@@kingced741 If you're talking about Gran Colombia keeping Panama, yes, they could, Panama was a little abandoned by the Colombian goverment but mostly by the Conservative Party of Colombia, by the time the US was interested on building a canal, there were disputes between Liberals and Conservatives about the topic, with the Liberals being in favor to be Open with the foreing powers and let them build the Canal, (Plus, the Liberal Parties in Colombia and Venezuela kinda liked Federalist ideals) and if Gran Colombia wanted to survive, the goverment would have needed to stick with the Liberals in order to keep Venezuela and Ecuador content with their autonomy. Also, high commands of the region were powerhungry, so those countries were mostly unstable during that period, and keeping Gran Colombia alive would have required to put an end to those disputes. (Probably with a strong and numerous army that could be loyal to the state and some sort of temporary dictatorship just like Venezuelan president Juan Vicente Gomez did from 1909 to 1935, ending the warlord era in Venezuela)

Solano Lopez really trusted that the Federal Party would join him in Argentina (Argentina was an unstable country and the Unitarians had recently seized power through a civil war)The federals always saw the paraguay war in a very bad way and were anti-Brazil, while the unitarios only wanted to avoid more wars and gain territory from the indigenous. Some provinces rebelled but not with such force and too late, the federals saw Paraguay as another decentralized Argentine province and viewed the unitary government's war as collaborating with an invader. the federals did not have much confidence in lopez since before he had feared a small war against the province of corrientes for missions and he was willing to collaborate with brazil in the guerra grande against the confederation. but if lopez managed to get the feds to take power, they would not hesitate to support him in a war against brazil and support the white government of uruguay. If the Brazilian naval supremacy in the rivers anyway, a Paraguayan victory against Brazil would be very difficult. also keep in mind that solano lopez was not so crazy at the beginning of the conflict, he wanted free navigation of the rivers rather than an outlet to the sea and he really believed that if no one stopped brazil it could annex uruguay and even later seize all the la plata basin. In this scenario, Paraguay would achieve, just like Argentina after the real war, victories in terms of the disputed territories of missions and the Chaco, Brazil would lose the egemony over the cuenca del plata, perhaps also with small victories in disputed territories and would have an ally or puppet government of Uruguay

Funnily enough, if Brazil lost the war, the monarchy would probably be strenghtened in the following two decades, since the army grew greatly in political relevance following the victory in Paraguay, and was pretty much the breeding ground of republicanism in the country, which would lead to the coup in 1889. However, unrest among slaves would still prove an issue, since freedom was offered in exchange for service, and probably slaveowners would try to keep hold of their workforce even harder in a scenario of defeat. Maybe abolition would happen sooner, at a point when landowners hadn't yet been swayed by republicanism under the illusion that the new regime would pay reparations to slaveowners, or even reinstate slavery. To be honest, the monarchy could still very well fall to other reasons, such as the lack of popular representation in politics, or just general poverty and underdevelopment.

One of his most important acts was negotiation of peace between the Argentine federation and Buenos Aires (they went on a civil war where Buenos Aires decleared independence) and the recognition of Paraguay in Europe. Francisco also tried to intervine diplomaticly between the Uruguayan civil war, but Brasil didnt let him. During the war he tried many time to negotiate peace with the allied powers, the most important, the interview of Yataity Cora in 1866, with Argentine president Mitre. But Brasil didint want to negotiate and wanted to fulfill the treaty of the triple alliance, so brasil forbade his allies to ever negotiate independetly with Paraguay.

good video, but actually paraguay was not a industrializing state, it was a backwater dictatorship, that stuck almost 40 years isolated, and it's main export was yerba mate, a culture that brazil had surpassed paraguay in both numbers and tecnology. the paraguayan army was big, but not modern, most of their soldiers didn't have shoes, most of their weapons were from the napoleonic wars, and they didn't have a chain of command, with all the orders being personally given by solano lopez

10:18 I don't think Paraguay would chose the Central powers since they knew it would be suicide at long run. Actually I find that it would be more likely that Paraguay would try to have a good military so that Brazil and Argentina would think twice before invading. WW1 would still happened anway, in a good scenario for Paraguay (had good leaders and people, good democratization and some luck. They almost pulled a victory against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay so we can expect a continuation of good people that ensured the benefits of Paraguay, if they had a crisis, then the whole Latin America would have as well so not to worry about it) they could play the game of waiting, until 1917 when the US jointed the war, picked the Entente as well and done, Brazil and Argentina couldn't have any reason to go to war against Paraguay without pissing off the US, the Britain and the French. Then modernizing as quick as possible after the war and tried becoming a good friend to the US. When/if the The Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay happened in the Interwar, knocked Bolivia as fast as possible so that Brazil and Argentina couldn't take the chance to attack (and frankly they wouldn't really have a good chance, since they would be busy at the failing economy). When WW2 happened, pick the Allies when the US joined the war. Still a good friend with the US and tried not to have rebellions with large scale like the rest of Latin America (well, having the US backed and a much more robust nation built up unlike other Latin America could make this easier to achieve) After that you would have the much stronger and much more stable Paraguay and it could be the ideal Latin American nation that could potentially become a 1st world nation today.

