    I think I would still blow the tops off prior to closing the slide, when possible, to try to minimize the chance of small items from getting in.
    Thanks again for all the videos!!

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому +3

      Thanks! Yes, you certainly could still blow off the slides and it would be a lot easier without the flanges on there now. But, I haven't since we got them and they're clean every time! 👍

    Hey Aaron & Chris! Excellent overview of the True Topper. After 20 years with 3 traditional slide toppers on our motorhome, our biggest issue has always been the fact that they're mounted LEVEL, which allows water to pool. We upgraded the fabric to the FAR superior Tough Top Awnings material, which virtually eliminates flapping in the wind. But that still doesn't change the fact that they're mounted level, so water still pools, which we hate. We're planning the same True Topper upgrade when we get our new rig, so it's great to hear you're having a good experience. See ya on the road! 😄

    • @IreneIronTravels

      Hey guys! Good to hear from you and hope all is well since we last talked! We've heard the Tough Top Awning material is really great and I'm excited for you guys to get your new rig and try out the True Toppers. You'll love them....such a simple, robust, clean, and innovative product. I knew we had to have them when we were ordering our 5th wheel. Hope to see you guys sooner than later! 😊

    WOW this company is about to get really rich - once the RV manufactures see this, they are going to want them on ALL of their RVs with slide outs - This company needs to reach out to the RV manufacturers and sell them to them ASAP I hope this company has patents for it - As a mechanical engineer for over 35 years I think these toppers are quite ingenious - safe travels Lance

    • @IreneIronTravels

      Agreed! These were on factory Tiffin motorhomes before THOR bought them out. As soon as one picks them up...others will follow! 👍

      No, they won’t. Rv manufacturers are all about saving money and cutting cost in the end. Also they will have to modify the lips on the slides. Don’t hold your breath.

  • @tracymeskel2839

    I love it. I’m from the PNW, and could use them. I’m going to look into these.
    When you say it’s like it never quits raining in Oregon. You’re right. If you want to check your RV for water intrusion, just take it to the PNW.
    A joke we would tell is ;
    “People in Oregon don’t tan……They Rust.” 😂
    Or;
    375 people fell off their bikes, in Portland,……and Drowned. 😖😖

    I modified my three slide toppers to have a longitudinal slope as well as a higher athwart slope. Then the spring is set to maximum tension for the slide travel. No pooling no flapping. That system is very nice, but way beyond my budget. A new complete slide topper for one of my slides cost me $305 delivered. I do all work on my trailer myself.

    • @rigsnrvs
      @rigsnrvs 5 місяців тому

      Can you send me pictures of your modified topper? That sounds like a helpful project I might need to do.

    • @BigTruckRVLife
      @BigTruckRVLife 5 місяців тому +1

      I agree 100% about the cost. A lot of us retired full time RV’ers can’t afford items like this. I also do my own work and maintenance. I keep my slider roofs extremely clean and keep the rubbers seals treated. I also remove and replace the caulk bead along the inner aluminum strip every two years. If I’m near trees I keep the roof blown off. Maintenance of the entire camper is the key to happy full time RVing!! ✌️

    My issue with slide toppers is the wind and also the rain pooling on the topper. Have actually pulled slides in while at the beach because of the wind whipping them. Visited with their sales rep at the FMCA rally in Perry GA back in March and very impressed. Glad to see the video on the actual installation.

  • @danrambow7721

    Looks like a pretty good system. On our Class A, we have three slides, small, large and largest. The small would work with this system, the two larger slides have a locking system that projects up through the slide roof that locks the whole slide in place for travel. So that would not work with this system. Regarding noise, it was terrible on the two larger slides during any sort of windstorm. At about our 6-year point, the topper material was stretched and ripping. we went with Tough Tops out of Vancouver WA, for new custom-made toppers for our RV. We sent them the measurements, and they sent us custom cut toppers for each slide. Following their video instructions, this 70-year-old installed them, himself. Nice material, great quality, selection of colors, and . . . very quiet in windstorms. Still going strong after 7 more years, I chose the medium gray color which does seem to help reduce temperatures in the AZ sun.

    Nicely done. I'm glad to see you got these. I've been curious about those after hearing about them a couple years ago. I imagine keeping them clean from dirt and pollen will help the seals. Gonna have to wash the rig with the slides out 😊

    Looks like a great product. I had to remove all 3 toppers from my class a because they malfunctioned. I’m going to look into this as a solution. These videos frustrate me though because I don’t understand why the RV manufacturers aren’t coming up with these solutions. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars yet they keep producing the same thing over and over despite knowing it’s a problem area. Thanks for the video.

