    Why is WW1 overlooked so much compared to WW2? In my opinion the combat in WW1 was a lot more gruesome.

      slangslang1 World War 1 was in my opinion one of the most gruesome horrifying conflicts this world has ever known. Aside from the fact artillery shells were greatly improved upon and machine guns and gas were widely used; PTSD/ Shell Shock was overlooked and soldiers suffering from it were called cowards and shot for not wanting to continue fighting. I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying this conflict was for the soldiers fighting in it.

      It doesn't matter, Americans helped nonetheless. We did play a pretty major role in the victory of the triple entente, anyways. I mean, we also did lose over 100,000 men in a year and a half. Several other countries also helped in the war that you may not have even known were ever a part of it. Doesn't matter anyways, any country that helped in the war, helped in the war. No matter how large or small their role was. Every country that participated, lost good men, we need to respect that.

      Mason, nope, you loose 100 000 men during the last 8 month of the war. At this point, Germany was already in the grave... I respect the sacrifice of theses american, but saying USA played a "pretty major role in the victory" from the military side of this war, it's utter bullshit. The real role of the USA was in they supply support in this war, not their military action.

    8:13 no, just no, they think of British and french , Canadians, Australians and other commonwealth soldiers. America joined after a lot of the war was fought because they didn't want to get involved in European affairs, The worse of the battles (The Somme, passchendaele, Mons, Ardennes, Arras and Ypres) to name a few America missed, yes they did help to win the war but They played a smaller role compared to the British, commonwealth and French. However this is just my opinion, no need to start a big debate.

      Although I do think it sad that they lost so many in the short time of their involvement.

    'American and British forces shooting it out with the Germans?'
    I find that disgusting.
    Firstly, 'shooting it out' is not a way of describing the millions of deaths on both sides.
    Secondly, you made it sound like the 'good guys' were 'America and Britain'. Nonononono! WW1 was not a good vs evil war like WW2. It was a political war fought for land, power and revenge.
    Thirdly, France and Britain played such a bigger part in the war than America. Don't forget Belgium and Russia. America only joined in 1917 and only sent the first troop over midway through 1918 when the war was almost over. Yes, the resources sent over helped but in no way were America fighting and losing millions and millions of brothers, fathers, husbands, sons and friends.
    American ignorance has gone off the scale.

      Stfu you don’t know what you’re talking about serbia was invaded by Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Germany and 12% of the population fought in the war, and America joined the war in April 1917 and didn’t get to Europe until January 1918 but still managed to lose thousands of men because we helped save the allies from total German destruction

    • @funnygorillaman2230
      @funnygorillaman2230 3 роки тому

      Bob The Great Reee kinda really didnt french, Britain was pushing the Germans back more and more with out the Americans. No one can say “Americans did nothing” because they did a lot but french, Britain, and many more did way more

    • @bobthegreatreee3185
      @bobthegreatreee3185 3 роки тому

      100 subs with no video challenge did I say the Americans did more than the French or British, and no the Germans were pushing the British back and the French were launching a counter offensive the French were doing better than the British but if the Germans had successfully flanked the French it would have crushed them and with the British holding out in Amiens, once the French surrendered the Germans would then bring those troops fighting the French to march to Amiens and reinforce the Germans there, so when you think about it the Americans were a key factor to end the war

    • @funnygorillaman2230
      @funnygorillaman2230 3 роки тому

      Bob The Great Reee but obviously the allies got *supported* by the Americans and no you did not saying Americans did more. As I thought you said that. Obviously yea ur right but I mean, the Americans didn’t really have to get involved. Of course it was a key factor of winning the “wars to end all wars” but I mean, the Germans obviously made a massive like lump in French and the allies pushed them back and back obviously, yes Americans came to help but what I’m saying is the war probably would of ended up the same theirs really a 50/50 chance, and you say “if the Germans successful flanked the French ” that means it failed. Did it not? So if the French pushed from the offensive they could of broken that, and it was right around the time if not a little bit later then when the Americans got involved. And the Americans only joined because Germany sank boats carrying American people and food to Europe. And they had good success in Africa so they had way more men in Africa could of sent them back to the front lines in France for reinforcements.

    • @docwinters
      @docwinters 9 років тому +11

      Only American's think America was involved in the war, they are little more than a footnote in that conflict....
      Australia has a larger contribution in that war, and that country had only been a country for 14 years.

