    It doesn't matter what you say or how you say it, you will offend someone. If you do manage to say something that doesn't offend someone, it's likely not worth discussing anyways.

    I was born a year before Satch, and thinking about internet "etiquette" is such a weird thing for me to get my head around. So much of it has been "lawless" for so long, trying to reign in the chaos seems like a daunting task. I hope this or something like this starts catching on.

    • @Kamodomon
      @Kamodomon 8 років тому

      I have no doubt that it is. The internet has it's own "language" just like any other form of media or out there."What's the best way to express myself with books/movies/anime/videogames/twitter/facebook/music/etc to infinity". Each one of those has a different answer. Each one of us also has a different answer for each of those questions too. So you have a form of transferring information, not even 30 years old (depending if you think the internet was the World Wide Web), with so many different "platforms" still emerging and dying and changing and lasting with different ways to "talk", it's not wonder there is friction. But we also, very much have to remember that the internet isn't separate from the "real world". All the crap that we throw at each other, we brought from the outside. It's a complicated issue.

    Great video quality as always. I take issue with the second self-question though. One of the current problems on the internet is pepole speaking out for "other people who need a voice". The internet censors no one, there is no such thing as "someone who needs a voice", and people often feel that they have the power to give those inexistent groups a voice without being part of such groups. Speak for yourself and for people you care about, and let others defend themselves. They're intelligent beings just like you

    • @HerosofCarpeDiem
      @HerosofCarpeDiem 8 років тому +2

      I feel that he simply means someone who is being ignored or possibly the target of an attack. Perhaps defending someone in a respectful way is what he's saying? I imagine it's harder to make your point when you are the one being attacked than for someone who is on the sidelines?

    • @vlorenzosoleri
      @vlorenzosoleri 8 років тому

      Matthew Roop yeah, that's a fair point, it can be harder to argue when you're the target (even though it's the opposite for some people). However, I think you have to recognize when you're clarifying or adding to a conversation and when you're just white knighting away just because it feels good to be right. I still would default on not meddling, I just give others the benefit of the doubt and assume that they too have the use of reason until proven otherwise. But maybe that's just me avoiding unnecessary confrontations

    • @Nazareadain
      @Nazareadain 6 років тому

      I agree with this as a generality. I think there are people who need a voice who is able to speak reasonably on their behalf, but I don't trust the general public to be able to discern whom those people would be.

    It's the classic dispute between the liberties of the individual versus the outcome of the community at large. Nobody wants to be silenced or told how to talk, but when people feel the social pressure to be as emotionally engaged as their peers, the result is a negative experience for everyone.
    Like VirgateSpy mentioned in the comments, this suggestion of "is it necessary, is it helpful, is it kind" is what we've been taught since we were kids, but no one seems to have a problem with it until it's suggested towards adults. It's good advice, but we fear of the possibility of it being somehow strictly enforced on us.

  • @ThatBugBehindYou

    So what? Twitter is like Tumblr now? Everyone's getting offended?
    Why can't we just type and post? If someone gets offended by something you say without offence, that just means they are in a negative mind set anyway, meaning that no matter what you would say, you will just get in an argument down the chain anyway.
    And who is to say all arguments are bad? You might learn something by the end.

    • @GoldenGameBoy
      @GoldenGameBoy 8 років тому +2

      +ThatBugBehindYou I don't actually think the part about being nice isn't about offending someone but to win over.
      like how one would give a friends opinion attention more then someone one despise like a bully or a annoying classmate for example.
      And maybe you aren't the one satch is trying to reach out with this video if what you are saying is true. if you write something without focus on offending someone then you probably already in the guidelines of MMM.

    • @cococolonel
      @cococolonel 8 років тому +2

      +ThatBugBehindYou I was once told that it's not confrontation that gets you into trouble, but combat. Want to get all emotional about a serious conversation piece and hit Post so you feel better? Sure, go ahead. Keep in mind your post might not have the context needed to win people over. Your words will be no closer to getting the point across than never typing at all(and boyyyy- as someone who used to engage in those crazy Tumblr ess jay dub antics years ago this goes double).
      If all else fails, don't be a dick. That kinda helps.

