this song is about layers of perceptions.
Sartre gives a famous example of someone looking through a keyhole, to illustrate his concept of "The Look", in Being and Nothingness.
" Let us imagine that moved by jealousy, curiosity, or vice I have just glued my ear to the door and looked through a keyhole. I am alone and on the level of a non-thetic self-consciousness. This means first of all that there is no self to inhabit my consciousness, nothing therefore to which I can refer my acts in order to qualify them. They are in no way known; I am my acts and hence they carry in themselves their whole justification. I am a pure consciousness of things, and things, caught up in the circuit of my selfness, offer to me their potentialities as the proof of my non-thetic consciousness (of) my own possibilities. This means that behind that door a spectacle is presented as "to be seen," a conversation as "to be heard."

But all of a sudden I hear footsteps in the hall. Someone is looking at me. What does this mean? It means that I am suddenly affected in my being and that essential modifications appear in my structure - modifications which I can apprehend and fix conceptually by means of the reflective cogito.

Working and writing parallel to Sartre (as well as inspiring, editing, and likely developing his ideas) was Simone de Beauvoir. The idea of The Look features heavily in her great feminist work, The Second Sex.

I can't listen to this band anymore without crying. I've been listening to Night Tapes for over 6 months since I first found Selene, and I somehow missed the meaning behind the lyrics. I've listened to this song quite a few times, and maybe it's just because the music is such a vibe, but it wasn't until about a week ago that the lyrics really hit me. I realized most of the songs aren't about anyone else. To Be Free perfectly articulates the struggle I've dealt with my whole life. I can't turn off my thoughts. I've got hundreds of tabs in my head that won't close, and I feel like I can't do anything because of it. I've made countless mistakes that I just had to sit back and watch myself make. I want to be in control. Night Tapes used to be in my top 5 bands. That's no longer the case because they just secured the number 1 spot for me. I hope they become so much bigger and never lose sight of their vision. Thank you so much for doing what I wish I could do.
