Hi, final year university student here. You do not need to be studying 10+ hours per day. Especially if you work or have other responsibilities. Expecting this is setting yourself up for failure. Be kind and gentle with yourself.
Same for me. When I try to study 10+ a day, theres me in the next day feeling miserable and not wanting to get off the bed. But some greedy part of my mind keeps wanting me to do that over and over maybe bc our teachers advice us less than 10 is not enough
She's not saying you should. She's saying you should be aware of what you have the energy for and what you're spending your energy on. She's been able to study for that long. Doesn't mean we all can. The advice is still good - if you know what you're wasting your energy on, you can divert your available energy to more productive tasks.
Wow, this is literally what I needed right now. I love studying, but I find myself losing focus so easily sometimes. Like, one day I'm studying 8 hours without any problem, but some other day I can bearly sit through 2 hours of study
@Manuel it can be, if you keep doing that without breaks. I’ve seen many of my university friends burn out to the point of mental breakdown by studying 8-12 hours a day.
@Manuel I'd say it sounds like you're doing really well. Even 6 hours for an 'off day' is very impressive and I'm sure you're making steady progress. And even if on the surface your friends are working consistently 8-12hrs, there's no point comparing yourself to them as I think many people struggle behind the scenes and we rarely get the full picture of someone's life and work habits. I suppose there will always be that person who does actually manage to breeze through, but that's very rare I think.
At 6:30 I had to stop for a moment and think about it. My studies shouldn't be about meeting the expectations of getting a good grade or getting a diploma, it should be about the joy of learning new things. I tend to forget that, thank you for the reminder !!
I loved how you mentioned neurodivergence and how that can affect people's ability to focus. I am autistic and possibly have ADHD so I know that my brain works in a different way from neurotypical people, and that's ok, I just have to learn how to work for my own brain. I really loved this idea of attention budget and I think I will input it more in to my own life.
1. Plan your study days in advance 2. start your day with mindfullness (yoga, meditation) 3. plan with deep focus in mind (admin tasks later in the day) 4. optimize workplace (alone in morning during deep focus, study together in afternonon during low effort tasks) 5. no social media during deep focus (usually morning) 6. do not feel guilty or stressed during studying, it should not be a meassure for your self-worth -> focus on joy and gratitude for study process 7. study environment; just for studying 8. take breaks during studying -> keep doing things that make you happy and energized (you can take breaks while studying one subject it is a phenomenon that helps) 9. realise that everyone is different, and everyone has their own unique way of studying :)
When I'm depressed without knowing what to do, I listen to you and it makes me want to do something, to go for a walk, for a walk... you lift my spirits.
Hi Jade, I'm a year 11 student and I think this video really helped me Because all of us are different and the "productivity" side of UA-cam was making me feel like if I didn't do 10 hours a day and got all 9s first try then I was worthless. And that I always need to find a way to improve myself and be ashamed of being average regardless of what I'm satisfied with. Sos una genia! 💖I just want to point out that a lot of the advice you've given is what my psychologist has taught me to do. I have ADHD and was only diagnosed a year ago. I used tostrugle at uni, my grades were way too low, now after a whole year of cognitive therapy for ADHD, not only my academic life has improved, but my life is much easier as well. 🙌 💖 You are making value content and that something to appreciate
Interesting that you mention spending a lot of time caring for yourself with meditations and doing little activities that give you joy like going out or doing short exercises to help in studying up to 10 hours. One of the things I sometimes notice is that I'll work on something 3 hours straight and get tired, and forget to take a meaningful break, which would definitely reenergize me.
Love what you say about being different since it's true, sometimes we want to follow these "productive" routines or habits which could actually turn out to be counterproductive for some of us 😃

I got a lot done, but looking back, I did not understand a lot of it. Now I need to go back over it and I just wasted my time. I need to make sure I'm structuring my day with intentional breaks. Attention budget is so true! Another little strategy my mum taught me… Whenever you write a task to do, allocate it “effort cubes”: you have ten in a day- how many effort cubes are each task worth? ❤

Guys don't try to set a time to study (4 - 12 hours) unless its nessacary the goal of studying is to get the most amount of information in the shortest time, so try to find better study habits instead of studying more ❤

When we engage in a task for a prolonged period, it's common to find ourselves drifting into "default mode," where our thoughts wander to the past or future. If these thoughts trigger emotions, our mood might change, causing us to delve deeper into related thoughts. This often leads to a shift in focus, pulling us away from the task at hand. When this happens, it's usually because we've missed some key details from earlier, which are crucial to understanding what we're currently doing. By consciously forcing our brain to stay focused and search for the underlying reason why we're losing concentration, we're training it to avoid slipping into default mode. Instead, we encourage logical thinking. Over time, this practice strengthens our focus, helping us to regain peak concentration. However, if we break this process, the time spent on other thoughts will directly impact the time needed to refocus. This can be challenging, but with persistence, you can achieve something extraordinary. I've had so much uni work though the year that i'm at the point where i have to write my thesis (min 16 000 words) in two weeks and i still have a paper and a presentation due - my College didn't give us dedicated time to write the thesis and it feels like i'm gonna explode before this seemingly impossible tasks so those tips are really really really welcome

