This was very helpful and practical. I say that I'm a "developing professional artist." I do not have to rely on it for a living, which is both good and bad. I've sold a few of my pieces through art shows. I'd like to sell prints online too. I'm also involved in selling vintage collectibles online and in a booth that I rent. This takes up way too much of my time and is not very profitable, so as much as I love it, I'm moving towards getting out of it....selling off my stuff, so I can devote myself more to my art, which is something I love more. I really like the way you explained your time with your pie 🥧 and interested in seeing what you may have done since this vid was 4 years ago. Thanks much!
Thanks for the comment! I have been busy since but mostly making videos here and on Patreon. It's never easy to design your own working day and know where to put your efforts as you're aware. Where possible, do what makes you happiest and feel most productive.
Thank you so much for a wealth of information that I will treasure as I journey, on my road as an up and coming professional artist. I find it difficult, to figure out the pricing of my pastel paintings. So, I am grateful for your video! I know it will serve as a helpful tool in figuring out pricing and as a time management tool!🙏🏽
You're welcome. These are all the things I struggled with too and that's what inspired the videos. I have another about pricing that might be helpful ua-cam.com/video/Vr7JhNdGfNE/v-deo.html
Glad you found it helpful. I'm sure this journey looks different for every artist as you just have to make some of it up and search out the opportunities. Good luck!
Thank you for the advice and a great to put it in a visual way to have a better sense of what is need to become a profesional. I really like your teaching approach.
Emma, this was so well done! Truly! Your presentation is professional, clear, and easy to grasp. Thank you so very much. I wish for you all the best and much success--and more time to paint!
Thank You So Much ! Very Interesting. I Learned Very Fast The Harsh Reality That Professional Artists Spend Less Time Painting and More Time Marketing !
Thank you Emma, you have exceeded all my expectations... Again..! ) I really enjoy to see your expert personality that can be in such good combination with your artistic nature! And of course, such great explanation of the time proportions is just perfect. P.S. I am sure that 90% of people can not really understand how valuable this information is, but it can prevent them from so many troubles...
Thank u for all the great advice! I'm an Art teacher but I've always wanted to use my art skills to become a professional artist. Your art is beautiful! I'll keep watching as I enjoy your work! Donna from US
Wow! You need more hours in the day! I for one appreciate every reply you have given me, as I know it must eat into your time. I am just learning to use pastels, so no intentions of going professional, but love watching and learning from you......thanks Emma x Ps....don’t reply......you don’t have time! X
Thank you so much for doing this: I am wanting to 'go pro' myself, and have just started to build myself up on Facebook as a starting point. This has been very informative and helpful, and has given me some idea of direction Thank you!
That would be fantastically helpful, because I have absolutely no idea! I have to say, I think your work is stunning and your videos are incredibly informative. 😊
Hallo Emma, thank you for so wonderful explanation. I have a question, I have noticed that you spent much time painting and making things related to art. So I guess you had no other job and income. I had such problem and my situation was so bad that finally I could not afford any art materials not to mention costs of living. It was all happened after my "divorce". So I have moved to another country, it took me a few years to learn a language and find a job completely not related with art. But... now I can afford art materials and I collect them, because finally I can and I can find also a little bit time to make art. So it thought me that money makes money. Without a job (funds) you can not move forward. Best wishes for you. You are one of a few on YT who really teach something valuable.
Thanks for your message. It's very true that without any money you will find it hard to progress. My partner is a musician and when I first met him and my art was not going anywhere yet I joined his band for a while to make some money. Music is another passion but more a hobby. I was lucky to have another option to jump into for a short time and the money allowed me to start framing my work and exhibiting. Before it was impossible as I wasn't earning enough to get by never mind frame artwork. So yes you have to do whatever you need to do and keep pushing forward. I spent about 5 years totally broke playing music at weddings at the weekend, and working on my art during the week. It can take time and I was lucky to be able to devote everything to it.
Do you include framing in your prices? Or do you sell without a frame? Framing is very expensive and could be a customer preference in color and style. Do you offer that option, or do you let the customer get your exquisite artwork framed themselves?
Hi, I don't include framing in my cost. When I lived close to my local framer sometimes I would arrange that too and add to their total, but not these days. Most of my work gets posted unframed and I'm happy to guide the client in the framing process on their side. Framing is expensive but worth every penny. Having made some frames it's laborious and skilled work which I'm happy to pay someone else to do!
Hi Emma! Just one quick question: when you started your journey by practicing, what kind of paper did you use? I'm just wondering because I'm going to get a couple of basic stuff to start painting in pastels... But I also know that my first paintings will suck haha, so I dont wanna spend on a high quality paper right from the beginning... I might be approaching the whole thing wrong and perhaps I should just get the high quality paper right away, what do you think?
To be honest paper is a pretty vital part to the mix as each one behaves differently and you'll probably have a preference based on your style. Have a look at this sample pack. I recommend as you can cheaply try several papers and then decide which one you want more of. I started on cheaper and it limited me in the beginning. www.jacksonsart.com/sanded-pastel-paper-comparison-pack-of-7-quarter-sheets?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=087408522c31eeb1f982bc0eaf81d35f
That's a good question Peggy! While you want the world to see your best portfolio of work, it's only possible to get there through experience and actually doing. My next video is going to talk about pricing and how that can evolve with you as you gain experience and become more consistent. You just got to go for it really and learn on the job! But I'll try and share some tips in my next video that might help! :-)
Haha! I fit work around life sometimes and life around work sometimes. Hopefully there is balance! These pies represent the time I devote to work I suppose, there are other pies :-)
Hello, I am Spanish, I don't speak inglish. I see you videos all. But I don't understand 😭😭 Can you translate you film, please?? O write subtitles. Thank 😘
