    Good info, Steve. It's February 18, 2022 now and I will order 4 plumeria cuttings from an Etsy vendor next month when it starts to warm up here in Lake Charles, LA. We are almost to the Gulf of Mexico and enjoy a sub-tropical climate with a few mild freezes (typically low 30's to high 20's for nighttime lows) each year and it will warm back up to the 40's or 50's the next day. There's another UA-cam channel called "Jake's Plumerias" which has a lot of information about this sort of thing. It's my first time dealing with plumerias and I don't want to fail. Two enemies of these plants I've found out are 1. cold weather and 2. root rot, and I'm aware of each and I'm learning what NOT to do watching videos like these. Thanks again for posting. 😊

    I went to visit my mother. She surprised me with Plumeria cuttings from her huge tree. I am so thrilled, you have no idea. I donated my plumerias to church, only to have them sold by the kindest man who's hard of hearing for $5, when I said $15 each, after growing them for two or so years. Of course this women bought them all up knowing they were worth more than $5. They were worth more than $15. So my mother is being kind to me. The thing is, my mother's 85 with arthritis in her hands, and she just broke/tore the branches off the tree, so they are not clean cuts at all but some look basically clean and others show a layered torn look. I'm sure they're good! Should I cut the end with a straight cut? Can I use a knive? Can they be left to dry out as is? It seems horrible when I see your wonderful cutter to use a knive, if it's even necessary.

    • @RogersGardensCDM
      @RogersGardensCDM  6 років тому +1

      After letting them dry out they *should* be okay.
      Plumerias are very hardy so just keep them in slightly moistened soil and let them dry out a little in between waterings, they should root pretty quickly.
      If she wants, she can cut them on the diagonal and then let them dry for a week, then plant them, too. ~Roger's Gardens

    In Australia we call these Frangipani /s, so it's interesting to see the name Plumeria in America. Good video. I also heard that instead of the root stimulant powder, you can also use raw (unprocessed) honey. I did this with a large Dracenea Marginata which was cut off at the base, and it worked.

    • @badrinarayan91

    • @taylorhillard4868
      @taylorhillard4868 2 дні тому

      The plants come from the Americas and both names are used here. However Plumeria is the name of the genus, so it is more correct to use in areas where they may not speak the same language (botanical names are all in Latin and apply universally, regardless of which language the speaker is using)

    Hi! I have a plumeria plant that i got in Oahu 5 years ago as a cut stem. I followed the directions for planting off the pkg and 5 years later it's still thriving! I live on the coast of NC, so winters can get a little too cold for it outside, so it's in a pot sitting behind my sink in the kitchen, corner sink with Windows on each corner. The first year in the spring i had beautiful flowers, but none since then? Also, it is now pretty tall with one main stalk and 2 that shoot off from the top of the main, one to the left, other to the right, and both of those are about 12-18 inches long. My main question is, i plan on cutting off the 2 stalks that shoot out from the main stalk and propogate them into their own plants, but what will happen to my main stalk plant? Will it grow more stalks? It has a tiny hump that came up in btwn the 2 stalks, as if it would be a 3rd stalk, but then it stopped and calloused over...

    • @andrearadomski3710
      @andrearadomski3710 4 роки тому +1

      If your plant isn't blooming, it's not getting enough direct sun. You may also try some Bloom Booster fertilizer. When you take the cuttings from the main stalk, the main stalk will grow more branches right below from where the cuts were made.

    I cut some plumerias and put them in wet soil right away. They started growing, but after 4 weeks they tapered off. I pulled one out of the soil and there was no roots started. Is this bcz i didnt let them dry (close bottom cut off) first? Did they just suck water from bottom and fiz out? I have since pulled them out and put them on the concrete to dry. Do you think they will start up again if i put them in soil?

    • @RogersGardensCDM
      @RogersGardensCDM  7 років тому

      It's hard to say because I don't know how wet the soil was.
      It's recommended to let the plumeria dry out after cutting it, yes, but as long as the soil isn't too moist, it shouldn't be a problem. Plumerias tend to thrive on neglect (leaning towards succulent type care) and as long as it hasn't begun rotting, it should be fine but make sure that when you water, that it should dry out between waterings. - Roger's Gardens

    I have been watching different videos of cuttings. Everyone are diffferent. Some say after cutting take out all the leaves and leave it for 1 week on the shade. Some cutting videos plant it right away. So which one plant right away? Or leave the cutting for a week or so?

    • @RogersGardensCDM
      @RogersGardensCDM  4 роки тому

      There are many ways to be successful with plumeria cuttings. Usually the best time is while they are dormant but they are so hearty and easy to grow that most times you should be okay, as long as there is good drainage and the soil is not too wet for the cutting, especially over wintering. We look forward to your next visit, Suzanne

    *how much sunlight does a cutting need?*
    No roots calloused over just put into soil. How much sunlight? I had mine in direct sunlight and was told I was going to kill all 22 of my cutting. I was told to give them as much daylight as possible from rooting to growth and my friend is telling me the opposite.