    • @Last555555555
      @Last555555555 9 років тому

      I don't really think of Russians shooting it out with Germans and Austrians. I think of Russians rushing at the Germans and Austrians, getting slaughtered and then running. Also that is not true at all, Australia didn't send many soldiers to the Western front and really only provided a main role in the Gallipoli invasion which was a disaster. The U.S. provided financial support and later troops losing over 100,000 ourselves to help end the war. Also Australia wasn't even a country so it isn't fair to compare them to the U.S. as they had no say in whether they should get involved or not

    • @docwinters
      @docwinters 9 років тому +3

      Last555555555 are you serious?
      Australia lost 1.38% of its total population to the war. The US lost .92%. When you have a population of only 4.5 million there is only so many troops you can send. We only had a standing army of 181,000 men at our height. And per 1000 men we lost more than ANY allied army.
      Gallipoli was the only operation australia contributed to... imma call bullshit on that one. The entire desert campaign was fought by australian, new zealand and Indian troops, in the western front all four australian regiments and our mounted troops participated in the battles of the somme, ypres, and the final operations of the war.
      As for contributions. General Monash an Australian General was the first to effectively use armor artillery and air power in support of infantry operations.
      As for Australia not being a country... 25 January 1901 Australia is Federated as a country. While part of the Empire we weren't forced to join the war no more than New Zealand, India or Canada were. We joined out of shared sense of duty. And you'll note Australia New Zealand India and Canada are all SEPARATE signatories to the surrender despite all being commonwealth nations.

    "When you think of WW1 you think of American and British troops shooting it out with the Germans" BULLSHIT
    America was barely in WW1! It was Canadian troops that broke Vimmy Ridge and helped drive the Germans back. Canada was there from the very beginning! Hell...the last days of the war were named "Canada's 100 Days"! I'm sure American history overlooks this fact since Americans seems to be obsessed with themselves. Like, so what America might have fat people? (BTW based on my experience here in America, that isn't true) and who cares if America was barely in WW1? This video was made for MOVIES. (AKA NOT REAL. MADE UP. CREATED, ACTING) so why must we fight in the comments over WW1 when the video is about Movies? IDK maybe I'm just some stupid idiot who doesn't know anything about wars and stuff, but I don't have a favorite country. Canada, America, Britain, Germany, Russia, ALL of them are GREAT countries!

      While I agree French, British, (and you're leaving out Serbian and Russian) soldiers did contribute *more* than Americans, saying "America barely did shit" is just ignorant.
      The US armed and fed the Entente nations at enormous cost (and was never paid back) and lost tens of thousands of men in the war's decisive final campaigns. Without Britain, France would have fallen in 1914, and without the US the Entente would have been defeated in 1918's Spring Offensive.

      +stevesb97 I believe it was the Australians who saved the allies on the western front during the spring offensive of 1918, as the British were in full retreat and sent the "colonials" in to slow the Germans. They slowed them but also stopped them. Americans were more prominent during the 100 day offensive.

      I would recommend the 30's version (Because I haven't watched the 70's version either) But when I watched the movie I was in my Honors History class and was the only person who got the meaning of the movie. It's gritty, it's slow at times, and it's very violent and cruel in some scenes, and that's all what WW1's all about. I would recommend seeing it; it's aged well. Also on a footnote, the last actor from the movie died a few months ago; a note given how close things are to history and then legends of which no survivors remain of.

    To be honest, there definitely was American involvement in World War I; however, they were only involved from 1917 - 1918. Countries including, but not limited to, England, France, and Australia were heavily active from 1914 - 1918 throughout continental Europe and North Africa.
    And also, the comment that World War I is an "almost forgotten" war, is rather incorrect. Coming from Australia, we celebrate the lives lost in World War I more than many countries. So... no... it isn't a forgotten war.

    I find it disgusting that some people think that Americans ended the War To End All Wars. If you think about this and do research, the Americans only HELPED. So much of the fighting were with the French, British, Germans, and a lot of other countries other than America. Now if you want to think of America and war, think of the Second World War about how they were heroes. WWI was mostly a war fought by Europeans and the countries that were dragged into it because of some kind of British, French or German rule. There was no winner during that time. Everyone was a loser, one way or another.

    • @andrewmcdonald1166
      @andrewmcdonald1166 5 років тому

      It depends on the definition of "ended" means. If you look at it like a scale, and America as a weight placed on the Allied side then the US involvement ended the war, not alone but as a part of a larger sum. If someone thinks the US ended the war solely on the battlefield than maybe not a disgusting view but an incorrect view because than they over look the 3 and half years of attrition brought to the Central Powers prior to that. There were winners of the war, for example France gain back the Alsace-Loraine from Germany, as well as overseas colonies. As did the British and other allies. The Japanese made out the best factoring their limited role. The US gained no territories in the war. They lost 120,000 troops, spent billions dollars to help bring the war to end. The fact that Allied nations did claim territory from the Central Powers help to support the isolation view in the inner war years in the US. That America, for lack of better term, was taken advantage of. The hope of bringing a peaceful end to the war really ended for the same reason it started; a battle for influence over land and resources among the European powers. So when a truly evil power emerged in Europe later, the US mistakenly was hesitant to take part in a European conflict.

