Welcome aboard an EA-18G Growler catapult shot off the TR (CVN-71) somewhere in the Arabian Gulf. This was a MAX power Case I launch off catapult 2.
You can see that catapult 1 (the catapult immediately to my right) was undergoing maintenance, so the handler had jets stacked on it. Space is a premium on the flight deck.
After I launch, you see me execute a clearing turn to the right, then back to the left. This "clearing turn" is a visual signal to other aircraft in the pattern of my intention to depart the pattern. No comms required.
As you can see, I need to find a better place to put my charts.

"Look Mom, no hands. Double signature move!" 😂
Takeoff and land, no hands.
Step 3 - Communicate.
Deny it ever happened, tell no one.
Love it 😂❤
Even though it is right there on the PLAT camera for the whole ship to see.
@@michaeljohnson4258 STEADFASTLY deny it ever happened. Of course.
Nah, that's Exonerate...! Which you must do because it was not your fault..!
F18 love it!!
It wasn't my fault, that I turned 69 but, if there is a spare seat for a three thousand hour pilot then - "give me a call, I'll fly with ya!"🇺🇸/🇬🇧
Step 3 really had me laughing: deny it ever happened, tell no one😂. Your humor makes these voiceovers so special 😉. And of course your flying skills-right hand/left hand/no hand👏(who needs hands except for the signature moves 😁). Thanks Pail, we really appreciate your good work👍!
Those 3 steps -- aviate, navigate and communicate -- are fundamental. I learned to fly light airplanes nearly 50 years ago and that was stressed by the FAA and every instructor I met. You didn't have to be a steely-eyed, square-jawed hero pilot to survive an emergency; you just needed to understand that best chance of survival -- and a surprisingly good one -- was to keep control of the airplane.
Truth.
Amazing! One of the best voiceovers yet! Not only a master of your craft but perhaps the best "salesman" of naval aviation! Fly navy!
He's likely a great instructor..that's a coveted secondary assignment, I would think ..everybody wants to keep flying an airplane instead of a desk
I honestly don't know why our airpower didn't make films like this back then. Other than the documentary type films.
This is so beneficial in getting our youth involved back into air power. The more that try out, the greater the turnout.
Thanks "Pail". I truly appreciate what you're doing.
Because we didn't have GoPros, mostly. I remember when NASCAR started allowing networks to put TV cameras in the cars in 1979, and the special video camera developed for it took up the entire passenger side of the cabin and weighed 50+ pounds. 😀 It wasn't until the early 2000s that cameras got small/light enough to stick in a cockpit without getting in the way.
I can tell you as a 76 year old ex Army Aviator the map goes out the window. Your videos are Great!
Yes, especially when the cockpit window is open, upper cabin door is up, ramp tongue is in and ramp is down at level.
If fortunate, the unfolded at this point map, get's into the drive shaft hub at the aft xmsn and is exploded into confetti, that trails out behind the acft.
They are great videos, for a Navy guy...
@@wretchedexcess1654 Sounds like a good way to retrofit chaff dispensers.
Thank you for your service sir.
LOLL know how many maps I lost?? plenty when i put them on the window/ entry and selected it open in the RV1D
You motivate me to join my country's navy as an aviator... thanks for posting this
God bless America ❤from India 🇮🇳
@jivemike thanks mate
0 to 184 in 2 seconds that must be a thrill every time you do it, I can only imagine what it must be like. Great video again with the voiceover keep them coming and stay safe.
Fly Navy!
i have friends who have teslas and i just got a ride in a model S that can do 0-60 in about 3 second. i felt like my guts were about to fly out of my mouth. i can't imagine accelerating 3 times faster than that!
Where else do you get to do that ?...that's why they live in cramped quarters for months on-board a carrier instead of rolling out on a long runway to their wife and kids every night ...that's why they wear the wings of gold instead of the wings of lead...
Love every episode. Fighter pilot was Always my dream as a kid so you're allowing me to see it through your eyes. Im So thankful!!!!
Cheers!!
Pail, enjoyed the jam! My old flight instructor told me something similar three decades ago. With you it is charts, with me it was the pre take off checklist. Damn thing always got away from me after take off. After performing a clearing turn before “maneuvers”, that’s when it would fly back up in my face to say “how ya doin”. That’s when having the visor down on the brain bucket is a good thing. All the best! Mark- Fly Navy!
Fly Navy!
you folks are the best recruiters that i know of..stay safe..and thank you to all of you..maybe someday they will give the military and veterans more than one day to celebrate you all..
"Look mom! No hands! :D That was a funny one! :)
I crack myself up.
Just came back home from a local one-hour flight and open my computer to my fav channel. Showered and cranked a beer. The beginning of the weekend suddenly turned super duper. Thanks, Growler -
Cracking a beer at 1000, shipmate? Fly Navy!
For those unable to fly Navy the ride at Disneyland (California 's rollercoaster) feels the very same as an actual Cat Shot without the vertical spin at the end LOL.Thanks Pail for the gouge , an old time Fat Spad NFO said that.
Thank you Pail. Your video is one of the rare peaceful moments for me these days. I pray that in the very near future, I can enjoy your video and a relaxing Saturday morning, without having to work, travel, or accommodating guests.
What a nice comment. Nice to see that for a change.
