5 Things You Didn't Know About the Floyd Rose Tremolo

- UPDATE: Subsequent to the making of this video, Floyd Rose has changed the radius of their R3 and L3 nuts to 10". It is no longer 12", as indicated in the video. So make that..... FOUR Things You Didn't Know About the Floyd Rose Tremolo. :)
Tell your bosses that this is the best thing they can possibly do to market their products, and it puts a "face" or personal spin on Warmoth as a brand. Love it!
Another fun floyd trick... if you break a string at the saddle you can always take a wrap or two off the tuning post and reinsert the string. Will usually get you to the end of the set when you can address any issues.
I would break a string onstage and be back in tune in under 2 min flat! Floyds are the shit!
Yep! Wrapping extra string around the machine heads not only helps keep the high strings from slipping, but also comes in handy in that situation.
YOU are the "Man".
I've been doing the Eddie technique of stringing the ball end through the tuning peg for 20 years. That way you get the max extra string length to work with if you need to unwind and relock.
How about a video about all the different strat trem options like 2-point, vintage, wilkinson recessed etc.
Top notch players use Wilkinson Govan
I never understood the "it's hard to change strings on a Floyd Rose" line. It's actually super easy and the time you spend cutting off a ball end and loosening and then tightening the locking nut is worth it because no matter how good your non-double locking trem system is at staying in tune the Floyd Rose stays in tune better.
hahah,, that's not always true. well at least with the special/licensed ones
it’s the tuning after the string change that’s harder than a typical bridge, the actual string clamping is easy
You dont need to cut ball ends if you feed the string the other way around from the top.yet i never hear annyone complain they have to cut strings by the tuner at the headstock.i never understood those complaints.and i didnt even cut them at the headstock i just bended them and broke them off
I never had a problem changing strings on a floyd. On a FULL floating trem just change one string at a time and tune it before going to the next string.😉
I have a 6 and 7 string with Floyds and I'd much rather do a string change on them than my BC Rich with the wraparound tailpiece. That thing is an aggravating pain in the ass.

Very informative. Keep’em coming !
Thanks for the informative videos, keep them coming.
love these videos! Keep them coming!
Brian Tsao was
This is an old video, but I found it extremely informative! He just explained a tuning issue I’ve had for years! And I have my own repair shop! Now I have work to do. Thx
Aaron, love these videos! Keep on pickin!
How have I not found this channel before. Its so awesome thanks Warmoth.
Always Great Info! Thanks!!
Bosses: these vids are great! I've been subscribed for a while now. Always great info!!
Aaron, making these videos was absolutely vital as people don't have to guess anymore what all the different exotic wood species will sound like. Try to make videos of as many wood combinations as possible. Many thanks
Aaron. I get so much from your videos. Thank you for doing such a great job.
Aaron, thanks for making this video. Just bought a Floyd Pro 1000 because I don't want the tuners sticking up in the air and also hopefully avoid neck shims. So I had to look this up again to double check on the arm situation, but found that I need the R4 instead of the R3. Thanks again.
Love the videos. Been subscribed for awhile and I love when Aaron does the informational stuff like this and the stainless steel frets vs nickle frets.
Thanks for the video rusty Cooley!
I might have his hair, but I DON'T have his biceps!
This is the Boss of your bosses, you are approved and doing great, keep it up...
I've been gathering part for three months now, and tomorrow I finally get to put my first Warmoth guitar together! I will be using a Floyd Rose, but it's the "Rail" model. Still have plans for at least two more Warmoth builds. Best in the business as far as I'm concerned.
This man needs to do as many of these helpful PSA type videos as he can to help spread his knowledge.
Extraordinary attention to detail. Superior knowledge of subject matter. Warmoth is fortunate to have a fellow like aaron. A valuable asset to the company.
Great videos.. great information.. makes me want to spend money..
I was especially stoked to know that you make baritone necks..
Currently formulating a build guitar in a baritone format for my spaghetti westerns.. Talk with you soon.
These are the best videos. The "bosses" HOPEFULLY understand this. Make more.
I have always loved Floyds! Great video
Very interesting and informative. Than you, and keep posting
Keep making these.
Love these videos.
I subscribed because Aaron videos rock!
Awesome video. Thanks
I want more videos like this one! Very useful!
Love the videos!
I sure am glad I watched this before ordering anything from you, thx!
