    ℹ️ About this Video:
    Before buying our motorhome, we knew we wanted to hire a professional RV inspector to thoroughly check the RV to ensure it was mechanically sound and had no major issues that would prevent us from buying it. We found a local inspector through Premier RV Inspections, who tested and drove the RV and gave us a detailed report so we could compile a list of "fixits". Being armed with this report helped us negotiate an even better deal on our RV, making it money very well spent.

    I am only a couple of months into my research as I embark on this process of purchasing an RV, but I have watched/listened to hundreds of videos while I clean, take care of business, drive, etc. THIS is the BEST video I have seen yet, it's helped me understand that no matter how much I fall in love with a rig, I will need a professional to check it out for me first, and I'll budget appropriately. Thanks for this awesome video, I'll be subscribing and going back through your archives.

    Because you recommended them in your RV Success School, we also used Premier RV Inspections for our pre-purchase inspection in January 2018 as part of a plan to also use Wholesale Warranties for our extended maintenance agreement. Like you, we had already put down a deposit on our coach subject to results of a professional pre-purchase inspection acceptable to us. The dealership did not have an issue with that.
    Because we purchased some distance from home, we were not able to be present for the inspection. The dealership provided someone to drive the coach for the inspector and provided water and shore power. We received the detailed inspection report by email and received a voice call from the inspector to go over it.
    The inspection gave us great peace of mind that anything wrong with the coach before it left the lot was for the dealership to address and everything after it left the lot was for the warranty company to cover.
    The inspector missed a leak between the rear toilet and the black tank that we only found by staying in the coach overnight at the dealership prior to accepting it. So, while inspections are good, living in the coach even a little before you roll away is something we recommend based on our experience. (The dealership encouraged this as well, providing water, power and a dump station.) Ask if you can do this!
    Since our purchase, we have already had our dash A/C and our power awning fail.
    Both were covered by our extended maintenance agreement.
    We can't recommend them enough.
    It's the nature of RV's that things are going to break.

    Enjoyed the video. I'm looking at 10-20 year old diesels with a reasonable amount of miles. In my 40-years experience as a military and airline pilot, airplanes that don't fly break, and I'm sure that RVs that aren't driven have similar problems, except maybe not flaming out over the Indian Ocean. But breaking down in rush hour traffic on the George Washington Bridge would be just as bad. I'll definitely use a certified inspector. Almost every ad I read for used RVs claim they're perfect, spotless, flawless, professionally maintained, and so forth, and I know that some of that is bovine scatology. Great work on a very useful segment.

    I was thinking of becoming an RV inspector until I was in a motorcycle wreck in 2012 that has left me with a left leg and foot that don't work right no more. Along with massive nerve damage and chronic pain 24/7... There's no way I could get up and inspect the roof for leaks and or damage... But it's still on my bucket list of things I'd love to do... But all in God's time to heal me and HIS will.. Y'all be blessed... BBE..

    Have a coach RV inspection done and you are only half way there! Finding a seller who’s willing to let you have the other half done may be difficult. However, avoiding the risk of VERY expensive repairs means having a MECHANICAL inspection done. This is especially true on an older diesel coach! What’s UNDER any coach can cost way more to repair than ANY coach house item! This is where the coach is put on a lift and a mechanic (NOT of the sellers choosing or from the selling dealership) checks for leaks, looks at air brake rotors and pad conditions, does a complete engine inspection, looks at suspension condition including ball joints, boots, air bags and shocks, looks for transmission leaks, differential leaks, exhaust leaks & condition, checks wheel seals and wheel bearing condition, inspects the air suspension including air bags and inspects for air leaks (Sonic Leak Detector), PLUS lots I’m sure I’ve left out... If the engine has a codes history that’s also pulled and it can reveal info on how the coach was driven/maintained. Older coaches won’t have this, of course. Lastly, an oil analysis should be done and sent off to a lab like Blackstone Labs (only $28). When dealing, make any agreement contingent on passing all of the above inspections and also the return of a satisfactory engine oil analysis report...
    Additional:
    Get a 4 corner weigh - such as one done at Escapee Parks
    Slightly wider tires maybe ok, but they should be run at recommended pressure for the weight they are carrying (see above)
    No mention of tire DOT date codes. RV tires typically age out out long before they mile out
    Didn’t see your RV inspector do a Leveling jack test or inspect for leaks?
    Didn’t see an air brake test. It might have hydraulic brakes?
    Didn’t see a roof inspection. It may need a reseal or caulking
    Didn’t see inspections of all awnings (especially important for power ones). On a ‘99 the material can easily be sun damaged
    Best to change out all fluids, filters, belts & radiator hoses regardless of condition to give you a baseline for your regular maintenance plan. Don’t forget that PowerTech generator (I’ve got an older 12K PT with a Kabota - awesome unit!)
    Aftermarket mechanical warranties on older coaches can be super expensive, if you can find one. Hopefully, you will luck out purchasing WITHOUT all of the above. I hope so! But do get on those new baseline items...

