I've thought of going the cruise route. This is very disappointing to see the payout. The experience is a huge bit of why I want to work on a cruise, but to work so much for so little is not feasible. Sad as I've had steiner in my plan for years and have yet to see someone be so honest. I'll have to replan. Thankyou for your take.
Hello Lucy, great details. You are the best. I used to work on the Princess as computer instructor. That was an officer position, I had my own cabin, but the attendance was low and eventually Princess cancelled the program. Working on the cruise ships changed me, as you pointed in another video. I worked in an office before getting bored. After I stared to work for a cruse line, I had to smarten up. It was a fun and more work then I was used to. Thank you for the great videos.
Great video and explanation of wages and payroll deductions. While watching your videos, it's obvious to me that you are highly gifted in analytical, communication, and inter-personal skills. You are definitely Human resource trainer material. I am wondering if Virgin has recruited you to work in their HR department?
$3k-$4k clear after taxes with all of your business expenses as well as rent, food and everything else other then wifi is terrible... really... how much is you pay net after ALL of your living and business expenses... not to mention the travel... and I know spa staff that make much more than that...
Auto “gratuity” is not actual gratuity that’s the percentage of your service. That’s so weird that they split it up off from that 2%… I was gonna work for a this company but those wages are not worth the hours thank you for this honest video
Nice info, but I didn't understand the target at the top of each page, because I assumed it was the amount that you wanted to earn over the course of the cruise, which was obviously way off from what you actually made. Also, a lot of people are shocked that it's so low, but keep in mind that she had her meals and room covered, and has no car expense. I don't know what a similar position on land would expect to earn, but to have about $500 disposable income per week is not bad at all, and she gets to travel the world at the same time.
$691 for 9 days is only around $77 per day. If you are working 8 hour days that is less than $10 per hour. I am assuming from your other videos, that you would be working 10 or 12 hour days though, making that only $6-7 per hour. Minimum wage in the province I live is $14.60 per hour.
That's on land baby where you want to pay for your accomodation food taxes and all here everything is free.. so whatevee you make goes straight in your pocket!!!
IV Comment cannot be emphasised better.!! Virgin a missing a trick if they don't promote you, as I've said before you're a fantastic example, even more impressive now we know what you've endured. You deserve to do very very well
Always thought it’s so unfair that they calculate your percentage after they deduct their $35 per day. That figure should be taken off your earnings at the end, the way they do it you don’t earn the full 9 or 2% of retail or services.
So you want the $35 per day at the end? She would have paid them money! $2188 sold, then the 9% to figure out what she made doesn't cover the $35 per day for 9 days charge. $2188 at 9% is $196.12. $35 charge for 9 days is $315. She would have had to pay them $119 for working for nine days if you use your method.
Hey, Lucy! Great video. I always enjoy your videos about your time at Steiner. I am in beauty school right now and I was wondering if you had any male colleagues while working at the spa. Do you know if Steiner employs male beauty therapists? Thank you and keep up the awesome videos ❤️
Hi Ricardo! I worked for steiner myself as well. I absolutely loved it and am excited you want to join in to future as well! They do hire Males in the spa. There aren't many Male beauty therapists but when I worked there, they definitely had Male beauty therapists. Dont let yourself be held back! You will be awesome! Hope to seee you on our next ship 😊
Thank you Ricardo. I did have male colleagues. They were fitness instructors, medical spa doctors and acupuncturists. Do you work with Steiner? Also, thank you for watching xx
A few questions. A noticed that Steiner has facilities in many countries. For working on cruise ships, must students go to London? Also, is fluency in English required. On the website for the Academy, it says among all Steiner employees working on cruise ships, 27 different languages are spoken. So must all Steiner employees on cruise ships speak English first, and the other languages are just bonuses?
