Yours, IMHO, are by far the best reactions to dearest Angelina; and this one is just sheer delight. Perhaps my favorite observation of yours is the ultra slowed down analysis of her vibrato between Bb and Db minor. UN-REAL! You really do augment viewers' understanding of what makes Angelina's vocal performances and choices so extraordinarily extraordinarily exceptional. It really is cool that she exists!

this is a fairytale ! she didnt wrigjt any music she wrote words (with effects, that is why the sound ingeneer was laughting reading it). She didn't know harmony (necessary to write arrangements) and she is a beginner in piano and guitar at around 12 ...
But she is a genius and the gratest female singer b y now anyway ! but no, she never wrote any music : even on her new songs, she wrote the words but not the music ...

I like that you pointed out that there is some bit of magic happening with her that goes well beyond the technique itself. Techniques can be taught and learned, but Angelina has something that I believe can't be learned. It is something that is happening organically from within her that just can't be replicated. It is this natural element that really draws me (and so many others) in when she sings. You forget that you are watching a "performance" and you just feel like you are sitting there with her as she expresses herself. She is the most engaging artist I personally have ever listened to.

Angelina Jordan was born in Jan 2006. She is currently 16 (barely 9 in this performance)
    - She began singing at the age of one and a half
    - At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through UA-cam videos and studied all greats from Jazz history.
    - When Angelina was 6, she was traveling and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. The girl complimented her on her pretty shoes, so Angelina took them off and gave them to the girl. She made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public she is barefoot. (that's a shortened version. the full story is more touching than the way I have told it here)
    - She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the show at just 8 years old.
    - In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the money, the 8 year old replied "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes"
    - The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. They do not want her to be thrust into stardom before she has a chance to grow up as a normal child, and finish her education. They allow her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that come in. I have heard they have turned down offers from many record labels and even disney.
    - Angelina has covered more than 80 songs over the last 5 years, everything ranging from old classics to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. (she can cover Amy winehouse and Lana del Rey like nobody else)
    - Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, and many more. All of which heard her doing covers of their songs and were blown away.
    - Angelina has written three of her own original songs (at 12 years old): "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing)
In summary, Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived. This is just my opinion, but if you listen closely to any of her stuff you will hear the greatness. She sings with a natural style. There is no acting, no showing off, there are no unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of saying "hey look at me sing". She once said "when I sing I go into a magical world in my head", and you can hear the results of that. When Angelina sings it is pure soul, pure emotion, pure music.

I have loved seeing this many many times and still enjoying her complexity and delight. And you .. oh Fairy Voice Mother .. enjoying it all fully and with great knowledge. Joy. I recommend that you see My Funny Valentine, which is her latest full video .. and I think you would love seeing her do the song when she was a wee one ( deliciously innocent and so very smart) and then seeing what she does at 16. Her. Voice. Is. Exquisite. You will love, love, love it. Someone recommended for the recent one that you close your eyes the first time you hear it and then hear it again with your eyes open. I did that last time I watched them both and it was an inspired idea .. eyes closed really really allows me, you. us to truly hear her magnificent choices. Gorgeous. And it is the most recent of all of the videos ... except, of course, her tiktok and Instagram delights she sends us here and there. There is a video collection named SHE WAS BORN FOR THIS!! and it truly blows one''s mind. Listening to her go from one song to another with that amazing voice that she changes at will to be equally magnificent though very different. She tapes all these with her cell phone and it is all raw and gorgeous. There are many walking the streets of Santa MOnica and the beach holding her phone in front of her as she walks and sings .. oh .. so magnificently! There has been piano added to some or these just lately but it doesn't take away from the rawness and truth she sings with. The best thing about this video is that it is 30-some blessed minutes of Angelina. Extraordinary. Magnificent. Magical. Unique.
I very much look forward to seeing you react to her again. Hope it's soon.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based after listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight on how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. What you don’t know yet because you’ve seen so little of Angelina is that she inhabits many different genres as effortlessly and authentically as she did here. Her timing is immaculate, as you saw today, and her amazing arrangements are uniquely hers because - because who could cover that?
I’ve been following Angelina-actually captivated and addicted-for about five years. I’ve actively listened to music all my 70+ years. No one comes close to Angelina. She is spectacularly good. Most Angelina fans never have a favorite song because the territory she covers is so wide and deep that you can’t compare her songs. There is a cloud of thirty or forty that comprise my favorites. Want to see what Angelina can do? Try her jaw dropping cover of Michael’s Billie Jean. Or her unbelievable cover of I’d Rather Go Blind to hear completely different voices and genres than you’ve heard before. Or try some of her originals, like Million Miles or Seventh Heaven. The girl with a thousand voices is truly once in a lifetime good.