Wow. 184 mph is some push off of mum. Loved the lesson Pail. Absolutely love these jams. All the best from the UK.👍
I got this crazy idea that those kind of repetitive sudden G forces are fine when you are sporting a pair of balls made of steel ,but it's not good for the lady drivers...I bet that we aren't allowed to talk about that
US carriers are "mom" British carriers are "mum" 😏
@Mark Ellinghaus Her majesty ship ..now that Charles is king ,Is it his majesty ship now ? I know you all aren't going to allow any ships to be named after Carmella...right?
@@nightflight1454 only the tugboats. The real ugly tugboats
@@richardclark6753 ...perfect ! Lol
Thanks for posting.
Wow love how you narrate and teach at the same time. So exciting!
It was actually your "communicate" part after years in YT :)
I would have loved to have had a flight instructor like pail when i got my ppl and instrument rating.l don't know this ,but getting to be a t-45 instructor as a secondary is a coveted assignment I would think .When my step father ,who was an E-2 pilot in Vietnam came back, they sent him to Pensacola to be a swimming instructor in the tank as a secondary ,I'm sure he would have rather been a flight instructor ,but it was better than flying a desk .
This is awesome, nice left handed move, I'll never tell anyone that's great (still made me jump), thanks Pail!
Ha!
😂😂😂 Awesome Jam Pail!! I really enjoy you tossing in your humor and personality. I had to crack up when you said “it never happened”. We had a similar term in the squadron”you lie, I’ll swear to it”.
Military humor is the best
Fly Navy!!’
Fly Navy!
Excellent! I’m glad He’s on our side!
These clips and narration are EXCELLENT! Thank you so much!
Glad you like them!
I can never get enough of this guy !!! He's a brown shoe all the way. His laid back style is so rare .
Beautiful job as usual.
Love it! I'd never thought of Communicate as not doing so! Will remember that next time I'm in the air.
Love the commentary, love the jams
Watching this for a second time waiting in line at "Thunderation" while on vacation and Lord, I've got about 20 people crowded up to me trying to watch and listen to this video, Pail ! Now your famous in SDC too. Hahahaha. I loved this video, Sir. You are so cool and I'm so proud of you. 🇺🇲❤️🇺🇲 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
Fly Navy 💫
P.S by the time I actually got to post this, we had started asking people who wanted to watch it where they were from. One guy said he knew you because you were a Growler pilot on the same aircraft carrier that he was on, the furthest person was from Germany and my daughter and I figured we gave out your channel name to well over 100 people, including the guys putting us on Thunderation. 😂😂😂 #TeamPail
Thanks, Tee.
Thank you Pail. Awesome stuff and great advice!!
Great video once again. I love these, keep them coming.
Bad case of "map lap"... Excellent recovery! Although a signature move/hip thrust of those maps back up onto the dash would of been mind blowing.
Absolute perfection!!!! when he speaks it's a poem? Because it's REAL!!!!! It's a matter of ......
💕 💕 💕
Your jams made my day!
Thank you!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Love it! Every pilot needs a sense of humour. Keep it coming and stick with it.
thanks for these always nice to hear you describe and of course the signature moves are always appreciated
I get a rush just watching your cat launches, I can imagine what it's like in person! 😬
My signature move was when my flight instructor exited my Piper Tomahawk at the fuel island and instructed me to go solo and perform a few touch and gos. I about crapped my pants. First solo, base, and final felt like the first trap. I have so much respect and admiration of what you do and have accomplished in your life and career.
Cheers!
Beautiful move, like it never happened before. Another great video and thanks to you so much Jams,
From old retired flight deck coordinator ADCS.
Cheers!
Fascinating to go frame by frame as the catapault is fired. It looks like you get bounced around the cockpit before even making 1 foot of forward movement (relative to the deck). Intense & fascinating. Thanks for uploading, smooth operator.
Cheers!
I love your voice!! 💕💕💕 It's so calming and smooth. You made my day, Thank You very very much!! 💜 💜
Solid work! A great pilot is built on a solid foundation of alcohol, sarcasm, laughter, esprit de corp, and a dislike for the same people…you embody that definition. Keep banging off the stops my man. 🍻
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
LUV!!! These voice overs! I find myself working "your" signature move in my truck ;)
Awesome stuff! Always interesting and requires close to zero braincells to watch. Thank you so much for doing all the work, hope you fly over soon!!!
So awesome to ride along with you on this cat shot! Thanks for the upload 😎
Cheers!
good job Voiceover...and right for ANC ...fly safe 😉🤙 :)
Thanks Pail ... Love the humor dude!
Love this little clip! Excellent.
You have the nicest voice! It’s so calming! just recently found your channel! Love it!
Welcome aboard.
One of my aviation influences was Bob Hoover. I met him once at EAA. Someone asked Bob how he had survived many test flight incidents. He replied that he learned to 'fly through the crash'. Stating the obvious, but another way of saying : FLY the airplane, then deal with the anomaly. Hoover was the real deal.
Absolute wild man!
Question, how much is your training consists of air ground combat? Percentage is good.
Dear friend , you made my day one more time !... fly safe !!!!!
Cheers!
Thank You for your excellent yt channel, it has given a lot for many of us 💖 💖 💖

