Advice needed! So, two months ago I planted a plumeria branch that I bought at the airport in Oahu in a well drained pot with potting soil. Yesterday my son accidentally knocked over the pot and I discovered that the branch had not yet rooted, at all! Literally, the flat cut on the bottom of the branch looks the same as two months ago. There's a chance I've been overwatering it, though since the drainage is so good I wonder if that is really the problem or not. I live near Walnut Creek, California, so it's seen plenty of sun and warmth this summer. Any advise on where I should go from here? Maybe let it the branch dry out for a week and then repot it, but be more conservative with water going forward? Thanks for any tips. Hi Jeff, just saw this video and it's the first one of yours that I watched. Question, how well will the plumeria do in central Florida around the Orlando area?
Hi Jeff! I came across your video about a month ago since I had been having a difficult time rooting my plumeria cutting. I tried this method twice now each with fresh spaghnum moss and still no roots. Do you have any other tips on rooting? Thank you!
Thank you for this video! Can I apply rooting powder to ends before closing it in the moss & plastic ? Also, any tips for planting in NJ? I will be keeping it Indoors until temperature is steady in May.
Hi Jeff: Love your video. I am in So. Calif. and have been unsuccessfully trying to grow Plumeria for 45 yr. They always die on me. Nevertheless to say I have tried 45 different ways to grow them. I haven't tried the moss rooting way so am eager to try. I recently purchased a stick. It's old grown part looks very dehydrated (wrinkled) and the end is very sunken in, with just about 3" of new growth at the tip. I am obsessed w/being successful. If I get them to grow they never survive past two seasons. Is this a time to try to root or should I just leave the stick till Spring? I've even been successful at sprouting seeds only to have them die off. I currently have two seed starts that are on this there 2nd winter about 24" with the leaves still on. They are inside. I have planted them in clear plastic container so I can watch root development and will not water them again till Sprng. Is this right? Wish me luck and thank you for any additional advice you can give.
Marie, I know one of the most frustrating things is to hear how easy they are to grow and they are, IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE PLANTS NEEDS AND WHY. For instance, in Jeff's video he uses a cutting that looks to be around 24" long. A cutting that long is easier to root than one that's 5" long because the taller/bigger cutting has more energy in it to root. I don't buy any cutting less than 10". Also if you have a longer cutting, if you catch root rot early enough, you can cut, and start over with enough of a healthy cutting to be successful. I find the most important key to growing plumeria is the medium they are grown in and understanding that "wet feet" does not mean they don't like alot of water(remember they are tropical plants) but what it DOES mean is they don't like sitting in stagnet, muddy water. Fast draining soil is key. If they are not lasting 2 seasons that suggest to me that they are getting too much water over the winter. They should only get a drizzle or misting of water if they are showing signs of dehydration during dormancy. Jungle Jacks seem to need more pampering during their dormancy.
Yes it does. On the branch you can see the scars where the leaves fell off. They kinda look like a smile . Make sure the smile is right side up when planting.😃
Hi Vanessa, Sorry about that, I got distracted. It was my intention to do a follow up right away, but dint actually do a follow up until 2 weeks ago! Look for my plumeria video dated June 11, 2022
If you r in FL, you can just stick a cutting in the ground and leave it alone. I know some ppl who leave the cutting to harden off first and some who just take a fresh cutting and stick it in dry ground and don't even water and they just grow. I guess they like the sandy soil here in central and south FL. After they root in the ground and during the wet season (not the dry season when they are dormant) I take a little liquid miracle grow fertilizer mixed in water at half the recommended dose and water with that. They really take off then. That's just what has worked for me. Good luck.
Hi Jeff.. I just bought a plumeria cutting and I’m definitely going to try this method. Thanks for the great video. Do you ever sell cuttings from your tree? I’m in center California near you.
A branch broke off my tree. Should I remove the flowers and leaves and stems before doing this? How long should I let the branch dry? Itʻs been about 2 days since I found the branch. Thank you!
Jeff I have a plumeria tree I thought had frozen I pulled it out of pot I cut the branches and I could see some nice looking wood where I cut it . Can I save this ?
Hello!, A friend of mine gave me a Plumeria cutting from Hawaii. I live in Pa and currently potted the cutting in a regular sand/soil mix and water it when the soil seems very dry, will this work? ( it’s currently been in the 80-90s since I’ve potted the cutting, I am a young planter so getting special supplies is sometimes tricky )
Hi, I was wondering how long after you take a cutting you have to plant it? I got some cuttings a few weeks ago, with the weather in so cal I figured I’d use this method and keep them inside. Will they do okay if they are shriveled??
Thank you for this tutorial Jeff. I have a question, my neighbor gave me a cutting but it’s got a lot of beautiful flowers. My questions is, should I cut all the leaves and flowers or I can leave as is when trying to root plumeria?