Very well said. I'm 59 and I've never encountered a vocal talent like Angelina. She is indeed a musical genius, and this is from someone who thinks the label "genius" is far overused and I have never before described any singer as a musical genius.

Oops! I watched and listened to this reaction on the day you posted it but did not comment, as I scuttled over to watch and listen to your reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody again. 🙂What can an old man say. Only echo what so many have commented below. You are the very best Reactor, for you bring to the table not only an incredible knowledge of how the voice works, but explain it in a way that even I can understand. As if this wasn't enough, you bring with it a wonderful personality and sense of humour. And thank you for drawing my attention to the smile on the face of the Bass player. The only downside is that you don't react often enough to Angelina. Is it because you are concerned that there will be too many "Belgian chocolates" if you do more? 🙂
As you understood, it is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and she based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
    (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
    (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
    (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
    (d) The occasions where Angelina gave silent instructions to the band
    (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
    (f) The instant transformation for "permanence" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I remark on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
You have seen in the comments that Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The chameleon of Song" for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the colour of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Greetings from Scotland! Yes "Exquisite!" At the beginning AJ decided on some changes to the music score so she noted this and gave it to the musical director who just smiles, nods and does what she says - at 9yo! Only AJ could do that! She never sang this in this very aggressive style again because of the damage it would possibly do to her voice! Just a one time full on tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins and his crazy style! Loved the analysis, but loved your pure joy reaction even more!
Watching her video "My Funny Valentine" now that she's 16yo, so tall, so beautiful and with a very distinctive style is a world away from this! Truly one hell of a talented young lady!

Thanks for a fantastic analysis. Since I first saw this yesrs ago when it was published on UA-cam I have considered this as some of the most magic 4 minute of the music history. So grateful that you were able to explain in detail what's so special about it, her technique and the musical intelligence she uses.
That she has an unique musical intelligence is absolutely certain, I attended a concert some years ago where one of the musicians really messed up the song and the rythm. All other singers (of any age), would have just given up, but Angelina in a couple of milliseconds just improvised, made a couple of humming notes, and brought the song back in rythm and structure. That was insane to witness.

Unbelievable reaction! The best reaction to Angelina I have ever seen I think. I haven''t seen you since you lost it last time, but I'm planning on changing that, as I have now subscribed. The easiest sub that I can recall. One video a week ????????? Are you kidding me ??? You just CAN'T let Angelina slip by, you need to react to HER once a week. Do that and I'm an as happy camper as can be. Not even kidding :-)
NOW! If you want to hear and watch the most recent Angelina video (It is an absolute MUST WATCH), you have to react to her new rendition of "My Funny Valentine", which she dropped on Valentine's Day a month ago. I think that is her most beautiful performance to date, and so do most of her fans. When I say her NEW rendition, it's based on the fact that she also released a rendition of the song when she was 10 years old. The two renditions are almost down to the date 6 years apart. Both are stunningly beautiful. While I'm at it, I'll give you links for both renditons.
Just note that Angelina is currently 16 years old, as of January 10th. She stands 6'1 (1m 85 cm) tall and could probably easily become a model if she so wanted. She is becoming an incredibly beautiful, young woman for sure. LINKS:

