Oke
Super glad you're covering this! Shows like The Backyardigans and Bubbleguppies had music that I loved even as an adult! Heck, I even had favorite episodes or songs that I'd stick around for over watching other shows. XD
They definitely weren't slacking, and it's neat to see the music being examined in-depth like this!
ok
Hey Adam! Saw your video on Nebula, good stuff. The last song of the episode is a "Baião". The center part of Brasil was similar to the wild west (but with better aesthetics, seriously, google "Cangaçeiro") and they made some pretty good songs. Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes are pretty good, but they are the "Gringo Friendly" part of Brasilian music, for a good old Baião search for Luiz Gonzaga, who was even better than Tom and Vinicius (they said it, not me) but didn't made international success because he was black and wore traditional Cangaço attire.
I show the episodes Race Around the World and Surf´s Up to my middle school classes every year and break down the music. Can´t go wrong with Evan Lurie and Billy Martin!

Also I feel like castaways has this weird subdued feeling, like you're in some way distanced from the events being described. Like the events being described include not having a home and facing potential death at sea, but the emotional vibes I get from it are weirdly muted. That, I think is one of the key reasons people related to it, because recently it feels like a lot of shit has been going down but also accepting it in an emotionally disconnected way is the norm. Also the central theme of having no home, to me that reeks of the current generations collective discomfort.
I mean, it's a show targeted at little kids; you ain't just gonna tell little kids "oh yeah as castaways these characters face the risk of eventually dying btw?"
Big words, caveman no understand
Excellent analysis. Castaways has that delicate and nostalgic feeling of being distant from a memory that you never had
This is the first time I’ve heard it, maybe the UK’s public broadcasters didn’t want to pay for the rights to this one or maybe I was already too old when it happened, but yeah I was thinking it’s this laid back beat like everyone’s chilling, even though it’s discussing an indefinite survival situation with no shelter. And I did relate to that feeling of being rudderless but accepting it and making a home in it.

@@_swesters_ Good idea... In theory. Two things: 1) just because the music is garbage doesn't mean the whole show is. Example: Octonauts is a fantastic show that reuses the same generic canned music every single episode. 2) Unless a show is harmful I don't refuse to let my kids watch it. I want kids to develop their own taste in media and that means letting them experiment with stuff I don't enjoy. Also, I have enough battles with my kids about stuff that matters, I don't need to start a war over a show they want to watch but their know-it-all patent doesn't think the music is good enough.

I've always felt like there is a darkness or sadness in bossa nova music, despite the cheery sound. Castaways especially gives me that feeling. The lyrics are literally about being in a shipwreck and being lost! It feels very "shit's fucked so let's have fun with it i guess". Jeremy Messersmith's 2018 album, Late Stage Capitalism, also uses a lot of bossa nova sound with pretty difficult lyrics. I haven't explored classic bossa nova lyrics too much but the songs often seem to be about yearning or longing. I don't know, maybe it's just the emo in me, but bossa nova always feels a little bit sad to me. And singing "we're stuck where we are, we are castaways" in 2021, after having not left my house for over a year and realizing that I've graduated into a recession... hits different
Exactly my thoughts.
Well, maybe there's something to do with Brazil, we're frequently through rough times economic or socially but we don't lost our smile and laugh and made jokes about our own disgrace
the "saudade".
You're not wrong. Bossa is more often than not quite melancholic(brazilian doomer playlists are filled with it). It has much to do with it's root on samba, that although might seem festive on a first look, has more to it than that. It's melancholic and hopeful, bittersweet missing. That's a cultural thing Brazil and Portugal share.
Let me share some lyrics about that from Vinicius de Moraes, one of the composers of Garota de Ipanema:
It's better to be happy than sad
Happiness is the best thing there is
It's like light in our hearts
But to make a beautiful samba
You need a touch of sorrow
Or you won't make a samba
[...]
Making samba is not telling a joke
Those who do just don't get it
The good samba is sort of a prayer
Samba is sadness that swings
And sadness brings always the hope
Of one day being sad no more
[...]
Because samba was born in Bahia
And even if today it is white in it's poetry
It's heart is still much too black
(Samba da Benção)

I was already basically an adult when The Backyardigans first released in 2004, I graduated high school. In 2008 I had my daughter and put on the current children's shows for her and one of my favorites was this show. I would sing along to the songs all the time. So even though this show's demographic was for the generation after mine, I still remember watching it with my daughter so it is nostalgic for me. I probably remember it more than she does lol.
Ahh, I was wondering if I was just too old. Not adult, but 9, so the style wouldn’t have appealed to me at the time. I was saying “I would’ve loved to grow up with this!” thinking it was at first even more recent, but then the comments talked about growing up with it so I wondered when it was from. I’m glad I got into music anyway but the sheer variety of styles in this show seems tantalising.

The Backyardigans is all about imagination that can take place even at the comfort of your house with others, what makes this show so special is that they bring out this basis through music. Music and imagination, the both of best worlds.

