Alan Wake Remastered vs Original | Graphics Comparison

- See how the original Xbox 360 release of Alan Wake stacks up the 2021 remastered version running on PS5.
Remedy Entertainment's beloved game Alan Wake returns on modern systems with Alan Wake Remastered. Originally an Xbox 360 exclusive back in 2010, the game has since seen a PC port and now a proper remaster.
Remastered is the same game but with a host of visual improvements. A major one of note is the reworking of character models and improved facial expressions. You can see a marked improvement in lip sync, and Alan no longer spends half the game with his mouth agape, the silliness of which I never noticed until comparing him side by side with his updated model. Alan might look drastically different to fans in fact--this is due to a new face model being created for this remastered version. However, Alan is still portrayed by finnish actor, Ilkka Villi just like in the original, and if anything he more closely resembles him with the updated model.
This updated look for Alan Wake might have the benefit of bridging the gap to a potential Alan Wake sequel. Remedy has been hinting at a return to Alan Wake for several years now, most recently with the final DLC for Control, which confirms both games share the same universe and even has Alan make several small appearances. The remastered version of Alan Wake has its own secrets that hint at the future of the series, so keep an eye on GameSpot for more details. - Ігри
The original still looks so good in terms of aesthetic and tone. For its time, it still holds up.
new one looks like characters had a bad case of cosmetic surgery
@@drabnail777 It might look like it, but the old ones don't have moving parts on their faces. In this one, we can see eyelids, face-muscles and lips moving independently and better...
did you even see the diner part. dat looked like SHIT
It really does and you can see that the remaster looks better, but it’s still impressive all the things they accomplished on the 360/PS3 generation. Plus the 360 original has ENERGIZER batteries! 😂👍🏻
@@drabnail777 the original had a real uncanny valley feel with faces but it's still one of the greatest games on 360
I like the smooth framerate of the new one, but god damn, the 2010 one holds up

@@reach5589 Are you crying with jealousy because you don't have a pc or something? He makes a perfectly valid point, they gimp the 'old' graphics in these videos by using old console footage to hide how little work has been done. Biggest difference i noticed in the remaster is that the faces have lost expression, the mouth on the main character barely ever moves now. It's a hack job.
It's weird, some places the remaster looks great and others it looks worse then the original.
Overall it looks more natural but it's kind of inconsistent yeah
100% agreed
You just described every remastered games.
So...a modern remaster.
@@GreedAndSelfishness right? Reminds me of the Assassins Creed 3 and Arkham remasters. Beautiful environments and gameplay but then bad cutscenes
There’s a level of dirt and grit missing from the remaster, like someone power washed everything beforehand, especially with the wood textures
I feel like most of the wood looks to much like interior wood for the exterior stuff. But hoowee, those rocks look NOICE even for todays standards
exactly and all the faces have have brightened shadows which just looks weird. On the old one some characters might have looked like raccoons with black eye sockets, but in the new one shadows casted on the faces have way less impact and saturation and always 100% visible. More clear yes, but it does not look realistic.
@@kaltask1 Yes, unfortunately, this 'remaster' actually looks downgraded in a few notable areas.... What is it with that these days? 'Remasters' which are sometimes, in some ways, WORSE than their original counterpart?? From the Crysis remaster, to Mass Effect series remaster, to this.... They all are mixed bags, better in some ways, but worse in others... Shouldn't it be better across the board?
Miss Wake looks like she got botox by an amateur doctor
Yeah. They totally killed the mood by brightening everything up for the remaster.
Im surprise how good the 360 version still looks. By the way. Alan wake is one of the best single player game ive ever played all my life
Yea I agree it definitely was one of the best games I’ve ever played I remember playing it in PC and was blown away at the time. Shame we never got a sequel
@@MODERN-GAMING-IS-TRASH There is a sequel, it's called American Nightmare.

I’ve played through the original 20x over the last decade. I can’t get over the face change, it’s way too weird for me. The remastered version is obviously smoother and nicer, that’s a given, but honestly it lacks grit and the actual dark eerie feeling the OG had.
