Hi Rob, I from England, a 72 year old, self taught, ex semi professional drummer. I always had a great feel for the rhythm and groove but never really learned how to play correctly. Just lately I've been viewing some of your videos and I must say you have opened up a host of possible ways for me to improve dramatically, whereas before, to me, there was no hope of getting my singles and doubles right, let alone a proper, fast paradiddle which was out for the question. I am now working on these things and showing some immediate improvement. I shall continue to do so. You have inspired me Rob and thank you so much for providing these insights to drumming completely free of charge. I've met too many drummers over the years who want to keep these things a black art just to show off and be better than you. I thank you for your generosity in that regard.

I'm a new drummer (at 63). Just wanted to to say I enjoy your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Plus, you seem to anticipate exactly the issues I need to work on.
Hey Rob - thanks! I only have a snare drum to worry about as I play in a batucada group, but I still have the weak hand problem. Have noted your tips and am getting to work! Hi from France.
Rob, Love your approach to teaching and ability to relate to drummers like myself who need technique focus. I went through this exercise this morning and really felt the burn on my weak hand in a short amount of time. Very excited about seeing the results as time goes on. Thanks for being out there and serving the drumming community. Peace!
Yeah , also use your weak hand, in my case the left hand, to drink your coffee, open jars, etc., etc., The more you do, the more it enforces neural plasticity. Weird but true. I see a neural psychologist for chronic pain and anxiety syndrome who uses hypnotherapy. Neural Plasticity is part of the process. I do intend to try Rob's practices he shows in the Vid. Happy Drumming.
Rob you are great! I'm a begginner drummer (a bass player who dreamed 16 years about playing drums), this is the most usefull video I've watched lately. My left hand is terrible, and now I have something to practice with. Thanks a lot dude!
Ugghhhh....This video was meant for me Dr Beatdown. When I hit my snare or hat w my dominant paw, it sounds thunderous. When I hit w my weak paw, it sounds awful. Clicking play...hoping for solution. 🥁🤠🥁
Thank you Rob, as an intermediate drummer your videos are fantastic. I've drummed for decades but I never was good, mediocre at best. After 18 years being behind a set I settled on a farm and bought an entry level kit and I'm working on things now that I never have before. I really want to get better than I ever was but at 52 it's just a hobby for now but eh... Your videos are great resources for ideas and practicing. Thanks again!
This guys approach, simplicity and stripped down method is great, easy to follow, covers every angle and its free and gone are the feathered back mullets and monster sets with crazy wild solos and the step by step breakdown for two hours after the fun stops .What Bozzio and Weckyl certainly are amazing and impressive, their sheer wizardry can also intimidate drummers, this guy eases all fears and assumptions and clearly provides solutions to specific issues every drummer encounters , priceless solutions for free!
The half pad towel exercise is great! Moeller triplets are also great left hand exercise. Efficient, accurate technique + time = speed. Its not a down pillow, its a Beat down pillow! Next merch item and marketing tag. The pillow exercise is awesome! Dusty pillows best practiced outside.
I love how you keep it simple and real , thanks man you have some great tips , broke my left wrist years ago then joined the army and didn’t play for 24 years got back into drumming and a band after I retired and had left hand week issues this is going to help a lot thanks
Rob… I’d like to personally thank you for all the AMAZING videos you’ve published. I like everything about your approach to teaching. You’re able to keep it real, interesting and practical. Thanks again for all your inspiration!! You da BOMB!!
i had a weak hand, then i got a blackjack. thanks for the lesson, i learned something about what the fingers are doing. serendipitously my left/right hands became equally dynamic by playing in malinke style drum circles. adding that to the kit was very natural. i do have to work on stick control again, this video will be a part of my future practicing.
love these vids!! as a self taught drummer for 25 years i have learned more from your vids than any of the other instructors out there. I think its because you teach how to approach playing, giving practical advice. Your vid on the Purdie Shuffle is a great example.
After years of the struggle, I figured out why my left hand couldn’t keep up I spent all my time riding with the right hand while the left played backbeats. I started playing open hand, playing ride patterns on the hi hat with left hand and on the ride with the right. I started teaching all my students like that and it works really well. Your dominant hand still pulls ahead naturally, so some of these exercises are good to bridge the gap. There is a book called the Weaker Side that addresses it with specific exercises.
Hey Rob - digging your channel champ! You are making my second run a music sooooo much fun! At 60 - you learn things sooo much faster than when you are a teenager. I have been doing strength and conditioning for Athlete’s for over 40 years! I’m applying many of the strength training principles I use with my athletes to drumming and they work - from progressive over load to contrast training - they work. Also - the principles we use to teach fast-feet and movement patterns - they work too. Maybe at 65 or 70 I will have a system to teach old new drummers to learn and get better faster! Bigger, faster, stronger has become faster, funkier, smoother! LOL Keep it coming kid - now I’m buying a shirt!!
