As a Gen X'er myself, I don't see any generation more particular special than any other, but I would say we are the middle ground/segway from old to new methodology and that's the only thing that makes us somewhat important. plus our common sense, we will be the last generation to remember what life was like before the advent of computers, but we still had lots going on such as TV, Radio for social context. we also know the value of things and how to extend the life of objects well beyond their fair use date... life's been great as a Gen X'er and I an thankful for being born in 71. We have the common sense in abundance and truly know that there are only 2 genders..... I'm now 52 and have 3 kids, peace to you all. I hope you all have great lives.
The Internet as we know it didn't exist then. There were primitive forms of the Internet that were used by the government and the universities, though, but not by the general public. And its purpose was to exchange information. Social media, however, began its existence by the early years of the 21st century.
GenX is pretty much Silent Gen 2.0. We get forgotten a lot but we're sturdy, smart, work hard, and future generations won't forget us. We're the ones holding everything together right now, I honestly think the world would truly end without us, lol! Both of my Zoomer kids are a wee bit jealous of me because I heard all the best music and saw so many cool bands, before you had to sell your firstborn to get a ticket, like now. My mama is a Boomer, but she's a very cool Boomer, love my mama! Daddy was Silent Gen, he went Home 11 years ago. I learned a lot of resilience, discernment, and patience from both of them.
Born 67. Been fired once because I had a loved sis in law taken in a murder suicide and a divorce the next 18 hours. Hate cowards liars and anyone who abuses a child. If I offend, I am glad. GenX is the generation that had no sports heroes, and that is originally how we were defined. Apparently they forgot David and Kerry Von Erich, Jerry Lawler Harley Race, Bruno Sammartino, and by golly, Andre Pete Rose was robbed and I challenge ANYONE to look and tell me Charlie Hustle wasn’t robbed
Class of 1979 similar experience except the Tech part but I'm rocking it now 😎 great time in America except when the establishment crashes our economy periodically
I convinced my parents to get a PC in 1991. My Dad was an easy sell, my Mom not so much. I manged to convince her that it would help me with school, & that's what sold her. 😁 It wasn't a lie though, I totally took advantage of having a top of the line PC. Kids in my German class were in awe of my full-color map print-out of Germany for my regional customs report. 😊 After having the computer for awhile, (& teaching my parents about email), they LOVED it. 😄 They started telling everyone they knew about it & encouraged them to try it. ❤
No my dad teaches me how internet works his college was one of the developers of the internet he graduated the year after I'd anything they teaching us still
@earlbedfordjr83 Gen X only until 1980. You're talking about Gen Y. Gen X had Gen Z. Majority of Boomers are Milenial parents. Boob Tube Gen X no good. Basically, if they loved Friends or Seinfeld...run away. They've been boob tubed. We Gen X that are feral are the good ones. 😊
@@juliebella1221 Lol. Also about millenials. Boomers were who raised your generation. Gen X raised millneals. Every single one of the people I grew up with had gen x parents. With boomer grandparents. Im 41. Yall are the grandparents now. But there is a generational gap within millineals. 81-85 we were the last feral kids. We got the gen x upbringing without the generational baggage boomers gave yall. While being on the edge of the social changes ive always felt was forced. I understood kids a year behind me was being taught different, I watched it happen. Gen x teachers played thier role in the manipulation and brainwashing the millineal generation got. Theres a reason Xellinals truly are a different generation. We had your childhood, with the added benefit of gen x being young and hopeful. Before the reality set in 1993. Then xellinals and millneals fought in a forever war for 20 years so crooked politicians could get rich.
@earlbedfordjr83 Lol! I hear you. Those Gen X are the boob tubed. Boomers are the worst. The worst. Monsters. Gen X went to war with their own. We loathed one another. The cheerleaders and jocks were loathed. Me and mine all have school aged children. So, having children in your 30s is very Gen X. There's always teenage pregs of course. I grew up fighting as a toddler. Kindergarten was rough and it only got worse each year. I thought I ended someone at 9 years old. We were taught jujitsu and invented par core before it had a name out of necessity to climb walls, ceilings, roofs etc. for safety. Home, school and church were the most dangerous places and Mommy and Daddy were the monsters. No more wire hangers!!!! Lol!! Then there were the suburb Gen X. Spoiled brats that got whooped for real. Most Dads paid more attention to their second family....big divorce time. Men could xyz their wives on the street. The Burning Bed with Farrah Fawcett was the norm. Dead Beat Dads on Post Office walls. Father was enemy number one to children. Grand Father did bad things to the little ones. So rampant. They never protected the children. I felt so badly for CCD kids. 😞
Born in 1970. My vagest memory, was at graduation, i overheard some classmates say they werent raising their kids as they were raised. Never thought anything of it back then, but it makes perfect sense now.