Bosses, thank you for letting Aaron make this video. More please.
I LOVE FLOYD ROSE!!!!
I didn't know about the shim changing the radius.
Mounting the locking nut from the bottom is best IMO you can also adjust the nut to make sure it is centered. Love the videos Aaron tell your bosses to keep em coming. I love Warmoth body's and necks you can build a custom USA guitar for a 1/4 of the price or less than you can buy one. Keep up the great work!!!!
Great video thanks!
Great info! Thanks!
very good information. I am actually researching at the moment on how to change a licensed Floyd Rose bridge on my Jackson Kelly Start to a Black Floyd Rose bridge...including the rest of the hardware
Wow! I always wondered about the 'R2' 'R3' thing. PLUS, I never knew you could change the radius by removing the shim! Thank you!
Love the Floyd. great show and info
Didn’t know about the radius!! Thanks
Great content, thanks!
I agree with you on ease of string changes. I've had a Floyd on at least one of my guitars now sense about 1984 or so. The very first ones did not have fine adjustments for tuning. You really got schooled on Floyd back then, or at least I did. I got that swapped out when I moved back to the states from Germany. Wish I held on to the original though. Heard those might be worth a buck or two...I guess I knew all the things you spoke of in the video though, they also offer shims for the nut, or various nuts rather. If the nut needs adjustments on a set up. Lots of videos with how to .....your Floyd Rose, out there too...
Thank you for exercising my mind in a different direction than it has been lately. Much needed distraction from the madness of the world we inhabit these days...love and light to all...
🎸😷🎸🇺🇸☮
Please and thank you.
I’m buying a 80s Ibanez Roadstar RS 450 with an Edge trem tomorrow. You made me feel better about it. I will learn how to love a Floyd even if it kills me!
Bosses, these vids are great, so we need more :)
Loving the videos. Looking to make own guitar soon!
Thanks, Aaron, this video saved me $200!
“Let the bosses know” I very much enjoyed the videos I learned a lot. And can’t wait to get my Warmoth Guitar 🎸 👍🏼
Nice job!
Definitely more videos like this...
I like this a lot...did not know many stuff
To the decision makers at warmoth, this guy presents well and you guys have an awesome angle within the industry. Please continue to upload vids to you tube.
"This guy" thanks you! :)
Keep on Pickin. Cheers!
Cool, man!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺 🤘
Bonus tip…I never remove the ball end. I thread that through the tuner, then trim the excess even with the fine tuners.
thx for the info man
Excellent!
IF your Bosses dont understand how much it means to have a friendly face, of a spokesperson who connects Directly with the target audience, well, they will learn the hard way. You've always been such a humble and honest host for Warmoth, I wouldnt be as interested if not for you, Aaron.
I got my first Floyd Rose in early '84. I prefer stringing them "backwards"; ball end at the tuners, then clip off excess at the bridge. It makes it easier to fix a broken string during a gig.
#6. With the Floyd you can release the strings at the bridge and swap a pickup and then reattach the strings quickly. Or remove a pickguard.
Hey bosses Aaron does a great job!
Hey Aaron ! New sub here from Quebec !
Thanks Aaron! There is also a Floyd Rose R1 nut with a 1 9/16" nut width and narrower string spacing than the R2. This is what I use on my 1 5/8" nut width Warmoth necks (after I narrow them further by sanding away 1/32" from each side). I wish Warmoth offered a nut with narrower than 1 5/8"!
Yes. They also make something like an "R10" I think, which has a 15" radius. Warmoth just stocks the 4 widths that sell the best.
Hey Boss, let this guy do more guitar educational videos!!! He good! Im following
Hey bosses we want to see more videos. Aaron liked how you said Floyd Rose was way old like from the 80's. To everyone under 30 the 1980's isn't that old!!! But as always we do enjoy the videos so keep producing them.
Now I'm really confused, good video.
Warmoth in the South Hill hood! Thanks, BTW for pointing me to Joe Riggio.
Love it!
I wish it was an option to have a top mount floyd when doing a build!
that'd be sick!!
If you string a Floyd 1 string at a time, thick to thin, and tune it as you go, there will be no issues with the bridge moving up up down. Perfect for first time owners.
nice video! thanks for sharing. BTW do you know the difference about a flush-mount and a recessed floyd?
