As a youth, over 60 years ago, my mate and I would boyishly collect and raise the almost indestructible pond flatworms, and do regeneration experiments on them. Now, at 80, my interest in the natural sciences continues (though, alas, my hands are now too unsteady to go chopping up flatworms, so I have had to adopt a more kindly attitude toward them and other tiny creatures !😊) so, thanks to you and your colleague for all your interesting and informative posts. primitive mobile chordates, such as the cambrian Pikaia or the larvae of modern tunicates were/are actually fairly worm-like; their main differentiating feature being that they have the beginnings of cephalization and a cartilage-reinforced nerve cord.
It depends if you consider things like lancelets or Pikaia "worms."

Worms of some sort were obviously the ancestors of chordates, arthropods and mollusks. Before you can have limbs, shells, skeletons, or even a brain, you've got to have a food tube.