We have always been and always will be the "outsiders". The untrusted snark on the sidelines who, with a sly, knowing expression, destroys your pipe dream plans in one statement. We are hated because deep down they know we are right. They are mad because we "didn't have to say it that way". But we are sick to death of trying to help those who clearly have no idea what they are doing only to be insulted, attacked and told WE are the idiot. Now, because we still can't quite bring ourselves to let them fail unforewarned, we state what everyone else is already thinking and walk, leaving it up to them if they want to face reality or not. We don't find comfort in such sugar coated dreams of tomorrow. We were the last feral generation. The last to take on adult responsibilities in childhood. The last to run free and wild through the neighborhoods and creeks and ponds and hills. We were faced with finding our own place in the pecking order of childhood. In short, we quickly learned what survived the test of the "real world" what "worked" and what was "movie bullshit". This means we have little tolerance for the non-pragmatic or ideal. We want the rough around the edges, perhaps ugly as sin solution that WORKS! For myself at least its never been "Form over function", or even "Function over form" but rather "Function over everything".
Me too because that's what i've always been told and what i've always believed. But I guess I'm in some reject situation Is being born in 83. Because that's what the new data says.... We were the last generation to see a different world using our minds… and not “we can think of an app and have A. I. create it…” we could have a jungle gym and see a pirate ship, a spaceship, a thunder dome, a prison girls put boys in and we had to escape and got chased around by the girls all recess, an arena for feats of strength and survival… just from having an imagination and actually going outside and actually physically interacting with other human beings instead of being glued to the internet.
Microsoft and Apple were created by Boomers(one of whom didn't even create Windows OS but took credit for someone else's hard work) and the majority of Nintendo's classic video game IPs from the 1980s and early 1990s were created by Boomer-aged Japanese men. The only Gen X-aged person from Nintendo I can think of who is well-known and well-revered for creating a few great video game franchises is Masahiro Sakurai(he's responsible for creating the Kirby and Super Smash Bros franchise).
I should show you more respect because you're taking credit for something someone else who is roughly your age did? And yet I keep hearing it's the younger generations that think they should get participation trophies? This is why no one listens to gen x. I would like safe spaces honestly. I felt like nothing was safe growing up some of our parents were damn right abusive. I see ppl going to prison now for things my family just did even in front of ppl. Yea I’m glad I wasn’t always cuddled but also can be jealous of other generations having loving families. There gotta be a good inbetween. I live in what should be one of the greatest times but didn’t get to experience most of the good things others my age did. Not til I was on my own at 16
Gen X here, class of 88. You better believe I was a helicopter parent to my Gen Z...when it came to the internet and social media. Some of the most dangerous "dark alleys at night" are online with the illusion of being safe in your home.
@user-wh5ir4fo4r But we've been running the country for a long time, so eventually one of us will have no choice. Which is how it works when you're Gen X.
I am Canadian and my Prime Minister is Gen X like me, unfortunately, he is an idiot. He thinks budgets balance themselves. He used to be a teacher, but doesn't understand math. It is embarrassing that he is Gen X.
"Carefree"?...there were some very big reasons that we were all latchkey children. The divorce rate skyrocketed, destroying families. The cost of living increased so quickly due to government mismanagement, that BOTH parents had to work, leaving their children to fend for themselves. MTV was our babysitter and Hot Pockets and microwave dinners were our meals.
Yup. I think some of these writers of these videos have revisionist history. Life was most definitely not “carefree”. It was hard being latchkey kids and raising ourselves. Yes we played outside more than kids do today, but we were also left alone too much and were forgotten by our divorced parents.
I'm a gen-x without any real mechanical experience which means all I can really do for a vehicle is plug a radiator, fix flats and change tires, change the oil and filter and top off fluids. Some of my gen-x chums were actually mechanics and I always respected that.
