My farming Drive Smart 61 LMT-S just got through with an almost 800 mile round trip and it functioned, flawlessly. It’s Traffic functions were disabled because I do not, yet, have the right power cable for it. I have ordered the 01-11838-00 power cord but it has not come in, yet. My TA-20 power cable worked with it, except for the traffic function.the live parking worked fine with my iPhone.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 it did not work. It gave me an error message - wrong power cord or something like that. The live parking did work. When I went to Walmart it told me that there was plenty of free parking.😺
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I looked up the power cable for the 61 LMT-S on the Garmin website and it called for the 01-11838-00 power cable. That’s what I have ordered. The TA-20 says I am using an incompatible power cable with it. I have never seen a GTM-60cable.
@@johnclarke6647 The GTM 60 is a High Definition Digital Traffic Receiver, with much more accuracy and refresh speed than the conventional built-in traffic receivers.
Excellent video, thanks so much for taking the time. I was hoping to see some info on the dash cam. Either my gps has failed or I have inadvertently shut off the alignment "live" video on startup and destination reach, portion. It does still record . There may be other vids covering this topic.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I was referring to the main camera which covers the frontal view. It used to show, upon startup a live view where you could align the camera for coverage. Also when you arrived at your destination, the last 100 yards would be displayed "live". It does still record, and play back the videos, but the initial "live" alignment and destination "arrival" vid no longer plays. I have to guess at the alignment now, as it only shows a black screen when aligning. I have learned more about this device since it failed, than all the time I have owned it, thanks to you.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 The label on the box indicates it is a Garmin Drive Assist 50. It was sold by Costco in Canada. I have been very happy with it, but am concerned it may be ending its life cycle. I just checked the purchase receipt and it is almost four years since purchase.
My 61 is an excellent gps. Very user friendly. I charged its battery up to full and it updated perfectly, wirelessly. Garmin express would not recognize it when I hung it on my Sync cable, so I updated it wireless. I might have to delete a gps in Garmin Express because it may only recognize three units.
Yes you can do it wirelessly. However if you are doing updates wirelessly you must make sure it is plugged in to a power source. Sometimes Map downloads could take hours and the battery might run out during the update.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I did and it did not. Full update took about 30 minutes. I have a fiber optic connection, here.I plugged in a TA-20 power cable to my 12 volt outlet, plugged into a surge protected buss bar. I plug all of my electrical stuff into surge protectors, laptops, tablets, routers, cable boxes, etc.
Great video. When you take a screen shot, how do you retrieve it? I can't find a folder anywhere. Seemed strange that at 16:38 you were surprised that there was no avoidance for toll roads & then at 17:27 you skipped over it right under Custom Avoidances.
I found out you have to connect to a computer to retrieve a screen shot. Kind of defeats the purpose if you are out somewhere without a computer. My old NUVI stored it internally.

