    ~ Point Wolfe to Big Salmon River ~
    If you are a hiker from the maritimes or looking for hikes in the maritimes, chances are that you’re familiar with the Fundy Footpath along the Bay of Fundy. There are many hikes along the Fundy Parkway short and long with world class campsites available to all hikers enjoying the trails.
    The Fundy Footpath is a challenging, approximately 63km thru hike which can be hiked in either direction starting from Point Wolfe or Big Salmon River.
    The trail has ten large, steep hills which climb and descend from 0m elevation up to the highest point being 230m elevation. Total elevation gain/descent is 3158m which is equivalent to hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim over 63km instead of 82km which is quite wild if you think about it!
    There is only one tidal crossing Located at Goose Creek. Passable at high tide, but not recommended. At high tide you will see water anywhere from waist to chest deep. Two hours before or after high tide is recommended and low tide you will only see water at about ankle deep. The crossing will be quite muddy and water shoes or barefoot is ideal when crossing.
    Camping along the FFP has never proven difficult, but will be busiest around the first week of the season and Canada Day weekend. There are countless world class areas along the trail to set up a tent or hammock. Nearly every cove has a camping area and firepit. My personal favoutite campsites are Little Salmon River and Seely Beach, although they’re all relatively great.
    The terrain throughout this hike is mainly a soft carpet of pine needles and mossy areas with plenty of tree roots to navigate. Most of the coves are rock beaches which are easy to navigate and offer the perfect place to enjoy a break. The trail is also very well marked with white blazes which make it hard to find yourself off trail. I do recommend getting the trail guidebook though which can be purchased at the hikingnb web page.
    I cannot recommend this trail enough as it is one of New Brunswick’s true gems and holds a place dear to me as it was my first thru hike and it is a trail that I hike annually. It really is one of my favourite trails that the province has to offer!
    I hope that this video serves as a trail guide and provides motivation for others to get out and explore the beautiful Fundy Footpath or any hikes in our beautiful Maritimes!
    Happy Hiking 🥾

    Nice. No vlogging, no stats, no opinions. Just the sounds of nature and some tastefully chosen music. I feel like I was right there with you. You basically hiked the trail twice with all the tripod setups!😂 Just found your channel and I’m looking forward to watching your other hikes. Subscribed!

      Glad you enjoy the vibe! I try to keep the videos peaceful and stuff the description full of the details for those who are interested.
      By the end of a hike I usually add around 2km or so for a 60km hike. All part of the experience for this guy 😂

    Great video, I love the drone shots. The FFP is a funny trail, every year I'm so beat up when I finish I swear it's the last time, but by a few weeks later I know I'm just going to end up doing it the following year again lol.

      That’s the pure beauty of type 2 fun! While hiking you suffer and subconsciously your body and mind are loving it and holding onto the beauty of the trail… only to share that beauty and enjoyment once you’ve completed the mission.
      I’ll be back every year because that type 2 fun is so addictive 😂

      Thanks. Totally impressed. 👍 Had no idea that the iPhone could take such incredible shots and audio. I take that you're flying the drone on the sly since all parks (national, provincial, municipal) in Canada do not permit drones. 😥 I just got a drone but am disappointed that I have to seek out crown land to use it.

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  Місяць тому +1

      @kurio999 Phone cameras have come really far and the only thing that I would like is a good telephoto, but it seems that apples working on that, so any year now!
      I often fly just outside of the parks for my shots when I’m somewhere that does not allow it, but in NB especially and with my work it makes it quite easy to gain permission to fly if I really needed to.

    I’m planning a hike in sept with a buddy and am currently in the planning process. Do you have a list of equipment you’ve used in this hike?