If you have that you’re doing okay. No mechanical or technical skill here, no degree and no $ to show for it. Quoting someone else which is only their personal experience up to now: “Some of us joined the military, some of us went to rehab, some of us went to jail” and some of us died. “Gen X doesn’t care/give a f***.”.
Why gen -x looks the same age as their adult kids. Why? I tell the kids we had a fountain of youth. It's called that green water hose. We drank out of that all year around!!!!!!!
Yes! Somebody calls me a boomer I take as much offense to that as a black person being called the N-word. I hate boomers. So if anybody wants to blame anybody for fucking this country up, I give you the baby boomer!
I can't stop thinking about how when we're shipped off to nursing homes, we"ll be the generation that knows all the words to baby got back. I mean the stuff we danced to we'll be doing in the home..:/ a lot of backs and hips are going to pop. Anything before that, it's fine, we'll handle it. Not bothered. The only bad thing is realising we're now the adult taking care of kids who are adults but deficient in every life skill we learned by 12.
as an elder gen z, i’m don’t even feel lonely anymore. seems like all people bring into your life is drama. i was tired of being used as that one “dr. phil friend” who is only addressed when someone has an issue in their life and needs someone to dump on. i have no desire or energy to listen to others’ issues anymore. i also have no desire to always be the first to reach out anymore. people complain about feeling “lonely” but no one actually wants to make an effort to connect. it’s a joke.
‘68 here. I was a latchkey/feral child. I wasn’t a helicopter parent. I let my boys make mistakes and learn from them. They are now successful, independent adults.
Not to mention we were and continue to be emotional and tech support for our silent generation grandparents, boomer parents, and babysitters for our millennial little siblings.
We bridged between the industrial age and the technological age so know both. We were also a little feral due to being kicked out of the house at weekends and summer evenings. No health and safety codling so we had to have our wits about us. We were beaten when caught misbehaving so we learned to not get caught. All this and more made us self reliant, tough and capable.
As the 7th youngest in the family (middle gen z, 06 teen), this is literally how my mom "raise" me. Not in a protective way, very abusive and narcissistic because she lives in a village where my cousin's parents lived (where famine season are cruel and Malaysia rice farming aren't a good reputation back then, I remember eavesdropping her conversation with the whole family talking about their past while also sharing their misery) None of this wouldn't happen if healthcare existed at that time and also free (East Malaysia is going to a downfall just like Japan's aging population) It's no wonder Gen z asians never live a peaceful life (capitalism and economic inflation at finest ✨✨)
Born in 1973. I LOVE being Gen-X. Self-consumed boomer parents, weak millennial younger siblings, and don't get me started on my gen-z kids, lmao. Sucked at the time, but these days I am glad my baby boomer parents ignored me and left me alone 90% of the time. I can survive ANYTHING. And so can most of my Generation. If global catastrophe hit i surmise we'd be the only one's left after it was all over.
Gen X'rs effn rock and I know because I am one... I was a surrogate mother to my 4 younger siblings from the age of 12-18..... But that was ok because it wasn't odd back then ahhhhhh the 80's.... 😊
We weren't called latch key kids because we were carefree! A lot of us worked in our parents' businesses and started babysitting at 13. We basically raised ourselves.
Um Gen X and a good amount of my friends in my 20s were gay men still prefer gay men and woman as friends then toxic males. Men were also 💩 a lot of the times. Personally I’m happy for the younger generation calling some of that crap out! So speak for yourself. We also were the generation of New Age music and hair mental so please stop! We had plenty of gay icons that just were not comfortable being themselves til later.
Number four, a correction. Gen X were the first generation to have a key to their own home as children. That is why they were called 'latch key' kids. The independence was a consequence of the neglect we lived with. They raised themselves while their parents (both single parent and couple) were working. They became helicopter parents in an effort to make up for their neglected childhoods. Also, the bean counters like to count gen x as starting in 1966 and running until 1986. The boomers run from 1946 to 1964. All through my growing up, they consistently 'forgot' 1965. Please remember that and dont start including it now because its suddenly 'convenient.' 'Gen X your time is coming.' We don't care. Many of us are surprised to still be here, growing up with the imminent threat of nuclear annihilation, the AIDS epidemic, the drugs, Vietnam, etc and etc.
This! My kids are 9 & 6, they spend almost all day outside without supervision. (After doing their chores) I don't want my kids to need courses in "adulting" when they grow up.
