  • From June-August I was struggling with cone-ing. My magic rings and the increasing rows after them were looking triangular, not flat like they’re supposed to be. All my plushies had pointy heads, noses, and bodies while I was going insane trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I eventually asked for help on instagram and I got a TON of different responses so I went through them and tried them all and finally found my solution!

    Crochet me zaddy has tips to working with plush yarn if you ever struggle with other issues. I know he mentioned in one video on UA-cam about stuffing the bodies a certain way to get rid of the cone issue. He works with plush yarns and makes plush patterns. He recently started a channel here and I watched a few of his videos. I plan on watching more when I finish at least half of the blankets I have set to make before I touch my first ever plush yarn to make a cute lil thing. I'm thinking I'd try the stress cats you mentioned before.

    I actually use a 8mm with my Bernat blanket 😅Because of my tension I don’t feel I have gapping or holes. It’s crazy how tension varies from person to person!

    I feel your pain during these experiments as I've worked them all. What eventually worked for me as a loosey goosey hooker 😂 was 12sc in MR. I start my MR bigger so all 12 fit nicely and I do not pull the tail to tighten. I now pull from the back ring not the second ring coming out of the first sc until the second ring is just closed then pull the tail to tighten excess closed. Carry on in pattern as written but I always count that first row as R2 to match the pattern. I now also insert hook, yU, pull thru, insert, yO, pull thru. This also helped me shorten my stitches as they were always taller than average hooker so my gauge was always off in height.

      lmao loosey goosey hooker is not something I thought I would read in my lifetime!
      What do you mean by pulling from the back ring? the BLO? I am intrigued!

      @@miss.a.crochet I heard Mikey from the Crochet Crowd say that years ago and it stuck 😂. Ok I just did a search because I'm not good at explaining. Look up Rose & Lily channel Magic Ring plush yarn. This is the way I was taught long time ago awesome to see it's a thing with plush yarn. But I use 3 fingers to make ring bigger and I make absolutely sure that first chain then sc is very loose so it's not a struggle when you pull on that back ring (or she refers to it as back strand I think). I really swear by the YU then YO though to make a sc.

    Thank you for such a useful video! I’ve had this problem for the last few months and it’s been bugging me so much, I’ve never had it before so I’ve been wondering what to do. One thing I tried was doing 8 stitches into my magic ring, that worked but made it very confusing! ❤

    • @miss.a.crochet
      @miss.a.crochet  10 місяців тому +1

      Right! When I start with 8 I always mess up and do 8,16,24,36 instead of 8,16,24 and back to the pattern making the next row 30!

    Ok so I may need to adjust my tension/hook. I tend to keep the project wrong side out for a while, but not the whole way through so I’ll try that too. I also stretch it. I saw that from pitachan I think about stretching and that helps, like you said further down but not right at the top. The thing I’ve found that helps was too from allfromjade and you mentioned it, start with MR 8, 16, 24, then continue with the pattern from the 5th row. Haha crochet is so crazy and weird but that’s what makes it unique. ❤ also thank you for trying all of these, I could feel your frustration 😂.

      @miss.a.crochet  10 місяців тому

      I had never heard of the “wrong side out” method before, it seems to really help me a lot!!
      Tension and hook sizes can be difficult to pair especially because it’s easy to change hook sizes and not so easy to change your tension!

    Living for the earrings! And how perfect of timing! I watched a video on this yesterday to see if I could fix a problem for a project tomorrow. Alllsssoooo. If you have any advice on how to use bernat blanket.. because I have so much of it but always end up frogging and going back to bernat velvet because it’s to hard to get it going and keep track and not miss a stitch and all that. I’ve been trying to use pipe cleaners as stitch markers so it’s really obvious but that’s tedious and they get caught sometimes and my cats like them. I’ve tried other yarn and stitch markers but they just don’t work as well. And I’m just tired of being frustrated

      Thanks! I got the earrings this August for my birthday!
      I’m glad it helped! Do you have any “regular” stitch markers? I have only ever used them. As for seeing stitches I would start with a pastel color (NOT white) and use a bright light to see the stitches!