Hi Lucy, Great video! Keep it up. I just want to understand, Is 691$ from your first contract exclusive to your base salary? which they told us 800$ a month is anyways you're going to get + commissions. Like tips from guest. So I'm assuming it should be 800$+691$=1491$?? Kindly revert thanks!
HAHA NO. they pay you 800$ only if you do NOT make more than that In a whole month. If 691 will be for the whole month, she would have gotten 209 for Steiner to make an 800$ a month. If you make more than 800 in a month you will not get base salary.
Very interesting to see the calculation... But one thing, I didn‘t understand. What is the purpose of the target. You mentiond it, but how does it influnence the calculation?
Target doesn't infuence your income. Target is to earn incentives like time off and easier life. When you hit your target regulary you don't have multiple trainings and also you have more time off to go shore or relax.
Wow! You are making less than minimum wage. I realize that you get room, board, and uniforms, but this is really awful pay! The other thing that bothers me is that everything you make is coming from gratuity. In reality, the company is paying you next to nothing.
I know you don't pay extra for food and housing(or you can say that's included in the 70 a day)- but I honestly think this is not very impressive and is substantially less than what you(and other crew members) deserve to earn(not to mention that crew members from lower-income countries will get even less). Based on rough calculations you will probably end up saving about as much as you would if you work the same job on land, but from your videos I feel like you work longer and harder than your landside counterparts. it can be worth it for the experience from travelling around the world etc. and opportunities to earn more through promotion- but I expected crew members to earn more- and deservedly so.
actually we are granted a minimum of U$D 800 a month. If your commissions and gratuity are less than 800, they'll add up untill you reach it. If your gratuity and commissions are higher than 800, than that's what you'll receive (it's not added to the 800).
I’m a massage therapist, not a salesperson. I’m not understanding why they pay based off commission and not for the service you’re actually providing. Bullish!!!! 😡
Thanks for the video. Very interesting. However, you explained how incentives are calculated with Steiner, but what about fix salary before incentives? How much they pay weekly, fortnight or monthly? Thanks in advance
I am horrified, Exploitation. If I ever go on a cruise I specifically will not give any business to Steiner. This is not a business model I will support. This is even worse than I had imagined. Don’t work for them, Fortunately Lucy appears to have moved on to a better life with Virgin. By comparison, we pay around 25$ per hour plus benefits to the lowest paid crew member on a Pax vessel. Yes it’s tough to afford rent even on this, A Uk Pax vessel would pay ball park. and probably be quite keen to hire you. I know we would but we’re are not in the UK. We do hire ex cruise ship people.
London Wellness Academy ( formerly Steiner ) actually has the Virgin Spa contract aswell.. but yes Lucy has moved onto the shops which is with a different agency
2% of services is a ripoff! Not to mention the fact that you're paying $70 a day in lodging/food etc.? You take off $35 both from services and retail in your two examples.
I've thought of going the cruise route. This is very disappointing to see the payout. Wow this was eye opening. And I thought massage envy was bad. These are not livable wages. We work too hard to make so little 😩
Great video and explanation of wages and payroll deductions. While watching your videos, it's obvious to me that you are highly gifted in analytical, communication, and inter-personal skills. You are definitely Human resource trainer material. I am wondering if Virgin has recruited you to work in their HR department?
this video is getting better. thanks for your info.
Well explained, very easy to understand you just clear my doubts 😊😍👍
The most unfair is them charging the employee $35 a day. For the long hours & low wages, the least they could do is give them free room & board.
The pay is terrible. I was interested in applying for a cruise job but not anymore. Thank you for sharing this.
$3k-$4k clear after taxes with all of your business expenses as well as rent, food and everything else other then wifi is terrible... really... how much is you pay net after ALL of your living and business expenses... not to mention the travel... and I know spa staff that make much more than that...