Can i take out the battery in the garmin drive 40, and use just the 12v car charger? so that when i turn on/off the ignition and power, so does the garmin?
You could do that and the unit should work fine, but I don't recommend doing that. The reason is to have battery backup power in case the cigarette lighter cord gets lose or cuts off power. As you know when you hit a bump or if you accidentally move the cigarette lighter cable it could cut off the power; and that will cause your Garmin to shut down while you are in the middle of a rout.
I needed to know the difference between start new route and add active route. My Garmin took me way off when I pressed active route. What’s it for other than getting you lost !
Always start a new rout otherwise it will add multiple stops to the previously entered routs. For example if you want to drive to Las Vegas you enter the address for Vegas, then halfway to Vegas you decide to visit your friend who lives on your rout to Vegas. In this situation you can add your friends address to your active rout, the GPS will take you to his house first and once you get to his house it will continue to guide you to get to Vegas. However once you arrived to Vegas and you want to go to a restaurant you will need to start a new route.
I double dipped, today. I put a brand new 1100 mAh battery in my Nuvi 65 LMT. The battery in it was six years old and I had a brand new battery for it, so I put it in. Putting the video ribbon cable back on was a little tough, but the rest of it was a piece of cake. I have it charging up on the Mountaineer, right now for two hours.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I checked the battery date on the 61 and it was made 7/3/18, so batteries in gps units with Bluetooth and wireless do not last as long as those that don’t have these features. However, I do not know how the first owner operated the 61 and that could be the reason it only had a three year life on the battery.
@@johnclarke6647 Many people leave their GPS on their car windshields which gets really hot when the vehicle is parked under the sun. So that excessive heat which could reach up to 130 degrees F during summer, will extensively shorten the battery life.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 my 2006 Accord hybrid use to get so hot I had to drive with two fingers until the air conditioning cooled the steering wheel enough for me to put my fingers on it. I have, since, taken car color in a different criteria. I now go with lighter colors. My current CRV is a darker grey, called Steel, but it does not get as hot as that metallic red Accord. Nothing could get that hot. I usually crack my drivers window, slightly if left in the sun for any period of time. The Accord also had leather seats, another mistake I have not made, again.
@@johnclarke6647 I know the color of the car exterior makes a big difference in the car's interior temperature. The darker colors will absorb heat while the reflective colors like silver and white will deflect the infrared.
Very helpful 👍 Just purchased a 52 and want to update maps? I have an iPhone and an Amazon tablet but can’t figure out how to update? Can you only do updates if you have a computer or laptop? Thanks
No problem, so on this model unfortunately the only way to do an update is through a computer. Only on the newer models they have the WiFi option available for updates.
Hi! This is a great video, thanks for the details. My question is, I about the Garmin LM40, and the use of USB cable while driving. So my car's cigarette socket is occupied and the only way to charge the SatNav is to connect the USB cord to the available port. This seems to not only charge the SatNav but also turns of the GPS signal. Is there any setting I can use to correct this? I need the USB cable to charge the device while I use the navigation
Hello, im seriously considering purchasing the "DRIVE 51 LM CHILE" (im from Chile) because this version allows you to install any 3rd part maps but, and your video was really insightful but im not really sure about if its going to work for my needs (mostly for long trips, off road, or overland) but im more concerned about how does the device handles corrugations and bad conditions of the roads?, and also, how does the device handles the heat of being constantly in the windshield with direct sunlight (sorry for my broken english), other than that i see its an affordable good quality gps device wich in this version still supports 3rd part maps!
Hi, yes this is a good GPS but not specifically designed for harsh environments, for that you need a land GPS with Topographical maps. Although this can handle the Topographical third party maps, it cannot take a fall or excessive heat. So it is a good idea to remove the GPS from the Windshield if the car is being parked in the sun, but if you are driving it with the AC or Fan running it should be fine.
Thanks for your tutorial! Really helped but I mostly use my TomTom VIA so can u make an tutorial on that please? If that is possible but anyways Great Video! Stay Safe!
The instructions are well done, but my novi RM50 must be too old for the instructions to fit. Seems there is much missing to be able to follow. Most frustrating is to not be able to determine distance to a city without an actual valid address. Or to be able to plan a route via specific highways. I guess it's time to upgrade.
I have a question I updated my and it went firm the simple screen to a really complex screen with a lot of apps and stuff how do I get back to the same screen as your

I have a Garmin DriveAssist 51 LMT-S. Years ago, a Garmin specialist showed me how to enlarge the icons that show upcoming food, gas stations, hotels, etc. Now I don’t like them so large. How do I get those icons back to normal size? I can’t remember if he did on the Garmin GPS itself or in BaseCamp then uploaded to the GPS? Great video. Thanks
I followed your video for changing the battery on the garmin Dezl 570 And I let it charge on my laptop for a couple of hrs but when I plugged it in using my adapter in my truck the msg battery low came on and it shut off after about 15 mins. The car adapter lights up so why is it not charging and staying on once plugged in?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The laptop USB port does not have enough current to fully charge the battery, especially when it’s brand new with zero charge. So I recommend using an original Garmin car charger to fully charge it. If it still doesn’t charge then there must be something wrong with the battery or the battery plug
@@larrydavis9582 For the first time leave it overnight, like 6 to 8 hours, but for each additional time after 2 to 3 hours is fine. The Charging cable must support 2A if it is a 1A or 1.5A cable it may take longer.

