Battle of Tuyuti 1866 - War of the Triple Alliance DOCUMENTARY

- As Spain lost control of its colonial possessions, from the ashes of their old Viceroyalty of the Rio De La Plata the nations we now know as Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay slowly formed. In a small civil conflict between two political parties in the smallest country in the region, Uruguay, the greatest war in South American history was sparked. The War of the Triple Alliance or as it is also often called the Paraguayan war culminated at the battle of Tuyuti fought in 1866. This battle is widely considered the Waterloo of South America.

As a Paraguayan I will never stop thanking you for the video. War is the worst instance that society has when you can not coexist diplomatically, that's why it's important that we all try to study it and learn something from it. That way you avoid that the same mistakes are made and, most importantly, the bonds between brother countries be strengthened by overcoming and forgiving old mistakes
And we are grateful, that you guys didn't turn the comment section into another holy war. We were worried, to be honest, but you proved us wrong, thank you for that. The future is bright for those, who can learn from their mistakes and move on.
As a Brazilian, I reinforce what my Paraguayan brother said and would like to add that all the nations involved in this war have been at peace with one another for 150years and are commercial partners in Mercosul, only expressing bitter rivalry in football and friendly jokes
As a Brazilian I can say: those who like war are because they have never been in one. Hugs to the South American brothers.
Slavery is the worst that can befall a society.
War is the flip side of peace. If you want the latter, prepare for the former
As a Brazilian, I would like to say sorry for the count D'eu atrocities on Paraguay

Paraguay never recovered demographically from this war. The Argentinians wanted to split the country with Brazil, but the Brazilians wanted to maintain it as a buffer state and it's the only reason Paraguay even still exists.
it was around 300,000 , 100.000 would die in the conflict including more than half of the male population.
And where would it be today if it hadn't lost 60% of its population? 90% of men were gone, imagine the impact on the society and economy.
ShamanMcLamie Paraguai its pretty good right now, its not a Brazil but is growing!
Paraguay is currently a great country to live in; much better than Brazil at least
Adan Silveira eu moro aqui e não é tão melhor assim...
Around 90% of Paraguay's male population died in the war WOW.
Yep, a bloody conflict.
90% of the men died and 60% of the population, died as well
During and after the war. But not all died, many have just flee to other countries.
It pretty much mirrored the Confedefate south after the US Civil War which had only just ended around the time that this war began to hit its zenith, save for the weird part that the South never engaged in much, if any partisan fighting. Praise the Emperor, I love history.
This is an overestimated percentage as we don't know the size of the Paraguayan population at the time but it is believed that about 40% of the population died from sickness, starvation and in combat, which is still terrifyingly high
Imagine being the general who got shot off his horse three times.
"Bloody hell that was close"
"What the hell it happened again"
"Oh for fock sake, stop doing that!"
He either was very unlucky or putting himself out there in the frontline for real, either way he was Surely very stubborn and brave 😅 he is the patron of the Brazilian army's cavalry, general Osório

@@Tobi-ln9xr With the exception of the USSR, the countries you mentioned were not that big (I'm not considering colonies), Brazil is bigger than the USA.And even if we weren't bigger than the allies, it was the 19th century, technologies were still limited, and resources count for more than size, and no one had more resources than Brazil in South America.
@@SamuelRodrigues-hr6ii
The US is also bigger. The USA are 9.834.000 km2 big and Brazil is 8.510.000 km2. And you are absolutely delusional when you compare Brazil to any European empire. Brazil wasn’t even slightly as powerful as Germany, France, Britain or Russia.
Just a small overlook over the global superpowers from the 1880s up until the end of World War 1 in 1918.
Biggest navies: 1. British Empire, 2. German Empire, 3. French Empire
Biggest economy: 1. British Empire, 2. USA, 3. German Empire
Most powerful army: 1. German Empire, 2. British Empire, 3. French Empire
Biggest colonial power: 1. British Empire, 2. French Empire, 3. German Empire
And France, Germany, Belgium, Britain etc had more resources than Brazil because of their colonial empires.
Brazil always has been only a regional power in South America without any influence on the global stage. Brazils history is comparable to the history of Canada or Australia, a country which mostly "just existed“. And technology was pretty advanced for its time up until the outbreak of WW1.
To compare Brazils strength with that of a global empire like Germany, Britain, Russia or France is absolutely delusional. And Brazil couldn’t even properly defend itself against the initial first attack by Paraguay…
South American history was 100% ignored in my Canadian education. Most people here barely know who Bolivar was. I think these videos are of great cultural value as well as entertaining. Keep up the good work.
We will, thank you!
Bolívar? The dictator? A overrated man
San martin is even more ignored.

