Rob: I've been drumming professionally since before your birth. 64 years old, and your vid just helped me with a trad grip problem I've had my entire life. I'm not joking, man--I can now play rim shot backbeats with traditional grip. I've studied with Marv Dahlgren and Elliott Fine, and never heard about "that area of the thumb where the stick fits perfectly. It took me only minutes to correct! Bless your groovy little heart, Rob. Thanks!
same here........... 66 yrs old..........and now I can do that Moeller grip thingy triplet stuff with BOTH hands ........THANK YOU ROB !!!!
Okay you old farts.....now a young guy has something to say.... I'm just a flat out newbie and the 1st grip I will learn is the traditional and I'll learn it mainly from this video. One day I'll show you old geezers how it's done. After all, I'm younger, therefore faster, sharper and only 62 years old. : - )
@@colemanadamson5943 🤣👍

Bill Stieger Rob is The Man 👍🏻
"Traditional grip. You have to earn it".Rob, that's the best explanation of the traditional grip ever..
Trad grip is limited. If I 'm wrong swicth your right hand and use two trad grips if it's better? You know I'm right.
Have to "earn" a limitation. Stupid move
@@drummersinger5324 Using a regular grip is way better for the right hand. Most jazz drummers use the French grip (sideways match grip) for it. It's really awkward using trad grip to hit a cymbal really fast.
Why don't we use traditional grip on both hands?: Because that is awkward and inefficient.
Why don't we use a sideways matched grip for the snare drum?: Because that is awkward and inefficient.
Some people like traditional grip better. I'm not arguing against match grip. I use it. I'm just saying that your argument is, for the most part, pointless.
Different hands, different actions, different needs
@@thatonebrokenpixel4889 And there you just admitted one the limitations of the trad grip. It's a useless cymbal riding and crashing grip. This is true. It's also less powerful of a grip. It's also slower than then a regular grip. So anyone with a brain has to be stupid to play a drum set that way.
it's four o'clock.
thank you
Its 12 o' clock
Grazie
thank you
Its actually 17:22
Lovin' all this great feedback, guys! Please feel free to share this and any other lesson you dig on Facebook and litter Twitter with it! I need your help making our little community grow! 👊🏽
Rob Brown Just shared on our NZ drummers FB page bruh! another great lesson!
WICKED! 🇳🇿 Thanks for the support, man
Hi Rob , great vid my man. Common sense approach takes the mystery out of it. Long shot I know but is there any chance of pdf's of the exercises. Thanks
Frank Elia Ha! Perhaps once I get over my mild dislike for flyin' 🙂
Rob Brown Best video I have been able to find. Quick question however. How do you lift the stick with the ring finger? I am not able to do it.
Yo Rob, I've been playing percussions for over 35 years and I have never seen more detailed intricate video on traditional grip. About that little notch in your thumb I always knew it was there I just never paid attention to it like I do now after watching your video. Keep up the fantastic teachings you are phenomenal at what you do. The more detailed the teaching the better the outcome for the student and the teacher. Take all the time it takes and it'll wake the man it makes. My hat's off to you buddy. Peace
I can't stop watching your channel, it is just amazing how clear your explanations are
OMG!! I’m so glad I found you here. You’re sticking and grip exercises are brilliant 🙏🙏thank you so much
If UA-cam had suggested this video sooner, I wouldn't have had to waste so much time trying to learn traditional grip from people that have no idea how to teach music, how to properly communicate musical concepts and even how to film themselves. Thanks for this tutorial, man.
This is crystal clear, thanks my man
Thanks so much man, it's my goal in band to be a snare drummer, and hopefully one day, captain/section leader for my Drumline. You have given me exactly what I need. Drum on brother.
Great video. I might be missing something but during exercise #1 (at 14.30 ca) - To what extent do you:
1) Consider wrist movement to be necessary?
2) Think continous contact between stick and ring finger is needed? Only support, or active participation? ...and
3) Advocate movement of the thumb? Is it to be fairly stiff in favor of "cradle development" or should it be engaged to a certain extent?
You are a great teacher bro. I loved getting the little gold nuggets from this. God bless.
I´ve played traditional grip since -95 and this video actually gave me that little missing piece of the puzzle where suddenly my grip just clicked and everything fell into place... Thanks man! :)
These are, in my opinion, the most concise, no BS drum videos on UA-cam!
Thanks for the detailed lesson Rob! Much appreciated!
Amen. Subscribed. Great lesson.
Such an an amazing and detailed tutorial. Thanks heaps, keep it up
Thank you so much for this great lesson!

Spasms! I love the focus and dedication. Thanks for the help on this grip.
I have played traditional my whole life. I never thought about the ring finger at all! I always used the first finger and thumb as the motor. Good info
Amazing video! Thank you!
Great lesson, Rob. Thank you!

Excellent tutorial. Thank you!
Fantastic stuff man thanx.
Single most helpful advice I've had in ages. I'm a returning drummer in my 40s after a long absence and this has really helped me get back into the feel of things. Never cracked trad grip first time round. This time I'm going for it. Thanks Rob!

Good stuff Rob, thanks. Nice teaching style too.
I can't switch back to matched grip now. Been playing traditional grip for decades at this point...
Excellent tutorial!
Love the breakdown and explanation. Very articulate and efficiently delivered. You have obviously done a lot of work around this grip. Thank you!
Thank you man! Great video .
Great lesson bro! Thanks!!!
Thank you for this! Liked and subscribed!
Wow. What a fantastic video. Such a massive help! Thank you.
Thanks for this tutorial !!! You are a great inspiration and I really like the way you get serious about the important issues for the serious drummer ! Great !
Such a great lesson thank you so much
This is without a doubt the best tutorial on UA-cam. Ridiculously well articulated, not a moment of the 25 minutes is wasted on superfluous talk - all business, with clear instruction about the fundamentals and mechanics of the traditional grip.
I’m a beginner in terms of having zero training, and I believe that with this video alone, and practice, I’ll be able to play with a traditional grip adequately.
I can’t emphasize enough how incredibly helpful the detailed breakdown of what Iwould imagine is every aspect of the traditional grip. There are plenty of videos out there, but they all seem to emphasize advanced techniques (because there is virtually no explanation that I could actually learn from).
Great job, thanks so much for posting!
Glad it helped you out, man 🙂✌🏽
Rob Brown I’m going to go further. Lots of the videos I see on UA-cam, basically, make me want to quit. Literally. I see guys who are awesome drummers and their tutorials lack, as you say, the in depth analysis of how to actually do it. And so I’m flailing around trying to figure out what’s going on, sticks flying everywhere, and after 5 minutes I go do something else.
I may never become a great, or even good drummer, but at least I’ll have the will to give it a shot. I know because my wife has snapped at me twice for practicing and it’s only been a few days.
Thanks again, dead horse kicked.
Great video (again). Thanks.
Thank you very much!!!Very helpful-finally someone explains it thoroughly-thank you. This has helped my playing.
Great stuff, thank you
Thanks man I've been struggling but I think you just gave me a new angle to look at this grip 🙌👍👍

Bravo! You've unlocked a puzzle I've been trying to put together for years, man. Keep up the solid work!
I'm 57, been hitting things w/ sticks since I was old enuf to empty a wastebasket & turn it upside down. Gave it all up eventually, onedrink or onedrug@ a time, now I'm teaching the old dog new tricks. I really appreciate your easy to follow and informative vid! I'm not a natural student but you're a born teacher, and this tutorial was schooling me from beginning2end. ThankYou for it!!
