According to a Yorkshire Post article from December, the track has been lifted for an archaeological site survey & plans are in place to resurrect the line. Time will tell if this will happen.
Any abandoned railway is sad but an abandoned heritage line seems somehow worse. Think of all the volunteers who put time and effort into it, very sad, Great video though

I found a small article end of 2022 in Yorkshire Post, and it says why some of the track has been lifted, and Barnsley Council are planning on reopening it: “Over the coming weeks, sections of the modern track in the station area, laid since the 1990s, will be lifted so archaeological digs and ground investigations can take place. This will also allow small temporary structures and cabins, which belong to third parties, to be removed from the site. We are also doing seasonal maintenance work to the rest of the track route."
That sounds rather reassuring. I do hope you're right.
I was a volunteer at this railway, I was so so sad when the railway had to be closed! Hopefully we can get back up and running! I always felt at home there on the steam engines!

@@TrekkingExploration Me too! So much of South Yorkshires Railway history no longer exists considering how prominent the county was in the Railway world! It was an honour and privilege to volunteer at the railway! I will miss it sorely!

We've really enjoyed this place over the years so it's good to see the work progressing on site. I wish them well getting it back up and running.
Superb footage, the Railway must open again. So sad to see it all standing idle. I live in Lincolnshire and there is a Railway walk between Woodhall Spa and Horncastle.
I took my kids there in 2018 and so glad I took the time to visit it. From I've been told the local council have a lot to answer for in regards to it being shut down. The line has potential but it won't amount to much unless the level crossings are fully reinstated and the line extended.
Seeing Elsecar station like that is a sad sight indeed. Thanks for making the film though. Much appreciated.

There is something so relaxing, yet so sad about these videos Ant. It's memories of a time gone by that we will never ever get back, I think it's called progress. Nostalgia is a brilliant thing, but it doesn't pay the bills. The reservoir shots at the end are so lovely. It could have been a Mill Pond way it looked there. Thank you.

Interesting stuff Ant. I remember when both Cortonwood and Elsecar pits were working. Hemingfield was used as a pumping shaft by then, discharging into canal basin. Great 'dronery' by the way.👍
We visited the heritage line in the mid nineties & we took our young son on a Thomas the tank steam engine ride it was a fun experience so sad its closed, all that hard work the volunteers put into making the line a great place to visit. Hope it opens up again soon. Thanks for this video Ant, great camera work again. ❤😊

Quite an interesting industrial archaeology visit! The Cromford and High Peak Railway is another interesting one to do, if you happen to visit that area. Thanks for uploading.
That's great to have many of the actual rails available. When a railway is decommissioned, they're normally pulled up to discourage looters, not to mention removing a trip hazard. I'm far from local, but I do hope trains can see this area again.
A very interesting video, with some evocative old images. It would be good to see the heritage line reopen again. The canal too - though it will require a lot of effort and money to restore. but, railway and canal would be a great twin attraction.
Really liked this one and the superb weather helped make the scenery look good too.

just came across this .. very interesting to watch from the other side of the world in nz enjoy the heritage rail in uk thanks for sharing
I remember taking a ride in that very brake van behind that same diesel Shunter just a few years ago (it may have been 2018/19). It was actually a reasonably pleasant run out and back, although I only recall going as far out as those headstocks. Therefore it surprised me to see that the line actually goes beyond that road. It’s also strange to see the yard so empty, as I can remember seeing the station filled with those MK1 carriages, and the rest of the sidings being absolutely covered in Industrial locos of varying condition. I particularly remember there being an orange steam sentinel on sleepers with its wheels draped out as part of its restoration.
Love the old time photos, it's great to see what it all looked like so long ago and some recently.

Reading comments below it looks promising for a re-opening after the archaeologists have done their work. Wouldn't it be great to also restore the canal and basin and make it an integrated experience, seeing as they were very much linked previously. Would make a lovely day out, nicely planted up, and of course, the wildlife would also come. Thanks for another lovely explore!
Lots of people don't realise what a knife edge Heritage Railway finances are on. I started my railway life on one. And even in good times things could get close. As we see with railways having to cut their cloth todau

@@TrekkingExploration Good there’s a lot to see in Barnsley. Old pits, railways, canals etc. should keep you busy for a while. I’d also recommend you look around Penistone. Some good industrial stuff around there.

What a great find, watched the video with interest as I’d been taken to the heritage centre by my brother years ago. I was saddened to see the station closed but heartened a little to hear that it may be reopened sometime in the future.

Concrete sleepers and Pandrol clips. This track must have been maximum axle loading, so relaid not long before the collieries closed.

I've only recently moved into the area; Cortonwood Retail Park is my nearest Morrison's store. I've seen the brown signs for Elsecar and keep meaning to go there, but I gather from this that it's presently closed. Last summer I walked a short distance along the Dearne Valley Railway trackbed near my home, but I fear that is largely overgrown now. I find it had to visualise steam trains running up and down there to the coal mines.
I remember this place, when i lived in the UK, they had plans to extend it to a shopping centre south of Barnsley, with a new station.
I did some voluntary work there over 20 years ago. It was a nice place and I hope that it reopens soon.
A little bit of history, Elsecar and Cortonwood collieries were ground zero for the 1984 miners strike
Many happy memories around there as i was born on tingle bridge lane , lv your adventures

course here 10Yrs ago and we went along the track you have videoed. Let`s hope it can live again one day.