    This is excellent. Such a smart idea.
    We switched to a slide free coach for many reasons, wind noise being high on the list! We had a (2021 built, non-full time use) slide topper bolt sheer off while we were in YELL last summer. We were glad to have a ladder, and all the right tools, on board so we could remove the whole assembly. What a pain. And LCI doesn’t warranty them for long enough while using cheap components. :(
    These guys are doing it right!

    Nice. Concern that I have is that the sacrificial slide topper material actually does protect the top of the slide. Now having no material covering the slide, the slide is actually now fully exposed to direct rain, debris and the sun. Looks nice though. I’ve had my RV for 4yrs, my slide is 16ft long. I just changed my seals and slide topper material after it was worn and there was some minor water intrusion. Took me about 2hrs to change and cost about $400 of course I did it myself. The dealers wanted $1400. This system looks really nice best of luck, nice video..

    We recently rented a fifth wheel that had fabric slide toppers. During my inspection I didn't notice that one of the toppers didn't roll back up correctly (but the owner's pictures showed that one of the toppers didn't look right). Upon arriving at our camping destination, as I was opening the slide I heard a loud bang and the whole slide sort of bumped and bounced. The topper had become tangled and stopped opening which caused a big stress on the top of the slide. The topper ended up being ripped from the side of the camper and the slide didn't open up all the way after that. This wasn't my rig and it was damaged because of the slide topper. We were able to remove the fabric and close the slide completely so we were able to get it home, but since it was in my possession, it cost me my $1500 deductible. Thanks for showing this better way so I don't have to worry about toppers again as I buy my own fifth wheel.

    Wow. Great Video! First time seeing this on a 4th Wheel. We have a 2008 Tiffin Allegro Bus and have considered this option. I was quoted around $4.5k for the install. Replacement slide toppers run me around $800 every 3 or 4 years. All things being equal, the True Toppers are actually superior to the slide toppers.
    Just a note - Tiffin is not installing these on all their motorhomes. From what I understand, only the Breeze and Zephyr had these installed. I had heard that Tiffin was going to start putting this system on the Allegro Buses but pulled the plug on that after the RV market tanked.

    Two concerns I see right away with this new system. First, our living slide has 2 slight bubble skylights. So the sweeping action wouldn’t work very well traveling across those humps. Secondly, the true topper you showed at the beginning of this video was not removing the pine needles. Hardly at all. But the fact this new topper does provide an amazing water protection both while open and closed along the top of the slide. That being said, I think I’d rather deal with the skylights and have the added water protection this new system provides. How ingenious. And no more wind issues.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому +1

      Ah yes the skylights would be an issue. Thats interesting to have them in the slide like that...cool! The clip in the beginning with the pine needles is the same clip at the end with the pine needles. I showed the top of the inside slide right after the outside shot and 99% of the pine needles gone! 👍 Its really swept everything so far!

    I think a slide topper that could be detached easily when winds are high would be best for the conventional types. This is a good idea, the only issue I noticed was the debris piling up on the top of the awnings and the cost.

  • @stanmarion550
    @stanmarion550 5 місяців тому

    That is a very good solution to the #1 slide issue.
    Question, when the slide is in, is there a latch that holds it down, or is it just spring tension, can you lift it with your hand?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому

      It is just that spring lock I show in the video. It's a pretty simple design and as the slide closes the topper is held by the back of the slide flange and spring lock. You can not lift the toppers when the slide is in. But when in the out position, you can lift the topper up to clean under or inspect. 👍 It's a crazy simple design.

    Our trailer has just one small slide. I'll stick with no topper of either type and just sweep prior to running the slide in. I am going to improve my stock slide with some eternabond tape. My stock slide seal tape puckered in a few spots and I'm sure it is still sealing but I do not like the looks of it over time. I do like the product you reviewed and thank you for covering it. Nice job. Take care.

    We are on our 3rd 5th wheel and the two previous trailers came with slide toppers which we hated. We live in NE Kansas and have a ton of wind here, sometimes well over 50mph. Those toppers were so noisy on both of the previous RV's, and would keep us up at night during higher winds. They even caused the slides to move around more as they would catch the wind. Our last trailer with them suffered failures on both the fabric and it ripped about 12" long on one of them. It failed two years into owning it. I just checked and they have a dealer/installer in Topeka, KS, which is about 1 hour from us, so I just reached out to them.