In 1851, Argentina declared war on the Empire of Brazil, the Argentine leader, Juan Manuel de Rosas, said: "Poor Brazilians, I will make your Emperor my servant / butler." In 1852, the Imperial Army and argentines rebels marched triumphantly in Buenos Aires, while Rosas fled in disguise and embarked on an English ship. Before his departure from Argentina to England he said: “It was not the people who brought me down. It was the monkeys, the Brazilians ''
Presidents leading troops to battle, such a weird thing to hear in my opinion.
Yeah, fascinating! Take a look at our video on the battle of New Orleans - US forces were often led by the governors and senators.
Don't worry i've watched all your content. There are some famous examples of generals in the US civil war being mostly political appointments at the onset of the war (feels so Roman lol). That lesson was learned quick though.
Redbad of Frisia solano its the only president to die in a battle leading a army!
_Presidents leading troops to battle, such a weird thing to hear in my opinion_
Indeed it was. Bartolomé Mitre, president of Argentina, was named Commander in Chief of the Allied forces as per disposition of the Treaty of the Triple Alliance. He would not last the entire campaign, however, as revolts within Argentina would force his return to the country.
And another weird thing for you, a scene taken from more ancient times, perhaps:
A few months after the Battle of Tuyutí, a Paraguayan envoy under white flag approached the Argentinean lines with the following message, from Solano López adressed to Mitre:
“Cuartel General en Paso-pucú, 11 de setiembre de 1866 - Al Excmo. Sr. Brigadier General D. Bartolomé Mitre, Presidente de la República Argentina, y General en Jefe del Ejército Aliado - Tengo el honor de invitar a V. E. a una entrevista personal entre nuestras líneas, el día y hora que V. E. señale. - Dios guarde a V. E. - Francisco S. López”
López was inviting Mitre to a meeting between both heads of estate. Mitre accepted, answering that he would go to the descbribed location at the head of an escort of 20 men, which he would then leave behind and approach himself alone. López proceeded in similar fashion.
After exchanging formalities, both men conferred for about 5 hours, without reaching a consensus. While López was prepared to make some concessions, the Allies were very clear in that López remaining in power was a deal breaker (and was, indeed, one of the clauses of the Treaty of the Triple Alliance). López would not budge, and the affair was fruitless. Both men exchanged gifts and parted ways in a calm manner.
Here is a drawing of the event, which came of to be known as the Interview of Yayayty Corá: www.revisionistas.com.ar/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Lopez.jpg

At 10:38, I believe it was Marshall Emilio Mallet who said the iconic phrase: "Let them come! From here they will not pass!" Since then, he turned into the maximum exponent and example of courage for Brazilian artillerymen, becoming the patron of Brazilian Army's artillery branch.
Interesting!
He was born in Dunkirk, France! Now that's interesting!
YES. Exactly. "Por aqui não passam!" ("They don´t pass through here")
Listening to the video gave me the impression that was Uruguayan artillery, a little bit early in the video, when should be Brazilian, far as I know. Or he was commanding Uruguayan and Brazilian troops?

Also this battle is one of many examples showing the importance of terrain being a deciding factor in a battle.
True, the allied position was in the open, so they didn't know where the enemy is coming from, yet, the Paraguayans were not able to coordinate and move fast.
I was a bit surprised that they met with unexpected resistance by the shrubbery. I mean, it was their country, shouldn't they kind of know how fast you could move through? Or was that a case of officers not being familiar with peasant life?
Thanks for posting this - The post Columbian history of S. America seems to be barely touched on