@@TropicalGardenGuy thank you also when rooting I used to always put it in water first but would u recommend the same way after I dry out the cutting with the humidifier?
It’s been on the high 90s to low 100s here in zone 8b Central Texas. I have quite a few leggy plumerias and didn’t get a chance to take cuttings in the spring. Is it too hot to take cuttings now? I know to take cuttings only when we’ll hydrated.
Hello Jeff sir, I live in Merced California. And recently I brought Plumeria plants from Lowe’s. And I potted them in tera cots pots. Can u pls help me if I need to water then weekly or once in 2 wks. So far I have them in my back yard where they get full day sun. After 4:30 Pm then they get partial sunlight . Pls help me when I need to water them and when I need to keep them inside house? Thx so much sir. I watch all ur videos. Also can u pls suggest me where I can buy desert rose plant ? Thx so much sir. I appreciate your help. 🙏🙏
All depends on your soil, temps and health of the plant. When healthy, I water mine everyday in summer but stop oct 1 and move potted plumeria in to shade
Hi rose check out the follow up video that I did. GROWING PLUMERIA | Best Potting soil | Tips for No Root Rot! | Special Content at the end of video! ua-cam.com/video/7rzvVY7Xoq0/v-deo.html
Thanks for the informative video. I’m going to try your bag method with a cutting I received from a friend. I noticed that the trunk of your cutting looks white-ish. Did you apply a uv paint to it? I noticed another UA-camr applied a uv paint to his cutting to prevent sunburn and to repel insects. Is this needed?
Hey Jeff. I live on Oahu and found what I think is a plumeria clipping someone dropped. It has 3 branches and it has 2 leaves on one of them. The stem is approx. 5 inches. The bottom of the stem is still slightly moist. Given my excellent conditions with temperature, etc., do I need to use this method - or would I have a high probability of success if I just drop it in a pot with soil and not water for a few weeks? I don’t think the slight moister should be enough for root rot but I’m an amateur here… Should I cut those 2 leaves? Seems like someone left them on purpose. Thanks for your time! Great videos.
Given that you have near perfect conditions, I would just get a well drained potting soil and pot it up, water it lightly once and then don’t water it until it’s completely dry. Btw, I’m currently on Oahu as well visiting family.
Nice video. So now I have my plumaria stems with a lot of roots. Still no leaves. What next? Do I now water slightly more often? vs not at all while I was waiting for roots? Or continue as I did while waiting for roots?
@@TropicalGardenGuy still a little cool at night in NW Florida so I'll wait for another week or two for it to be consistently above 60 degrees at night. Thanks.
I got one from the French market in new orleans and it not during nothing the lady said stick in potting soil I bought soil back in May 2022 what can I do????
I leave them for as long as a year. But if you feel like it has root rot, lift it out and check. Then put back into fresh soil with very good drainage and only water if soil is dry
It’s now in peat moss and covered in a plastic bag. After a couple of weeks then do I take the plastic bag off and pot it? With or without the peat moss? Thanks
Thanks for the info! I'm trying to grow a stem that has leaves already on the stem and also had a few short roots (my neighbor gave it to me). Can I put the stem in any type of soil? Then water it every few weeks? I live in Southern California so it's usually sunny here. Oh also when I do initially put the stem into the soil and water the soil should I water the soil so it's very well watered then let it drain out?
Just moss.. interesting. thx. I have a plumeria with shriveled & hollowed feel in the trunk but the top 2 branches are still green with no leaves sprouting for over a month or 2. Also, those green branches are at most 2 inches long. Should I leave as is and hope it survives ( getting more hollow more n more) or should I cut just the 2in green branches off and root them ? I didn't know it was in trouble til it wrinkled and getting hollow. thanks.
Hard to say without seeing the plant, but usually shriveled means rot… if thats the case , you may need to start over with a hardy variety such as celandine .
Hey Jeff! Hello neighbor, I'm located in Stockton. I've got 3 cuttings in well draining soil in my garage but temps have been around 65ish in there. My potting medium has been moist for a couple weeks and I'm worried about root rot. Should I put these outside so they can dry out? Or should I avoid sunlight?
Hi, I need an urgent help😔 To cut the long story short, my plumeria rubra has soft stems (still green, but shrivelling from the bottom up to where the green skin starts) and leaves are drooping. To expand on it: I live in the UK, and had it less than a month. When I first received it, it looked healthy ,but a lot bigger plant than expected (1m x 1m instead of 40cm) in a small pot. In the first few days I noticed a bad smell from its soil, but didn't pay much attention to it. Soon leaves started going yellow and falling off. I blamed myself for wrong watering. 2 weeks ago I started touching the soil before pouring a little water in it (as we had a dry spell) and I only used rain water for it. But nothing worked. I suspect that it has a root rot and its spreading to the stems. What is the best thing to do now? I don't have a lot of experience with tropical plants and now wish I never had it in the first place as it's awful to see it dying. Could you please help?
