My father was a bombaimer on lancasters and was lucky enough to survive the war. Please remember the 55,000 that didn’t. Thank you for posting this video
My Grandfather was a flight engineer on a mk1 Lancaster with 630 then 617sq - He once told Me a story about breakfast after an op. he said crews would naturally sit together, he told of the many empty tables & the tables that where missing any number of the usual 7 crew, breakfast was taken in silence, by the time he had woken in the afternoon all evidence of the lost crews/Men had been removed. A harrowing story of life at war.
Imagine the sound of those Merlins in a squadron of Avro’s coming at you! My father was an Avro Squadron Leader decorated by King George VI at Buckingham Palace with the DFC. RIP Dah.
“Phillip Croft”. Thank you for the update. When you consider how many flew with Bomber Command that’s a very large percentage that lost their lives for us. Thank you to each and everyone of you
That includes my Half Brother, who was aboard a Halifax, on THE last heavy bombing raid of the war, over Germany (Kiel) 3/5/1945, when another Halifax, was fired on by a JU88 , causing a collision of the two Halifax's. Of 16 combined crew, only three survived--but not my brother. 5 days later, the war in Europe ended.
Philip Croft Post-war the RAF used them (renamed 'Washington') and a few crashed, a 15 Sqn one not far from East Kirkby while on approach to Coningsby.

That figure has been updated to 58,000 now, according to the Bomber Command Memorial control, in Lincoln
That engine sound gives me goose bumps.

@freedomofabird It was May 2008 I have a longer version of this video with the other aircraft that flew by that day in my uploads too.
THIS MUST BE THE RETURN TRIP AT THIS EVENT AND PLACE, AS THE TERRAIN IS THE SAME AS YOUR OTHER GREAT VID???
@jozzilion Thanks, I will have a look. I used to fish on Ladybower in the 90's, lovely scenery!
There's a crashed b 29 bomber in the Peak Districts
There is & many others too - ua-cam.com/video/7L_uDk28KRU/v-deo.html
ARE YOU SURE IT'S NOT A B17 ? I'VE NEVER HEARD OF A B29 IN EUROPE, NOT DURING THE WAR. B17'S ETC HAD PLENTY OF RANGE

Use to work with a Guy, he mentioned the plane but can't remember which type now.
He was going to take me and a friend.

What was that, a dambusters re-enactment?? :-)
PRETTY MUCH, THEY PRACTICED AT DERWENTWATER IN DERBYSHIRE, WHICH HAD SIMILAR TERRAIN TO THE TARGET AREA.
I believe the actual bombing runs were half as low as that. 60ft above the surface...
@@johnsayer116 yep, in the dark, respect to those brave men