    • @1NameGoesHere
      @1NameGoesHere 8 років тому +1

      +ThatBugBehindYou I think the problem is (more or less) that people are irresponsible about it. In a medium that is restricted enough as it is, it is hard to convey certain ideas. Twitter may not be the place for debates and whatnot, but it doesn't stop people from using it. You can post whatever you'd like. Fine, but most people say whatever is on their mind without thinking and believe that "freedom of speech" absolves them from any consequences (good or bad).
      This is just my two cents, but I think all he is saying is (do your best to) be mindful. Don't let your thumbs do the thinking. People will see you being the better person if you act as the better person.

      @travischance5332 8 років тому +1

      +VirgateSpy Lol, it's basically the same thing. If that's too "friendly" for you, try the phrase "calm, clear, concise." They'll probably still take it the wrong way no matter how nice you make it, so just try not to LOOK like you threw the first stone and then swing away when they get mad.

    • @AlquimistEd
      @AlquimistEd 8 років тому +1

      +Ragnar Earthwarden Attempting to restrict every internet conversation for the weakest common denominator is not only unproductive but impractical.

    • @travischance5332
      @travischance5332 8 років тому +1

      VirgateSpy I disagree. First of all, excluding the weakest common denominator from every Internet conversation by intoxicating or convoluting the discussion is impractical and unproductive because if you're not changing the minds or actions of yourself or others, you're not really doing anything. Second, calmly making consumable statements that make an agreeable point from a different point of view has the potential of positively influencing the opinions of people you previously considered opponents.
      Of course, not everyone benefits or even deserves such respect either way. It's not like it's an ethical law of the universe, obviously. A lot of people simply want to argue, to fight -- not exchange ideas. I'm not above fighting back sometimes just for fun.

    • @AlquimistEd
      @AlquimistEd 8 років тому +2

      +Ragnar Earthwarden No one is talking about excluding the weakest common denominator, but holding everyone else back for the sake of it makes no sense. That's the beauty of the internet and freedom, you can choose where from and what you want to absorb from it. Also restricting the exchange of certain ideas is nothing sort of backwards, humanity only got where it is now because of huge diversity and how more and more said diverse thoughts were liberated and tolerated.

    • @AlquimistEd
      @AlquimistEd 8 років тому +1

      +Ragnar Earthwarden Also "necessary, helpful and kind" does not in any way translate to "calm, clear and concise" those are independent from each other in every angle you look at it, as you can have any combination of those 6 and it could form a plausible statement.

    Interesting video, I just fail to see how facebook and twitter are so different. In layout and function sure but with Twitter you still create your "front yard" and "wall" as you described. You choose who to follow and tailor the experience to yourself. I can see what you say but you might not be following me and therefore not see what I say so doesn't that make it even more confined than facebook?

    • @carrottop1107
      @carrottop1107 8 років тому

      +rawblink Well I think you can make your Twitter profile private, but generally it's very open and you can take part in conversations that are going on between people you don't even know. The whole hashtag thing started on Twitter as a way for people to sort of throw their own two cents about something out there, and create a topic of discussion.
      Facebook does have hashtags, but your profile is closed to everyone except people you confirm as friends unlike Twitter's follow system which is more public.

    • @hypersonic1337
      @hypersonic1337 8 років тому

      I guess that's a different way of looking at it. And that is true. On Twitter you just follow who ever you want. On facebook it's a two way street. Both parties have to acknowledge being "friended."

    • @carrottop1107
      @carrottop1107 8 років тому

      Yeah. To some extent it's two sides of the same coins, it's still two different ways for the same society to express itself. Twitter feels more open though. You are always subject to public scrutiny since everything can be seen by everyone.
      I definitely get what you meant though. People like surrounding themselves with likeminded people, and despite having the whole worlds knowledge at the tip of your fingers a lot of people only choose to 'follow' people they agree with. A lot of people do end up creating their own social sphere on Twitter where they only really read the opinions of people who agree with you. It's really sad actually, Twitter has so much promise as a tool for free speech but so many people use it as an echo chamber to find justification for their own opinions.
      This is why I drink...

