How do flying fish fly? They extend their oversized pectoral fins, which catch air like wings. Specimen use made possible by University of Michigan Museum of Zoology #shorts
Hi, zoologist here. It's not just their pectoral fins, but their amazing caudal fin, too! See how it's lopsided? The lower lobe is longer so it can easily propel itself back into the air with powerful tail pumps.
You're right I've seen them starting to descend from their glide & they'll catch the crest of a wave with their tail & propel themselves once again into the air above the waves.
You're missing a few steps. You see that long part of its tail. They use it like a boat rudder on the surface. They use it to skim the surface of the water before they take off.
Also notice how the bottom half of their forked tail is longer than the top. Whenever they lose speed and near the surface of the water they submerge that part of their tail and use it to propel themselves back into the air to continue their glide.
The Skimwing or Tsurak from Avatar The Way Of Water has been based off of the Flying Fish and an Alligator Gar. You can see that the wings work exactly the same way
These flying fishes were swimming in schools and when I took my Reef shark to try and eat all of them, they flew away so I could only get a few of them. It was kinda annoying but I bought the Megalodon after a lot of grinding and ate all of them easily.(Hungry shark Evolution)
Actually, you’re right they spread their wings out catch the wind so they can glide but also they wait till when they can’t fly anymore they use their tail moving back-and-forth very very fast and then they pushd themself back up into the air and bam gliding.
Also, the unique tail shape where the lower part of the tail is longer, makes it so that when they lose momentum, they can use that tail like a motor and speed up then take off again. When theyre tired, they just stop. But by the time they stop, they wouldve travelled more than a hundred meters
I ever tell you about the time my buddy Jessica tried to fish out on the sea and caught what she thought was a salmon, but turns out to be a flying fish. That did not end well.
As long as water or any type of no harming liquid is on the gills of the fish or if the fish is wet it can keep respirating (that's breathing for common folk)
My dad practically grew up on a boat off the coast of California, and would make trips over to Catalina Island quite often when he was young. He has always said that he remembers seeing flying fish jumping out of the water all the time as they crossed, and said it felt like a parade. Now he is nearly 70, and he takes us- his kids- over every summer… I’ve only seen about 10 of them collectively in the years that I’ve been going. I’m not sure where they’re going, but it makes me sad to think about. :(
Don't get me wrong specimen preserved this way are really cool but I feel like we have to come up with a better technique for fish specifically. This fish alive is absolutely stunning but the preservatives take all that away and even though you can get an idea of the fishes size and bodily structure you lose a lot in my opinion when you no longer can tell its true appearance
The most wholesome channel about playing with corpses
There's no better way it might've been described lol
I wasn't thinking about it but now, looks like I'm gonna think about it every time he posts something.
That’s why i like the channel, because he’s playing with corpses and at the same time giving animal facts.
Wow fliying fidh can fly like an airplane
Im indonesian
Imagine they actually flew for a long period of time
“Is that bird? Is that a plane? NO it’s a Flying Fish!!”
Look up in the sky it's a bird it's a plane, OR a flying fish?
@@raku43887 bro you stolen the comment
They do in fact fly for a while
Taxonomically birds are already Flying fish
@trogo Birds are fish? Im confused.

You finally found a fish
Lol 😂
How do we know if it's a fish though, we can't see its skull?
@@imreallybadatnamingthingsyou’re right 🤔 do we think it’s a mammal?
@@Usertimeout I think we do.
@@UsertimeoutLooking at its pectoral fin, we can safely say it's a human.
Never thought a dead fish covered in formaldehyde would look so good with little clouds and air animations 😂

That’s one thing and also he can only fit so much into 60 seconds
Okay

Terraria players when rain:

I hate those flying bastards
Now we need walking goldfish in real life.
Those flying fish things

Who else remembers learning about these things when watching Octonauts
Heck yes!!!! I still love that show!

Flying fish is the equivalent of human space travel
Wouldn't that be the fish that can walk on land?
@@niclas8777 and pelicans would be ufos that capture them
Isn't more like the equivalent of a human going snorkeling or diving?