Good evening from Idaho, happy flying. I surely miss.😊

Double signature move after take off. Hard core!
Love these postings Pail! Go Navy!
Fly Navy!
Pail, I can't get enuf! You are awesome and have the "right stuff" !!!
Thanks for the laughs! God Bless US Navy!
Haha, nice one! Reminds me of something that would have happened to me on one of my quite the first glider solos, unless I denied it ever happening!
During the initial climb under aerotow, I hit some (well known local) wind rotor hard and unprepared. I smacked my head against the canopy. Also, my water bottle and some assorted items launched straight up from the cockpit's side pocket, in which I totally did not stow such items. They ricocheted from the plexiglass and distributed themselves around my right shin area. Which you can't quite reach from the normal flying position, much less with your (normally) non-flying left hand. Of course, with any right rudder input, they progressed their way towards the pedal in question and its exposed linkage and cabling.
I had to compromise between two options: preferring to fly left-toes-in, so that I could try to kick back the water bottle and the assorted items with my momentarily free right leg, and not to fly too... noticeably, as to not have the tow pilot to question my solo status.
Great videos, thank you for making the stories behind available!
Heck of a flight. Cheers!
Man you have the baddest job on the planet. Awesome
Always dig the hand salute before takeoff.
Double signature move? You're off the freaking chain!!
Only thing I ever flew was a Cesena 150 and a Piper Cherokee; LOL! But it's so fun to watch these and see that the basic flying essentials apply everywhere; aviate, navigate and communicate. Signature Move!
You got good stuff sailor keep it coming.
Double signature move! I watch your vids for those signature moves! Awesome content!
Glad you like them!
@@GrowlerJams an idea: some merch dedicated to signature moves? I'll be the first one to buy😁
Nice video, and great commentary!
Can't imagine ever not getting a pucker thrill from that nor landing. Naval aviators are some rare breeds. Thx for video and whether are not you are Father Happy Dad Day.
You are absolutely wonderful. Fantastic commentary. oh ! Shh ! don't tell anyone.
Awesome! You rock bro. 🔥
Hahaha love the commentary, flying with the left haha and the sig-move, deny and tell no one lol. I can watch and listen all day mate, cheers from Australia

Double signature move is epic, sir

HAHAHA great video. Awesome to see a Top Gun type of aviator without the ridiculous ego. Just a cool dude letting cool stuff speak for itself.
Thanks!
Thank you!
That would be a thrill of a lifetime. Pail no Fail💪
Another great video Sir.
I appreciate that. Cheers!!
Still loving the commentary. Thanks for sharing

Short & sweet!
Nicely narrated!👍👍
Thanks!
No loose items in the cockpit! We won’t tell anyone! 😂 Thanks Cdr!
love this stuff!
Ever since I learned this about 5 years ago I apply it to almost everything in life.
Nice!
¡Gracias!
Thank you!
Sooo good. Fly Navy!
Awesome video, always good stuff!! I fly off Roosevelt in DCS, pretty sweet for a civilian here, lol..
Your commentary is priceless. If I had to choose someone to narrate my life, it's you 😂
Short but perfectly formed!
Fantastic - thank you for the crystal clear message. Now I have the routine for when I drop the map while driving our VW Caddy. Fly Navy, drive Volkswagen!
😂
You're just fun to listen to. Nice left hand flying there

Double signature move!

Semper Fi! Cheers.
There’s a statistic about eating while driving, more accidents are caused by reacting to spilled/dropped food than actually the distraction of eating. When you drop that french fry remember this lesson folks.
😂
this is the best thing I've ever seen on the internet
😎
Love it! Thanks
love the fast movers, find that piece of sky... 🎵r0ck0n gRowLeR jamS 🎵
Smooooth….and hilarious! 😂 When I was still a student pilot, cleared for solos, I very confidently took off for some pattern work. I got about 200’ off the runway when my seat in the Cessna 150 slid ALL the way back! As I am 5’6”, I was completely stretched out trying to “Aviate”…which by some miracle, I was successful. Got my seat pulled back up. Went around the pattern and landed full stop. Told no one, but learned a very good lesson for preflight check of seat locked in position!
🤣
I was anxious waiting for you to gooooo.
Just Awsome simply the best in the world!
😀smooth as...love it.
I'll just bet you're a great instructor
