I'm self-studying Japanese and due to that I'm trying to surround myself with as much as Japanese food and culture as I can. I just picked up some of these plums and planning on trying them soon.
What a nice comment! Thank you, Darkmaer-san. I hope you enjoyed making those 3 types Ume onigiri. 🍙 (Which was your favorite?) I write blogs about Japanese food & culture, so I hope you like it as well. 😉 yjc.tokyo/
I’m so excited to make them for the first time. I have a family friend who has always made them for me, and I finally found the courage to try and make them myself. It may be pretty simple, but thanks for the recipe !!!
Thank you for your comment! Wow, you came here from my blog!!! Arigatou gozaimasu!!! It might be a bit difficult to buy various umeboshi at supermarkets overseas but I hope you can get one of umeboshi and recreate this recipe!!! Enjoy~!!! 🍙
I enjoy eating Japanese rice balls with a umeboshi inside. I actually prefer umezuke, which is almost the same kind of pickled plum only it's not dried and is wet. It might be something of an acquired taste, but the ume pickled plum adds taste to the rice when you are eating the rice ball. The idea is once you reach the center of the rice ball, use your front teeth to cut off just a small portion of the plum with every mouthful of rice. That way your entire rice ball will be flavored. I don't want a plain rice ball. I prefer the rice ball have a nori seaweed full or part wrapper and the rice be mixed or covered with onigiri seasonings. Enjoy.
I am using Ume vinegar, bc of my diet sometimes I get sick od lemon .. and I made your Tuna onigiri yesterday! It is cold weather as I said but I still like onigiri. Onigiri is every season dish! 😂😂😂
Thank you for recreating my onigiri recipe! Was it Tuna Mayo Onigiri or Spicy Tuna Onigiri recipe? And Yes, I believe Onigiri is every season dish in general!!! 😉
I first tried umeboshi in my Japanese language class in high school. It was strange at first but now I like it a lot. I would love to try all different types someday. Do you remove the pit before putting in the onigiri?
Thank you so much for your comment & question! At first, I am happy to know that you studied Japanese language! Do you still study Japanese? And about your question, I normally put the umeboshi (pickled plum) with seed and remove while eating or buy the seedless umeboshi at the supermarket. ❤️
Industrially-made Japanese onigiri rice balls are plentiful in Japanese and other Asian supermarkets. The problem I find is that these onigiri are always overpriced for each one. You would think with industrialized process and packaging they could make millions of packaged onigiri rice balls cheaply. I don't like the idea of shelling out two bucks or more for a small packaged onigiri in the Japanese supermarket.
My absolute favorite onigiri! As a vegan I lived off of these when I stayed in Japan for a month and they always remind me of my trip 🍙 Thank you so much for this recipe! ^^