I've heard something similar called cognitive load/spoon theory and I never thought that energy could be refilled by taking breaks!! That's game changing!! And btw I really love that dress on you!!
10 hours is crazy. for me if i study more than 6 hours for each day, I'll give myself a massive burnout. a burnout that takes me much longer to get back on track that it's absolutely not worth the 2 or 3 extra hours of each day
as someone with ADHD i do some of these things to help when i need to do any projects for uni, like setting a space only for doing that and trying to do things when i just woke up since thats when i have the most focus. but it also feels like my bottle has been cut in half and it is also a not a bottle but a strainer and every stream of water is me not being able to stop focusing on every single thing that is happening in the room, its exhausting and im often not able to do the things im supposed. anyways hope you are enjoying Argentina! im from buenos aires 💜
I actually cannot stand TikTok. I can genuinely feel my attention span shortening, and I actually started to feel more anxious because of content overload and the never ending scrolling on social media.
It’s interesting that you mentioned how this applies with neurodivergent people, the concept of spoons with neurodivergent people is similar to the water bottle metaphor you used, where I may only have 5 spoons for today whereas I had 10 yesterday and have to decide where I want to spend them

Agree , I think it works only like the week before the exam , when you're in a rush trying to cram everything that's left to study and can't afford to lose attention, but besides that and on the long run , 10 hours a day goes against everything this community has been advocating for against the "toxic productivity" scheme , and harms before it helps .

This is very interesting because for me I've had to work out a similar thing but in a much more physical way, I definitely do need to work on my attention generally, but as a musician I've worked out physically what works for me and we all have to do that as musicians. For example, just generally, string players can physically play for longer than brass players
One tip I've heard is to avoid screens - your phone, most obviously - for one hour after you wake up. It makes it easier to not get caught for hours on something like tik tok

Attention budget is so true! Another little strategy my mum taught me… Whenever you write a task to do, allocate it “effort cubes”: you have ten in a day- how many effort cubes are each task worth? ❤

Guys don't try to set a time to study (4 - 12 hours) unless its nessacary the goal of studying is to get the most amount of information in the shortest time, so try to find better study habits instead of studying more ❤

I've had so much uni work though the year that i'm at the point where i have to write my thesis (min 16 000 words) in two weeks and i still have a paper and a presentation due - my College didn't give us dedicated time to write the thesis and it feels like i'm gonna explode before this seemingly impossible tasks so those tips are really really really welcome

10 hours is crazy. for me if i study more than 6 hours for each day, I'll give myself a massive burnout. a burnout that takes me much longer to get back on track that it's absolutely not worth the 2 or 3 extra hours of each day

as someone with ADHD i do some of these things to help when i need to do any projects for uni, like setting a space only for doing that and trying to do things when i just woke up since thats when i have the most focus. but it also feels like my bottle has been cut in half and it is also a not a bottle but a strainer and every stream of water is me not being able to stop focusing on every single thing that is happening in the room, its exhausting and im often not able to do the things im supposed. anyways hope you are enjoying Argentina! im from buenos aires 💜
I actually cannot stand TikTok. I can genuinely feel my attention span shortening, and I actually started to feel more anxious because of content overload and the never ending scrolling on social media.

It’s interesting that you mentioned how this applies with neurodivergent people, the concept of spoons with neurodivergent people is similar to the water bottle metaphor you used, where I may only have 5 spoons for today whereas I had 10 yesterday and have to decide where I want to spend them

i have a lesson plan i've been putting off All Day. i've sat watching the hours go by. it's pretty silly because i already know what i need to put in the lesson plan. i know the timings, i know the activities, i know the resources i can turn to. but instead i've overslept two days in a row and not got this freaking lesson plan finished. this has made me feel better about my days, time to get cracking

Agree , I think it works only like the week before the exam , when you're in a rush trying to cram everything that's left to study and can't afford to lose attention, but besides that and on the long run , 10 hours a day goes against everything this community has been advocating for against the "toxic productivity" scheme , and harms before it helps .

This is very interesting because for me I've had to work out a similar thing but in a much more physical way, I definitely do need to work on my attention generally, but as a musician I've worked out physically what works for me and we all have to do that as musicians. For example, just generally, string players can physically play for longer than brass players

One tip I've heard is to avoid screens - your phone, most obviously - for one hour after you wake up. It makes it easier to not get caught for hours on something like tik tok
