“Just crimp down on it….. like a crimpy thing” - Pete Whittaker, 2022 Love this more chilled video style, made me want to get outdoor bouldering again!
This is great content. Pete is humble and humorous as always. It’s great to watch climbers that you respect struggling and projecting, rather than just crushing all the time. I can’t believe that Pete doesn’t have a brush on him 24/7 (let alone not having one in his climbing bag)!
My family were with Johnny a few years back at the Plantation and we had a look at Victorian Overmantel..he chatted through how to do it..I found it impossible..he was typically modest and said it just suited him..legend!
"Pebble is off!!" Haha that was a great moment. I'm not a rock climber but you really inspire me to keep challenging myself in my disciplines and interests! Thank you for that!
this is one of my favorite bouldering videos i have ever seen. your passion for a short, few move problem is infectious. hard bouldering isn't always tall or glamorous.
Knew that pebble was coming off first try. I need to show this to my son as Victorian overmantle is on his list. Although I think when he looked at it in person is scared him of a little. Great send Pete!
What a happy coincidence! I'm trying to make a first ascent on a similar problem here in east Finland. The starting position the angle and spacing of crimps looks the same too. I think I have to use that "I think I have a second to switch left hand into a palm" -beta next time on the project! 🤩
This seems like a magical place. As somebody who has only recently gotten into gym climbing, I would absolutely love to just watch all these people bouldering outdoors. (Who am I kidding, I would totally bring my shoes and make a fool of myself, but even just watching would be amazing.)
That crowd behind you at the end! I have been bouldering in the Dales and went to Plantation for the first time recently. The crowds were a big surprise
It'd be a real nice video if Magnus is ever in the UK again to show him around where your outdoor career sort of started. You guys just have the best chemistry in videos. Nice video this as well Pete!
Would love to see Magnus there with you one day! Fun video hehe you looked like Gollum making funny faces crawling up that boulder but props you finaly did it! ;D
Yo Pete, have you considered climbing on Staffin slips on Skye, it state's on UKC as the some of the best crack climbing in Britain! Worth a visit before the midge session starts 😅 +Gray Panther, is outstanding!
Crackin vid as always. I'm planning on my first outdoor bouldering trip next week and stanage was on the shortlist, the sheer number of people you can see at the end though. Yikes. I don't want that many people around to see me being bad. :(
We've actually got a pretty similar although easier boulder at our gym. It's like 6c and I've scraped my ankle already at least 4 times trying to send it.
I don’t know this to be 100% true but I heard years ago that a climber called Paul higginson did the move into the press position on Victorian overmantle completely, footless only putting a foot on when he’d gone with hands into the higher hold There may even be a photo of him on it in the original rockfax peak bouldering guide
I'd love to hear of any other ascents of Victorian Overmantle 🙂
Joe Picelli did the 2nd ascent I believe...
Ondra, no hands.
Had to go on the hunt for footage of Toru doing it. Funny to end up finding it, only for Pete to be the one behind the camera!
@@spanktheplum do you have a link? Never been able to find it before
LINK US PLZ!
I totally LOLled when Petes whole plan culminated around pebble and then:”Pebble is off!” 😂❤️
Yeah, right after it spanked him in the face!
Me too!!!!! 😂😂😂

Love this more chilled video style, made me want to get outdoor bouldering again!
'This is the crucial hold'
[ten seconds later]
'Didn't need that hold anyway..'
Pete's ability to make climbing look painful through facial expressions is unrivalled
13:46 very impressive one finger mantle, Pete!!
Cue Victorian Overmantle suddenly becoming the most popular climb in the Peak 😂
Yeah. Can't see that happening! Help the young will see a spike though :)
That climb looks so gross! First thought that came to mind was a ripped ankle.
XD
I went there today and it's safe to say there is no way I can attempt it 😂 fun to see it though!
I love that in the spirit of a solo Pete video, the cameraperson makes him carry ALL of the crash pads between areas.
Tbf, camera kit is pretty heavy

The quality of the wideboyz videos have improved so much lately! Loving watching you guys, keep it up!
this is one of my favorite bouldering videos i have ever seen. your passion for a short, few move problem is infectious. hard bouldering isn't always tall or glamorous.
I can’t believe How much I enjoy watching this process of problem solving. The struggle is real
This is something I love about climbing. The rock never changes and you can always go back to see your progression.
"The rock never changes" --> Except when the pebble comes off. 🤣
Rock can change if too many climb it
Knew that pebble was coming off first try. I need to show this to my son as Victorian overmantle is on his list. Although I think when he looked at it in person is scared him of a little. Great send Pete!
And he just says "here we go" when he finally sends it, you're a legend pete
RIP Pebble hold. Great video always a good day when you boys post.
Poor pebble waited a million years for it's moment
“Crimp down on it like an absolute………..crimpy thing” my sentiments exactly 👏🏻👏🏻
Pete on V7(7a+): "Total warm up!"
Me: "TSAAAA! TSAAAAAAA!!!!"
It's nice to see that maximum effort at the end. I could tell that you were not going to give up.
Love this kind of video!