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  10 місяців тому +2

      Sorry for taking a while to get back to you. Just got back from hiking with my son in Iceland!
      I don’t have an exact list, but there are so many levels and variations to what you could use. I actually carried 2 tents on this trip to test out my new 1p and a 2p for when my girlfriend met up at the end.
      Your main focus would be your sleep system.. sleep pad, sleeping bag, pillow or stuff sack full of clothing, and of course a tent or hammock.
      You’ll need food. Some people opt for eating bars the whole time, some people bring steak for the first night, the majority stick to dehydrated meals or ramen for dinner, bars for lunch, and oatmeal for breakfast. For cooking you can use a jetboil, or a toaks pot with a msr or brs stove. Oh and don’t forget a water filter! Sawyer squeeze, platypus QuickDraw or Kathadin befree are all great options.
      You’ll want a change of clothes, a few pair of hiking socks, hiking shoes, and some rain gear.
      Everything else is up to the hiker really. A little first aid kit is great, extra cordage, a Swiss Army knife can prove very useful at times, trekking poles, camp shoes/sandals, a camp chair.. the options are endless and vary greatly, but I believe this touches the main and most important items.
      I hope this reaches you before your hike and hope you enjoy it. The Fundy Footpath is a fantastic hike!

    Hi great video! Me and friends are doing the FFP for 4 days 1 month from now! Any tips you can provide? What tent are you using?

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  2 місяці тому

      You’ll have a great time! The trail is in great condition this year. I just ran it from Alma to the gate towards Saint Martin’s last weekend. Ended up being 87km over 20hr 55mins and the only issue on trail was around the 5km mark there was a very large eroded section. I heard that they were headed out to create new trail around this area very soon though.
      The tent is a Durston Xmid. Can’t recommend it enough!
      The only real tip I can provide is to work on your elevation training… hills are steep and there’s about 10 of them going up about 200-240m each. You’ll be covering almost 4000m of elevation on this hike, so hit the hills or stair climber and get those legs ready for one of New Brunswick’s best hikes!

    At what time of year did you hike it (in this video)? Have you ever hiked it in late spring? I'm curious to know if the black flies and mosquitos are less voracious along the trail than further inland.

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  Рік тому +1

      The video was from June 24th, 2022. I don’t believe I have hiked the Footpath any sooner though unfortunately.. I know I’m reading the arrival of the black flies here in Fredericton… anyday now!
      I’m quite sure the bug situation on the coast isn’t much better than inland.

    I've just watched your video. It's very well done. I have a question, I'm a 63 year old woman who's moderately fit, I work out 3-4 times a week and am healthy. Is this a hike that I could do? Also, I'm not great with heights but only if I have to walk on cliffs where there's a ledge where it's very high. Climbing up high hills doesn't bother me. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  7 місяців тому +1

      I have seen many people hiking the trail. There are about 10 steep climbs and descents and it is very physically demanding. Even for those who are in fantastic shape. In fact one climb is called heart attack hill. Most hills are of equal severity though. The good thing about this trail is that there are many camping areas throughout and if you extend the hike over many day perhaps could be the most enjoyable experience. In the event that an injury occurs or you cannot physically continue, there are not many easily accessed exit points on the FNP half of the trail. Anything is possible and I hope you can get out to experience this amazing trail. I am sorry that I cannot provide much information in terms of if you specifically can complete the trail or not as there are so many factors that go into a response. I hope this provides some insight for you to consider and I would love to hear back on how you make out on the FFP if you do take on the journey!

    • @Mandyanne31
      @Mandyanne31 5 місяців тому +1

      How much hiking experience do you have? The hills and descents are quite long and steep, I’m not in my 60’s but I did it with a friend who’s in her 50’s a few years ago with no issues. If you don’t have much hiking experience I’d probably start with cape chignecto in Nova Scotia. It’s like a watered down version of the footpath. Lots of ascents and descents, not as many and they aren’t as long and steep but it’s still a challenging hike. It’ll give you a good idea whether or not you want to tackle the footpath. I did Chignecto twice before I did the footpath. It’s a beautiful hike. People of all ages have done both trails, if you plan well, allow for enough time and you have good strong legs you’ll likely be absolutely fine.

    • @HikingThru
      @HikingThru  Рік тому +1

      Great question! That is one of the more difficult parts about the hike. There are several options for the FFP. You could yo-yo the trail, if your hiking with others you can drop a car off at the end and loop another car to the beginning to start your hike, or you could do as I did and arrange a drive at the end of the hike. My girlfriend hiked in to Seely Beach to camp out with me on the last night.
      I hope this helps!