My thoughts exactly, the faces in this game are something Wake Himself would write about.
I like his old face much better, the new one looks creepy and almost less realistic
Af5er playing through the remaster, I like the original face more. The new one looks good I guess. It is just wrong somehow. His focal points aren't right or something. Always looks angry and weird. Original Alan had the correct expressions.
Agreed. And yeah, face is all sorts of WRONG
The face literally looks the same. Just more realistic. It’s the same actor.
This isn't the first horror remaster where for some reason, it's brighter and everything has a shine to it.. What is it with developers thinking that newer means it has to be brighter? It's a horror game for god sake, what happened to all the atmosphere?
Turn down the gamma settings.
@@Peer165 im sure someone will get a reshade preset out soon so it feels more like the orginal

I feel the graphics are great but the atmosphere is worse, the darkness and dimly lit areas are replaced with much more lit areas. I personally preferred the old face of alan but thats just a small thing. I hope they didnt ruin the dark feeling of the world.
Pro tip: turn down the gamma.
I prefer the newer face model mostly due to how more expressive it is, than how it looks tbh
@@Daigon95 i meant aesthetically i preferred the old you can make the old face more expressive with less changes, for instance the chin didnt need to be changed. but like i said its a minor gripe i can live with the changes
@@kersa4743 I think it wuld look odd if the old face model was rigged to the new expressiveness tbh. Since on these short comparisons it wuld just stretch the textures in a weird way.
@Christian William Yes but if you see the old version, the blueish tint was onlyp resent in cutscenes, and then the actual game, at least during daylight, looked much brighter and colorful, now there's no discrepancy between cutscenes and gameplay. What I found quite odd were some faces... like Rose's... it' looks really weird in the remaster for some reason.
Part of me thinks a lot of the people thinking the models look "odd" is the art style shift that Remedy went through when going from Alan Wake to Control.
AWR's Models moreso resemble the proportions/stylings of Control's characters rather than AW's OG Models.
Thinking that could be part of the disconnect.
It's also because the models were changed to further match the face models the characters were based off of.
@@willfanofmanyii3751 Neither look like him but the remaster version is an affront to the eyes.

I don't think the people who 'remastered' this game even understood it.
@@bliglum That is the problem with remasters. It is not the original artists.
@@krathoon2338 Yup. Original artist's vision compromised for a quick cash grab...

@@bioshockgamer13 look at all the colors when he walks into the dinner in the OG. The remastered has a yellow color over everything.
This is a game that was made around the limits of the 360. Everething tailored around it to create one of the best looking 360 games. The clean high def look of the remaster loose some of the charm, even the original with max detalj and resoultion on pc did this.
took the words right out of my mouth
So, basically the 2010 pc-version is still the best looking version.
No but everyone has their own opinions
Nope, in my opinion is that the remastered is kinda better for me
I hate too much dark atmospheres where I can't almost see and sometimes it looks dirty which is shown in the original
the remastered is good cause of the color pallete, its not too much, unlike the original
my opinion, I respect people who still loves the original
yup
From a graphical standpoint this seems like an actual nice remaster. My initial impressions were that they didn't do much but the lighting and textures are much nicer which is what a remaster should be. Would still be alright playing the old on though, has a great aesthetic that is not affected much by low resolution textures and older lighting methods.
This game is a piece of art, I played it back in the day, and I was absolutely mesmerized with the gameplay, graphics and the history.
06:05 the scariest part of the remaster game will be this woman's lips
What do you think of Alan's face expressions? imo overall they got significantly worse in the remastered.
In original Alan often makes the broken smile radiating with sadness and exhaustion. We can see the results of Alan's self-loathing due to two years of writer's block.
In remastered, Alan often has an expression of just an angry and arrogant persona.
His new face make him look so stupid.