Really? I'd say Pecolumbian Latin america is far more underapperciated and less covered by most the general population, and most history textbooks, resources, and youtube channels; it's almost always just "Aztecs, Maya, Inca" and nothing else despite both Mesoamerica and the Andes having thousands of years of urban civilization
Yeah it reminds me of John Green's crash course takes on state creation in Latin American. Also Nail fergsun has an amazing comparison between George Washington and Simon bolivar.
Paraguayans are really fierce warriors... My great grandpa fought against them in the Chaco War, while a corporal in the 7th regiment of cavalry of Bolivia. He used to tell my father how the patrols' worst fear was to see the screaming "pilas" (called thus because most fought barefooted) coming out of the treeline with machete in hand without fear and still charging after being shot . it's a shame our 2 countries had to fight but there are so many heroic tales of both sides resulting of this war, it would be awesome if you would cover some battles of it.

I had to study this part of history when i was 13 yo. I remember going to the library, asking for a history book of this period and suddenly i got to the part when it says "90% of the male population of paraguay was killed", i literally read that 3 times, hoping that the words would say something different, i could not believe it and my kiddy brain struggled to understand the information. I closed the book, stood up, i wanted to ask someone in the library if they knew about this and why nobody talks about this on tv. I remember to ride my bike back to home feeling a heavy burden on me.
I had the same kinds of feelings when I read about this war when I was like 15. This war was just insane in scale of the devastation compared to the population of Paraguay. Has to be one of the most destructive wars int the world for any state.
Fun Fact: The Paraguayans fought was such ferocity and spirit it made the allies think they were fed alcohol mixed with gunpowder. Another fun fact that I found pretty dark and funny. After this battle allies commented on one Paraguayan soldier that was getting his leg amputated but seemed disinterested in the whole thing and just continued eating his biscuits.
It was great working on the script for this video. I love the history of this area and working with Kings and Generals is always a blast :D. If anyone wants to ask any questions about the battle feel free or if anyone wants to debate me on which country has better empanadas and dulce de leche I will gladly fight to the death over it.
- Cogito - hello!! Well the war didnt end in 1866, it ended in 1870, Tuyuti was for us the paraguayans the same as kursk was for the germans, never again we stood a chance in strategic offensive and after that we have a gruelling, atrittional warfare until we didnt have any more men left.
Yeah, it was an awful battle that essentially put a complete halt to Paraguayan offensives. The 1866 date is just in reference to the date of the battle. :)
Did they had any naval battles?
They did. Paraguay actually nearly managed to deal a huge blow to the Brasilian navy at the Battle of the Riachuelo. Paraguay used river boats as they had no coastline.
what happened to the Argentinian warships captured in Corrientes by the Paraguayan forces?
Great history video as a brazilian i would suggest also the naval battle of Riachuelo one of the greatest naval battles of South America History. Congrats for the video.
the greatest, by far
Will consider!
Riachuelo is the most decisive battle of that war. Paraguai should have give up after that.
@@KingsandGenerals A funny/interesting fact about Riachuelo is that the Brazilian admiral, wich I'm not sure who it was back that time, maybe Tamandaré or Barroso, totally transcribed Lord Horatio Nelson's own Trafalgar motivational signal and adressed his fleet in the eve of battle, with the very same signal! As a Brazilian, I'm surprised to see how impartial was your video, since the historiography of this war (Atleast the Latin American historiography) is shrouded in ideologic disputes amongst those who believe that the war was the result of the complete insanity of Lopez in attacking Brazil and Argentina and those who believe that the war was a merely defensive war against the terrible Brazilian imperialism.

As a Brazilian, there are two conflicts in Brazil I'd like to share with you:
War of Canudos - A conflict between the Old Brazilian Republic (1889 - 1930) and a "city-state" called Canudos, in northeastern Brazil. The city was actuallly an independent community founded by Antônio Conselheiro, a preacher who railied more than 30000 people behind him, preaching against poverty.
Farroupilha (Rugspunic) Revolution - A separatist civil war between the Brazilian Empire and the Riograndense Republic (present-day State of Rio Grande do Sul). The conflict involved the famous italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi - he even met his wife, Anita, during such conflict. Although the revolutionaries failed, such war left a great legacy for the state;

Late to the party, but the conflicts of this time period (US Civil War, Crimean War, Paraguayan War, Pacific War, Franco-Prussian War, and on up the the Boxer Rebellion and Russo-Japanese War) are criminally disregarded in military history circles.
People seem to think that nothing of note happened between Napoleon and WW1, but these conflicts show us the shift towards larger scale, mechanization, and "total war" of the 20th century.