      @Rvlove  5 років тому

      Thank you for sharing all this extra detail. Yes, it would be great to have all of these items inspected. We didn't have all of it checked before purchase, but many of the items you mention above were actually checked during this inspecition. We were just trying to provide a high level overview in this video, and we have done some of additional checks in the few months that followed. Still have not done everything on your list above, but feeling very good about our purchase. Thanks again for sharing.

    Hi, been watching you two for a long while now. This is my first comment. I really enjoyed this video. My husband and I bought a 2006 DP this year. We did not have a pre-inspection and I just want to say, to anyone buying out there, get the inspection. We had to be back to work so we were in a hurry and a long way from home. We believed our dealer that everything worked. Some things did not work and we are trying to educate ourselves to get everything working as it should. Thankfully the motor and drive train are sound!! We love the upside to these solid old coaches so much, it's the way we are going to go when moving up from a 29' toy hauler. As I've been researching CC's, I'm finding that creeping seals on the side glass is very common. I'm hoping you can share any experience with this on a future episode.

    Wish we had known there was such a thing as an RV inspector before we bought our new-to-us 2004 Holiday Rambler in June, 2018. It's a lovely coach, but there are a couple of things that an inspection would have found. The dash a/c barely works, however the two roof a/c's will freeze you out! The tank sensors don't work. There was a blockage in the black tank, that I would guess was from improper maintenance. Other than that, it has been a nice change from our smaller class C.

    I would like to ask a question three questions to you and the audience:
    1- How long before the tires on a class A have to be replaced (in terms of time, not miles)
    2- How long will a very well kept class A motorhome last?
    3- Can the electronics or dash features on an older class A motorhome (by the pilot seat) be upgraded (example larger screen for a better back-up camera). I have come to the realization that when you purchase a 2009 coach, you will not be getting 2020 electronics or features.

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  3 роки тому

      My comments below are related to Class A diesel pusher coaches. Class A gas coaches are lighter weight builds, and would not have the longevity of a big diesel. But could still last quite a while if well cared for.
      It is generally recommended that Class A motorhome tires are replaced after 5 years regardless of miles travelled. If the tires have been protected against UV rays, never 'curbed' or damaged, and inspected you can run them a couple extra years in some cases. If you have a large tag axle coach, you might consider using the 5-7 year old tires on your tag axle while replacing the rest, but most would recommend replacing all 8. A well kept Class A motorhome can easily last 20 years, probably much longer. Yes, you can do some aftermarket upgrades for better back up and side view cameras. But there are of course some limitations. It is a widely supported opinion that coaches built before 2009 are superior in many ways to newer coaches, so they are well worth considering. -M

    Wish I had done an inspection. My 1999 Country Coach Intrigue had several issues that would have shown up in an inspection. Finding the issues and repairing them on my own has given me invaluable information and training. Hope your coach is as much fun as ours. What inverter did you choose for the replacement? We chose a Xantrex Freedom 2012. I also upgraded the AC units and Thermostat to heatpumps, 15K in the front and 13.5 in the rear. I was amazed how easily all this was to replace on my own.

      Congratulations on your nearly exact coach to ours. Inspections are great and as you said, could have found issues for you in advance. But we love your positive spin on making the repairs and upgrades. We have loved learning as we make updates and repairs on ours as well. We chose a Victron inverter. Looking forward to sharing more on our electrical system upgrades in a dedicated video.