I was thinking the exact same thing. He has a loss of facial expressions that were great in the original. Also he lost his lips for some reason in the remaster, which makes him look odd. Sometimes he looks cross eyed as well lol. I understand they were trying to make Alan resemble his facial model in the remaster, but they kinda messed up in some ways and his original look is much better in my opinion, has much better facial expressions.
@@MMMikuruBeam lmao 😂😂
The original Alan Wake just looks so sad all the time lol. New Alan Wake looks tired, and actually looks angry during the scene when he yells at his wife.
@@MMMikuruBeam I 100% disagree with that statement. His emotions are way more pronounced than the original. Look at the dinner scene too, the waitress is actually showing more expressions, the original looks like she's really trying to emote.
The bridge comparison near the end leading up to the house, is a perfect example of the uneven darkness. It almost looks like the remaster's haze/fog is carrying the light to previously unlit areas, such as between the woodwork along the sides of the bridge.
Alan looks sadder in the original version, more anxious, depressed, whereas in the remastered version he looks more lucid, feels a bit edgy.
The new one is technicaly better, but the original one is far better in terms of mood.
If I remember correctly the game is about his depression so the original looking more bleak is a lot more fitting.
@@EraVulgaris- The character models look worse, and the reflections are completely broken. Overall, it's pretty clearly more of a cash grab than a decent remaster.
the new alan wake looks more like Mr. Clicker than Alan wake
He's missing the dark rings around his eyes from the lack of sleep.
His expression looks sadder in the original, and he looks thinner. He looks angrier in the remastered 4:29
They've messed with his face in a way that just makes him look so odd, it doesn't even look like Alan anymore. The original is the better game in my opinion just because those very old textures don't lend themselves to being displayed in 4K
shut up
I think he looks closer to the model he was originally based on. If you play Control you'll see he looks identical there. I like it.
@@davidd.6448 I'm not sure what you mean by that? Which model are you referring to? Controls art style isn't Alan wakes art style and in my opinion the two don't mix very well, and yes I'm aware of the integration of Alan wake into control's universe
@@michaelkenny4124 I am referring to the actor Ikka Villi, Alan Wake's face model. The original art style was mostly a product of the hardware limitations at the time. I'm sure if they had access to better mo-cap and graphics back then the game would have looked similar to Control.
They messed his face? How is that possible because they made him look more like his actor?
I do like that they made him look more like his live action counterpart
Yeah, atleast now he resembles a human being.
@@Peer165 Disagree. The original Alan Wake model looks more 'human being' like... The new model (though more detailed) looks more like a generic video game character.
@@bliglum Agreed. He looks more like the actor, but his eyes look robotic. The original face had a more natural relaxed face.

ok, I love the game and I'm sure the remaster means it will get new players but yea in some ways it's not an improvement higher quality scans and new lighting but a lot of it is way too bright.
While some others will think the older version is way too dark in some scenes. But hey, I'm just glad we have a remastered version of this game.
@@Arnell_Long yea same its good to see and like i said it will be good new players people who have heard of it but never played it, all so they arent chargeing £60
This is because they built the game around the old engine itself. The sequel will be on the Control game's engine with better support. Otherwise, it would have had to be a complete remake from the ground-up like we saw with Mafia, but that would simply take too much time and they need to get the Sequel up for future timelines.
@@nickblack2006 I just finished episode 3, it’s such a fun game! Also (I’m not sure if this is considered a spoiler but I might as well put it here)
I’m not sure what the difference is between the normal and heavy duty flashlight, apart from maybe a longer reach
I like origal version, IT. s more dark .
I'm reading a lot of comments here criticizing Alan's face as being too different, and while yes it is different, I like that faces on the whole are more expressive and have better lip synching compared to the first version, which was actually one of the biggest weaknesses of the original Alan Wake. Alan's wife's face was particularly stiff in the original, and I'm glad Remedy amended that for the remaster.
Playing the Remastered right now. Still as in love with the game as I was back then.
The quality has not changed too much, but the atmosphere is a bit different. And it's not always good.