You definitely were you guys were always scared of your Shadow and never let your kids go out and played like you guys say you did back in your day now they can't even tell what gender they are
Exactly . We have lots of problems with millennials at workplace . Disrespectful, entitled for everything, super ambitious for their career, walk over our dead bodies

Never! We are immortal! As a collective generation we were exposed to so many artificial colours, flavours and preservatives that we will never decay, we will never die. We will scream ‘F**k you!’ And beat you down with our Zimmers at 192 years of age! We will smother you with our flannels without beating an eyelid. We will take your eyes out with our lawn darts and slap bands! All the whole while bopping along to our mix tapes, sipping Everclear and HiC!
My Gen X parents were everything but helicopter LOL that song as long as my chores and homework were done and I wasn't out past 10 on the school night I could do literally pretty much whatever I wanted
As a Gen X, I can tell you that my grandfathers generation put men in space for the first time, and even landed men on the moon for the first time. I would argue that as a Gen X we are not the greatest generation. However, we may be the greatest generation still alive.
Everyone’s time comes lmao… Gen x here to me the biggest difference is as the generations went on we went from taking responsibility for our actions and doing something about it, to not taking responsibility for anything and it’s always someone else’s fault!! Now there are so many professional victims!! What a joke of a society! SMH 🤦🏻♀️
And to think, my siblings and I were "latch-key kids" in the 1960's. Our grandparents lived on the street behind us and we had keys to their house and after school we best be at one house or the other unless we had permission to be elsewhere. If the phone at home rang and wasn't answered s few minutes later it'll be ringing at Grandmother's and if that phone wasn't answered 3 butts could be in sling.
I didn’t graduate high school till 1995 born 1976 so when I had my first born till 1997 both of us not Hellicopter parents. Our house is the one that the neighborhood kids come play in the backyard building forts and having fun
I heard that for twenty years : Today's youth are so tech savvy. Wrong. Yes they learn to use apps and post on Tic Tock...but I worked in a college and most couldn't handle a copier/ printer, read full instructions or understand how the internet works: Student at my office door: "Ahhh, internet is down." Me: "Yes, we're aware." Student: "Can't you fix it?" I can't...even ...go there... They may be used to technology, but they can barely read and certainly not write by hand, or on a word processor either. After attempting to print a paper with no result, they come to complain. I then have to explain the 24" x 36" sign in the entry facing them says "Printing is down." Gen Z is addicted to social media, less emotionally mature, more suggestible and more self-righteous and narcissistic than any generation I've seen in almost seven decades. Dr. Filby, your information is based on data, which has value, but it does not equate with experience.

We were the first tech kids but we didn't let social media ruin our lives!
Because it didn’t exist then. Duh
@@magau3698 this makes me question gen z in every way
Introverts are western and extroverts are Asian
The Internet as we know it didn't exist then. There were primitive forms of the Internet that were used by the government and the universities, though, but not by the general public. And its purpose was to exchange information. Social media, however, began its existence by the early years of the 21st century.
Yes but lets be real, IF it did exist, it would have ruined us too. I feel sorry for kids growing up now.
My parents were SG, I think that's why they told us to figure it out.

Gen X realised they needed to teach their parents technology and learn technology from their kids
After having the computer for awhile, (& teaching my parents about email), they LOVED it. 😄 They started telling everyone they knew about it & encouraged them to try it. ❤
Na some of us just figured it out for ourselves cause we are used to teaching ourselves 💩
Nope, we are good at tech
My kids learn from me. I am IT to them.
No my dad teaches me how internet works his college was one of the developers of the internet he graduated the year after I'd anything they teaching us still
How many times have we heard our time is coming....we've been forgotten since birth...we'll out live you all! 😊
Lol I feel you
81-85 is the forgotten ones. Gen X created the millineals. People also forget that.
“Gen X, your time is coming.” No shit… so is yours …the difference between us is we’ve known that all along, and we still don’t give a fck.

Without Gen X, companies like microsoft, apple, nintendo, etc wouldnt exist so millenials and gen z should show us more respect.

We bridged between the industrial age and the technological age so know both. We were also a little feral due to being kicked out of the house at weekends and summer evenings. Number four, a correction. Gen X were the first generation to have a key to their own home as children. That is why they were called 'latch key' kids. They became helicopter parents in an effort to make up for their neglected childhoods.

"Printing is down."