    Do you have a video of you creating the not so pointy head? I am trying this method and doing the 6,12, 18, 24 etc with tail sticking out and still have a pointy head. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong!

    if i did your solution and following a pattern how would i tweak it so it would still come out so what im making ? as in the pattern im following for a plushy

    • @miss.a.crochet
      @miss.a.crochet  3 місяці тому +1

      So if you do 8sc in mr it would go
      8sc in mr (8)
      inc (16)
      sc,inc (24)
      3sc, inc (30) and then you would be back on track, if the pattern doesn’t get that big like the largest row is 24 then just continue with the next rows after you get to 24. Let me know if that helps, it’s a little confusing sometimes but once you get the concept it gets easier!

    I don't fully understand the reel that you shared at 21min... so you crochet "inside out" and flip eventually? or are you just having the "wrong" side of your work be outside now?

    • @miss.a.crochet
      @miss.a.crochet  9 місяців тому +2

      Yes to your first question! When I start crocheting I usually flip my project so the right side is facing out, now when I crochet I leave it with the wrong side out and then switch it before I start decreasing so the stitches don’t stretch/become deformed
      ! I have a link to the reel in the video description because I had to remove the copyright audio but she also explains it in the video!

    With crocheting, it's a lot of trial and error. As you have learn from this video what works for one may not work for the other, so you have to just keep trying to find the best solution that works for you. I have been crocheting for many, many years and there are times when I still get aggravated when something doesn't work like I want, especially when I'm in a time crunch. Like I said, what works for one may not work for the other but watching this video what I can tell you is that it looked like there wasn't enough stitches that cause it to cone, but I could be wrong there. When I do the six stitches in the magic circle, I mark both the first and last stitch just to make sure I have enough, and also it helps me to find the first stitch easier after tightening the magic circle. In all projects that include the magic circle, pulling it tight can be key but just be aware that pulling it too tight can also make it to bunch (or be pointy). Good luck and happy crocheting.

    With a larger hook size such as a 6.5mm an invisible decrease might reduce the holes that show, if that isn’t already the decrease you use 😊

    I’m only at the 12:30 mark but I’ve found that for me (same issues as you!) and what I do is skip the first row count 😂 I just start with ch12 in MR or I start with ch8 then do 1 sc, 1inc for the second row to get 12!

      I even tried triple inc (like 3 sc on one stitch) and as I continued with the pattern, which is like a normal sc inc, 2sc inc, the solution kind of worked, but my circle became so stiff and got curved. I experimented more methods I thought of and still didn’t work well that my neck hurts and the next day, my right thumb got stiffly hurt (like restricted)

    • @miss.a.crochet
      @miss.a.crochet  3 місяці тому

      I’ve never heard of someone using triple inc to solve the coning issue! That sucks that it didn’t work too well and that it caused you pain! wishing you a speedy recovery!

    This will be an unpopular opinion, there is no trick to fixing this. Anyone who learned to crochet prior to the animuguri craze on social media will tell you. Basics and practice makes perfect. An artist doesn't start with oil paints. Thet start with a pencil and eraser. Your tension is crazy loose. Learning ch, sc, hdc & dbl with swatching and tgen try making a baby blanket. That is the only way to perfect tension. YO for garments and blankets and YO on 3 dimensional items, including animuguri. Anyone I know that has been crocheting for 10+years had zero issues with making animuguri.

    • @miss.a.crochet
      @miss.a.crochet  5 місяців тому +1

      I respectfully disagree, I think it more has to do with the yarn because I never have coning issues when it comes to acrylic or cotton

    • @tkgosselin
      @tkgosselin 5 місяців тому +1

      @miss.a.crochet because smaller weight yarns like a 4 weight are easier to work with in general. The stitches are more prominent as well. Do you hold your crochet hook like a pencil or a knife? The knive hold will allow you to work with odd shaped objects easier along with the yarn under. The pencil hold is better on blankets and garments with the yarn over. This is regardless of yarn weights and content. I think if you dedicated a 1/2 hr a day to simple sc swatches starting with a 4 weight and recommended hook size and weave the yarn through your fingers starting over the index fin ger ans soley focused on maintaining your tension with a few wks you would be pretty close to perfect tension. Keep the swatches for watching your progress. I have been crocheting for 50 years. I am just trying to help you out. Try watching some YT fiber artists that have had a channel for over 8 yrs. Like Toni at TLC yarncrafts or Crystal at bag a day crochet. Even better is find a senior center in your area br8 g a few cups of coffee your yarn and a hook and you will be an expert in no time at all. Much love intended❤️
