Saw this just after getting the Volca Modular over a year ago and it didn’t make sense - now I finally get it after lots of practice. The instruction is clear and descriptive, my skull is just thick! One modification I like is to Split the stepped Woggle to both time and math, inverted and sent to pitch; so the high pitched notes are short and the low pitches are long. I’ve got a full 7u case now but I still like kicking back with the Volca for a quick fix! Great that it’s got a sequencer and reverb in a small battery powered box.
Per previous comments the Forbidden Planet soundtrack is NOT by Todd Barton, it was by Louis & Bebe Barron and was composed with basic (pre-synthesiser) sound generators. Barton is a later & still currently working synthesizer expert who replicated the patches in Buchla, and named them the Krell Patch, after the extinct race in the movie who had left behind their 'music', in the film. Barton is still giving us excellent information/content in this forum.
Thank you for correcting this. There were no Buchla synths in the 50s(!) The source concept and Krell textures are from the Barron’s, and their phenomenal work on Forbidden Planet. Their groundbreaking textures, haunted my childhood. 😂🙏🏼
Korg nailed this device. They opened up pandora's box of west coast synthesis for under 200 bucks. If I could make just one suggestion to Korg....I would pay double if it sounded better (higher voltage and headroom, better components)
Nice! I think I'm slowly sinking into the big black hole that is modular :D How are you getting on with the new lil device? Filled your room with other modules yet? :D
Got mine a few days ago, still trying to figure this beast out. Not used to WC synthesis at all. In that specific patch, I'd like the pitch input, in this case the interpolated S&H to be quantized by the selected scale. That'd be such a nice option. That said, I love how this synth pushes me into the "what if ?..." uncharted territories.
He did.... the one time it mattered at the beginning when he joined the two oscillators. The other routings were for randomness and pitch. Then he added the reverb for the effect but by then the patch was already randomizing notes. Watch it again, you’ll see what I mean. 👍🏻👍🏻
Volca Modular 2 that can patch into other modular gear? That's my only hang up, still tempted to buy this one. Volca sample 2 is at the top of my list now after the upgrades.
Well, right now I’m in the early stages of designing and building expansions, beginning with a splitter for the CV input, that has two inputs, some external pots as mixers or attenuators. The next step is to build dividers and amplifiers to work with standard equipment. I’ve already built a simple dual LFO that can be attached to the +-3v3 of the VM. You also can use the raw output of a Daisy Seed, that gives the same voltage, and I think that an Arduino can work too. 😊
Exactly! The so-called “Krell patch” created on the Buchla, was to *simulate* the kinds of sounds the Barrons created with circuits that would dies within seconds and tape editing (the latter done mostly by Bebe. Louis did more creating of the circuits and the sounds).
The Soundtrack was created by Bebe Barron and Louis’s Barron Because they weren’t in a union They could not claim it was music So they called the soundtrack to the film Electronic Tonalities Also they could not go for an Oscar Shame should have joined a union

So glad the krell patch is achievable on the volca modular, honestly convinced me to buy it

Thats awesome, i love self playing modular patches, good clear tutorial, thank you.

Thanks, taking the time to make these tutorials is invaluable to so many. So, 😊thanks.
It would be nice to see a note played after every patch cable, so we can slowly hear how the sound changes.

It's alive!!!
Awesome thanks for the great patching ideas!!
Volca modular is a wonderfull little monster , so many things To discoverd on it :)
good_price-extreme_possibilities :)
Awesome, keep the patches coming! So much to learn! Thank you!
Excellent! Going to give this a go...

Just great!
I hope the next volca is like an ems synthi aks.
Don’t think it was a Buchla in the 1950's. I believe the Barrons used tape and classical lab techniques.
Buchla BEMI was created in 1962 and Forbidden Planet was released in 1956... Time distortion !
Absolutely correct - they used multiple tapes to create modulations

I'm glad someone said this before I had the chance. Cheers!
I lost concentration in a fit of purist irk over introductory comment…😮

Cool.
thanks, very niceee
lil burp at 1:33 hahaha
LOL!
hey man. These are old man sounds. We can't control em.
Volca cz please
They Buchlas back in the '50s?

I guess I’m gonna get one then 🤦🏻♂️