    We found an inspector through premier, but I’m afraid our experience was not as good as yours. There things we specifically asked the inspector to look for - like washer dryer connections - and the inspector said there weren’t any ( which there definitely are!!). Also the inspector said the couch needed new shocks so we took the motorhome to get new shocks as soon as we purchased it and they said it didn’t need new shocks.
    There were other little things as well, which makes us question everything he said :/

    • @elisaboyd5779
      @elisaboyd5779 5 років тому +2

      We felt like we needed an inspection because the rv was in tulsa and we were in texas. We needed to know if it was in good working order before flying out. So the good part is he gave us the confidence to make the trip. Had he been totally accurate we might not have bought our motorhome 😂. The alternative was an 1100.00 inspector through NRVIA - which we didn’t feel we could afford at the time, but had we used him we would have had a 40-50 page report telling us the good, the bad and the ugly. Live and learn.

    I use a NIRVA certified Level 2 inspector. Go to nrvia.org/locate/ to find one. You should have a diagnostic test done on transmission and motor oil, coolant, and generator oil on a used motorhome. I recommend having new ones inspected also. After all, I wouldn't spend that much on a new home without an inspection. Don't believe in extended warranties.

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  5 років тому

      Thanks for sharing. Agreed that fluid analysis is a good idea if you have access to that testing and especially at high purchase prices. Extended warranties are not for everyone, but are great for many people, especially those who are not very capable of doing their own repairs. They can pay for themselves quickly. Almost every person we know that has an extended warranty has received more in paid services/repairs than they paid for the warranty.

    Second
    One thing to add, with the change in tire size the previous owner did, the might have changed the spacing between the dual wheels... there is an online calculator for that, but I did not copy down the sizes stated in the video... so here is some homework for someone else. Call me lazy.
    Lazy mode off.
    OK I went back to 5:54 in the video and they inspector states the tire sizes were 295 75R on it and the original tire size was 275 70R so that closes up the gap by 20mm but that size does not account for tire bulge with the weight of the coach. they may have pumped them up to the Tires maximum pressure to minimize the bulge. I assume you did not look at the gap between the dual tires before you replaced them......
    I also note that the tires were "regoveable" visible on the sidewall in the video at 6:55. they were probably regroved tires that were purchased at a discount. you would have had to inspect the tires to see if they were regoved or retreaded. they would have had to melt a mark into the sidewall when it was done. Also in the video he did not state the build date on the tires. was that in your report?

    My wife and I really enjoy all your videos and we really like your CC. We are in the market for a older Class A ourselves. What are your thoughts on the CAPS fuel system on that model Cummins? I have read some negative reviews of it, but nothing bad enough to keep me from purchasing one with it myself as most of the coaches from that era have it. Keep up the great videos and happy travels.

      Thank you for your kind words. Glad you enjoy our content so much. The powerplant has been great for the most part. The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't like cold weather starts. I confirmed with the tech at the Cummins shop that it is a common issue with these engines. But, we do have an engine block heater, so I just plug that in if I am going to need to start the engine in cold weather.

    • @Rvlove

      We didn't capture everything on video, but yes, the rooftop was inspected. This coach has a fiberglass roof. There were a couple spots that needed some fresh dicor, and some hairline cracks that are mostly cosmetic but none that were so bad that they would leak.

    Great video and it certainly helped that you were MH owners before and knew what questions to ask ahead of time. We purchased a 2003 Newmar DSDP just 4 months ago and prior to purchase hired a level 2 NRVIA inspector due to the distance between us and where the coach was just south of Cleveland. The major fail was that the inspector did not physically go on the roof but had lots of remarks and photos about the roof in the inspection. The fail was found after the purchase when I climbed on the roof to do some resealing that I found a large soft spot around the rear A/C unit and that we had started to have leaking in the kitchen area. That was a learning experience and all I would say is that inspections are necessary but also ask detailed questions ahead of time and afterwards of the inspector. Bottom line we had to replace the roof.. $$$$$$$ :(

    I know an inspection from an individual is important. Should you also get your own inspection if you’re buying used from a dealership no matter the size or reputation of the dealership?

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  5 років тому +1

      We don't think it is that black and white. If the dealer has a great reputation, the unit is relatively new, and you have a multiple hour, or multiple day walk through experience, a 3rd party inspection might not be needed. But for the most part, it is probably a good idea to have an inspection done even if purchasing from a dealer.

    How many miles did your coach have when you bought it and how much were you able to negotiate it down after the inspection?

