor. The question is what his betrayal was against and was it for a good cause? Finn from Episode 8 was a traitor, but I don't think anyone considers that a bad thing.

    • @alexanderthered5603
      @alexanderthered5603 7 років тому +3

      ***** Thanks for the correction. So he betrayed the Government for the sake of the people, right?

    • @aaronstanley7447
      @aaronstanley7447 7 років тому +22

      That begs the question, did he betray the government, or the people? Because there seems to be a "dysfunctional" division between the two, where one should not exist. His act opened the eyes of many unwitting Americans who were living under the impression that the government couldn't do such a thing legally.
      Is he a traitor in the myopic eyes of the government? Yes. Is he a traitor to the people? Certainly not!
      ( the comparison between the actions of a fictional character and a real person is rubbish. There are plenty of authentic examples you could've provided. )

      He absolutely does. If the government can't stand by its own laws, why should its citizens? Snowden did something patriotic and something that nobody else would've dared to. He defied the most powerful government on earth and did it for love of country.

    • @BlaqueCzar
      @BlaqueCzar 7 років тому

      +Unguided Reaper he gave that information to a foreign country then ran to russia of all places..where is the patriotism in being available to your countries enemy?

    • @MrMidnight972
      @MrMidnight972 7 років тому +15

      +BlaqueCzar So he should have stayed to get waterboarded and throwned into some black hole with no chance of getting a fair trial? People forget that the Government is the one who broke the law in the first place. and it didn't change anything in the end because it never stopped a terrorist...Let me ask you this, what's stopping your Government to turn on you one day? How can they be kept in check if you don't even know that this program exist? Fear is a powerful tool don't get blinded by it.

      The privacy invasion of citizens by the government for national security reason may mutate into complete surveillance of every person who has a dissident view or ideology to the people power, the democrats may start victimizing religious/conservative/2nd Amendment people or the republicans start oppressing equality/pro choice/non white people and the torchbearer of free world can transform into an oppressive regime like North Korea, It stop or the surveillance procedures should have really clear red lines.

      They have to have a judge signed warrant to listen in on phone calls and read emails of US citizens.

    I love these reviews so much, Jeremy always gets it right. This movie is made to make people aware of the issue and ask the important questions, keep the "debate" (awareness) going. This subject must not be forgotten, shady surveillance from the Five Eyes is still happening.
    The best movie about Snowden is definitely Laura Poitras' Citizenfour though. You can can watch the actual events unfold as they were happening. The suspense is incredibly real. Say what your want about Snowden, what he did was important and it took balls of steel to go through with it.

    Can't say for the movie, but I can say that I consider Edward Snowden to be an American hero. The surveillance program that the NSA ran/continues to run is a complete violation of the 4th Amendment's ban on warrantless searches and seizures, and I'm proud of him for having the courage to expose that. What he did isn't espionage or treason; it's whistleblowing, which is/should be protected under US law. In fact, we used to celebrate when that happened. I'd like to see Snowden given a full pardon and allowed to return to the country with no penalty. Yes, what he did is illegal, but it's pretty much a given that he's endured enough to earn time served.

      1. You're trying to justify the violation of American freedom that got us here today with a false sense of security.
      2. You simply can't know that, there is no line or restriction. Once you give them that power and right, you can never get it back. Just because you trust them today, does not mean that they will act in your benefit with that power later on down the road.
      3. Again, you're justifying the violation of American freedom for a false sense of security. Therefore, you deserve neither.

    Jahns my man! I've been a long time fan and always value what you have to say about movies since you're usually spot on! You're good people. However, the media sort of took this Snowden thing and ran with it back when it happened. They played on people's fears and lack of knowledge on the subject and ran with it for ratings. That being said, they were wrong and Snowden was wrong.
    I served 8 years in the active duty army and held a Top Secret clearance the whole time (still do) and worked directly with the NSA working missions, in a job very similar to Snowden's. Here is where he is wrong and frankly, was just an ostracized screw up who wanted attention and fame:
    1. The NSA is in charge of handling foreign adversaries, not domestic. I'm not saying there are no times when the NSA needs to look at someone who may hold a dual citizenship with their native country and the US, it does happen, but that isn't their focus. Its actually the FBI who handles US citizens as a rule though (so be mad at them if anyone! jk)
    2. There are many safeguards in place to keep NSA employees from rampant spying on those not involved with their specific mission. For one, we need specific authority granted to us to "spy" on US persons and it is not easily won. We also have things called auditors and secondary auditors who monitor our activity and would bust us if we, say, spyed on our ex-girlfriend. Auditors are people who we don't know personally and wouldn't feel an affinity to keep us safe, they do their jobs.
    3. Snowden not only broke laws with what he did, he actively damaged the United States Intelligence's Mission. Here's a true story about a target of mine. X was a dual US and foreign country citizen. X was the leading general of this foreign government's army, and was leading it in X's native, foreign country. It still took us a week every month to dig up enough reasons for the granting authority to let us continue to target X because of X's dual citizenship with the US. That was a week of down time where we couldn't follow X and see what was going on. Does it sound like that is a good idea? Does it sound like that authority was protecting US citizens? No, however after Snowden things have gotten SOOO much more difficult for us to do our job.
    4. Snowden also released names of US citizens who work to defend our country from foreign adversaries. He released these names to our enemies who want to see us killed or at least hindered by cyber attacks. Does that sound like a hero to you? He deserves his monocle of traitor and deserves no sympathy from anyone. He dug his own hole and now he has to live with it.
    I'll get off my soapbox now. Hopefully that can shed some insight. Oh and also, we can't just hack into webcams and start spying around the room...this movie was so exaggerated it isn't funny. It's like watching Enemy of the State and treating it as a documentary.

  • @spazzmaticus1542
    @spazzmaticus1542 7 років тому +1

    He's a hero in the eyes of those who nitpick what he leaked.
    He knew that foreign governments would not be interested in him unless he had something to offer.
    What he gave them was the private information of thousands of government employees and gave them secrets that helped no one but himself.
    If he truly loved his country he would have turned himself in. But the common trend among traitors is that they keep running away from responsibility.

    Snowden's actions did not make us any safer. It informed us of what's going on but there's a reason why insider information isn't released to every share holder and stock broker in the world. People with evil intentions can no longer be stopped nearly as easily now that they are aware of the wiretapping. Now let's say Snowden released this information due to some misguided sense of morality. I'd respect him for it even if it doesn't exactly benefit us. But realistically, after a bit of light research, it's pretty clear that a desire for attention was a very big part of his motivation. This along with his running away from the consequences of his actions makes Snowden appear as a pathetic coward more so than a "hero".

    • @SherryP
      @SherryP 7 років тому

      I kinda understood him what he'd done. The government was not fair to do something like that. He was angry and wanted people know what the government did. He thought he was a hero. But no he wasn't. He didn't even think about the effect in the future and god damn Russia. He did everything for nothing.