The Chaco war would have been probably like the Austro-Prusian War here, since even in real history Paraguay was successful considering the lower population and economy in comparation to Bolivia.

Good video as always, just a slight correction the flag you use for Argentina is the confederacy flag, this is wrong because the unitarios (Aka the liberal centralist party) won the political conflict in Argentina and dissolved the confedarition, changing the flag to the good old light blue and white with the yellow sun, if you want to know more about the civil wars that argentina had during this period I recommend you read about Artigas and other unitarios like Mitre or Sarmiento, that were the presidents during the praguayan war that you mentioned in the video.

Argentinian here, Paraguay declared war on us because we didnt allowed for them to cross our land and fight in the uruguayan civil war(Basically Solano believed it was a "now or never" kinda moment) much of the initials gains are simply because both nations didnt actually considered war with paraguay a reality, most of our army was doing border control in the south against the natives, and the brazilians had a small garrison in the mato grosso.
I dont see paraguayans ever winning in this scenario, the declaration of war made it so the whole of our country made two things it didnt really wanted to at the moment, wage a costly war and alling itself with brazil. I believe a far more interesting scenario is asking what if Solano didnt declare war on three nations at the same time, i dont see argentina joining a offensive brasilian war against paraguay, we would surely would like to exploit both brasilian and paraguayan weakness from the war without being in it, and our country interior would resist far greatly that it already did in OTL any intervention against paraguay for a lot of reason(brasilian enemy, political alignment of the locals with paraguay, despise of the central goverment, its taxes and conscription, also most of our army was small and guarding the south against natives), without argentina in the war, the brazilian campaing becomes far harder mostly on the grounds of logistics

    • @nehuen9333
      @nehuen9333 Рік тому +2

maintaining argentina's semi neutrality(we supported the side of the uruguayan civil war which the paraguayan war against) or just making it so argentina had to wage an offensive war from the beggining could have gave to the paraguayans far more advantages than that of a failed offensive through our north filled with errors and mistakes. And i think is possible, the war was not popular, nor the government, and we always saw brazilians as our enemies at the same time most of the north saw paraguayans as brothers

What if Frederick III of Prussia/Germany didn’t smoke?
He lived 99 days into his emperorship, yet he was a beloved ruler by his people, he kept up with Bismarck as opposed to his son, he was married to one of Queen Victoria’s daughters, and he spent much time in England before his reign. Say he lived for another 30-40 years, since he died at 56, he could of changed the landscape of Germany and the world. A few possible ideas-
    - Germany keeps good relations with Britain, never building up that sweet sweet navy that Wilhelm loved so much
    - Germany doesn’t take as much in the pacific, seeking to not upset the Japanese or other great powers
    - Germany keeps everyone at Arm’s length with the French as Bismarck wanted
    - Germany starts to liberalize and create institutions that could have checks and balances
    - The Agadir crisis never takes place and Germany isn’t seen as an aggressive superpower
    - WW1 never happens or a bunch of smaller more localized wars take place instead
    - Maybe one of his other kids takes the throne instead of Wilhelm? Wilhelm and Frederick didn’t get along and I can’t see that changing even if Frederick’s reign is successful. I could see a dynastic crisis coming up from this.
There’s a mod for HOI4 being built around this, and I’ve always loved the idea of such a timeline, but not many UA-camrs have covered it before. Would love to see this one (:

