Very unusual fridge! I really like the unusual way they had the door storage shelving done. I have a feeling this was a way to have door storage while not running afoul of Crosley's "Shelvador" patent! The compressor does look a lot like the Frigidaire Meter-Miser compressor. There are some differences, but it resembles it a lot. Wonder if Philco had their own design there, or if it was bought from another supplier?Unfortunately I am on a jobsite with a lot of ambient noise, and my laptop speakers are bad. Will listen to this again once I get in a position to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to make this and show the very unusual nature of this fridge!

Thanks for the mention! I sincerely appreciate this. Just got back on land where I have speakers and can listen to your video.
Back in this day, there was fierce competition in the fridge sales market. They all do basically the same thing, so the one who has the best "bells and whistles" and markets them most effectively, on their refrigerator, is the one who sells. They were all vying for the buyers who were looking to have the "best" new designs. The inner storage door and cutely named drawers in the cabinet were a part of this as well.
That's wild about the lower drawer blowing out on the road! At least he saw it happen and was able to retrieve it. Having a mangled one to start with beats having nothing at all!
Listening to the compressor; I can tell it's not a Meter-Miser design. That sounds like a reciprocating compressor; similar to a GE Scotch Yoke machine.
For You Tube, it will allow 30 plus minute videos; unless you have broken their rules and got "strikes" on your account.
I know how you feel about allowing the two GE's to go to a recycling program. Thanks for your very worthwhile opinion about how the old fridges are as good as what we have now. I agree completely. The power usage is often less with the vintage ones, because they don't have automatic defrost heaters, heated door gaskets, and high horsepower compressors for high speed ice making like the new ones do.
Working on these fridges as a hobby, sometimes I run 4 or 5 fridges at a time for test running. If they were energy hogs, I would have a very high electric bill on those months. Even with more than one running, I can't see any appreciable difference in energy cost when I am running them.

These old appliances were truly made to last. People will claim these old appliances use a lot of energy, but that is not so true anymore since the newer ones seem to not do as well of a job as these older appliances, and modern washers and dishwashers are a prime example of modern appliances that don't do as good of a job as the older ones do. I actually go a Maytag DE306 halo of heat dryer a couple of weeks ago for $50, and it does a fantastic job at drying clothes, and it only has a 4800 watt heater compared to the 5600 to 6000 watts most other electric dryers use.

I agree, there's more than just energy efficiency. There's doing a good job and lasting a long time too! Do I recognize your "new" Maytag from automaticwasher.org? ;)

realvanman1 the thread I created on automaticwasher.org is called Maytag DE306 Halo Of Heat Dryer. I got that dryer for $50 a couple of weeks ago. It's not a top of the line model, but it's still a Maytag halo of heat dryer. Your Maytag DE806 halo of heat dryer is top of the line model since it has the electronic dry control on it. Mine just has a timer on it, and mine is just a bottom of the line Maytag halo of heat dryer since it doesn't have all the features as the top of the line models do.

Hopefully I am able to find a matching washer to the Maytag HOH dryer I just acquired not to long ago. I did see a Maytag washer with a suds return on market place today, and I was literally about to message the seller about it, and it was marked sold. I find it kind of strange that they said they were only available Wednesday August 22nd after 3:00 pm, but they marked it as sold on a Monday which is kinda strange.

Ahh, a suds return washer would be pretty cool to have! Sellers seem to be weird sometimes... Keep looking! I sure wish the matching washer had been present when I picked up the DE806, but it was long gone...

realvanman1 they might relist it for sale, but I have my doubts. There seem to be quite a few Maytags in SoCal, and out of all the vintage machines I saw on Craigslist, most of them seem to be Maytag. I've seen a couple of Maytag gas halo of heat dryers for sale, but from what I heard they are a lot slower than the electric versions, and the were one of the last gas dryers to use a standing pilot to turn on the burner.

Where did the old appliance tester come from?

I lucked upon it in a local antique shop. I have since bought another off eBay, that was in better physical condition, but ended up being burned out. So I combined the two to make one really nice one, saving the other for possible eventual repair. If you get one, do not use the low watt setting (500) with high voltage (240). The manual states this explicitly, but there is no such indication on the meter itself. I’m guessing that is what happened to the bad one I bought.
