CORRECTION
I said that the Royal Variety Performance was at the London Palladium, when in fact it was at the Prince Of Wales Theatre. The Beatles had played the London Palladium on 13 October 1963 and were invited to perform at the Prince of Wales Theatre off Leicester Square on 4 November 1963 for the Royal Variety Show.

Great book about The Beatles just as they are becoming THE BEATLES. Great recommendation.
Your video is pretty much spot on. I have been a Beatles fan since I first saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964. In the years between then and now I have read the authorized books, and the unauthorized ones. And, all these years later I keep coming back to my copy of Love Me Do, The Beatles Progress by Michael Braun. It is a first printing. This is as close as the public will ever get to seeing what The Beatles were like before drugs, before Pepper, before the bitchiness at the end and beyond. There are lovely moments that Braun captured. John relaxing with his first wife, Cynthia, in a London apartment, and he was sincerely concerned about the band's sound at a previous evening's performance. It wasn't as good as he wanted it to be. And he also wasn't pleased with the way the band was sounding on some recordings, going so far as critique Paul, who he thought sounded like a woman on one song. The band was morphing from the raw energy of Hamburg and The Cavern into 'The Beatles' the world was hearing. This is a group of 4 young men who had no idea what lay before them. This book will lift the curtain on the public image of 'The Beatles.' As the Wizard said in Oz, 'don't look behind the curtain.' But I am glad I did.
I have quite a number of books on the Beatles, including a first edition of “A Hard Days Night” but not this one. I will have to correct that! Thanks! 😊

Thanks Sergio! I do recommend it - if you can find a copy of the paperback from the Sixties, that's a really lovely edition with lots of great photos. Otherwise you can get a copy of the 2019 reprint from the link in the description.
A nice reminder that I have this book up in the loft (also the Hunter Davies one). For a short period, I avidly collected paperback biographies of pop/rock musicians, and this was amongst them. Also amongst them, a number of books by George Tremlet - someone who seemed to have been churning out these books in the 70s. I haven't looked in that box for years.
That Sinatra interviews. Amazing! The scene with Harlan Ellison in the pool table, blows my mind. Gay Talese was a great writer.
Your video was first in my feed this morning. Never saw your channel before. Proof that Google is indeed 'listening in' I suppose.😆 As a reader with a 6-foot x 3-foot bookcase corpulent with just books on The Beatles, I'd say you're reviewing one of the jewels of the entire library. Unmatched in the corpus for raw sincerity.

Good video. You know what else is a great book about The Beatles? 'The Memoirs of Billy Shears.' Especially if you are into the LSD stories. Preludin is described as well, though in less detail.

@@thecharlesbliss Awesome! Be aware it is the very opposite of official Beatles narrative. It is up to the reader to decide what validity it has. Hey Ursula. You are correct - I always get those mixed up because The Beatles had played the Palladium on 13 October 1963 before their Royal Variety Show performance. I even went to the Palladium this year to see Bob Dylan and made the same mistake. I'll put a correction in the description box - thanks ✌

Could,t get a handle on it- I,was,stiffing,paper serviettes in the,acoustic holes, turning the monitor away with m;y foot- I finally,gave up and just played it on my mustang.
I heard,they.we’re havi,g,difficulty selling the Resonators- I have no idea,if,that,is the reason..
John and Paul werendeady for retirement by 1965 according to clips of them at the time.
And, of course, if u believe Paul is dead, then there are other stories that change thisnstory even more.
I just finished the audiobook for The Walrus Was Paul: The Great Beatles Death Clues by R. Gary Patterson. I don't buy the conspiracy theory, but it is fun looking out for the clues!
If Braun had such extensive and privileged access to the fab four why was his biography "not authorised" by them?
Hey Andy. Although Braun had access to The Beatles, they had no control over what he published, which is why he could include their more controversial or negative traits. Whereas the Davies book had to be sent to The Beatles, their manager and their families to be amended and approved before publication. Lennon's Aunt Mimi was irate about sections of the book, and forced him to change lots of it.

It's Ok , for it's time, you can't call it a biography, it was written over a short space of time during the Beatles early career. If your a proper Beatlenut you'll have already read it!.

I have to say, Hunter Davies did not sanitize The Beatles' story too much, really. There are all sorts of pretty terrible things discussed explicitly in that book.
Hey, thanks for your comment. I agree that there are still plenty of unflattering details in Davies's book, but the approval process certainly censured some important elements. I have two copies of the book - a first edition and a later reprint, and in a lengthy introduction in the reprint he talks about how his manuscript was sanitised by Aunt Mimi and Queenie Epstein. The next episode in the books series will discuss Davies's book, so keep an eye out as I will talk about this more in detail ✌

They were exploited by * everyone *: several interviewers in the first years (asntey toured the US) how it felt not me rich, and they looked nat one another, "We haven't been paid at all!". Legal protection for artists news poor, and they made zero dollars on franchises and little on their music.
There is an excellent book on this by Peter Doggett called You Never Give Me Your Money: The Battle for the Soul of The Beatles which is all about their royalties and the finances. I would strongly recommend it, but I'll also be doing a video review of it in the future! ✌️