Like so many 'remasters' these days... It's actually worse in as many ways as it's better. Complete mixed bag.
To me the old version looks way better and captures the atmosphere way better. I like the faces in the original. The new faces look like new persons and for some characters they remove the creepyness. Not so good for a "horror"-thriller action game.
The textures are better for sure but the skin tech is better in the original. The realistic forehead wrinkling is amazing for the 360.
I can FINALLY play this game!! I heard SO MANY good things about it! And I absolutely LOVED Remedy's "Quantum Break" and "Control"... And finally I get to play Alan Wake, remastered all nicely (and the environments I can just change with DirectX injectors like ReShare). I love for example at 2:52 the new HD textures of the road, rocks, and cement.
Can't use DirectX injectors unless on PC, in which case you have always been able to play the game
I do feel the road looks better in the OG version at 2:21 but I love how the remaster looks. I especially like the added assets like the OPEN sign at 5:36 or the touches up juke box. Little added details like that go a long way! I’m so excited!
yeah i agree with you. i just think some stuff looks better in the og version. but the remastered still looks great! i also love how smooth it’s running. the animations look better, but animations in gameplay is weird. they really do look like generic npcs just standing there.
The remaster face looks too intense, like angry. And the shadows lacking and contrast is washout.
The original still looks great. I envy the people who's going to experience it the first time. One of my all time favorite games.
That’s me right now
I’ve waited 11 years to play this game.
Me now just downloaded the remastered
I really enjoyed this game back in the days. I do wish there was more exploring during day time, it was so gorgeous.
The original still looks great but the facial animations always looked creepy and uncanny.
The only game I'm glad that ended up nothing like it was originally ment to be... At first it was going to be an open world game with crazy weather effects
Barry wheeler is such a fun character I honestly hope the sequel makes a playable mode with him
The original was a favorite of mine when it launched.
Replayed it 2 weeks ago and will finally play the remake this week.
Can't wait for A.Wake 2
I have the original 360 version and LOVE it!! It's the one game I'd love to see made into a movie
I honestly prefer the look of the original dark storm, it just looks more visually clear.
This is a remaster, not a remake so don't expect the graphical changes to be leaps and bounds better. Some people seem to think the graphical upgrades should be much better. Anyway, glad to see Alan Wake back.
Some parts are downgrades
@@ihunter543 Yeah I'm sure some people will feel that way no matter what.
Regardless of the upgrades, there will always be people who prefer some of the older graphical details.
This all feels like when re4 got it's remaster. Once the retextured the environment, you could see just how horribly flat it was. With the limited detail of the original GameCube and PS2 versions, it felt much more natural
All these remastered versions and I'm still waiting for a Max Payne 3 remaster
Ask rockstar for that
Dont need it

If ur a Sony person and haven't had the chance to play this, it's certainly worth a try. Alan wake is up there with LA Noire as great games that didn't get a sequel.

The remastered version feels misssing alot
"Feels"
Ignore your feelings and state what it's actually missing. Is it too bright and you liked how grungy the original look? Whats missing?
Why Alan looks constantly angry now. Ilkka Villi doesn't looks angry in real life.
Yeah homie now rocking that "who the hell farted?" face with maximum uptime. 😂
Clear proof that newer isn't always better. I like the darker pic of the original better. The newer version is too bright with a greater visual range. Its much scarier not being able to see as well
Cant u just adjust the brightness though?
Just finished playing for the first time (incredible game), I didn't even realize there was a remastered version since I never look at Epic Games. Also really exciting to finish the game and immediately find out they're making a sequel.
I usually don't think the original looks better than the remaster. But with this game the original really does look better.
The framerate of the new one is fantastic but it's missing some of the atmosphere for me and I can't figure out why
It's because it's a lazy cash grab... Probably slapped together by the B or C team at Remedy, who had no clue what Alan Wake was about... So they just applied the generic 'remaster' treatment, sharper, brighter, more colorful textures, more detailed character models (which somehow look worse), etc. all generically applied... But it has clearly compromised the original vision of the game.
