Insulating A Mercedes Sprinter Camper Van - Part 2

- After filling the tricker areas with recycled plastic bottle insulation we used double bubble foil insulation as a vapour barrier and carpeted the edges ready for panelling!

I’m a huge sponge with all these new tips. Thank you.
De nada Stevie, para cualquier otra cosa ya sabes,un saludo y espero que te sigan ayudando mis vídeos.
Eamon and Beck did that spray insulation. They got someone to do it and they fixed the wires in first. So they are technically stuck there. Not ideal if you want to start changing things around but as far as I could see there did not spray over anything which had a join, and also left plenty of cable hanging out at the ends. It’s their third build so I guess they know what they are doing by now 👍🏻❤️
Cheers Tina!
Get the wheel arches covered in the sound dampening material. Makes so much difference
what product would you reccomend for the wheel arches Chris?
We are friends, so I am not asking to rile you, why are people obsessed with cladding the interior of these vans with wood. Surely the swiss mountain lodge aesthetic is nice, but there has to be other finishes, that are lighter, cheaper and look modern. I used white plastic sheet that are used in the catering industry, wipe clean white, and the moulding covers up the joins really well. You can have a continuous span without any breaks in it. Cover up MDF in it, and the fact its vinyl, you can get it vinyl wrapped with colours and suchlike. Just asking why its not an option?
Hi Richard, yeah no problem buddy everyone has their preferences. I know the cladding look you mean but this van will have white flat walls and the ceiling cladding will be different from most. I think people like wood as it has a cosy natural feeling and the classic tongue and groove cladding is easy to use but yes there are so many options out there! We really want to use some Melamine on the walls in a van to make it super hard wearing and moisture resistant. Maybe my next van ;)
hi hugh, the van is starting to look sweet mate, cant wait to see the ceiling when its done sounds like its going to be something quite special .
cheers matey!
I know someone who did the spray insulation, it was a disaster as the guy sprayed around the door lock mechanism's. Had to pull a load of the stuff out, not an easy task. He should have blocked off the locks first, otherwise a good job, but pretty much permanent.
Yes, Mel's disasters are widely known .. lol
haha is the Mels Van World? Looks like he used the canned foam?
eaman and bec here on yt have used the spray foam insulation on a three van builds/conversions.
If you use a perpose made strip it wont compress as much as the double buble look up thermal resilient strip also has acustic properties.
Hi Hugh, check the sliding door handle for leaks , i think its a common thing on sprinters, Brettnbeck_valleyvan had it on theirs
Cheers Andy
Hi Hugh. Your UA-cam vids have been really helpful - so thank you! We’re at the stage where we’re doing our black ceiling backing this week before the wood strips goes up to reveal the black in the gaps. We’ve noticed you’ve done BOTH the stretch carpet and painted ply versions before. We’re really struggling to decide whether method to go with. Which worked best for you? Would love to know! Thanks, Mark & Iz
I've heard that plastic insulation burns, did you do a fire test ? Make sure insulation keeps clear of any power cables .
There are no cables running through it. We did actually see what happens when exposed to heat but it didn't seem to catch just melt in a similar way to candy floss melting
Hi Hugh, been following chanel for a while and genarally love your stuff (17 payslpis til i retire and can start my own project. However this van won't meet new DVLA guidelines as campervan as it doesn't have two windows on same side, excluding driver or passenger. hope customer aware for MOT puropses
From what i have seen even if it has the windows and all the other stuff required they will still only re classify it as a "van with windows" check out mels van world he has just attempted it and his is spot on
Hi Andrew it's not a problem at all. you don't legally need it to be classified as a motorhome to use it.
@@HughTube ah ok cool do MOT testers just class it as a van and therefore van insurance too.
I assume you've watched eamon & bec? They've sprayed foamed their new van and you can actually watch what they do.
Cheers Stephen I will check them out!
Just wondering how come you haven't run all your electrical wiring 1st?
There was no need for us to run the cable in the walls and it keeps the van more maintainable and modifiable for the future
Nope .... You got to do this vid again .... My mojo has been tampered with .... You forgot to start the vid by saying 'welcome back my DIY Nomads' ....... Gonna have to flick the light switches 20 times now
sorry hahaha
1. Would automotive carpet be sufficient by itself as both a vapour seal and insulation?
2. Or at least as a vapour seal?
3. Are there any exterior options to reduce radiant heat (like a specialist paint)?
I appreciate the reasons for each but it seems an awful lot of work to have a vapour seal, radiant heat reduction, insulation and a constructed air gap.
No carpet is very porous so you need something like plastic sheet. It would provide a very small amount of insulation but almost negligible. For the simplest insulation setup (although expensive) closed cell spray foam insulation is best. It sticks to the van wall and so acts as sound deadening plus doesn't need a vapour barrier so you can board right over the top of it
@@HughTube Thanks, Hugh. So, very approximately, how much would it cost to do a Sprinter with spray foam?
How much is it to get this done ??
Seems odd to carpet over the foil and not ply
There wont be ply on the roof under the ceiling strips
HughTube oh I see what yo us mean.
That will have a good effect, look forward to seeing the finished product
