The Wayne Gretzky episode was funny and endearing, because everyone involved leaned into the fact that he wasn’t a performer, especially Gretzky himself. In almost every sketch he good-naturedly played himself.
He even acknowledged all that in his monologue. And yeah they made it so that he didn’t have to do much heavy lifting. The sketches were funny. I like the one in the Kings locker room post game where celebrities were giving him hockey ideas unsolicited.
This is a little off topic but, why is it that I can never find the premier episode for 2001 when Rudy Guiliani police officers and firefights came on stage to commemorate 9/11 and afterwards, Lorne Michaels comes on stage to ask Rudy if "If it's ok to be funny again?" Why single out only the "bad" guest hosts for reading the cue cards? They ALL read the cue cards, every single cast member -- one of the dumbing down tendencies of SNL virtually throughout its existence. Check out most of the early sketch comedy shows -- Carol Burnett, Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, etc. -- all pros who learned their lines and delivered sketches in a more convincing, more professional way.
Not taking up for Trumpery-Rump (I don't particularly like him, but I don't hate him either) he hosted twice, and his 2004 appearance was really funny.
I'm not sure if on earlier videos whether I made this comment because this channel has done this topic in earlier uploads, but IMO Charles Grodin should have been Number One for this list (at least as sketch player here, aside from monologuing). Anyone who brings sketches to a screeching halt and has the other performers break character to complain in real time about him screwing up the skit cannot be worse (and it's not like a meta or fourth wall break thing on purpose with Grodin, and trying to make it into some kind of Andy Kaufman thing is a bad excuse also I think). Even Steven Seagal, Donald Trump, Al Sharpton had all kind of pulled off their sketches without having it crash and burn like Grodin did.
I realize one has to be of a certain age to know this but SNL had no business having Andrew Dice Clay host. Nora Dunn and Sinead O'Connor were right and Lorne Michaels is an ass for not supporting basic decency. Misogyny was never funny.

Lorne Michaels should have been taken to the Hague for Crimes against Humanity years ago for SNL