@Tomjo5 Petty insults? No need for that now.. Yes, I do think this slapped together cash-grab compromises the original artistic vision. And it's not just the brightness, it's number of factors...
Shall we just call it a difference of opinion, and leave it at that?
I get a bit of "horror movies were scarier on VHS" feeling from this. Both the lighting and the resolution, both of the screen and textures, shows a bit too much. Both that you see more detail in the shadows and that you can easier see the limits of the mesh geometry. The tarmac texture was also a bit like that "HD Graphics mod" cat meme 🤔
did vhs make horror movies feel scarier? the newly released John Carpenter's The Thing in 4k HDR looks absolutely incredible in every way same goes for Alien.
Never had a chance to play the original, can't wait to play this finally.
Since the Max Payne days Remedy game visuals have always tried to make the best use of available hardware.
Nothing new or special tbh. Still remember playing the original it was amazing.
There are new Easter Eggs, and plenty references to CONTROL game.
There wasn't much to remaster and seemed like quick and easy nostalgia bait to make money. Having more Easter eggs aka inside jokes isn't enough justification. Alan looks like a real person now, unlike his wife who now looks like she got a bad botox job
The new Alan Wake character model might be more detailed, and more closely resemble the metrics of the actor who portrayed him etc. But the original looked better for some reason, more like a real person than a game character.
I think it's because the original one had better facial animation
Wow! This was my favorite game back years ago and I still play it sometimes. It look great! Alan and Alice look amazing! I have a question for you, GameSpot. I have a PS5 and Xbox Series X console. I’ve pre-ordered this game for the XSX. Do you recommend that I get it on the PS5 or keep the XSX version?
Obviously PS5
I don’t know about the XSX version, but I’ve played the PS5 version and I haven’t encountered any bugs or anything! There are a few frame rate issues in cutscenes though
One of the best games I've ever played the story is amazing
I've never played Alan Wake before. Thanks for the comparission. Original it is for me since it clearly looks better and the remaster removed a lot of visual effects.
is it just me or does the alan wake face look much worse in the remaster
I feel like they didn't give him proper animations, the face looks closer to the actor portraying him but it looks stiff and emotionless.
Guessing I’m not the only one here that thought he says “they went ahead and dd a new face model that more closely resembles the actor that BETRAYS him” considering even the auto-closed captions says “betrays” on the screen at 0:30 lol
What an impressive comparison
I don't know if it was the way it was captured, but the PS5 version seems highly washed out. Sharp textures are just smeared over on the PS5 version. There are deep blacks on the original that are almost grey on the PS5. Very noticeable when he's crossing the bridge and on the boat. Like, Alan's coat just straight up looks worse.
right? the black parts were supposed to look deeper and darker, to reflect the game's horror aspect, now it just looks like they turned the gamma too high
Original still shines through in some parts I see no reason to remaster other than to cash grab - a remake would’ve made much more sense but that requires wanting to do it which they didn’t.
You’re forgetting that the remaster is the first time that Alan wake has come to PlayStation, which is the only reason I’ve actually been able to play it. Very fun game
@johanan J.J bruh this shit clunky as all hell tf you mean? Sometimes you get hit out of nowhere. This was a lazy cash grab.
The new face for the wife makes it look like she hasn't eaten in two weeks and had 5 failed face-lifts.
the fog is not so visible on the remastered version :(
Gentlemen, we need to go back in time.
I think I prefer the original one's look better. Don't get me wrong, it just kinda looks creepier. Also, Alan's new face is more expressive, but damn does his eyes and eyebrows look weird.
Talk about a game that aged really, really well
Does it look like the Remaster has decreased contrast and warmer color grading? It's a little less moody. Loved the original though!

I’ve never played the game. Despite any graphical or design questions, I’m excited to give it a shot.
Man I have this game on disc and on digital. Maybe Ill get it but October is coming hot with its games.