    Just some corrections
1 Paraguay was not even close from being industrializing and was even more rural than the neighbors, it was the poorest and less urban of the three by a wide margin and the economy was almost exclusive based on tea exports and subsistence farming
2 The Paraguayan army was not technologicaly more advanced than the brazilian or Argentinean one, they had recently bought modern rifles but less than a tenth of the army was armed with them
They lacked in artillery and most soldiers used outdated flintlocks and garrunchas, solano lopez suposedly tried to make reforms in the structure but they were unsuccessful
3The reason why the river control was important was not because of external trade, independent of naval auperiority, la triplice alianza controlled both sides of the la plata estuary and brazil had a see going fleet big enough to block paraguay even if they had won
The reason is because paraguay is, with the other theatres of the war, the greatest inundated superficie in the planet, ao in the raining season is impossible to move supply, troops or even information
Thats why humaita was the greatest battle of the war, not tuiuti
And the greatest advantage of paraguay was, beyond its unity, the adaptations to the swamp environment
4Despite that paraguay HAD A GOOD CHANCE and could had made a bet for the south of brazil
The point is that brazil, argentina and uruguay were more like a coalition of big landowners and their areas of influence than countries, they spent the last century at war with each other, and most important, with themselves, buenos aires did not control the best army in the country, the professional army was recently destroyed in a war with brasil and scatered into semi feudal states, if corrientes, santa cruz and entre rios decided that paraguay was a better option, they could muster more soldiers and cash than buenos aires, they had defeated the argentinean army before
The point was just that paraguay did not presented a better option
And brazil, the center west, where paraguay invaded, was considered inconsequential and was mostly uninhabited, sending troops from bahia or rio to mato grosso would be unthinkable if not trough argentina
And the south, less than 20 years before the south of brasil was independent, having defeated the brazilian army for more than a decade
This modern army of the south was not deffeated, just incorporated into the main brasilian army with many of the heroes of the paraguayan war, beeing veterans against brazil.
Brazil, the south of brazil, los blancos uruguayos, los colorados uruguayos, entre rios, buenos aires, corrientes, the caudilios, were all sides that spent the last century fighting against each other, all paraguay needed to do was make one fight aginst the other again
And that was what he was hopping
But the timing was bad, the civil war in uruguay who was suposed to last years took only a month, and the angentinean rebels decided to make a coalition against paraguay
But the result would probably be paraguay having some puppets for a few years and them brazil and argentina suporting them to become independent or interviening in the chaco wars
At most argentina would break up
And maybe parts of brazil too
But not many different borders or results

In this map you have to take in account that argentina would likely dissapear and desintegrate in multiple provinces because, just by losing the Battle of Curupayty that sparked the civil war they had, imagine if they lost the war, Argentina would be destroyed economically and desintegrated, also, obviously Paraguay would take modern today Formosa province which was in dispute in the real war; and maybe some more provinces, with the power held and Bolivia losing the pacific war, Paraguay would totally dominate the Chaco Region and expand more than what it has now in its modern borders, Brazil would have to respect Paraguay and with the war lost there would always be instability and economic crisis, having the advantage of defeating Argentina and now an open via to the atlantic Paraguay would certainly be a stronger match than what it was for Brazil, Paraguay would pass to be a regional power at least up til WWII

The biggest problem about war in south america was always the Amazon rainforest.
Its literally impossible to have a decent logistic in such harsh conditions, so as consequence wars are localized to small scale theaters. Rarely able to escalate in such scale like in Europe or North America or even as Asian scales.
But that doesnt mean that war can not happen. Its just more constricted, not less violent or important.
Point of interests assumes a more significant role in these conditions and any war efforts have more deeply meanings and importance and consequences.
So it means that we cant underestimate wars in South America just because they looks small and contained.
Its a false feeling. Althought for now, ars in South America had limited consequences over the world due to the fact that South America was under developing. But it will be different in future, when South America will have more relevance on international scenary.
By the way, I put the 3k like over this video. 👍

yeah there is something, i remember when i learned a bit about triple aliance, if paraguay won without loosing territory, population and got that destroyed like in this video, would colombia and paraguay have same friendship as now? since colombia helped paraguay in that time and made a theme between both countries, as a colombian learning history i just wonder that kinda hard now, since seems like paraguay would still have conflict between it's neighbors, and would literally get like... really small, that's my wondering

The only way Paraguay could ever had a chance of winning this war was by kept the rivers opened for navigation at all costs, because that was the only way it could have access to the Atlantic Ocean and thus trade with the rest of the world. When Brazil achieved naval supremacy, it was all over for them. The reason the war went on for so long was because of lack of information about the terrain (there was almost no maps about that place because of how sparse and isolated Paraguay was at the time), lack of trust by the argentine and brazilian's high command (they do not trusted each others intentions even though they were allies at that war), logistics, diseases and the fact that Paraguay now was at the defensive so it was way more easier for them because they had proper knowledge about their own territory

Paraguay's leadership had Japan'd itself and closed out all outside imports, etc. This forced them to industrialize BUT also prevented outside rich countries from exploiting their country with their wealth before their poorer people could. They industrialized rapidly by learning how to make the goods that other countries were wasting ALL their money on importing. And there was much stronger USA UK etc influence AGAINST Paraguay than their simple "dislike". They pushed Argentina etc and gave support to PAraguay's enemies. If Paraguay had their way, they would not have gone to war, but rather they would have focused on rapid industrialization. They were doing what was best for their country, and their people. And that was a dangerous idea when United Fruit, etc, was toppling countries like dominoes under their countrol.

