The cool thing about this, Mike; is that it's what you wanted exactly, it was a cheap alternative to achieving your goals. It's a well built car meaning you do save that 70 grand, which can all be spent on making the car better. Furthermore I'm a rotary guy and want to build a 3 rotor at some stage in life, if I went on classifieds and found a 3 rotor rx8 with a good history, I'd obviously buy it and save the money of dropping the three rotor in my standard 8 so I would be able to achieve my goals much more quickly.
Great purchase Mike, glad to see someone doing that well for themselves!

I get it Mike. It's a smart move. I did the same thing, I bought a Mach 1 that already had a supercharger and supporting fuel mods. About a year later I had a fully built motor installed and cranked up the boost. That cost me a good chunk of cash ($11k!), but I still saved like $8000 already by getting it with the blower installed and that only had a few thousand miles on it.

I'll put my hater hat on for a minute and explain from the point of view of an ex-R35 owner and someone who has been around R35s forever why I wouldn't have bought this GTR. I think you'll find that after a little bit the "high hp GTR" novelty will wear off and you will be left with something not very pleasant to own. Sure, it will be always be fast, but having 1000 hp in a street car usually ends up being excessive and unusable on a daily basis unless you are non stop ripping around like a fool and driving dangerously. Even in stock form the GTR can sometimes be hard to fully unleash on public roads without getting yourself in some trouble. What this means is that, if you are a sensible person, for the most part you will drive this car normally and eventually realize that you paid a bunch of money for something that a) is a potential money pit due to it being so modified b) worry about due to its extensive modifications (not from the financial perspective but from not wanting a broken 65K+ car on your hands) c) could have went a different route that was more sensible and brought you more pleasure. In addition the CBA GTR you bought in stock form can be had for ~50K and as I am sure you already know, having 70K of aftermarket parts really doesn't do much for the value of your car. With that said, there are some technical reasons I would not have bought this GTR as well mainly related to CBA vs DBA vs 2017 GTR. In no particular order: 1. CBA has a low quality interior, it wears quickly and shows how cheap it is 2. CBA nav screen is very low resolution 3. CBA exterior is somewhat "soft" looking compared to the DBA and the new 2017 (but that is personal preference). 4. CBA doesn't have the CF rear diffuser 5. CBA head/tail lights are already starting to look dated 6. CBA is quite unrefined, loud, rattles, noisy etc. DBA is better but the 2017 is nearly perfect in this arena. 7. CBAs are aging and dropping in value faster than I would have thought they would have. With that said, I think it is a smarter move to buy a lightly used DBA GTR as they can be had for 65 - 78K depending on mileage. Another option, which is the route I am taking, is to wait 12 months for used 2017 GTRs to hit the market and pick one up for 80-90K. You will have a nearly new, more aggressive and modern looking GTR with warranty, all the interior, exterior and mechanical updates. You would be able to drive the thing very comfortably, without a worry in the world and still be able to sell it a couple years down the road with very little depreciation and no extra money invested. In addition, no major changes will be made between now and 2020 when the R36 is released/announced making this the best and last R35 Nissan ever makes.

The Weekend Driver true. Its fun if we can set up a street made race track. At the end of a 3 day period of setting this up (with permission with the city government to close down roads) we probably be making more money than spending for the meet. My grammar terrible but why not? Alot of people want to go fast

no one builds their own gtr anyway. if they "build" it, they just buy their own parts and send it to a shop. and i imagine it's cheaper to do what he did than to buy even a car of the same year that's stock and then buy the mods on his own

I have no problem what so ever starting with a built car already. I would just call them extra goodies on top of the cake. End of the day it definitely is a much smarter decision, saves a lot of time and money, and it does achieve what the intended goal is for. Wth go for it! I'm sure people out there want to watch a build for there own selfish reasons. I have friends like that. At the end of the day, they don't pay your bills, they sure as hell not gonna buy parts for your car. As long as it makes you happy, I'm happy to see you making your dreams come alive, it's inspirational. Good luck!

@Aaron, Exactly how many cars have you built? The reason I ask, is because the people who say "Built Not Bought"(myself included) aren't fanboys of other people's rides enough to pay a premium for them. We don't necessarily agree with others who have built the "same" ride or how it was done, and most definitely don't want to be buying someone else's hack job. IDGAF who you are, what you've worked on etc. I know that people who "build" 1khp cars don't do the same things I would do to achieve that benchmark. Call it hacks (like me) or "easy workarounds". By building your own machine and really taking the time to learn about it and do it, you know EXACTLY where the weak points will be, and have enough knowledge about the machine that, should you encounter a problem, YOU can fix it YOURSELF!!! I'm an 80s kid and have built EVERY vehicle I've owned but 1, and the only one who's given me wild troubles was the one I didn't build myself. When it comes down to having a "modified car", It has been, is, and ALWAYS WILL BE Built and not Bought!!!

Having someone else build the car is the same as buying it... You do you, I don't think you'll get much judgement from people because taking apart a GTR is a pain in the ass. Most people don't know how much of a pain in the ass the car can be until one rolls into their shop. BUT you shouldn't even bring up the built vs bought thing, saying you will build it but in actuality someone else is lol

I don't see anything wrong by buying a 1000 GTR, - the time, the mods all ready installed on that car is a steal !

How do you know it definitely has 1000 hp, do you have dyno sheets to back up what you are saying the car has.

My thoughts buying used is smart you don't take the massive depreciation hit of buying new. 1000 hp is completely insane for a street car, driving it it has to be better than sex right?

At 8:29, Mike, you say that you don't know what numbers we're looking at. Ironically, we haven't been given numbers to compare.

i see what you mean when you said have to set your mind in the repairing and/or changing parts....when i bought my evo x i never thought i would be playing $600 for one headlight but again when you love cars it doesn't really matter... you have to keep in mind that parts cost alot of money and yeah a gtr is a diffent ball thatn a evo

Why are gtrs so popular? I honestly don't get it. At car meets there are so many gtrs. For half of the msrp you could get an evo which is also awd, lighter, and manual, build it up to like 800whp and walk gtrs all day. If you want a v8. You could get a c6 z06, slap a supercharger on it with a few bolt ons and be way faster then a gtr.

  • @alexrhodes6695

What is the point of buying a car that's already built, if your going to rebuild it anyways? You say that somebody has put 70 grand into the car but that doesn't really matter if your going to just replace the things hes already done to it, again. I don't know all the details of how much you paid for it or what your really going to do to the car. I'm not hating I'm just asking a reasonable question.

    • @SmurfinWRX

+Alex Rhodes look at the exterior of the car. It's $20k+ in parts alone. I went through some of this on the video.

+SmurfinWRX I understand just personally I would have gone for a stock one with lower miles. nice pickup though. I don't think the stock car needs any more power IMO.
