Mineral oil never actually cures (dries) and there are concerns it might pass into/onto the food on a cutting board as some part of it always seems to stay liquid. I think I have the same 5 litre container of mineral oil! :) Tung oil, Walnut oil and Flaxseed/Linseed oil are all drying oils. They "dry" in the sense that they polymerise in the presence of oxygen. The Mahoney's finishes for example are walnut oil based but the species of walnut they use has a very different linoleic oil content compared to normal food grade walnuts used in walnut oil. Tung oil seems to pair very well with Limonene (a turpene, itself related to white spirits/mineral turps), the solvent helps the oil penetrate and cure a bit faster. I have used that mix as a bowl finish before, smells great. Have also seen that used along with wax to make wood butter or paste wax. For simplicity I switched to walnut oil and beeswax (although you can substitute soy wax if you have vegan customers). Just like with linseed oil, heating the oil up can help kick start the polymerisation. I have a few dedicated pots but have been eyeing a wax melter for a while. Do not go too hot or you get auto-ignition and a very bad day. I think industrially they do the oil heating in an oxygen free environment to avoid flash over. I use the walnut oil based paste wax/butter for chopsticks, cutting boards and cooking spoons. Repeated applications builds up the polymerised layers. I make batches and put them in small amber glass jars (that you can also get from candle maker/supplies places), a jar goes with every chopstick set or cutting board etc. I also have a few larger jars so I can pre-finish the same items and bits of the jar start to skin over forming a plastic skin so the polymerisation really seems to happen. With walnut oil based paste wax you can claim completely natural and food safe, assuming no one is allergic (switch to linseed oil if so). :) Either way keep up the great videos!

why not add some 4 screws into each side face of the mallet to support reinforce the glue joints ? recess them and mask with dowel or glued sawdust ? ? ?

I use an old electric frying pan. Dump in the oil and then the wax and turn it on. Once the wax is about 70 percent melted i turn if off and keep stsirring till the rest of the wax is melted. Then i let it cool till i can scrap it up and put into my plastic containers as i'm not selling it. Don't buy this stuff just make your own if you use it at all. I find it kind of funny that you wonder why people buy it and then make yours to sell and want people to buy it lol

Next time, use actual pallets with real pallet wood for a good challenge, not some high quality professionally made pallets that you made beforehand lol

I buy it because I don't want to sell it. I get through 2 tins a year at most so your production run would almost see me to my grave. Sure I could save 60% but just the urn thing is 20 tins at retail before buying the wax and oil. Really good content though.

Hi mate. Been watching for a while now and loving your channel. I have one constructive comment for the label of your wood butter, I would delete the 100% Natural claim. Mineral oil is a petroleum product derived as a byproduct of the refinement process; I believe. So, if anyone challenged you about it, you would lose but if you swapped in "Food Safe" instead, not only would you be safe from those challenges, but it also implies a more natural product at the same time. Good luck.

Congrats on getting your wood butter to the marketplace. Every little helps that's for sure and what's a better way to do that than putting your own finish on the market for all to purchase. As for giving away trade secrets for making your wood butter honestly I don't think it will affect your business as it's way easier to hit the buy it now button than it is to outlay the money and buy all the equipment you need to make it. I'm in the midst of building this cart and, even with your vid, I'm still making mistakes ;>) It's a good plan, but a word to the wise: BE SURE your saw fits between the right and center vertical boards (ask me how I know this). This may seem common sensical, but I screwed up my first attempt and had to start all over (with lots of scrap to use over). Thanks for your good work.