Less stresses on the screws and the woods if mounted on the back of the guitar. Also, I like the look of it too.
I bought my Floyd in 1987 and there was no shim under the saddles. But the box also had the Kramer logo on it, so a different era.
Hey Aaron, thanks for the video, actually that would be great if you make an official Warmoth video, about the argument, how you change strings easily on a floyd rose
Can Vaio what is the argument? There is only one correct way to install strings on a Floyd and probably the easiest to string once you clip the ball
More videos!!!! Can u make videos showing off customers custom parts?
Good info. Could you show us where to drill holes for stud mounts?
I've watched a lot of your videos. I have one suggestion, when you explain something, please zoom the camera to the object. To do so people will interested and understand about the details even more. Thumbs up 👍👍👍
Dear Warmoth, Aaron kicks ass. We could use more of him in these videos.
I like the info you just gave. Never liked a floyd rose, but I do see the usefulness of them. To be fair, I only like the bigsby style.
R3 nut was designed for Jackson. 12” radius for their 12” to 16” compound radius fingerboard. Narrower string spacing because of the rolled fingerboard edges. Thanks Jackson and Floyd Rose!!!
yeahhhh more videos
More videos please.
.......LOVE all of your videos warmoth keep them coming this is the best person ever on screen!
.... getting the new floyd rose 8 string model it is an original design based from the original it is the 1000 series with forged hardened base plate like the original. Please allow me warmoth to design you an 8 string guitar build i have phenominal designs that are straight forward and simple. Have all blueprints.
Wow! This guy is so committed to the company that I thought he was the boss himself.
OMG! The nut string spacing! I have a LTD Kirk Hammett sig guitar and it drives me crazy with the amount of room at the sides of the neck. All I have to do is change the nut? This is fantastic news. It's the only thing that bugs me about the guitar.
Hi Aaron, great info on the Floyd Rose's. Also those 2 guitar over your right shoulder, any plans on Warmoth making those for the public? Both are amazing shapes and could see a lot of potential with them both.
The one furthest left if a VIP body, which you can get now. The one closer to me is a prototype we're working on. Not sure when/if it will make it to market.
@@warmoth Thank you, hopefully that body will make it to the market. I will check out the VIP as well. "Keep on picking"!!
Hey Aaron when you mention the part about the Floyd locking nuts you state that there are two different R3 nuts, one for 1 11/16” and another for 1 5/8” string spacing. Isn’t that for the R4 nut? Just curious. Thanks!!
Thanks for pointing out that looking nut should be mounted from the back. 👍
where can you get the upgraded arm you mentioned that has the nylon insert that stops the slop/play in the arm? great video too.
You have to order them directly from Floyd Rose. When you order yours, leave them a not telling them they need to make the standard. :)
subscribe button moved, you were now right the first time :)
Totally agree.I started with floyd rose guitars. I find them easier to restring also. No flipping the guitars over.
Have you seen this video: ua-cam.com/video/Dqvxfjl2UlA/v-deo.html
Hey Aaron, can you do a video on the Floyd Rose 1000 vs Original Germany? They claim the 1000 is just as good, but I find that hard to believe. All the 1000’s I had, had sharp ridgid fine tuners for example.
We only carry the original German version, so I won't be able to do a video on that unfortunately.
This hippie rocker is so unexpectedly knowledgeable. Way to represent.
The R3 is 1 11/16th "for binding" as on Jackson, etc. guitars that have fingerboard binding.
I had the shim in mine even though the neck is like a 16 inch radius, much better now I've taken it out!
Also I only recently discovered that the bridge saddles are all different heights based on the number on the bottom, I took mine apart one time when I wasn't in a suitable condition and put them all back in a wonky order lol
And yes, those screws can come loose as they did on one of mine but hey, easy fix at least
Great video. I have a schaller floyd rose pro (smaller string spacing .400) with the R2 nut. Are there any after market nuts with that string spacing but flatter radius. I want to modify my existing fret board radius to a 14 or 16.
Nice, thanks from Italy!
I can see the non-fine tuner routed guitar back there!! Any chance that will be an option soon?
If my neck is a straight 12" radius and 1 5/8" width, my only option is the R2 correct? Thanks Warmoth, I love Floyd Rose trems!!
I'd love to know your opinion on the floyd rose special, I'm new to the trem world and just bought this jackson with a floyd rose special but everything I hear about it is negative.
