He is in the service of the song, of what the song asks of him, and he delivers it gracefully, effortlessly, tastefully. You sense clearly, at times, that he was more than able to go beyond, to make himself more noticeable, but that simply is not his style. He never loses sight of his place within the band, as part of a whole.

Such an understated and subtle drummer, not attention getting by any stretch, but when you pay attention Ian is amazingly skilled. The feel he has is so fitting to Marillion, and that style is instantly recognisable. I've been lucky enough to see Marillion live and I was mesmerized by Ian, you really don't realise just how much is going on back there on the kit until you see it. All the marvelous live concert footage that exists doesn't show Ian nearly enough imho. I know he's shy and doesn't enjoy the cameras on him, but that man is a master on the kit and we should be allowed to marvel at him more.
Ian is so economic with movements it’s truly impressive, he is like a true jazz drummer. He also has the gift of having all the power and precision in his wrists, his timing is impeccable I’m surprised he uses a click. You can tell I’m a fan of his drumming 🙂
Well, AFAIK in the early 00s the marillos would use a visual sort of metronome hidden away which would flash in sync with the sequences and effects to sync with. Astoundingly, they made it work. When I tried that sort of thing myself (with a DIY midi flashing thingy) the drummer and the sequences would slowly but inevitably drift out of time even with a few retriggers.
Ian brought me sticks before a soundcheck on a convention in zeeland. My wife asked him as we randomly met him in the market hall, at that time i didn’t have a drum kit. Now i am playing marillion songs on my own kit with this sticks…thank you Ian! He took them out of a kind of sportsbag and at the beginning they smelled after his perfume. Won’t ever forget this….
My Hero, listen for example “Mad” from the album Brave the groove and drive is incredible, Ian is playing with air within the beats, that’s how I feel it. Best to you Ian from the Netherlands

Your live sound 1985 was one of the best I ever had the pleasure to hear, just outstanding to me. If Tama sucks regarding the endorsement: Sonos SQ2 might be a serious alternative, too.

Fully agree. I always like when they show him in the videos. And he always looks like he's really enjoying it.
Agree with everything except His timing is NOT impeccable at all. Have you ever heard him live? Races like crazy and comes out of fills too quickly.

The first time i heard his playing was in a band named Trace. The best drummer of all time. A trully master!!!!
