Furby Not Working Fix - Back to 1998

- We got about 12 Furby's from 1998 out of storage. They were brand new in the box and were going to give them to some kids. However, when we put batteries in them they were not working. They showed no signs of life. There is a little motor that seizes up and needs a kick start to start working again. You must work up the Furby's fur and then remove the side screws and the face screw. You can open it up just enough to spin the motor until it fires up. Do this with battiers in the Furby. Keep spinning it until it starts. This has worked to get them in working order. Sometimes you will need to press the rest buttom on the bottom after you get it working.

I found my old Furby in the attic again and unfortunately he was dead. Luckily I found this tutorial. I'm an electronics engineer but still at a loss as to why all these Furbys stopped working because of the motor. RIP to all Furby owners who didn't make it to this tutorial. Thank you! :)

Furbies are great companions for people with special needs. As an autistic person with severe social anxiety, I love carrying my furbs with me.

Oh my gosh! It worked.... thank you!! The screw placements were a tad different on my model, but I only spun the gear about 10 x before it shot to life. Makes no sense but it worked.
Worked excellent! Told my daughter I would fix it. She loves it! Wife on the other hand not so much. Going to custom fit an on off switch in it next lol
Pet it 10-20 times on the back and it’ll go to sleep. To put it in deep sleep, clap 3x, rub its back and when it starts singing “twinkle twinkle” you press the tummy and back at the same time. Then you won’t accidentally wake it by bumping it, you’d have to turn it completely upside down to wake it.

I tried SO many times and watched SO many videos, but it wasn’t until you showed the speed you need to use in turning the wheel that I was able to finally get my furry to wake up. I can’t thank you enough! You made my day.

This worked like a charm! I didn't even need to take the head plate off, I just undid a couple screws and wheeled my way in there, only had to turn the motor like once!

I had already skinned it, and I started to turn the motor. I did it 15 times, and put batteries in it. I was shocked at the fact that it worked! Tysm!
Peeling off the fur is more difficult than you made it look. It’s tucked in so tight

Tried this for almost an hour, and was just about to give up thinking it was hooped and then put my kid’s furby together, and pressed the reset button twice and it working now, so this helped at least to get it going, so Thank you for posting the video, it did help, this was a saviour Thank you, Thank you, Thank you :D

So I'm still having some trouble getting mine to work. I've been on & off for a couple days working on it. I put the batteries in, & he now goes through a couple motions before doing the yawn & saying "cockadoodledoo" with his mouth not moving. He doesn't do the laugh he's supposed to do afterwards. I start spinning that gear, & he occasionally will continue what he was saying, but never fully kicks in. He'll move a bit & beg me to feed him as well, but he won't kick all the way on. Is there another problem inside that I may not be able to fix with this? Or should I just keep at it?
Late, I know, but I have a guess. It sounds like the Furby isn't just dying after going for a little while. There could be something else stuck. After a while, their gears tend to drop, and a Furby refuses to work if it can't move (probably a safety feature to prevent further damage). On the other hand, there could be a connection problem between the batteries and the motherboard. If it isn't getting power, it will just shut off (like anything else). I don't have a specific fix, but these are possible explanations.

Ive scratch built all kinds of RC contraptions from planes to cars to can openers, so im familiar with gears and servos. Man this must have been a nightmare to 'engineer'.

I recently got a new furby as well (the 2000 limited edition one) and it works but it keeps doing the same thing. He doesn't talk and he keeps malfunctioning. I might have to take him apart to see what's wrong but I don't want to do that :(
I’ve ran into that issue too. However, I don’t know the fix for that issue.
you might have a faulty furby (defective) and unfortunately there is no fix to that.

I was able to access the gear with an extremely small screwdriver. After a little manipulation of the gear it fired to life! I didn't have to remove the skin or take it apart!
Where is it without taking the ‘skin’ off? right eye?
I had a few of these new still in the box and just like you are saying they didn't work, but I shook one of them up and down a few times and it came to life. It works like it should. I might try to do surgery on the ones I can't shake the life into. I do have one of the early release Furbys from December of 1998. I believe the number on it are 700-800. Are these things worth anything if I get them working?

I got a 1998 furby today from carousell Singapore since I live there but they didn’t tell us it was broken cause when it talked it made a “BEEEEP BEEEP BEEP BEP” sound and it didn’t work so I found this and it worked! But I might have to fix the furby eyelids, well my mom fixed it

Hi! My furry still works as in: when you put batteries in it, it starts moving. We hear no sound, and he keeps repaeting his movement. After a minute, it stops en doesn't do anything anymore. What can we do?
Speaker has gone out and possibly some corrosion.
It started working again but there is no sound. Bummer
Mine has stopped working and now does not move but only makes a loud humming noise. I have opened it up and looked inside and power is going to the motor but it's not moving or making any noise but the weird humming noise, what do I do?
If it's humming, that means it's getting power, which is fantastic. Furbys won't wake up if something is stopping them from moving, so try this out. If it doesn't work, try skinning the thing and seeing if anything is caught. Cheers.

Little guy goes back to sleep and the only way to wake him back up is to reset him. Is there something wrong with one of the sensors?

Hold it's tounge, flip it upside down & give it a good shake. If that doesn't work, do the same, but instead of shaking it, press reset. Try both a couple times if neither work.
My furby's mouth is just closing and opening, any fixes?
Does its whole face move or just the mouth? If the whole face is moving you may have a mute furby. If its just the mouth, im not sure.. I think a gear may be loose or broken.
Mine wont work 😩 the eyelids and mouth slowly open and close with each turn but not waking at all. No sounds or movements

There is a cable tie in the bottom hem, they didn’t show it in video... most people cut it because it’s on really tight.
I’ve skinned three of them and I just put a couple spots of hot glue to hold fur back into place on body.
I can’t take the skin out, how did you do? It’s stuck there :/
Tiny long screw driver and pry. It can be tricky but it’ll go.
My 1998 furby broke I've tried fixing it I've moved the motor around and he would occasionally move now he's kinda working but he's stuck in the "restart dance" mode anyone got any tips?

I have furby in Ebay it work well and one after than I was try feed him he make glich and shut and now I put this battery on it it's just make mechanic sound I am not sure but I think battery was full and I just play him 1day and battery was Duracell

You may need to soldier a replacement in.
Before you do this please shake it strong for a while. When you take Apart your New Furby it isn’t better than a used one. Mostly the face is glued one which means the fur won’t be hold in place as good and the value will probably sink like -40%. Mine started working after shaking for 15 minutes 🤷♂️
The shaking is a way to drop the gear back in place, but one should be careful because Furbys are obnoxiously fragile.
Also, it is possible to spin the gear through the mouth.
You can also spank it on the battery compartment, that's how I revived my Witches Cat Furby

I don't get it. You never pushed the off and on button in the mouth. Plus all Furby's have a reset button that you didn't try. So, this may have worked in the beginning.
Bro it probably works if if you undo the box gently and you read the instructions. It will tell you how to turn it on.

Try new batteries and keep spinning till it fully unlocks. Besides that, I’m really not sure. Some take quite a bit of spinning to really unlock the motor fully.

There dirt cheap on eBay and if you want your first animatronic you can tear of the fur and cosmetics and overwrite the sounds to song so it could sing anything from bar or girl to rock
