Garden at the heart of the home is always a win. Opening the garage space to the garden for big parties is big-brained. Having windows in the baths so your party guests can see you bathe is galaxy-brained.
I was so confused by your North South sun direction references until I realized that in the Southern hemisphere the South side of the house gets shade and the North side sees sun, especially in the winter.
Constraints make for elegant and in this case, beautiful, solutions. You know your business.
The thing I love about Pretty House 🥰 is that the moves Andrew / AMA are making are so logical that it makes me feel like I can do it myself, however in practice they’re incredibly sophisticated in their resolution and execution. AMA are making houses for New Modern Australia, love it!
Really like the option of opening the garage on both ends. Makes for a great breeze way etc. The sunken bath is also a very good idea. I feel the front door would benefit from having some form of canopy to protect people entering the house from rain.
I would definitely come up with more suitable landscaping etc to hide the red brick flats at the rear of this property. That is, landscaping or some form of screens that still allow for the importance of not blocking out the north light. I feel more thought was needed to ensure that the master bedroom’s view wasn’t impacted on by the flats and the residents car park. Food for thought.
I always believe that codes exist for us to be safe as well as to respect everyone else's sake that involves within the whole built environment. The design process and execution of the Lang House are well thought despite the stringent constraints, plus the integration of context patterns of the neighborhood. I also love the design and detail of the island counter of the kitchen. Well done AMA. 🌟
I can't begin to tell you how much I love and adore so many of your solutions ... your take on a kitchen island is superb, love that privacy glass, the various forms that are repeated, the rigorousness which leads to such an elegant proportion: BRAVISSIMI!!!

Let me say I absolutely love your channel and think it is a so informative, energetic and good natured. I am an artist (painter) and designed an open format contemporary home using a steel structural cage shapes to get the space right for our needs. I wish you were around 20 years back because your projects, practical thinking and holistic approach would have been so influential in my decision making. Bravo guys!

It's incredible! I love how you've hidden the laundry upstairs (I really want one hehe) along with all the equipment. So practical, which is important when you have kids. I love the way you've detailed every last thing and how it all slots together to make a cohesive building that's going to be a joy to live in on so many levels. I hope I can be as successful at integrating every last thing as you are. It's an inspiring house!

Oh it’s been said before. It’s now a given. It’s also given that Andrew designs bathrooms so he can show himself to the neighbours.
Gorgeous response to brief and planning constraints. That's the challenge in cities and it makes for a wonderful design process. Love the garage and the entry sleeper as the most novel and playful elements. (and here I am chuffed to see that my own design thinking/process has some kind of morphic resonance with the things Andrew has done here (curves, stairs, levels and seating).
Really like the master bath window slider, opening window in the kids room, perforated stairs, garage pass thru (and no back yard shed), curving island. The garage floor also looks like a good and less expensive floor than doing an entire concrete pour. Great material palette.
Bravo, a very thoughtful and beautifully detailed house. Sometime we do best when we are under sever constrains.
Looks great. I have some sympathy for the planning constraints which are far less onerous than what we have in Canada, but your response to those constrains are both imaginative and intelligent.

Uwu! Great house. Designing with so many constraints not only from the characteristics of the site, but also city codes is certainly a challenge, and shows when there´s a good designer behind every decision. AMA mastered it, that's what I like most about the firm, how they manage to magnificently deal with all the restrictive conditions of the site, and I focus on that when I study their houses because it´s something I´m challenged in my everyday work
I love patios. They are definitely a must for narrow sites, and always a beautiful way to connect and articulate spaces
And on a side note, I need a workstation hidden in my living room like this one!

This family can only thrive in this build ….it’s so satisfyingly today and tomorrow….
Too often codes are treated like constraints to be fought or circumvented. Here it sounds like the objectives and requirements of the code were considered, understood, and integrated into the design process. Well done and bravo to the landowner, who was presumably willing to work with you and with the code, instead of pushing for a specific, predetermined , ‘dream’ outcome.
And also the planning requirements made sense and guarantee quality of living for the neighbours. You'd want to take them into account even if not legally bound to

Brilliant!!! We seem to have an issue here in the UK where buildings that are subjectively ugly are going to be refused planning permission. No one has even considered to define 'beauty' or 'ugly' as objective terms and continue with the subjective meanings. Which naturally results in the demolition (very unsustainable) of perfectly good and objectively beautiful buildings, on the personal whim of a few visually illiterate people, who cannot tell the difference between subjective and objective beauty :-(

No. It’s Lang/Leng/Liang. There is no standard spelling of Cantonese which in itself full of regional accents

The ridged translucent windows in the parents' bathroom and kids bedroom look so thin when slid open! What are they made of and how do they maintain insulation? (Also, this looks great! I can imagine Andrew's pride)

When you drive around Canberra you can sometimes see the shape of the territory plan in the buildings. I think it can be made to work really well, I feel like site constraints can be gifts to the designer. But sometimes you see a house that has been built to constraints but not really designed to them and that can be pretty clunky.

its a lovely house Andrew. I think that side/central courtyards are the true secrets to making beautiful homes
On a principled level, I hate that planning bureaucrats dictated so much of the design of this house. You made the best of it, though, with some lovely, playful touches. The sunken in bath, especially 👌
The one aspect that isn't my aesthetic is the concrete that runs the bottom floor. The warmth of the wood joinery rescues things a bit, but it looks so cold. Whenever I see exposed concrete in an otherwise luxurious home it feels eerily like being in a finely detailed carpark or prison cell.
nice house. what's the climate like? you mentioned sustainability and solar/thermal design frequently, is the garage inside the main house envelope?
It’s pretty much its own volume but everything is thermally sealed and insulated

I love the exterior facade and the mix of concrete and wood finishes inside, just one question, with that ground floor bathroom, how do you guys deal with the vapour(condensation) having no natural ventilation, is there a mechanical ventilation system?