Great to find out you're also a drummer, JC! I actually have two of your certificates for dumbbell training and bodyweight training. Thanks for your contributions and keep rocking, my friend.
Rob, thanks so much for posting this. I recently began playing again after 35 years (I am 66!) and decided to go with a matched grip this time after using traditional in my youth. The rust and new grip have rendered my left hand virtually useless. These exercises are simple yet very effective. Kudos, man.
This lesson has made a tremendous improvement to my right hand as I am left handed. I also had some surgery on my right thumb and it is slightly numb. This exercise has gone a long way to over coming the problems of that surgery giving me much better control again. Thanks Rob.
yeah my right hand sucks too lefty gang :D btw this is just a question~ do you also use a right handed setup but hit the hi-hat with your left like I do or is it just me
I decided to try a left hand set up. Hard because I’ve always seen right hand set ups/players and that imprints on me as I watch. I have to rework it mentally to then try and play it as a lefty. Really came down to which foot I felt I could train to work the kick drum.
Ive been playing for 15 years and just enjoy watching these videos even me being a experienced drummer im still learning 15 years later. your 100% with alot of stuff great work!!
I love the way you teach! You talk and demonstrate at the same time! Absolutely brilliant! I wish all drummers would watch the way you teach. Keep it up! Your awesome and have helped me so much with my drumming.
Love your stuff man..been watching for a little while & playing for a lot longer I guess, but after an afternoon spent on your vids, (not the first time) & I've come to realise I'm little messed up from being "self taught" a long time ago. I definitely have a much weaker left hand, not so much in strength, but coordination I think. I tend to lead off from my left hand despite playing right handed on a right handed kit. I finally realised this as a bit of a problem while checking out the vids re single stokes & simple fills videos & the difficulty, accompanied with a fair amount of swearing I produced while switching the sticking around according to your exercises. I've loved drums since I was 4 or 5 apparently...Now here I am at nearly 60 after playing in a few bands over the years, mainly younger years & starting over again it seems..& loving it. Thanks Rob
Man I want to thank you so much I’ve been drumming 30yrs started taking lessons when I was 11yrs old I’m 44 now and you’ve helped me tremendously I enjoy watching your videos you give great tips and make everything simple to follow thanks for what you’re doing!
Thanks Rob... I wish I had your videos decades ago. After two albums that went nowhere finally LOL I'm learning how to fix my weak hand thanks again man keep it up
I'm doing these exercises for both my weak hands haha! Love your stuff Rob, since discovering your channel a few months ago, everything drum related has changed with improvement!
About 2 weeks ago I watched a vid from another drummer (Richard welsby, he does cool stuff and makes some good drum vids) who was doing a drum cover of "rock n roll" by zepplin. In that song Bonham is playing 8ths with both the right n left hands . this is very important to the feel of the song. Now I'm 58 and have struggled with my left hand cordination from the start. And after all to get both hands evenly as strong and as tight as each other is like trying to write your name with a pen as evenly and clearly. Very tough to do for me. So when I went to play the zep song I realised just how bad lefty was. I couldn't keep up with the time. So I've been really digging in and working to get lefty up to scratch with the right. It changes everything. Before I'd often had muscle tightness and slight pain in my left trapeseus from overcompensating on my left side. I'm more aware of how I feel playing . so that's better. My dynamics are better. And I've always tried to let how relaxed and how proper the mechanics on the right teach the left. I don't know if it'll ever reach being as good and natural as the right hand but it's better and I can do the 8ths in time with the speed of the song now. I just know this has always been an issue for me highlited by the rock n roll video and Rob in perfect time did this vid while I've been working on just this issue. Thanks Rob and your esp. To me mechanics are vital and watching cats play with proper mechanics speaks to me so much more then other aspects of learning the instrument.to play with maximum sound and dynamics with using the least effort is how I try to play. You may see guys playing where their sticks and hands are way over their heads and all this huge movements but you don't need to do that for power . I see it like a pro dancer. You need to work up to those things and guys like Thomas pridgein can do it easy but that's Thomas pridgein. So this is an issue close to me and I wanted to tell my story even at 58 so y'all know it's a long tough issue for some but an important one that can lead to overcoming the yips and troubles of your weak hand. Thanks Rob you rock and are 1 of my fave teachers on you tube "and I always try to mention u and for other drummers to check out your channel. Cheers all thanks
Good stuff here. I had pretty much worked out some of the things you were saying and this give me good confirmation that I was on the right track. As a carpenter/woodworker, I have used the same techniques to "teach" my left hand to use tools. Not every situation allows enough space to swing a hammer, drive a screw, or saw a piece of wood I learned very early on that being able to do certain things with either hand would be a good thing. At the same time, my left hand is usually employed holding stuff in place so I can do work with my right hand so the student sometimes has become the teach.