Hard to say without seeing the plant and knowing exact conditions. IMO , Once rot has set in its pretty hard to stop it. When I was a newbie, I had to throw a lot away. I have had rot in spots where, i uprooted the plant , put in a dry shaded area. After a week or so I replanted it in loose damp soil . And left it alone to recover.
@@TropicalGardenGuy thank you so much for coming back to me! I'm going to have a look at its roots (if any left) and if all dead, would it make sense to try and propagate from a soft stem? I'm confused as I don't understand whether the stem is soft bcs of the root system damage and stem is just dehydrated , OR it's got fungus already inside the stem and it's just going to spread.

Once in the ground how often do i water? I live in east texas and out summers get very hot and humid, should I plant it in direct sunlight or should I allow for shading?
Thanks for the info! Could you share some advice on how to care for plumerias in the ground on your zone? 9b if I'm not wrong, so you may have light freezes.
Yes, my favorite plumeria is the celedine. Very hardy, I still plant I very well drained soil up against the south side of my house. I only fertilize with low nitrogen fert in spring and stop watering Oct 1
I'm in Fremont, so similar weather patterns to you. I got a cutting just this month in December from a friend. Would a heat mat sweet to 80F and a grow light work for propagating, or should I hang onto the cutting for a while before attempting?
Hi Amy, It depends on the condition of the branch and the health of the mother tree. But If I were to take a cutting from my plumeria at this time of the year, Id keep the branch indoors to callus for a week or two, then put on a heat mat. Be careful that there is material between the heat mat and the cutting as since you wont be watering during the initial rooting process. The part where moss touches the heat mat can get too hot a dry the moss out.

Jeff my friend gave me 2 cuttings can I put them in a pot and give a good drink of water then when will I water it next
I water them only when completely dry
Hi Jeff:
Love your video. I am in So. Calif. and have been unsuccessfully trying to grow Plumeria for 45 yr.
Best thing thing I can say is I treat them like a cactus.
Water only when needed
I just bought some cuttings. Should I cut some off the bottom ? I seen people do it on other videos
If it has a nice callus, I’d plant it as it is.
Looks easy. I was given a couple of cuttings that just look like sticks. Not even sure which end is up. Does it matter which end goes into the soil?
Yes it does.
On the branch you can see the scars where the leaves fell off.
They kinda look like a smile .
Make sure the smile is right side up when planting.😃
@@TropicalGardenGuy thank you!
Is there a follow up video? How did it root? How long did it take. Thanks V
Hi Vanessa, Sorry about that, I got distracted. It was my intention to do a follow up right away, but dint actually do a follow up until 2 weeks ago!
Look for my plumeria video dated June 11, 2022
I’m in Florida trying to get cuttings to root without getting overwatered. Can I chop the bad end off let it callus and start over again?
I’ve done that many times!..happy growing, Jeff
Hi Rosa, Great!
Nope. I dont sell stuff but they are commonly found at the big box stores.
@@TropicalGardenGuy Wo! That's great to know. (I've been wondering...)
A branch broke off my tree. Should I remove the flowers and leaves and stems before doing this? How long should I let the branch dry? Itʻs been about 2 days since I found the branch. Thank you!
About a week
@@TropicalGardenGuy Thank you
So what do we do with the branch after a couple weeks of rooting in the bag? Please finish this procedure..
Just plant it using loose well draining soil
Jeff I have a plumeria tree I thought had frozen I pulled it out of pot I cut the branches and I could see some nice looking wood where I cut it . Can I save this ?
Worth a try. Use fresh well drained soil.
Wow thanks for the quick response
Hello!, A friend of mine gave me a Plumeria cutting from Hawaii. I live in Pa and currently potted the cutting in a regular sand/soil mix and water it when the soil seems very dry, will this work? ( it’s currently been in the 80-90s since I’ve potted the cutting, I am a young planter so getting special supplies is sometimes tricky )
Should work
do you put your cuttings in the shade to root?
Semi shade
Hi, I was wondering how long after you take a cutting you have to plant it? I got some cuttings a few weeks ago, with the weather in so cal I figured I’d use this method and keep them inside. Will they do okay if they are shriveled??
Once roots show I plant it if it’s warm
Is it okay to leave it outside if it’s in the mid-high 80’s?
They love temps in mid 80’s!
Thank you for this tutorial Jeff. I have a question, my neighbor gave me a cutting but it’s got a lot of beautiful flowers. My questions is, should I cut all the leaves and flowers or I can leave as is when trying to root plumeria?