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  3 роки тому

      This coach had 170K miles on it when we bought it, and we were able to purchase for $25K after the inspection. They were asking $35K, so that is a substantial percentage off. That said... I would not set your expectation on being able to buy a similar coach for that price. We had a bit of a 'perfect storm' situation of being very educated buyers, the right time of year, market conditions, and unique features on the coach that not everyone would like, and of course the high miles. We knew we were going to do a major remodel on it too. I am trying to purchase a motorhome in Colorado Springs, CO and I live in Wisconsin. Really interested in this 29' Bigfoot but it is a 2005 and I told them I would purchase it but wanted a local inspector in Colorado Springs to inspect it before purchase. They were going on their last trip to Utah and wanted me to put down a "sizeable" deposit and wait until they got back from vacation. I told them to go ahead and take their trip and I would contact them (per the seller) on 10/12. Was I wrong not to send them the deposit? I just felt a bit off about waiting two weeks to get things rolling. I will need to fly out there to pick it up but feel odd also about not walking through it before a deposit also... My first purchase and a bit nervous about the proper etiquette Thanks love your videos

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  5 років тому +1

      Congratulations on being close to your first purchase. I understand your caution about putting a deposit down without seeing it at all. But, I assume you have at least seen quite a few pictures. Curious if they are wanting a non-refundable deposit. I know many people selling privately (ourselves included) that like having a deposit from potential buyers to show intent but would absolutely refund their deposit if the sale didn't go through for ANY reason. I think it is perfectly reasonable to wait on sending the deposit until they return from their trip. I also think it is a very good sign that they are taking it out on a trip right now as that is a good sign that everything is in working order, and is being used, rather than just sitting in storage somewhere.

    The Inspection was merely okay but not thourogh. I do not think that enough time was spent analyzing the most costly parts of an RV which includes the engine, tranny, rust on chassis, suspension, steering, air system and brakes. Most of the items that were inspected were minor and could easily be done by someone handy(Marc) and having an RV check list that you can get free from the internet. If the inspection results significantly helped with sales negotiations, then it was a worthwhile tool for that purpose.

      We had price quotes for extended warranties on many RVs during our shopping process. They ranged from $5,000 to $17,000 depending on the coverage, term and RV asking to cover. I have questions: Did the inspection happen at the dealership? Did you have to get permission from the dealership? Did the dealership already know you were interested in this coach? Was there any pressure from dealership to not get an inspection? Did someone from the dealership go on the test drive with you? How long did it take to get someone out there to do inspection? (I think you said, but didn't hear) Were you worried someone would buy the rig while you were waiting for an inspection? Have you ever done or know someone who asked for an inspection on a RV sold privately? There might be other questions, but you see my angle? To actually tell someone 'wait I want an inspection' is stressful to me. Thanks for any answers you can give me.….. The guy walking through the video at the end just wanted his 15 mins of fame. He was cute!

    • @Rvlove
      @Rvlove  5 років тому +2

      Hello Diane. Thank you for your questions. Yes, the inspection did happen at a dealership facility. We did get permission from the dealership and they did know that we were interested in the coach. In fact, we had put down a fully refundable deposit on the coach before scheduling the inspection. Which is also why we were not at all concerned about them selling it out from under us. From our discussions with RV dealers, it is not at all uncommon for an RV sale to take weeks to complete because of financing or other delays, so it was not a big deal at all to delay the sale by a few days (three if I remember correctly) for the inspection. There was no hint of pressure for us to not get an inspection, and nobody from the dealership went with us on the test drive. That might have been different if it was a different price point, and some dealerships may have different policies in place around the test drive portion. The dealer did go with me on my first test drive, but not with the inspector. Yes, we have met many people who have had professional inspections done on private party sales, and I would guess that private party inspections are actually far more common than having it inspected at a dealership. Sorry to hear that it seems stressful to you. Curious why it is stressful to you. It is actually pretty common to have inspections done, and is a great way to reduce your stress in the purchase process by giving you confidence in what you are buying. Yep... the guy at the end is quite the crack up, and he did end up with a little extra spotlight time.

      When we were shopping, anytime I addressed questions to a private seller, I told them in advance that we would make any offer subject to acceptable results of an inspection. Some aren’t going to be happy about that, some will be fine.
      It protects the seller too, since you can’t really complain after the deal that there were hidden problems. So you might approach it along those lines.