    • @artsyomni
      @artsyomni 8 років тому

      I think there's still a distinction, though, in regards to whether or not one or the other is your motivation. If you're motivated by the opportunity to give a voice to the voiceless, then perhaps it makes the most sense to do so with respect for those that you circumstantially end up speaking against, recognizing that those who seemingly oppose you may be fueled by their own motivations that they consider good or noble from their own perspective, given their own beliefs or convictions.

    • @erikdumas9873
      @erikdumas9873 8 років тому

      +Artsy Omni I agree, I think it's all about the motivation. Are you arguing with someone in order to bring them down, or is it to raise someone else up? You may be able to do both simultaneously, but if you're emotionally prioritizing tearing the opposing argument down, then you might be losing sight of what's important. This is particularly important in my opinion with arguments regarding concepts of social justice and equality.

    Agreed that we should be more sensitive. I also think a large portion of the issues with discourse on Social Media are caused by the experience design of these platforms. Thoughts?

    I don't really use my twitter, for the very reason that speech is limited. I do check in on my favorite twitter accounts from time to time for content however I hardly ever post anything. I liked the infographic though, very well done.

    Would you ever make a video on inspiration? This has always been a problem for me. I'd be working on a short story or world build and I always hit this wall. I feel it coming. I'm running out of ideas. And I don't know what else I can add. But I need that mysterious thing, because if I don't the story feels incomplete.

    I miss the use of forums. They were more categorized and a little more walled than twitter, allowed for longer digressions and more in-depth topics, did not segregate spaces into ego-controlled domains like Facebook pages, and were easier to moderate. Disqus threads may be the closest we have in the modern sense of the open seas of the internet.

    I wonder what you would think of tumblr. I like twitter okay, but as you mention it's very limited.
    Tumblr focuses even more on the conversation, rather than the person. But there isn't a character limit, giving people a chance to really get into an issue rather than just deliever a one liner on a situation that may be very complex.
    They could probably benefit from these guidelines as well.

    First things first, there's not such a thing as "the brevity of the internet", unless of course you're defining twitter as the internet. Also, twitter is an awful platform to have any kind of meaningful conversation, because its the only place where brevity is enforced. Maybe the title should've been "How to speak on twitter",
    Anyway back on topic. I see no purpose to such specific questions unless you're only talking about discussions around justice issues, in which case I'd say only the first one might be relevant, because if what you're saying is honest and lacks malicious intent, then there's no reason not to say it.

    Satch invoking Mike. Internet worlds collide..... Yes, perhaps there's something to your assessment of Facebook. But, it's also very valuable for me, as someone with anxiety and panic disorders, to curate my experience from Twitter's free for all. My experience on twitter is that what's expected is a take-all-comers-free-for-all of rhetorical smackdowns that look a lot like abuse. On facebook, I'm able to set myself up with the 12 people who I know, value, and do not see very often. Yeah, only 12 people, and all people I know offline. This means that we're not throwing shade all the time, and taking the time to speak in a respectful, measured manner. I use it to keep in touch with the people I really DO want to stay in touch with. It helps to keep incoming communication respectful, and it also means I have to restrain my own combative inclinations. I can't cast the broad net I did on social media a few years ago. I try instead to focus on those connections which are truly meaningful to me. So, perhaps that's a suburb. I think of it more as a small town in the country where everybody knows each other and manages to keep civil ties even through disagreements because we share a small community.

    While this is applicable to a lot of postings about political discourse, MMM isn't a one size fits all guideline. For example, what if speaking out for someone also includes speaking out against someone, or if you want to back up a claim by providing an example as a person so you aren't guilty of a straw man fallacy? And if you're part of a marginalized group, what if you have to speak out for yourself against someone directly antagonizing you? Ad Hominem attacks have lately been the bread and butter of online arguments and people often try to undermine your position by undermining your person. I also feel like the last question is a little watered down. I understand it means to say "Are you regurgitating an opinion from a group of people who share a self-ascribed label or is this something you genuinely believe in yourself?" but it sort of comes off as sounding like you're discouraging posting thoughts that sound like people who agree with you, which is silly because you would have ascribed yourself that label because those people are like minded, ie you wouldn't call yourself a feminist if you didn't mostly agree with the opinions, leanings and ideologies of feminism.