Paraguay was never that industrialized and very dependent on British imports, if this war never happened, then they would be able to start a industrialization, but all was lost in 1864.

I think you're underestimating how fast populations can grow when they have little in the way of resource constraints and there's a vital need to breed. After the black death and various anti-jewish purges in the HRE, the ashkenazi population grew from 350 to 30,000 in 150 years. using that population growth rate, Paraguay's population probably could've grown by a factor of around 3.3 between 1870 and 1910, before WWI, and that population would have a LOT of young 20s men for fighting wars with.
Testing this rate in modern states to see that it's viable, you can see that Brazil grew at about this rate before 1990, so it's viable in Latin America to grow at that pace. Meanwhile, in this alternative timeline, Argentina and Brazil would be resource constrained from losing prime agricultural land and accommodating war refugees from their former territory. Paraguay would have a population of roughly 1.3 million. Brazil and Argentina's population (assuming they grow at the same rate they did in our timeline, not even factoring in hypothesized resource constraints) would be 22 times larger than Paraguay's, this sounds impressive until you realize that this factor was 26 at the start of the Paraguay war. Far from long term trends favoring Brazil and Argentina, it's possible Paraguay would retain or even grow their relative level of power assuming they keep the same technological and institutional edge over their neighbors.

Because of Paraguay's insanely high casualty rate, eople overlook how gruesome this war was for other countries as well.
The country that lost the most people in this was wasn't Paraguay. It was Brazil. Brazil lost somewhere around 200,000-350,000 people largely due to the famines and diseases caused by the war. Which would mean Brazil lost 2-5% of its population.
Argentina, proportionately suffered the least and it was catastrophic as well. The lower estimate of Argentian losses are 12,000 but higher estimated are 45,000 dead. That is 0.6% - 3% of the population dead.
Uruguay definitely suffered the second worst in this war. They had a very tiny population. There losses are 8,000-15,000 deaths. Which would be 3.2% - 10% of its population dead. Not to mention Uruguay was already recovering from its own civil war.

Just one thing, why would Brazil surrender? As you said, if the Empire wanted it, it could have brute forced its way into Paraguay, debt was not a problem, and Brazil did have the capabilities to rebuild its fleet. In our world the reason Paraguay lost 70%+ of its population was that Brazil wanted to kill Solano Lopez getting revenge for the early massacres perpetrated by the Paraguayan army in the frontier reason, not matter how bad the human cost got for both sides the Empire kept pushing on not stopping because of its losses nor the complete annihilation the paraguayan people. If what motivates Brazil is getting revenge, it has the support of the world superpower ( Brittain) and economically wise maintaining the war indefinitely is not only possible but also desirable ( Brazil whole foreign policy during the 19th century consisted of ensuring safe passage through the Platine River basin, that's why Uruguay is a nation instead of an argentine province) why would Brazil sue for peace? The only outcome for Paraguay was total defeat. They sealed their fate when they invaded without warning and spilled our blood on our soil. All they did during the war was to delay the inevitable reckoning.

I want to continue this scenario as a what if History went perfect for Paraguay, at least in some way. I think it would be possible to have the dictator of Paraguay come to the realization that his position is untenable like that and that liberalization would need to be undertaken as there are two far larger powers that want their land back, Paraguay could potentially renounce its claims on Bolivian territory to get the Bolivians neutral but I think that's about it. If they can modernize with limited democracy but obviously not full democracy as the dictator wouldn't give up power. But if we could get Paraguay onto the track of democracy past the dictators lifetime than they should be able to integrate Uruguay with promises of equal treatment they should be able to keep conquests with outside help but taking more is out of the question without the removal of the dictator

Since at that time, the cultural differences between Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina were none, I think for Paraguay to really win, it would mean a puppet government also in Argentina.
Eventually railing up all Platinean states against Brazil.
In a more total victory, we could see, eventually, puppet states of Paraguay in Southern Brazil (Río Grande, Santa Catarina) and Uruguay getting back the Misiones Orientales.
And all of these states (minus the Brazilian ones) could se some sort of unification if Solano López is willing to give up some power.
So the Paraguayan War would meant the creation of a bigger Argentina, more federal and more opposed to Brazil.
Sarmiento itslef had the idea of Unification with Paraguay and Uruguay, so if Solano López does not do an extermination of the opposition, the liberals could have had a place in the political system.