Yea I cut off all leaves and flowers.
I leave the cutting alone indoor for a week or two to harden off b4 rooting
Im trying to grow a stem base cut i sealed it but it has no top but my question is that was two weeks ago should water it or wait?
i keep them in a humid place but no water
@@TropicalGardenGuy thank you also when rooting I used to always put it in water first but would u recommend the same way after I dry out the cutting with the humidifier?
It’s been on the high 90s to low 100s here in zone 8b Central Texas. I have quite a few leggy plumerias and didn’t get a chance to take cuttings in the spring. Is it too hot to take cuttings now? I know to take cuttings only when we’ll hydrated.
Same temps here, I be taken cuttings.
Just give them a little shade so they don’t dry out.
@@TropicalGardenGuy Will do, thanks!
@@TropicalGardenGuy thx so much sir. I appreciate your help sir. God bless you sir🙏
Jeff, do you think the plumeria would root if the temp is a constant 70 degrees instead of 80?
Yes but it can take a lot longer and rot issues are more common
I got me a stem I cut it in half for me to grow did I do good iam drying them out and l went and got potting soil so when do I water them

I paint the trunk with a 50/50 mix white latex paint a water. It helps here in the blazing summer
@@TropicalGardenGuy I use Calimine lotion on mine, lol
I don’t think the slight moister should be enough for root rot but I’m an amateur here…
Should I cut those 2 leaves? Seems like someone left them on purpose.
Thanks for your time! Great videos.
Given that you have near perfect conditions, I would just get a well drained potting soil and pot it up, water it lightly once and then don’t water it until it’s completely dry.
Btw, I’m currently on Oahu as well visiting family.
Does it need sunlight to propagate the root growth?
Not sure.
But since roots are below ground, I doubt light is required for root initiation
Nice video. So now I have my plumaria stems with a lot of roots. Still no leaves. What next? Do I now water slightly more often? vs not at all while I was waiting for roots? Or continue as I did while waiting for roots?
Hard to say without seeing the tree and your conditions.
If the soil is still chilly you might see improvement when the soil warms
@@TropicalGardenGuy still a little cool at night in NW Florida so I'll wait for another week or two for it to be consistently above 60 degrees at night. Thanks.
Any cuttings for sale?
How do I get my plumeria to branch out. It’s just a stem and no other stems.
Break off the growing tip
I got one from the French market in new orleans and it not during nothing the lady said stick in potting soil I bought soil back in May 2022 what can I do????
I leave them for as long as a year. But if you feel like it has root rot, lift it out and check. Then put back into fresh soil with very good drainage and only water if soil is dry
It’s now in peat moss and covered in a plastic bag. After a couple of weeks then do I take the plastic bag off and pot it? With or without the peat moss? Thanks
Once you see roots filling up the plastic, gently removed plastic and pot it up!
Thank you
Mark, You are welcome! Happy Growing -Jeff
How many times did you transplant
Several
Thanks for the info! I'm trying to grow a stem that has leaves already on the stem and also had a few short roots (my neighbor gave it to me). Can I put the stem in any type of soil? Then water it every few weeks? I live in Southern California so it's usually sunny here. Oh also when I do initially put the stem into the soil and water the soil should I water the soil so it's very well watered then let it drain out?
I use a well draining potting soil, cactus mix works.
Water once then not again until almost bone dry
@@TropicalGardenGuy Thank you!
@@TropicalGardenGuy As far as sun should I put it in indirect sunlight not direct?
yup
Just moss.. interesting.
Wanted to inquire what is the white paint on the plumeria cutting? 🙂
50/50 water and latex paint
How long have you been rooting your plumarius like this? Also when do you pot it any larger pot?
Hi Teresa, I first tried this method about 2 or 3 years ago. ..Jeff
In which month we root a plumeria branch
Any warm month
Hi thank you for this video! My plumeria cutting that I left for 2 weeks to callous looks like it has dried up! Is that normal?
Hard to tell without seeing it, but the end does dry a little.
how long before it grows roots?
All depends on temps.
Usually a month or so for me
Hard to say without seeing what stage of regrowth.
Plumerias can root in an almost dry medium and like the soil warm
Thank you.
Welcome!
Why is the trunk whiteish?
Protection against sunburn
Oh really?what do you put in it I think mine can use this right about now with this heat
@@TropicalGardenGuy @The TropicalGardenGuy I have tried to take photos, not sure if any good

@@TropicalGardenGuy thanks for your reply! Don't you cover your plumerias in the ground with some protective cloth when freezes are forecasted?
No, They are planted close to the house
👌👍

Isn’t that a Hawaiian Frangipani ?
Yes, in Cali we usually call in plumeria
Longest 18 inches I have ever seen 😂