I watched a ton of videos before I planted my cuttings so I wouldn't screw it up and so my cuttings would have the best chances of survival. I could swear I saw a video that said to cut the dried out end of the cutting at an angle before coating it in the rooting hormone and planting. I did allow enough time for the rooting hormone to dry out before I planted the cuttings, but we're talking minutes, not days. I'm concerned that I may have done it wrong and caused them to not want to take root and grow. Should I pull them up and start all over again? How long do they typically take to form roots and is there a way I'd be able to tell, short of pulling them out of the pots?? I have noticed that each of the pots has 2 or 3 little green seedlings of some sort (weeds??) popping up, so something is definitely growing!
    One of my cuttings had an inflo on it that I assume had gone dormant last winter, so I was super excited about that, until one of my cats decided to remove it (jerk). Should I be concerned about that? Will it still grow those again in the future?
    Thanks so much for your wonderful and helpful videos and for answering questions for all us amateurs and hopefuls.
    Kay

      Hi Kay, I hope your cuttings are growing by now, however, yes, you should let the cut end dry out for a week or three, until it is brown or calloused just like a humans' wound that creates a "scab" or crust. Cutting on an angle is not vital, but, provides a larger area for roots to begin growing, a larger area for rooting hormone to affix and if all the leaves are gone, you know which end to plant! You will know when the cutting has roots, as leaf growth will begin. The flower head will grow anew - no need to stress, plus you do not want flowers to be growing at the same time as the cutting is trying to grow new roots. Yes, weeds are opportunistic and only rob the soil in your pots of its nutrients; nutrients that should be left for the cutting, so pull any weeds out as soon as you see them.
      Personally I make my Frangipani cuttings slightly differently to the method described in this clip. Cuttings can be taken at almost any time of year, however, for best results, take your cuttings at the first sign of new seasons' growth in early spring, as the plant is moving from Winter dormancy to Spring/Summer growth. I like using this opportunity to also "shape" the donor plant, by taking the cuttings from area(s) where you want the donor plant to not extend its' growth.
      Select a healthy branch between 8 and 14 inches or so, although they can be longer or shorter, the 8-14 inch length makes them easier to handle. After removing the cutting from the donor plant, I trim the length back to the desired length, making a 45 degree cut at the rooting end. Next I place the cutting(s) in a bucket and fill it with water until all the cut end(s) are submerged, so about 4 inches of water is usually enough, and let them soak for about 10-15 minutes. You will notice a lot of sap in the water - this is normal and of no consequence. Take the cutting out of the water and let "drip dry" for a minute or two. Next, I use a small paintbrush to apply rooting gel/liquid (Clonex purple is good) to the cut end. Let the cuttings absorb the gel for 30-60 minutes, then trim back the leaves and/or any flower buds, leaving perhaps 1 or 2 of the smallest leaves, if indeed the cutting has any leaves.
      After this I place the cuttings in a shaded and well ventilated garage or similar environment, and out of direct sunlight, for 2-6 weeks (depending on climatic conditions), allowing enough time for the cut end to dry completely and form a callous that "heals" the cut end, a bit like a humans' crust/scab on a wound. You will be able to see that the cut end has healed as the cut end will turn brown and look dried out. This is good and this is when the cutting is finally ready to plant.
      I do not re-apply any rooting hormone, however, if you are really keen or somewhat concerned, a second application of rooting powder or gel can not hurt. (After taking dozens of Frangipani cuttings, not once have I ever applied a second coating of rooting powder or gel and have had 100% success). I then plant the prepared cuttings in a decent sized pot (6-8 inch), as you want to avoid transplanting it too soon and while the cutting is still getting established; i.e. a pot big enough for 2 seasons of growth. For the soil, I use PREMIUM potting mix (skimping on cheap soil will just make it harder for the cutting to thrive). Plant the cutting about 5-6 inches deep and gently firm down the soil. After planting, water once, quite generously, then only water lightly and only when the top 2-4 inches of soil has dried out, which may be 1-15 days or even longer, depending on your climate.
      I can not stress enough; the soil should be dry-ish to moist only and never wet (apart for the very first watering when planting the cutting, as this allows the previously dried cutting to re-hydrate). If the soil is too wet or the pot watered too often, the cutting will rot. Think borderline neglect while waiting for the cutting to establish itself, which may take between 3-12 weeks, again depending on climate, so don't give up too soon. You will know when the cutting has established itself as leaf growth will begin/become noticeable. Remember; keep the soil moist to dry and never wet; and all should be well. Naturally the cutting can be placed direct in the garden if the soil is healthy and friable, however, starting them in pots makes it easier to monitor them and keep the soil at the desired moisture level. There is no need to feed or fertilize the cuttings until good growth is occurring.
      Hope this helps.
      PS - Here in Australia, we call Plumeria "Frangipani".

    Can you leave the Plumeria in a Pot or do you have to plant in the ground?

    • @brentonw5702

      Yes you can leave it in a pot, but this will limit growth. Best to replant it every two years or so into a larger pot with fresh soil. Premium potting mix works well.
      If you have limited space, applying a granular, slow release type of fertilizer will help keep your plant healthy. Otherwise placing a layer of organic compost/manure blend each Spring will help, adding more once the compost/manure blend has broken down/been "absorbed", will keep your Plumeria in top condition.

    Hello. I purchased a plumeria cutting while in Lihue. I soaked the cutting in water and changed it daily. I now have two full leaves and about 10 unopened ones. How long before I plant it in soil?

      Rogers Gardens I have tried to root 2 plumerias and since April, however no roots what so ever. What am I doing wrong? They are firm on the top but dry and wringled on the cut end. They do have some little leaves growing but its as if it just stopped at one point and no roots.

      I have not done it yet, ever. That is why I came to watch his video . However many of my neighbors have done it how you did, and I have seen them take quite a while , so maybe there is hope. though the man on video said roots take shorter time than yours. So again, I don 't know for sure.

      I had this same situation after buying a cutting in Honolulu. I have had it in water for 3 months! Yikes! I kept waiting on the roots to form, following the package directions. The end is "gooshy" but I have 4 big leaves and several others. Should I let it dry out again, or cut the gooshy end off? I hope my souvenir isn't ruined---I want to help it survive!

      Is it getting at least 6 hours of sun every day? They need heat and sun to bloom.