Thanks for making a video about this war which is often forgotten even here in South America.
Greetings from Argentina 👍🏻
I had no idea about this war. Thanks for making this extremely educational video!
Thanks for watching!
thanks for running such an interesting and inspiring channel! it's great to hear about historical subjects that aren't mentioned as much in the US.
Thanks for watching :-)
Awesome video,very impartial,serious and direct,hugs from Brazil.
Thank you for your kind words!
I love that you touched on this battle. Love it, keep at it guys
We will, thank you!
I'm glad you guys made a video about the South American Wars. Great video, can't wait for more!
Thank you, there will be more :-)
Please, do the dutch conquests on northeast of Brazil and their expulsion. I'm so happy that you talked about the south American history. Thank you for the video!

Thank you very much! :-)
Thank you so much. A much needed addition.
Thanks for watching!
This was a really good one. I've seen other docs about this but loved your presentation. A+
Thank you!
Great to see South American history on the channel! Triple Alliance War is one of the major conflicts of the XIX century and yet it is quite unknown for those who are not from the region. I wasn't expecting to see it depicted with K&G's superb quality.
Thank you for watching!
I love how you jump from period to period from age to age. It is sad that some channels do one serie at a time and if you dont like that exact period you have to wait until it is finished and it took sometimes months. It is not your case. Big thump up.
Thank you very much! That is why releasing multiple videos per month is helpful. We can release one video for each of our series.
Once again you showed us something new. Great job!
Thank you very much for watching!
ual! what a happiness to see on the channel that i love and admire a content about my country and, moreover, about the region of Brazil where i live. thanks for the gift. this is a very important story for us.
Awesome Video!!! here in Argentina (aswell as in the whole region), there is a lot of discussions regarding the war and its motivs. We can all see that the Cassus Belli was Paraguay declaring war on us, and with the victory of the colorados, it was just a matter of time before Paraguay had a run for its money. Although some people say it was a defensive war from Paraguay, in order to stop Brazilian power. Nevertheless this discussions usually lead to nowhere, and the reality is that this war ravaged the region, and shaped it for years to come, destroying a prospeous nation like Paraguay in the process. Thank you for touching this theme and South America in General, it is nice to see that more people are getting interested in the history of my country and my continent, and allowing them to realize that history its not all about Rome or Napoleon. Saludos desde Argentina!!.
I didn't know this video exists! Thank you very much for making this battle and war more visible to all the world! Viva el Paraguay!

War of the Triple Alliance. Always remember my South American history studies at university. Glade for the course. Thanks for the video.
Another great video about a battle I never knew about. Keep up the amazing work you do here!
We will, thank you very much!
Great video! Kingsandgenrals as always :)
Thank you, my friend. :-)
Thank you for doing this war!! Its one of my favs
Thank you for watching, I hope you will share the video!

I'm a brazilian and I love our history. A information - the artillery who defeated the paraguayans attacks was brazilian artillery, comanded by Col. Emilio Mallet (today brazilian patreon of Artillery). He ordened yours soldiers make a dissimulate trench and the BRAVES paraguarians horsemen was stopped by it. The Col. Mallet spoke: "Wait ... wait ... the first ones are for the trench - it gave us a lot of work...". And when he gave the command of shot "Fuze to 6 seconds ... here they do not pass!"
As a Brazilian (retired) lieutenant, I honor the brave Paraguayan fighters who gave their lives for their homeland. STEEL!
It is amazing how I just only recently heard of this horrific conflict (the bloodiest in South American History) and it was not actually covered in South American History Class. It seems really important to remember this conflict, as it highlights the horrific suffering of warfare.

South American history. Cool. Can you do something on Simon Bolivar?
It is on the list!
Kings and Generals And on san martin and his legendary "cruce de los andes"?
1994fishcake no offence , but who is Simon Bolivar . His name actually sounds familiar to me .
Simón Bolívar was a Venezuelan military and political leader who helped most of Northern South America (and Panama) gain it's independence.
He is also the namesake for Bolivia