@@18Damianz how?? In terms of what
@@18Damianz food and accommodation is free on curise
@@sahilnaringrekar4817 no its 35 a day
The Steiner girls always gave me great haircuts!
Nothing finer than a Steiner 😂
Are you saying this is ALL you make?! You don't have a normal/fix salary and this calculation goes extra on top? I am shook!
IV Comment cannot be emphasised better.!! Virgin a missing a trick if they don't promote you, as I've said before you're a fantastic example, even more impressive now we know what you've endured. You deserve to do very very well
thanks for this mate!
Good information….don’t you get paid by the cruise line in addition to Steiner?
Always thought it’s so unfair that they calculate your percentage after they deduct their $35 per day. That figure should be taken off your earnings at the end, the way they do it you don’t earn the full 9 or 2% of retail or services.

Hello, love your channel! Is that the rates for Medi-spa position? Do you know how much a MD at a spa can usually make? tx and cheer from Brazil
Unbelievable!I had no idea they take so much of your earned money.I always tip $50.00 cash in the Spa per treatment. Is this a fair amount?
A few questions. A noticed that Steiner has facilities in many countries. For working on cruise ships, must students go to London? Also, is fluency in English required. I was making 6.500 dollars per month in Norwegian Cruise Line in 2017/2018. 4, and 7 day cruises
Hi Lucy, Great video! Keep it up.

have you started working and confirm these salary strictures please if its exactly how she presented its very low

The 18 day cruise you made $53 a day divide that by 14 hrs $3.75 an hour. Is that your total salary?
Very interesting to see the calculation... But one thing, I didn‘t understand. What is the purpose of the target. You mentiond it, but how does it influnence the calculation?
Target doesn't infuence your income. Target is to earn incentives like time off and easier life. When you hit your target regulary you don't have multiple trainings and also you have more time off to go shore or relax.
Hi retail vs spa job which is better??? Please let me know in terms of earnings
... wait why do you pay 315 twice? it came out of the retail sales?
thank you for this! so helpful. do u know if hairstylists make about the same?
On average hairstylists make a bit less than therapists but it’s all about the tips!
I can't agree with Tide. Hairdresser can earn a lot same as all others in the spa. It's all up to you.
Do you get a salary with this commission that you make?
Wow! You are making less than minimum wage. I realize that you get room, board, and uniforms, but this is really awful pay! The other thing that bothers me is that everything you make is coming from gratuity. In reality, the company is paying you next to nothing.

something about tips by hand from the customer or you don't get?
Heyy , how old do you have to be to work for Steiner as a beauty therapist/ in the spa ?
18 xxx
Oh man I was getting ready to do this but even massage envy pays waaaay more of a commission. This isn't even legal minimum wage!
Thank you!!
Sorry, me again. I don't understand why you deducted the 35 daily from services and retail. Do they take 70 per day?
Hello,
Do you have like fix salary per month or only this?
For example, 2000$ per month plus this commisons and retails.
Thanks
actually we are granted a minimum of U$D 800 a month. If your commissions and gratuity are less than 800, they'll add up untill you reach it. If your gratuity and commissions are higher than 800, than that's what you'll receive (it's not added to the 800).
You make much more on land. Great experience but much more money on land.
Wait so you are not being paid per hour? On top of the incentives and gratuity
You would make better money working with min wage in Greegs
Why do they take $35 per day twice?
Food and accomodation
That makes no sense
So upsetting how low wages are 14 hr days 🤦🏼♀️
I’m a massage therapist, not a salesperson. I’m not understanding why they pay based off commission and not for the service you’re actually providing. Bullish!!!! 😡
2% service commission? eeek. even 10% is low and they(steiner) would still be making a TON of money
If you divide your final net by the hours you actually work you aren’t making much per hour. That 18 day cruise you were barely making $55.00 a day.
Why did u take the amount Steiner takes from you everything you earn e.g on the retail one
That's barely above minimum wage
This is so disappointing.. sounds like modern day slavery
Thanks for the video. Very interesting.
However, you explained how incentives are calculated with Steiner, but what about fix salary before incentives? How much they pay weekly, fortnight or monthly?
Thanks in advance
I got the impression this is it the who lot. She is not getting paid anything else,
That's all you made in 18 days. 😮 I make more then that at ME.
Hi Steiner I am qualified in Afro HAIRDRESSING. CAN I APPLY? AND I AM 42 YEARS OLD CAN I APPLY?
Absolutely! Apply!
Hey Lucy hope u r safe u home or still on cruise ship b safe
She's home
Thanks x

Wow! Slave wages! Who knew! Think I'll pass. . .
I will not be able to pay my bills with that. That's a joke