I ended up buying a 61 LMT-s. I know you told me not to get it but I think it has everything the 65t has at a much lesser price. I will probably use my 65 LMT for every day use and my 61 for trips. Do I need a TA-20 power cable with it?
No because The TA-20 cable is for those Garmin GPS units that have a built-in traffic receiver, in your case the Garmin 61LMTS uses a smart phone for traffic data so you will need a standard cable
I need help. when I plug my garmin 50LM to pc, nothing happen on the pc. the garmin turn on to maps mode, not pc mode. I tried change the cable, use different port. I suspect the usb port is damaged but I cant test it to confirm, and also the seems fine visually. where can I get the parts of that usb port?
Hi, there could be one of these two issues. The system is not set to Mass Storage if so here is how you fix that ua-cam.com/video/4qeJchyKNl0/v-deo.html If that doesn't resolve the issue it could be either a bad USB Cable or a bad USB port on the back of the GPS if so here is how you fix that ua-cam.com/video/5abJoEpU-BM/v-deo.html
Thank you brother for an excellent tutorial. I have one question. When I search location by address, sometimes I get too many options and it becomes little confusing which one is right address to chose. I like to enter zip code first to narrow down the choices for address. But I did not see Zip Code entry option in your tutorial. How can zip code be enabled on Garmin Drive 50? Thanks.
You are very welcome, and about the Zip Code the Garmin Drive 50 does not give you the option to enter the Zip Code first, however the zip code is included in the multi address suggestions. The best and easiest way to navigate is enter the GPS coordinates for your destination address.
Hi , first of all I really enjoy your informative videos . Thank you . So my question is , when I turn on my garmin drive 52 the screen is 100% brightness . When I use the USB plug to power it on my motorcycle it automatically goes to about 70 % or so brightness . If I go into the brightness setting it will not let me change the setting on the slide . If I unplug the USB it will then let me change the setting . Is there any way to get around this situation ? Any help would be much appreciated . Thank you .
Hi, thanks for your kind words. About the problem that you are having with your Garmin GPS, I believe the cause is low current USB port in you Motorcycle. A Garmin Drive 52 Requires 5V 2.5A power, if your USB port can supply only 5V 1A or 1.5A power the GPS will preserve most of the power for important functionality circuits vs the screen brightness. So it will disable the screen brightness feature so that the main circuit board can get enough power to function.
Yes you can do that, as long as your GPS has Bluetooth and you link your phone with your Garmin GPS. Not all Garmin 50LM have Bluetooth, but most of them do.
Hi, Just wanted to point out that it's better to use coordinates as degree, decimal. It's very easy to use Google Maps to find the coordinates of a location and then enter those coordinates into the GPS to drive to the location. It's fast, it's easy, and you don't need the address of a location to drive there. Google may give coordinates in degree, minutes, decimal or degree, minutes, seconds but I've never tried to use that feature. Thanks for these tutorials I've found them very helpful.

Excellent video, thanks so much for taking the time. I was hoping to see some info on the dash cam. Either my gps has failed or I have inadvertently shut off the alignment "live" video on startup and destination reach, portion. It does still record . There may be other vids covering this topic.
You are very welcome, so when you say DashCam do you mean the Garmin Backup Camera?
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I was referring to the main camera which covers the frontal view. It used to show, upon startup a live view where you could align the camera for coverage. Also when you arrived at your destination, the last 100 yards would be displayed "live". It does still record, and play back the videos, but the initial "live" alignment and destination "arrival" vid no longer plays.

Thank you. Nice explanation / I am a truck driver and I am looking for the best Garmin map device for the truck
No problem, for trucks you need those models of Garmin GPS that starts with letter DEZL for example a good would be Garmin Dezl 760
I know the video cable is a little tricky, but I am glad you had another successful operation.

Hi, no problem
You need to buy this cable www.ebay.com/itm/333716621477
and watch this video ua-cam.com/video/EhBRmBvK4ng/v-deo.html

The instructions are well done, but my novi RM50 must be too old for the instructions to fit. Seems there is much missing to be able to follow.

The 80% Display brightness setting can drain the battery in a short period. A setting of 20% is better and is adequate.

I have the Drive 50 LM. Does it have a way to link it to my Cell Phone and Call someone by using it as a Hands Free Device?

Hi, Just wanted to point out that it's better to use coordinates as degree, decimal. It's very easy to use Google Maps to find the coordinates of a location and then enter those coordinates into the GPS to drive to the location. It's fast, it's easy, and you don't need the address of a location to drive there. Google may give coordinates in degree, minutes, decimal or degree, minutes, seconds but I've never tried to use that feature. Thanks for these tutorials I've found them very helpful.
Thanks for the info!
