Excellent video...I've owned and worn my 1016 for over 35 years...each reiteration of the Explorer has its own merits. I hope you wear and enjoy yours for decades to come! For me, why the 1016 is the best of them all, is as follows. It tells time and nothing else as it was originally designed to do as a Tool watch. The 1570 caliber has been proven to be one of Rolex's best due to its simple, robust, durable, reliable and accurate time keeping. The dial is where it shines. At a glance you can tell the time. The hands which are the most important feature, standout over the numerals and markers. From the 14270 and on, both the markers and numerals have grown in relation to the hands and so at a glance one sees them first over the hands. With an analog watch you don't even need the hour markers to tell time (eg the Movado Museum). The combination of hour markers stick and numerals is what can take it to from the Field to the Ballroom. A classic in both environments. The minute hand actually touches the minute markers!! Since the 1016, the only other Explorer where the minute hand touches the minute markers is the new 40mm version. Huh?! why not the 36mm??? Finally, the Acrylic crystal. For this watch to truly maintain its roots you should not fear taking it anywhere. I have worn my 1016 doing everything from obstacle races, ice hockey, skiing, tobogganing, swimming...with no fear of breaking the sapphire. Truly the G-Shock of mechanical watches. There is one negative in that the Tritium no longer glows, but with the matte black dial and the white markers and hands any bit of light is caught and reflected....Anyway there is no disputing the beauty of all the Explorers and everyone that owns any version of it appreciates it for what it is!
Just watched your other video...Well done...I will admit if i was going to buy a Second Explorer it would be the 114270 for all the same reasons you have discussed. I guess i could live with the sapphire crystal but would be tough to get use to the "no lug-hole" case ... I love to change my straps especially since i wear it doing everything and the NATO is much better to be active in...the only thing i don't like is the engraved rehaut ... its just a bit much and serves no purpose ... Again well done videos and wear and enjoy it!!

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
about the dial, i've noticed on my 224270 that in low light/dark the indices still 'pop' even when uncharged. i think the contrast between dial and indices/hands is perfectly thought out.
I wasn't looking into the Explorer 1 models until recently. I always expected a Rolex to be a DJ or a Sub/Gmt, which is what I have. But since I was offered one from my AD, I got the new 40. I had to adjust to it because the 1st center link bracelet flares out a bit from the case, making it seem bigger. I measured the case, and got less than 40mm diameter. After wearing it for a couple of days, it began to look better on my 6.5 wrist. and the more I look at it, the more the dial grows on me. I prefer the glossy black dial, and the white gold markers. As simple as its design, these make it pop a bit more and make it classy. I dint know the 36m 3,6,9 did not glow...learned something new! thank you

With just a couple of tweaks, the Railmaster 2504/2804 could be a game changer. If it had a broad arrow hour handset and a better bracelet clasp…could you imagine?…Man, that’s a great watch….enjoy yours!

That Datejust-Explorer looks dope. It's perfect for my taste for balanced asymmetry. That being said, the Explorer for me is "brutal legibility and simplicity", which also means no date.

Symmetry = same measurements Asymmetry = not same measurements With balance, I mean the visual kind: The elements of the design may be different, but they have the same visual "weight". In this case, the date window takes place of a number. It's a smaller element, but it's more detailed. On top of that, the triangle at the top provides an anchor point for the eyes so they're 100% certain which way is up. This is entirely subjective, it's perfectly valid if you don't see it that way. But do you now understand what I meant?
A classic Rolex Explorer needs to be 36 mm, just ask these British gentlemen, author Ian Fleming, zoologist Sir David Attenborough and watch maker Roger W. Smith. 2:58 that rehaut inscribed with Rolex Rolex Rolex just doesn't look good