Alanwake is one of my most favorite games so much so I was obsessed with the story, with music and got hitched to Poets of Fall, Even back in 2010 I knew that Ilkka Villi is the Model for Alan Wake character and I have always looked at him as Alan Wake infact who are we kidding here, His face was there throughout the game, but I never thought that looking at this Remaster I would kinda sorta miss the look of Character from OG game,I prefer the other Characters in OG games too as opposed to the newer look, For instance Alice looks weird not someone I'd go through all that trouble for as a protagonist lol
I feel like the remaster lost some of the atmosphere of the original due to reducing the contrast between light and dark. Especially in the case of "the darkness" it was always so unnerving to me because of how unnaturally dark it and everything it touched was. This remaster seems to smooth out that contrast a lot, and thus feels like it's lost something artistically.
Should have compared the PC version..you know..see the original at its best?
Once you have the PC version at 4K aswell I don't see thier being that big of a difference..the original PC version probably had better textures, shadows, lighting quality etc than the 360 too
Anyone else noticed the added animation to the characters? Like the waitress was waving her hands more in the PS5 version, the girlfriend did slight movements with her head when she talked in the PS5 version while her head was more static in the 360 version, the old guy seemed more animated in the PS5 version.
I wonder why? Did they take those animations out to save space on the disk?
Remedy has improved their tech for capturing actor's movements. I reckon they employed that here.
Absolute masterpiece
I genuinely think the original looks better. It has a more gritty appearance overall. The textures in the remaster seem too smoothed out, the brightness is a little high, as well as the exposure which eliminates the dark nightmarish feel of the original, and the character faces look unnatural, almost wax like. I loved this game when I had the Xbox but I doubt I’ll be buying it on my PS5.
Original still looks better because of the atmosphere and not so lightened textures. More details is cool but overall not so cool as it could be unfortunately. :(
6:53 is that tor and odin? I never played the first game so I was surprised to see them lol
Characters look weird in the remaster.
Does it still have the epic soundtrack by Poets of the Fall?
It should.
Of course. Its part of the game
The main issues of this game were and are the lack of ammo and linear gameplay. I'd love an open world "mystery" puzzle solving game in this kind of Twin Peaks setting. Washington state would be a great starting point at least geographically. Maine is overrated lol.
Disagree. I feel open world would remove the claustriophobia and set pieces. Open world just makes thing more shallow in games like this. Maine is great
Good comparison! I'll continue playing the original one though, as I'm already half-way in, and the differences are not THAT big for me to buy the new one and replay it from the start. Not even sure if the save files from original one would work in the remastered one (PC).
they should have done a remake preferably using UE5 engine than a remaster. Look how Mafia remake looks. Absolutely incredible.
I believe if while comparing a remaster with the original and you can’t tell the difference, the game probably shouldn’t have been remastered
Particularly when the remaster looks WORSE in many ways.
honestly its okay but really nothing special, i wish they would have invested a bit more time into it to make it look better but i guess they thought it wouldnt be worth it
New one looks great, I have the original on PC for free, but bought the PS5 remaster to play it again since I’m a huge fan of the “Remedy Verse” which includes Alan Wake, and Control. The new one looks fantastic and way better than the original. Those that are here saying the old one looks better are those people that own the old version and are trying to justify to themselves that it’s better in some way. That’s all well and fine, but playing this remastered on the PS5 is amazing.
Never owned the Xbox heard great things about this game so excited to play this one going in blind for the first time especially with the improved visuals
Why do original games always look better than the remaster?
Lol the original does not look better. Your eyes ok?
This may be one of the best remasters I’ve seen in a long time.
The face of Alan in the og seems like he’s very tired and that was awesome, in the new seems he’s on ketch
So the fine line between a port and a remaster is making new character models I see.
The original looks better in so many places. Especially with the dream like atmosphere.
Original looks better in my opinion
There is nothing here that we can consider it as an improvement except Alan face
Am I crazy or does the lower frame rate make it look better, especially in the lighthouse scene.
It really does not look that different.