Funny, Octonouts taught me the same thing about 11 years ago.
someone else who remembers that show!
Yessss
I still watch it sometimes
All I can think about is a hurricane going over a school of flying fish and launching them deep into the mainland
The Skimwing or Tsurak from Avatar The Way Of Water has been based off of the Flying Fish and an Alligator Gar.
You can see that the wings work exactly the same way
Octonauts also explained this pretty well
"This is a flying fish-"
Me: *takes a chomp out of it*
The flying fish saw a bird and said “I wanna do that!” And proceeded to gain wing like fins.
The way he moves that dead fish and turns it into an airplane as if it hadn't suffered enough 😭😭😭💀
He finally got the fish he's been wanting!!!!
I remember learning this from Octonauts
Bro you just unlocked me a ton pf memories
mhm 👏👏
Fun fact flying fish can fly two whole basketball courts that’s 90 feet long and50 feet wide
Bro explained that one Octonauts episode in a scientific setting
The eyes of preserved animals are always so creepy
Flying fish is a misnomer because they don't fly- they glide. So, a more fitting name for the fish would be super long pectoral fin fish.
This was good. I already knew this from the Octonauts though. Good to hear it with actual terms though. Love your work!
That fish took life the easy way
"Finally! A 🐟F I S H🐟"
*_if you throw it, does it fly like a paper airplane?_*

This is simultaneously fascinating and incredibly morbid
I loved flying fish since i was a kid. I thought they lived in the south china sea and always wanted to go see them. I thought they were blue too😂😂😂
I mean they do live in the south china sea... As well as basically everywhere in the world but the Arctic and Antarctic... 😂

I think you’re right that they’re usually blue. This specimen just appears to be dulled I’m color from museum preservation.
You'll find them mostly in the Caribbean

flying fish are far more interesting than aliens
Ive actually seen about 20 of those guys flying together in person when I went fishing in the ocean lol
TLDR: They have wings.
Bro I’m feeling the Jacques Cousteau skully. Keep on my guy we love you.
I wonder if they'll evolve to become fully airborne creatures

Fish holds the world record for being the pet fish of the wright brothers
Have you done a tour of the place that houses every animal on the earth in a jar? If not I think me and a lot of other people would love to see that ❤

This channel is just what I needed to complete my list of favorite science subjects
I love the way he is so gentle with thread fish
“So what do you do for living?”
“ I play with the corpses of dead animals”
Imagine looking up in the sky, and suddenly a fish falls on your face..
The better question would be: how do flying fish fish ?🗿
Imagine they all just have gliding contests
Also, the unique tail shape where the lower part of the tail is longer, makes it so that when they lose momentum, they can use that tail like a motor and speed up then take off again. When theyre tired, they just stop. But by the time they stop, they wouldve travelled more than a hundred meters
Bro, when the fish died. It Didn’t know it would be getting picked by tweezers.💀
I ever tell you about the time my buddy Jessica tried to fish out on the sea and caught what she thought was a salmon, but turns out to be a flying fish. That did not end well.
A fisherman seeing the fish fly at him would go like “how do I catch that fish!!!”
I'm very curious as to how you manage to remember scientific names of so many creatures.
Hes likely studied for years on this subject.
When stuff is interesting to you is so much easier to learn them, i have that with plants.
Having scrolled for years this has been the most informative channel I have ever vmcome across 👏 🙌 😀
Where did you get all these animals? And were they dead when they were found? (By whoever collects them)
This one was collected in 1956
They flap those fins and really fly for about four hundred yards.I witnessed this in Palm Beach.
No they don’t flap their wings like birds they glide and can probably glide a very long meter!
They also use their tail fin to keep above water. Basically skimming the surface with it
"how do flying fish fly?"
With wings
-me 2023
He finally did it. It IS a fish!
Learn how fish fly❌play I am fish✅
My question: then how the fish can breathe?
As long as water or any type of no harming liquid is on the gills of the fish or if the fish is wet it can keep respirating (that's breathing for common folk)
nah bro terraria wasnt lying about flying fish 😭
I thought they just jumped, flapped their wings and went back to sea
Finally he knows what a fish look like now he just needs to remember that knowledge of fish looks
You forgot the part when they use their tail to build up momentum
It still owes mind that a species of fish really figured out how to glide in mf air of all things.
What a wonderful world 🌎
I remember enjoying them when I was on a 3w cruise at age 18. They used the bow wave to get airborne. It was like watching little silver arrows.
Their tail fins also help them propel farther
It amazing that their ancestor know how to evoled to avoid being kill under sea.
Yet, they just get themself another predator.
When you're on a cruise ship if you look over the railing you will see flying fish gliding away from the ships wake.
Imagine barely escaping a shark or a bigger fish just to get grabbed by a bird moments later

"Will you be bird or bird prey?"

"Its a bird!" "Its a plane!" "ITS A FUCKING FISH!"
There's one animal we can copy and design ourselves a flying pack
I saw so many of these fish flying around when I was on a cruise through the pacific!
Thank you soooo much for making it “fly” lol that’s all I could think about as soon as you picked it up with the tweezers lol 😂 10/10