I dont know why, but im smiling the whole Time watching his Videos. I Love his humor 😂😂
Damn that was a battle. rip thumb pebble
13:29 muttering to himself, "... and just frickin' crimp down on it, like an absolute... crimpy thing" xD
This seems like a magical place. As somebody who has only recently gotten into gym climbing, I would absolutely love to just watch all these people bouldering outdoors. (Who am I kidding, I would totally bring my shoes and make a fool of myself, but even just watching would be amazing.)
The Peak District and Gritstone is very nice 🙂
that was a nice video...very "pure" bouldering
I'm a V7 gym only climber - this is really inspiring me to try some outdoor stuff! Thanks Wide Boyz
That crowd behind you at the end! I have been bouldering in the Dales and went to Plantation for the first time recently. The crowds were a big surprise
One of the busiest days at the plantation I've ever seen
Haha that was us! A university mountaineering club trip to the Peak District! Had a lovely group photo with Pete:)
This has such a strong lightly-hungover-sunday-got-nothing-better-to-do-wanna-go-bouldering? vibe.
I love it.
... and fricking crimp down on it like ... an absolute [2 secs] crimpy thing 😄
nice one Pete, far more impressive than joker
"Pebble's off" was the funniest shit XD
Great video! It’s cool to see you tackle an old nemesis
Pete's been rocking over since a youth!!
4:35 respect to the camera man for watching, my guy!
It would have been rude to just watch him struggle without getting involved 😂
Amazing effort on adding a new variant, I was proper willing you to top out, well done :)
More of this please, love it
My knee popped just by looking at this. Crazy Mantle!
Hell Yeah! Well done, congrats! 👏
I love the instrumentals in the background!
I'm sure your producer would appreciate being credited in the comments!
Welp, there's my weekly reminder that I don't try NEARLY hard enough!
Loved watching the progression. I could definitely imagine what you were feeling on those last couple tugs…
That was most enjoyable, really enjoy your commentary
I wish I could just summon my crash pads like Pete...
The Victorian Overmantle looks like my personal hell
Good effort Pete!
Great push, congrats 💪
mad how difficult overmantle must be if one of the gritstone aficionados fought so hard with it.
Any videos with Dawes doing it online?
Bet Johnny hopped up it 😅
@@WideBoyz you went wrong right from the start Pete by not doing it in chrome leggings.
@@WideBoyz in a tweed jacket nonetheless 🤔
@@WideBoyz he was the master, you did good
Johnny did it on top rope but he didn't use his hands!
It'd be a real nice video if Magnus is ever in the UK again to show him around where your outdoor career sort of started. You guys just have the best chemistry in videos.
Nice video this as well Pete!
Nice video my bro!!
Would love to see Magnus there with you one day! Fun video hehe you looked like Gollum making funny faces crawling up that boulder but props you finaly did it! ;D
I laughed so hard when the pebble fell off 😂😂
Great film: how was it not raining!!! I bagged off Burbage today and went for a MTB ride instead ! #wealllovethepeaklocalweather
What a graceful sport.
Beautiful place! Thx for sharing!
So relaxing to watch! Love it! Keep Crushing
The machine Pete.
Loved this!
Yo Pete, have you considered climbing on Staffin slips on Skye, it state's on UKC as the some of the best crack climbing in Britain! Worth a visit before the midge session starts 😅 +Gray Panther, is outstanding!
Petition for the IFSC to set a v10 mantle at the next comp pls
hearing the word “layback” from pete is so unheard of lol
Bravo Pete.
Great informative video, thanks.
Good effort mate!
Crackin vid as always.
I'm planning on my first outdoor bouldering trip next week and stanage was on the shortlist, the sheer number of people you can see at the end though. Yikes. I don't want that many people around to see me being bad. :(
That was honestly the busiest I've ever seen stanage plantation. There are lots of pleasant spots around the Peak District which are quieter though 🙂
Most climbers are chilled enough to want to see you succeed. None of them are going to judge you for flailing about on easy stuff.
@@MartinBentley this a hundredfold. Climbing is a beautifully personal competition.
I laughed for a good 20 seconds when that pebble fell!
Love a good power spot
That was awesome, those faces 😂 Great work Pete
So many people on the boulders behind him and some many brushes there as wellhaha
I'd say a knee pad helps you get through the pain and carry on with a kneebar. A palm glove massively aids in how much your palm sticks to the rock.
Congrats! Looks tricky.
“Is that legit?”
No. That would be a new route.
A bmc issue
Nice work, nice work :-)
Singing rock makes ankle protectors that might help that sock wrap stay in place, lol
Awesome 👍
good effort!
Same boulder, same holds, no modifications. It's legit.
🙌
Crimp out left and heel not part of my method but so what. Beta spec grades interesting navel gazing though..
According to Ned Feehally's Top Mantelshelves it should be Ned Zeppelin at the Roaches next...
Someone has had a look recently ,seen a bit of chalk on it. We used to always say it was possible but never thought it would get done.
on Victorian Overmantle, maybe use TC Pros for ankle protection?
Pete and a funny shaped hood, name a better combo.
Not different enough to be a new line, so I'd say totally fine. New beta could mean lower grade, but that still looked hard as hell.
We've actually got a pretty similar although easier boulder at our gym. It's like 6c and I've scraped my ankle already at least 4 times trying to send it.
Now call Adam Ondra to flash it.
I'd like to see him try!

My hamstring is sore from watching this
Ohhhh ya
what a send!
The pebble made me laugh so hard xD
Pete's beta: i found a nonexistent hold.
Surely Ned must have done it at some point? Hard mantels look like they have the same progress to effort ratio as offwidths!
He must have surely!
I’m happy I can watch other people suffer on stuff like this and don’t have to do it on my own.
Everyone's talking about Victorian Overmantle part when I came here to to see people losing it because of the "gloves vs kneepads" can of worms 😂
Bish bash bosh…we’ll done, Pete!
If something makes it easer, you should know- it's legit!
1960’s Russian cosmo naught fashion is a thing now? Great video btw.
Great determination and application- can the elevator music please
Is that not the best part?! 😂
Not one part of me wants to ever touch that mantle😂