I've been to the Elsecar Heritage centre hundreds of times, as family are in the area, but the railway was always out of season or shut for "unexpected" reasons. I made plans to go specifically in 2020... then was nearly in tears in November 2020 when the company folded

Their closer sounds like the sort of thing that happened here in 2020 to stop covid. Every organisation that had volunteers was shutdown by the local council. For some of them the local council are yet to be permit them to recommence operations.
Interesting to see how the Canel is following the same rout as the Railway!!! W😮W @ 20:30 - I have the nearly very same Brake Van in 'OO' Scale for my Model Railway - the 1 in your vid is No. 68499 & my 'OO' Scale Model is Number 56686. Your has the name 'Exeter' & mine has the name 'Rogerstone'. Shame that they have lifted the track - for what reason why??? Thanks for sharing Ant 😐🤔🚂🚂🚂

Cortonwood proposed closure was the catalyst for the 84 strike.

The dig was a ruse to lift the track , Barnsley council destroy everything they get their greedy mits on and have been selling Barnsley bit by bit for many years , they sold the towns tithy barn and even my local parks victorian cast iron band stand to a council down south , they are asset strippers extraordinaire, they know the price of everything and the value of nothing , the extension and level crossing at tingle bridge were vital but the council would not give them permision to operate the crossing even though the NCB did for many years without incident , i am glad i had the chance to take my kids when they were young but i doubt i will ever get the chance to take my grand son , the canal and basin was dug out by the waterways recovery group in the 90's with the council proclaiming it's support for the canal group but once the bit in front of the heritage centre was done the council support stopped and they allowed bits of the dearn and dove to be built on and roads to be built on the canal line destroying historic canal bridges to such an extent that the canal group gave up the fight , the amount of Barnsleys heritage that has been destroyed or sold to feed the councils corporate greed is nothing short of a disgrace.
Might be worth having a little dig into which secret organizations potential members of said council might be party to.
All becomes alot clearer as to why they are doing what they do,by the way its nationwide.

Ive been down to Elsecar a lot over the last year as theres a great record shop there. Every time i was there i had a nosey to see whats happening to the railway and almost every time i went there was groundworks being done, looked to be deep drilling. The 1st time i went there was a tank engine boiler outside the shed. I hope it reopens, would love to be part of getting it ready for the public

2:50this section was in the process of being relaid hence the missing sleepers the tracks you see were going to be utilised by the heritage centre until the covid lockdowns came not long after the trust found itself out of pocket & sold the entire lot to the barnsley council, from the green fence you found yourself on the 1/4 mile of bed that if it had been successfull would have been an extra station/halt for the retail park but sadly this was not to be even though the track goes over several roads via level crossings one of them was an automatic barrier that was put in but never used which was where the trains terminated a lot of locals were saddened by the loss of this heritage site & like you state in ths vid no one knows what its future is to be
Magic - An excellent video and very interesting. Perhaps there is hope for railway (and canal) - But the station site looks to be made ready for housing development, speculation always wins. We need a decent housing price crash to put a stop to the vandalism of our heritage.
You won't have any problem with Bank Holiday Monday's this May as virtually every Monday is one!
Sadly, there are far too many heritage railways in the UK, and even the biggest are facing an existential crisis as they are hit with a triple whammy of Covid, soaring inflation and the problems around coal. A small railway like this which ends at a bufferstop in the middle of nowhere, in one of the least touristy areas of the country, doesn't stand a chance. I hate to say it, but rebuilding and reopening this line as anything but a cycle path would be a waste of public money... Yorkshire already has two major steam railways, plus several second-ranking lines that remain going concerns. If the council want to reopen anything locally, get the canal rebuilt instead...
Oh you missed out, that 1787 pump house holds it's original Newcomen Atmospheric beam engine, the only one in the world still in it's original position, we visited it for a running day a few years ago.
Lets hope the line reopens Ant as it looks like a very pretty route 👍🏻

Chatterley Whitfield colliery museum in North Staffordshire suffered the same fate.
I wonder if the heritage railway will ever open again. I sincerely hope so for the sake of the volunteers and the community that it served.
I took photos of the line when the grass was all over grown and I use it as my Lock Screen
Watching this right now and it’s a shame that it’s closed down so much to see round that area and a great way to see it by steam I wonder if the group of volunteers got together again and maybe ask for it to be funded by the lottery or something and maybe get in touch with coach companies to get coach trips to the site once it’s up and running fingers crossed it can be saved

@@TrekkingExploration Just a few miles away near Stairfoot there is a lovely railway walk that goes over a lovely viaduct towards Cudworth,there is also a tunnel also near the viaduct. Worth a little exploration if you go back to Elsecar.
(some of - not sure how many they had) carriages are now down at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough railway
Yes, they brought the MK 1 set of 4 coaches. One now in service, one being restored and two in store awaiting their turn for work.

20:25 when I was last there it had track so they have only recently cleared it. It also had more engines and rubbish lying around. This suggests it’s either gone for the forceable future or being done up