Tiktok still sucks
Perhaps we treated tiktok too harshly
@@dewmilk7266 *perhaps*
Agreed. Excited for them to find all the bangers. Quite Partial to 'Huka Pele' and 'Steer baby, steer'
Mate, this is a brilliant video! This is the first I've seen of your channel and I'm definitely subscribing. It's clear to see your music knowledge is massive and the video is really well-produced and enjoyable. Great stuff!
I just rediscovered this video after a year and I love it so much. It brings back memories from last year

He really didn't need to go that hard for us, but he did.
@@AndyGoodstuff 😭😭 he really did that for us
As a Brazilian with extensive knowledge of bossa nova, I feel that note in the "castaways" motif should be an E and not an F. F works too, of course, but E *feels* more Bossa nova because Bossa nova loves their sevenths. ;)
Hard agree. Then it also forms a kind of micro-sequence when in the 7th bar it is actually F, now the 7th of the II chord. Children's choir be damned!
It was probably written as an E, but that's gonna be real hard for a kids choir to vibe on. If Hugo's right and it sequences to F on the Gm that little difference would add a notch of difficulty for locking in on the leading tone, which would be a good reason the recording ends up indeterminant.
I don't have extensive knowledge of Bossa Nova, but E definitely feels righter.
I saw this in a Facebook group I'm in, and listening to the original I can definitely hear the E on both the I and ii chords. So shout-out to that kids for nailing that!
yeah i think so too. maybe if they alternated like one having E and another one with an F?
This is why I love the Backyardigans show so much! This is why I made a little mini mixtape soundtrack’s over the years! I still have all the DVDs till this day!
My favorite personally if I had to pick just one genre, it would have to be what they did with Motown! I say that was really brilliant in my opinion!
By the way, I love this song! I didn’t even know that was a TickTock trend! The only TickTock trend that I know of, was when they did the song into the thick of it! Now that’s awesome!
Edit! Thanks a lot! Now you make me want to sing all The Backyardigans Songs in my collection! Y’all just made me sing along to castaways like crazy today!
The music in Backyardigans were all bangers to me! My oldest and I were obsessed with catching these episodes. I love how you broke this down. I always found the music so very sophisticated, and yet beautifully simple.
Now I don't feel so bad for the fact that the Backyardigans version of "row row row your boat" has been stuck in my head for like 15 years.
Being Brazilian, this analysis has been even more interesting for me. And the part that you've mentioned the "year lost" really touched me, because I lost my dad recently due to the coronavirus. Thanks for your videos!
:(
I’m feel sorry for you,
we know how it feels to lose someone
meus pêsamos caro amigo, que seu pai esteja em paz
Sorry for your loss, Igor😢 wish you all the best and hope you’re safe.
Sorry for your loss, mate. Hope your family's recovering well.
Sorry for your loss, glad u could still enjoy the video tho!
Great video, Adam! I hadn't heard of Castaways, but indeed it is a cool song and a great example of a masterpiece in songwriting!
it’s amazing how much effort they put into the soundtrack
I love it when the extra musical effort someone puts into a project gets recognised. Too often kids music is dumbed down, or music in a film doesn't suit the period, or the musicians in a shot aren't actually playing anything. So it's nice to see people care about that stuff
Backyardigans was the “ITS OOOOOOON” for my little sisters, but I can’t deny I loved it too lol
I like the pirate one that pablo sang but I cant remember what it was or what he was talking about
EDIT: Its A Pirate Says Arrr
For me it was the "I am professor Bug" "I Get whatever I want" and "Give me the remote" From Robot Rampage.
OH MY GOD
Thank you for using binary time signatures for Brazilian music! Most jazz musicians get it wrong
Really great vid as usual! Did anyone else notice the use of berimbau when Austin introduced himself shortly before the song? I think it’s really great that they introduce music from different cultures so early on!
Little known fact: the quote "songs make you feel thoughts" is now going to appear in every video by Adam Neely, each time attributed to a different musician
I hope so
lol
just misspelled this time lol
or Einstein.
.
Apparently Einstein is given attribution for many quotes which he never actually said.
I'm pretty sure he learned that sentence from Ben Levin
this is just 2015's obsession with Little Einsteins on repeat lol
He almost said it, but opted for the word "journey" rather than trip.
Pretty much yeah. Lmao
I personally find The Backyardigans to be better than Little Einsteins, though

Martina DaSilva! Her channel is linked in the description :)
She sings just like a Brazilian would sing bossa nova :)
she creeping me out and calming me at the same time
@@mariaeduarda-jq2yr im pretty sure she is an american brazillian, she has an amazing cover of garota de ipanema on her channel :)
I told the other musicians on a gig like 15 years ago that I was really digging the music from Backyardigans and they made fun of me relentlessly. Glad it’s getting some respect! 😀
lmao what a weird thing coming from musicians
Bet they would have thought differently if they didn’t know the source material
rejoice
This is so informative. Excellent thank you