Ive been watching your videos. These are real techniques thatbare really useful in producing real results. Thank you for content that is actually useful.
I am moving from bass to drums, I have strong fingers but this is a lot different, but this video helped me out a lot to get into getting my hands at the same level, thanks a lot for the tips and tricks man!
Decades of hitting into couch pillows (learned from Tony) what works for me now is solid aluminum sticks with those round rubber practice tips on two pads on top of each other.. Go easy at first and play everything slowly for about forty years.. then speed up a bit lol.. take it easy trust me.
I’m turning 50 in a couple of months and been drumming since ‘84 and my weak hand (left) still kills me. I always found it tediously grueling and physically painful to strengthen it. Perhaps it’s my posture, who knows. But it is definitely a personal bugaboo. Just gotta continue to stay on path. Thanks RB for all your priceless knowledge.
I practiced for three hours today and by the end I was ready to chop off my weak hand, I was so frustrated. I could pull off most of the rolls and whatnot independently, but the moment I tried to fit it into a groove the wheels fell of entirely. I can't wait to implement these tips in the morning.
After almost 20 yrs away from a kit I recently bought an electric kit and I'm terrible. I did have 3 strokes and 2 brain surgeries. So I will be trying these exercises thank you!
That tip with the towel is a game changer. I also had a struggle to let the fingers work on my weak hand. The wrist would always come in way to much. I fixed it by practicing with bandage that held my wrist in position. Both in combination worked wonders in no time. There is no magic tricks to learning drums, but this to me came quite close.
Really, really helpful. The 1st exercise is great, builds speed but has a great natural grove so its easy to tell when it gets sloppy. Best video I've seen since Pocaro's break down of the 1/2 time shuffle
I do that with my Prologix drum pad has half a soft side heavy resistance and the other half a firm side. So I’m doing it right👍👍👍 I also look at my right to my left looks the same and doing the same!!!
The towel thing is a great idea, Rob! I’m left handed but my left hand is the weak hand. I know, weird. I play right handed so my back beat wicked, but my ride cymbal hand can play faster. Great tips brother!
Rob you are very cool. Love your pragmatic straightforward approach to teaching drumming. I'm 68 and just started to pick up playing drums after 50 years! I wasnt great by any margin, 50 years ago, and No it is not like riding a Bike. These exercises are terrific, and not seen at other sites. Thx again for sharing and caring.
Excellent video. I struggled with left hand for years. I found George Stone Killer exercises worked for me - especially accenting first and last hit on one hand before switching to the other. The remaining stickler for me is dynamics - if I heavily accent one hand then the other has a tendency to get louder. So learning to accent heavily on one limb but remain totally loose on all other limbs is another goal. Finally integrating multiple hits is still a challenge - a paradiddle is really three hits on one hand with a gap between the first and third hit and that gap is filled by the other hand. Once I started thinking in groups of multiple bounces instead of individual hits - the speed and even flow became much easier. Pillow looks to me like it could trigger tennis elbow because the stroke goes through the playing surface instead of practicing to accept some rebound.
My brother from another mother Love your instruction Learned a lot more about patience and that technique make playing by feel a lot more fun also hurt my right arm so my Left is getting a lot less lazy
Thank Rob .....yes your presentation and articulation was just what I needed thank you brother I’m trying to get my chops back it’s been many years. I played the drums since I was a little child and through the years I’ve gone in and out I’m proud to say that I had played with the well-known Isley brothers when I was 14 years old back in Port Chester New York. Again thank you Rob I’m hooked on your videos keep going you got the chops.....O yay you got the get down.....Love it. Allan G.🥁
My left hand looks exactly like urs! Thank you for the video, I was going crazy bc I thought I was doing something wrong technique wise, good to know that I just need to focus on strengthening that left!
Hey Rob I want to say thanks for all your videos. My drum professor says you speak the truth and I find your lessons very helpful and fun! Keep it up and greetings from Costa Rica!
Just what this newb needed - and before I developed too many more bad habits! Good/important subject matter explained/demonstrated, and with a down-to-Earth presentation = great pedagogy in my book! Props! The only question I have is it seems your thumbs are on top (12:00). I've been pinching the sticks between my thumb & index finger (9 and 3) with knuckles on top (matched grip). But I just learned about 'rebound' support from ring & pinky fingers...so....I don't know what I'm doing but it's not too late for me to switch or modify my grip. Now's the time! (I'd wager you've had university drumline & percussion ensemble experience. Perhaps a grad student assistantship at a school of music? Well, glad I watched this video, and I peeked in your profile and saw a plethora more you've made since like 2006! Right on, Rob! Bob, I am! And a new subscriber!

