      Your comment made me laugh. My daughter (6) and I were foraging today as I am handing down the skill taught by my maternal ancestors for hundreds of years. We have tech however and we found a mushroom that popped up not as toxic but fatal. My daughter looked at me and asks,
      "Do we know who ate it first, so we could know that it's fatal?"

      It's all right jamada, mushrooms come from underground mycelium. The mycelial bed actually likes to be scratched and abused every once in a while; it stimulates new growth. A lot of mushroom farmers will rake their beds if they notice a lull in mushroom production, usually does the trick. Besides, when animals trudge through or heavy rains wash away mushrooms and damage the mycelium, all works out in the end.
      If you're worried about mycelial loss, spread some spores around! You can use baskets or mesh bags to let spores drift around as you hike, you can use hats and clothing for spore prints so when you wear them, spores can disperse with the wind. Just be careful not to breath in too many at once, it's not good for you.

    If you are a beginner, always forage with an experienced forager and one who is experienced in identifying the species. Also please do not eat anything that you’re unsure about. You can get extremely sick and in worst case they can be fatal. Also, please use your paring knife when plucking. Cut, not pluck, so they can grow back.

      @@LetsGoSomewhere87 many compares it to picking an apple from the branch. I do think pulling fruit bodies is totally fine unless you do it too brutally, which's hardly necessary when it comes to mushrooms.

      False. It's not a plant with a root. You can pluck away or use a knife.

      Yeah, you wont hurt the mushroom culture (mycellium) however if it's a patch you intend to return to to harvest more mushrooms in the same season, (the following week for example) then you'll do better if you cut the mushrooms' stems. Often, I return to mushroom stumps that I've cut to find new fruiting bodies sprouting around the old stump I've left behind. I don't believe this can happen when you rip a hole in the mycelium by plucking. Keep in mind the mycelium serves to feed all the fruiting bodies in the flush, so when you start ripping holes in it, it's like demolishing sections of roads in a city. The city can survive it, but it certainly hinders its productivity. That being said, if you're picking wild mushrooms to market, some varieties lose their value if the stems are cut. BC pine mushroom (Tricholoma magnivelare) is one, for example. But these push up from so deep in the ground, you often just find the top of the cap with the stem completely buried, which forces you to pop them up from underneath with a screwdriver anyhow.

    The very important thing to keep in mind is the area you live in the world; different places have different mushrooms 🍄. So many things I've read have said if it has gills, it's probably poisonous, especially if it's white and grows on the lawn. Hunting for edible woods mushrooms is scary if you aren't 100% sure it's safe, which is more difficult than you think when searching for identical photos online

    • @oddsquadred
      @oddsquadred 10 місяців тому

      idk about that there are lots of types of gills first off and second off alot of them are edible my rule would be there are no short cuts there is no hard and fast rules. learn the mushrooms in your area is good advice because there are so many

      Upper Northwestern corner of Washington state. I know ive stumbled across bunches of them over the years but never really knew the significance until recently. I find lots of boletes now, but ill be damned if i can find another king. Hoping this year will be the one! If i cant find any...shhhh...ill buy a couple if i have to haha. Ive heard they are really good eating? I found perfect lobsters and some beautiful chantrels this morning hiking around behind the place though.

    I used to hunt for Morels back in Missouri after springtime rains. Fried Morels are so delicious. Out in the sonoran desert, the only mushroom I've ever seen growing was a chicken of the forest. I don't know how, but it was growing.
    Also back in Missouri, we threw mushrooms under cars because they exploded after being run over. I think they were puffballs, can you tell me what they also could have been? They very well could have poofed green.

    I think that the morel in your video was identified properly but it grew the exact way that the false morel does. I’ve only ever encountered a few false morels. Usually early spring.

      @Subtle Nature If you cut them open then the morel will be hollow and a false one will not, so it's not too hard to tell the difference.