    • @DSWStraightEdge
      @DSWStraightEdge 5 років тому

      Uhhhh its pretty much a given fact that if the US did not enter when we did than the war would have gone to the germans. French forces were on the BRINK of mutiny due to exhaustion, constant losses, and incompetent leadership. The british if the french forces went into mutiny would not be able to hold off the germans alone which would make the british sue for a exit from the war leaving the french alone against the germans. Not to mention the russian front was closed by the time the US came into the war. Leading to hundred of thousands of german troops being revitalized and sent to the western front. Its also a fact that sympathy from the majority of the US population was for the germans as a large number of our population had german ancestry and alot of the US still saw the british as our bitter enemy from the war of 1812 and the support the british gave the south during our civil war. TWO things brought us into the allied side, unrestricted submarine warfare with the sinking of the luisitiania, and the infamous Zimmerman Telegram. If those things did not happen, the US would have either stayed out of the war resulting in a almost guaranteed german victory or would have joined the central powers. So yea we did win the war for you, when we came in our Doughboys reinforced exhausted french lines which resulted in the threatening mutiny being squashed.

    • @andrewmcdonald1166
      @andrewmcdonald1166 5 років тому

      The US leant millions of dollars to the Allies, especially Great Britain during the War. This was extremely helpful to their war effort and should not be overlooked. The availability of US resources and raw materials was extremely helpful as was the arrival of millions of troops. These troops besides their insertion to the front, their presence and the fact that millions more were coming was a factor in the German's decision to end the war. As the situation existed in 1918 the US participation in the War was a decisive factor for the end of the war. So from that point in the war I am in agreement
      Although there were many in the US that supported the German and Central Power side, or at least were oppose to the Russian Empire, the majority of the country sided with the French and British from day one. Even among those that were against the US entry into the war, most were against the US entering a European war, and not out of support of Germany or the Central Powers. The war of 1812 was long over and by the end of the 19th Century US and British relations were very good.
      The Lusitania was sunk in 1915, two years before the US went to war. It angered many Americans but not enough to want the country to go to war over it. In the election of 1916 Wilson ran on the slogan he kept us out the war, so staying out the war was still popular in November 1916.
      The Zimmerman note by itself was not significant because the Germans had been supporting different Mexican factions for years to cause trouble for the US. It was in their best interest for the US to be busy dealing with Mexico and not thinking about the war in Europe. The US government was well aware of this, the difference with the Zimmerman note was it was released to public to help sway support for the US future entry into the war, which had been gaining support since the unrestricted sinking of ships by the Germans starting in 1917.
      The US had too much invested financially with the Allied powers to sit back and allow them to lose the war. There really is not any circumstance I could see where the US would have joined the Central Powers and sided against the British. I think one could make the case that the US possibly could have sat the war out. But once the US banks and investment firms had so much tied in the war, the US wanted to have a say in the outcome and also on how things would be after the war.

    I met Dalton Trumbo many years ago as a youth. Mom brought me to a celebration in my youth and some how I became a bartender there. As a youth I served generous portion. He came to get a drink and I asked him why there were so many war books in school libraries and he told me " because the powers that be wanted them there.
    Still true now, but not as well honored.

    I generally agree with the choices here, although I would have ranked "Paths of Glory" as No. 1 on the list, despite "Lawrence of Arabia" being the outstanding film that it is.
    Also, I would have included the 1960s film "The Blue Max" among the honorable mentions for its exploration of chivalry vs. brutal egotism and the cold cynicism of high command (in the person of James Mason as a German general)-plus great aerial dog-fighting sequences performed with recreations of biplanes flown by pilots of the Irish Air Corps.

    Ok, the comment at 8:13 or so seems to have riled everyone up, and I figured I would add my two cents. First, watchmojo is canadian, so im confused as to why the comments seem to be all directed towards "ignorant americans".second, as an american, I can honestlly say that even I disagree with that line. I mean, we didnt actually send in troops until about 1917 if I remember correctly. So my only guess is that watchmojo either A. Were attempting to pander to an american audience or B. Didnt care/didnt check their facts.

    The Lost Battalion (2001 film) there was also a 1919 movie. But, the 2001 film starred Rick Schroder as Major Charles Whittlesey, it's a made-for-television film about the Lost Battalion of World War I, which was cut off and surrounded by German forces in the Argonne Forest during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of 1918. I can highly recommend it.

    I was happy to see that 'The African Queen' made the list even though it is really more of an adventure movie than it is a war movie. I'm going to guess that 'Sergeant York' didn't even get an honorable mention since it was more biographical than about war. I also agree with others who noted that 'The Blue Max' didn't even receive an honorable mention.