  • @ronraskind

Thank you for your enthusiastic reaction to Angelina. Your response was not surprising!
Norwegian born Angelina began singing at the age of one and a half, and by age three was listening to jazz and classics legends on repeat. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of only 8, singing old time classics from Billie Holliday and George Gershwin, and became the youngest ever winner of an international Got Talent Show! She also went viral on America's Got Talent the champions in 2020 with her unique version of Bohemian Rhapsody. She is a true prodigy.
She is now 16, and has recorded over 160 songs, including mostly covers and several originals. A major attraction to Angelina's music is the emotion and attitude she conveys, although she has not experienced the life events! She is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices as she can adjust her tone, style, and register for any song or genre. She was signed by Republic Records over a year ago. Here is link from ages 6 to 15 to her chronological performances, including five originals.
    m.ua-cam.com/play/PL2v8kgVeo4EbYDVnRwObjETfWpXbzbgIO.html
    Why does Angelina sing barefoot?
When she was 6 years old, she was in the Middle East with her mom and grandmother and they came across a young orphan girl with no shoes and scarred feet. Angelina gave the girl her own shoes and has forever performed barefoot as a reminder of all those less fortunate. At age 9 she wrote a book about this experience, Between two Hearts, becoming the youngest ever published author in Norway. She also has helped raise millions for children's charities. She is a special individual, and one you cannot follow without developing an emotional bond.
Angelina penetrates hearts because she is humble and has compassion for humanity. Her stated goal from childhood was to sing for the world and spread love and peace. I trust this will cause you to embrace her as millions of others have, and that you will continue down the rabbit hole from which you would not want to escape. Peace.

What a great reaction. Now that she's totally enticed your senses, would you please react to Angelina's first time in a studio at the age of 6. She covers I Who Have Nothing. I believe this may have also been when she first started arranging her own music. Even at such a young age, she literally blows my mind. This 70 yr old grandmother is addicted to listening to this amazing young lady. I've been watching her for 10+yrs and could never tire of her unique voice. I usually don't like so many interruptions during reactions. But you are a true Angel and obviously very knowledgeable in this field. And even though I'm not, you made it easier for me to understand. This is the best and most informative reaction to this song that I have seen! She has so many more for you to see yet, but if you really want to see where she first started, you need to see her do Gloomy Sunday on Norway's got talent when she was just 7 years old. Gloomy Sunday was her first audition, followed by an acapella version of I'm a fool to want you and an amazing version of bang bang before winning the show with Summertime. She turned 8 during this show and you can really see so much development since then, but it is truly remarkable that a 7 year old has the ability to sing any of these songs at all, but to sing them with so much emotion and incredible style at such an age is just pure magic. I have never believed in past lives, but she has me thinking that I was wrong about that because she is an old soul who MUST have been here before!

A common reaction to AJ performances from ages 6-12 is: 'I don't think she understands how good she really is ...' What is going on behind those fiercely intelligent eyes when she is singing remains an eternal mystery to me, but you've managed to raise the curtain just a little with this fabulous review of what I and many other fans believe is her stand-out pre-teen performance ... the one that will be revisited in years to come for documentary biog films and that will occupy a whole chapter in books about her rise to fame. There was a huge growth between her first auditions (Gloomy Sunday - Billie Halliday, and I'm a fool to want you (acapella) when she was 7, vs her final song at age 8 (Summertime) when her English was incredibly improved and her front tooth was almost completely grown!
In terms of her latest, it's a tough choice. "Million Miles" is her own song dedicated to her grandpa who had recently passed (amazing songwriter too!). Her absolute latest is "My funny valentine". I don't know how one would pick from them!

Thank you for explaining how Angelina is able to sing like she does. I am moved every time I hear her sing. She packs so much emotion in it that I cannot help but react. I know her ability is a gift from God but your analysis helps me to understand the techniques she uses.

She's doing all the arrangements herself, she's the boss. She won a talent competition at the age of 7.

Love Angelina and all she does. I have to say here, I am in love with how you break down the vocal performance and explaine the techniques of the voice. I find it so interesting in how the articulation of the mouth and mechanical use of the voice box to produce amazing sounds. Just love you! So as always stay safe my dear and much love you you and yours.

Absolutely brilliant comment/analysis, I already thought your previous one stood out as the best to that song. I am also intrigued by your facial expressions during the song, it feels as you are deeply feeling the music. I am sure all of us here would agree that Angelina is exceptional, a genius, none of us have witnessed anything like it in 50 years. Recently I was intrigued by "I am still holding out for you", when she was 10, but there are so many other songs. My "Funny Valentine" when she just turned 16 is also a good example how she developed (although I don't really like the song itself...). Please come back to Angelina, she is worth your time !!

Yeah! I know what you mean. In my case, I have never heard any singer as good and versatile as Angelina in more than 70 years. 🙂