    First off, very well documented and articulated installation. My question revolves around the material being pushed off the top of the slide and into the trough created by the awning and side of the slide. Does traveling at highway speed create enough airflow in that area to blow the material out? Love the product and will definitely look into it if/when we change out our fifth wheel.

    • @SpartanTrek

      Thank you! Yes, that is an unfortunate " natural catch " created by the awning. If we're parked under falling leaves they will fall in there also and add to the build up. But, yes so far traveling has blown the leaves out of there. Or if it's a lot of fallen leaves I'll just unroll the awning before we travel to get them out. You could also blow them out or use a garden hose.

    I was very impressed with the installation of these on your Paradigm. We own an Alliance Valor 40V13 and had a Paradigm 390MP prior. They both had slide covers from the Alliance factory.
    A couple of questions for you. Does this void the Alliance warranty at all? The second question is since we have slide covers which would need to be removed will their installation process also repair the holes where the slide covers mount currently?
    Great video as well on this process.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! When I spoke with Alliance about adding aftermarket upgrades to our RV like this, they explained that unless the new item was deemed to be the cause of the problem, then the warranty is still intact. So for example if we had a roof leak after 3 months and I submitted a warranty claim it would be covered if it was found to be something like the AC unit or skylight leaking. But, if it was one of our aftermarket solar panels that caused the leak it would not be covered.
      And yes, they do have various ways to fix and cover up the holes. They showed me plates they use, or sometimes they can even reuse the trim to cover certain areas. But, hopefully your slide topper brackets are up in the flange that gets cut off. Although, Ive seen them in the sidewall as well. If you send them pics they can go through the exact process on your rig. 👍 Appreciate you watching!

    When the old topper hardware is removed, is there any sign of them that you see the old install, or does the "True Topper" cover up the marks from the old topper hardware? BTW, really good video! I just didn't understand how the whole system would work until seeing your video. Also, the cutting of the top flange has been what has stopped me from moving forward. After watching the video I feel more comfortable moving forward on having my RV updated. Thanks!

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  3 місяці тому +1

      It can vary depending on where the old toppers are attached to. The sidewall part should get covered up. Some slide out attachments do get covered up or even removed when the flange is cut off. Some original toppers are attached to the side of the slide out. So it might get covered when the slide is in, but might show when the slide is out. They have to get creative with each different unit.

    I like the idea of the true topper but all they really do is sweep your slide. They don't cover it. Using the same process and technology it seems that they could manufacture them the depth of your slide and when you bring your slide in it could lap over the slide and cover most of your window. It would be beneficial because it protects the entire roof of your slide room, it would allow water to run off,it would protect your windows from damage while driving and also help protect your interior from the sun fading fabric. Just my thoughts.

      Thanks! No, warranties would only be voided if the Topper was at fault for my warranty claim. But, if it was one of my solar panels that caused a leak, the factory would not cover it. 👍

    Aaron, we noticed that the debris on your big slide goes behind the awning when you sweep it off. Can you address that? What actually happens with it all? Does it eventually just drop down? • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому +1

      Good morning! Yes, actually both of our awnings are natural "catches" for leaves and twigs, so if we parked under a tree with falling leaves it will collect there. It does get exaggerated by the sweep when closing that slide as well. If you had a traditional fabric topper it would drop the leaves in the same area when closing. It's just the design of the RV. So we can either roll the swings out and back in quick to release the leaves, or if it's really bad I can blow them out too. This was up in the PNW during fall so there was lots of falling leaves blowing around! Thankfully we don't see that a lot.
      We need to go back to the smokies soon! Such a beautiful area.....apprecaite you watching!!

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  5 місяців тому +1

      The way manufacture warranties work is an aftermarket alteration in one area won't affect your warranty in another area. For example if I had an issue with my frame or my roof it wouldn't be affected by an alteration to my slide out. Even adding all of those solar panels don't void my entire roof warranty, unless the issue was determined to be caused by the aftermarket solar panels.
      The awing actually catches falling leaves from trees if you are parked underneath them. The True Topper did exaggerate that , but all we do is run our awing out and the leaves easily come out. 👍

Something people reviewing or promoting need to put up front. One well known video blogger refuses to answer that question, though the company he "reviewed" was up front when contacted and asked. I really think you should include that information in every review you present. I believe it would be something your subscribers would be interested in. I have no issue if a company provides an upgrade, "test" gear or the like. The cost of regular toppers are around $300-$500 and then labor. I've seen quotes for around $700 installed. Our 3 from the factory would be around $2000.
