    Starting with coffee is the RIGHT way to start. :)
    Personally, I NEED to have coffee and prepare myself mentally before even going into the garage.
    Also, I target doing only one step at a time. I feel I gotta get that one step right. I don't even think about what comes next.
    And you're right about moving out of the comfort zone.
    One thing though, as i get older (66), I tend to avoid anything that can strain my back. I put my planer up on a low table plus bricks to get it to the point where I can stand comfortably with my back straight.
    I like the dowel trick with the 2 little metal spikes. Good stuff!
    Thank you for sharing this video.

      Cheers mate! Yes I definitely need a coffee before getting anything done most days. The metal spikes make drilling perfect dowels so easy. My problem is only having 2 of them. A half dozen would make it much quicker.

    Morning David - Great Project and a noticeable improvement in your woodworking skills. Good to see your looking after your neighbours too!
    When i started watching a lot of UA-cam woodworking, i was always disappointed at why everything looked so easy, yet when i tried it, it wasn't the case. Turns out Walnut isn't very hard, and is easy to work, compared to Australian Hardwoods which are frustrating at times. Pine is great when it doesn't need to be durable...
    Finally - your idea on how to cut tighter angles on the mitre saw - you should clamp an offcut piece across the back. If you look at the cut you did - there is no support behind the piece, so if the saw grabbed, it would want to pull it in which isn't good.
    Well done - and good to see the subscribers climbing!

      @MelbourneMaker  3 дні тому

      Thanks mate! Yes, not sure why I didn't think to put a scrap piece behind when doing that cut. I will next time definitely, thanks!
      I would actually love to work with some walnut, not sure why I am so fixated on it. Might just be the colour. Grass is always greener on the other side or some such. We are pretty lucky with alot of the wood we have available here, so I shouldnt complain. Just too many US youtubers showing off walnut.

    It's been a while since I've seen UnderDunn's video, but I don't recall him having to modify the housing of his planer when he did this upgrade.

      @MelbourneMaker  3 дні тому

      Interesting. I'll need to research more before the full install video. The others I've watched needed to but maybe there are some designed differently. I can see how they could modify the design easily to fit without needing to adjust the housing.

    I have the same planer and you may or may not know that the blades are double sided. I understand this is sponsored, however all you really needed to do was flip the damaged blade and you could have continued working. Replacement Makita blades are quite cheap. $500 would buy about 10 sets of replacements. Great project 👍🏼

    • @MelbourneMaker
      @MelbourneMaker  3 дні тому

      Hi mate thanks, yeh I probably should have mentioned the cost of the straight blades. I actually bought this machine second hand from a guy that did floors so I had already flipped the blades and were well past their use by date. While straight blades would be far cheaper and easier to swap over I was genuinely surprised how much better the finish was, although comparing to blunt blades probably isn't fair. The noise reduction is also good as I'm so close to the neighbours as well.

    • @decoycreativedistractions
      @decoycreativedistractions 2 дні тому

      Fair enough. If this helps your future videos [where sponsorship or product testing is involved] I felt that you may have skipped over the alternative fix in order to get straight to the endorsement. To me, this felt slightly disingenuous even though that wasn’t your intention. In saying that, I think you do a great job of [and in] your videos, and I completely understand the work it takes to make them… so, thank you for your efforts.

    You’re putting the sled in the planer backwards. It’s supposed to support the wood from behind as it’s being pushed through the planer.

    • @MelbourneMaker
      @MelbourneMaker  2 дні тому +1

      Hi mate, thanks. I actually used to use it the other way until I had a piece push off the levelling wedges. As the feed rollers rotate so as to pull/push the work piece through the machine, the cleat should be on the leading end in order to push the sled along with the work piece.

      Unfortunately not, only the scrap drawing I made. I did give it a go on sketchup, but I am useless at getting that to do what I want. If theres a couple of people keen on plans Ill see if I can get them done up on fiverr or something for everyone and let everyone know on the Pateron.