Hey Rob - thanks! I only have a snare drum to worry about as I play in a batucada group, but I still have the weak hand problem. Have noted your tips and am getting to work! Hi from France.
Just back after 40 Years Great lesson Have to start some place this is great for me
Rob,
Love your approach to teaching and ability to relate to drummers like myself who need technique focus.
Thank you Rob..i have a weak hand ..what you just showed me will help me sooo much! Thank you!!! 😁🤘🏽🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱💜💜🥁🥁🥁
Thanks again!
well... must a million tonns of drum teachers out there, but man YOU really make the difference ;) Thnx a lot !!!
This really helped thank you! I can left sided cerebral palsy so my hand is even weaker then the “normal” person I will definitely try these :)
Rob your the Best.... , your Style , personality ,,, Great coach/ teacher .... Thanks so much
I've been practicing with a towel on my practice pad for 20minutes
My doubles increased from 180bpm to 230bpm... 😮
cappppppp
kingjayjay98 bruh😂
Is that sixteenth notes or eighth notes?
@@vergedrums Sixteenth of course.
50bpm in 20 mins?
Rob, your a fantastic teacher and you have helped my playing immensely. Thank you.
LOL
Keep it coming kid - now I’m buying a shirt!!
Thanks Rob.
yeah my right hand sucks too
lefty gang :D
btw this is just a question~ do you also use a right handed setup but hit the hi-hat with your left like I do or is it just me
I decided to try a left hand set up.
Great information Rob! This has been a big problem for me, having what I call a lazy hand.
my middle finger being the fulcrum has got to be one of the best tips on here for first time never picked up sticks before drummers
U are nice man, this is right to’ the point of the problem. Easy and precious, never seen this tips before.
Glad
Great video Rob, thank you for this one! Regards from Velence, Hungary!
Thanks rob! I just recently lost the use of my left hand. Glad you gave me this advice! Thanks man!
Matthew Guzda can someone that read this give me a tl dr
I hear you man.
At the same time, my left hand is usually employed holding stuff in place so I can do work with my right hand so the student sometimes has become the teach.
allright ! i'll focus my practices on the weekend
you're a very good teacher. Thank you so much
Ive been watching your videos. These are real techniques thatbare really useful in producing real results. Thank you for content that is actually useful.
Even as a intermediate drummer I still watch your videos
How did it go?
I’m going to give it a try to see how it works will live you feedback later about this training exercise. Thanks Rob awesome video!!!
I do that with my Prologix drum pad has half a soft side heavy resistance and the other half a firm side. So I’m doing it right👍👍👍
I also look at my right to my left looks the same and doing the same!!!
My left wrist is wore out man you are the teacher 🥁🔥
The towel thing is a great idea, Rob! I’m left handed but my left hand is the weak hand. I know, weird. I play right handed so my back beat wicked, but my ride cymbal hand can play faster. Great tips brother!
These videos are going to be so helpful to stay focused during all this down time. Thanks for keeping them coming!
Gonna start right away...thank you!!
This is an excellent lesson. Thank you for being so generous as to share it with all of us on the interwebs.
I love the way you explain thank you fore this lesson
Excellent way to develop the weak hand
Brother Brown lesson learned much thanks please keep helping us 🥁
My brother from another mother
Love your instruction
Learned a lot more about patience and that technique make playing by feel a lot more fun also hurt my right arm so my
Left is getting a lot less lazy
Thank Rob .....yes your presentation and articulation was just what I needed thank you brother I’m trying to get my chops back it’s been many years.
I played the drums since I was a little child and through the years I’ve gone in and out I’m proud to say that I had played with the well-known Isley brothers when I was 14 years old back in Port Chester New York.
Again thank you Rob I’m hooked on your videos keep going you got the chops.....O yay you got the get down.....Love it.
Allan G.🥁
Thanks for putting these videos out
My left hand looks exactly like urs! Thank you for the video, I was going crazy bc I thought I was doing something wrong technique wise, good to know that I just need to focus on strengthening that left!
man that towel idea is so practical and useful, thank you man
Hey Rob I want to say thanks for all your videos. My drum professor says you speak the truth and I find your lessons very helpful and fun! Keep it up and greetings from Costa Rica!
Dr. beat down I got a fever! And the only cure is stronger hands in a bigger cowbell! Thanks for another great lesson!
