I finally bought one... I avoided them for a long time but as you get older you no longer care about others opinions. It's a boonie hat by Mountain Hardwear and I can't find another pic of it anywhere online - solid beige with vents, the brim is 3 inches on side, and 4 front and back, I bought it off poshmark for $25. I should have bought one years ago, really. Great hat for humid summers. Your collection is fantastic!
I haven't seen that site before. I'll check them out 🙏
Hello Sir,
I’m so lucky to saw your Vid. I really like your collections . I lost my only Boonie hat which I really like and my only one, I prefer Boonie hat than a baseball cap. Thank you thank you so much for showing me all you boonie hat . I really appreciate Sir. I hope I can find one M90 Boonie hat and others too.
Yesterday for “fun” I decided to change a Rothco tiger stripe boonie into a short brim. 1.5 hours, 136 hand stitches and a sore left hand later, it was done. I think it will be a favorite.
Team Short Brim Boonie! LET'S GO!!
Ok, 136 stitches was an estimate. I just did an actual count and it was 124, so I should quit whining haha. But my hand is still sore haha.
Boonies that were issued to the Australian army during their involvement in the war in Vietnam were called giggle hats by the troops. My late brother in law was with the 7th RAR there.
Aaaaah, OK cool. So more of a nickname from the lads with them. That's a cool details. Cheers buddy.
I'm a year late to this video, but I'de say my favorite boonie is my first one. I bought a genuine vintage USGI M81 Woodland boonie for $25 off Ebay, showed up to the house over a week later wrapped in a Walmart shopping bag. I too have a huge head so finding a genuine vintage boonie in my size was like striking gold. It fits perfect, I wear it almost every day I leave the house even if it's not sunny. The brim is nice and firm from weather exposure and sweat drying. I pretty much love everything about this hat and I get an occasional look from older guys who like my father wore this hat during their service. I jsut purchased the same UF Pro boonie but in Flecktarn since I'm a US/German dual citizen, it should arrive sometime next week.
Oh nice. I'd love to hear your thoughts when you flecktarn hat arrived
@@MoorlanderEDC Sure thing! I have original 90s German flecktarn field shirt and waders so I'll compare the quality and color to those.
@@MoorlanderEDC I also have my original USGI M81 boonie that I can send pics of next to other original USGI woodland gear.
I like too the Babylon Miles
Sir ,so nice the UF Pro version2. Thank you
You're more than welcome. Such an epic Boonie hat
Sir , on UF Pro What specific color you have Because I’m not sure if it is Slocam or vegetation or the Cc. Thank you
Thanks for the notice🤜🏻🤛🏻 i have the Pentagon Babylon for a long time, but the one i love and wear, is the UF pro Striker ❤️ But you cant wear it in german cities🙈 in Poland it is possible 😆
Nice outakes! Very enjoyable.
Carcajou Tactical makes some really nice hats. Good Canadian company with a couple different styles to choose from.
I'll make sure to check them out thank you 🤙
Hello mate, I was inspired to buy a boonie style hat after watching this video. I tried to get a Pentagon Babylon and a Helikon Tex but they are out of stock at many UK sites. I then came across the 5.11 boonie hat. As I own a number of 5.11 Tactical products, I was confident that the quality would be good. I just took delivery of their boonie hat in black multi-cam. It really is a nice hat. You need one in your collection. All the best. 😊
Ever since I was a kid I always appreciated the boonie hat, but even more so after having served in the US military. As you pointed out, the USGI boonies do have a much larger brim, and I have always preferred the shorter version like that of the British military boonie. As an archer, I've modified and shortened the brims of all my vintage US issued camo boonies so as to not interfere with the bowstring when at full draw. Outstanding collection, mate!
Thanks for watching. The boonie is the best all round hat. I think as well they suit my large head. I've never found baseball hats fit me. I hope you're well, all my best
Lost my Helikon CPU green bucket hat in Japan last fall on a boat. I keep looking for replacement but always short of supply for some reason. Thanks for the great reviews
Appreciate the walk through on these. Some really thoughtful design on some of them! Never knew they were called Boonie hats... I remember kids wearing bucket hats a lot in the 90s in high school
Bucket hats for life buddy ❤️
up till yesterday boonie hats (or fishing hats, i just lumped them all together) i just knew from scenes of ghetto dealers and as being a fashion accessory that needs to go.
But, i just ordered a boonie today. what led me to it was a need for a no-nonsense work hat - i work outdoors and now with all the sun, dust and all kinds of crap flying around i want something that'd keep my had cool and clean, and something i can just wash. originally i had something like a baseball cap with a back flap in mind, but research took me over bucket hats into boonie hats.
looking forward to using it at work, and perhaps also off work. let's see how it works out.
I wear a Army surplus when hunting deer hunting in October early November before the temperature drops down too much. Does a great job of keeping the sun out of my eyes with it's broad brim.
Hi Ron. I'd love to come hunting with you. They are a great type of hat for lots of occasions. Stay well and safe sir
Where can I hunt deer in the UK too?
@@jooceypaleork2703 there's some great places in Scotland and Wales to go stalking deer. A lot of farmers will allow you to hunt on their land as long as you share your quary. I'd love to do a stalk in the Highlands
Sorry buddy. Completely misread your message. Ron here is State side so has a few more freedoms on the land of the people, for the people 👍
@@MoorlanderEDCSorry I guess I should of of point out that I'm from Indiana one mile from the southern tip of lake Michigan for your other followers. We are blessed with a abundant number of wildlife and fishing. Our deer hunting season starts October 1 and ends on the first Sunday of January. I hunt with a cross bow, bolt action rifle, slug gun,or muzzleloader. I mostly hunt from a 15 ft.ladder stand or ground blind. Thanks for clearing it up with your other follower wouldn't want anyone thinking I'm poaching.
You have a great collection! I had a large collection when I was a kid but as I grew up, so did my head. 😂 I just started collecting them again and I forgot how much I enjoyed these hats. The boonie/bucket hat I enjoyed the most was the Russian M45 style. They're adjustable on the back and they have material on top of the head to add my foliage and such. I got mine from a place called Russian Cold Camo when they were still in business, I definitely recommend this style and the camo patterns are just too cool to pass up. I do like how the CPU Hat has the inner sweat band. The USMC issued boonies have this as well and also around the inner lining. I have to say it's hard to choose which one I like from your collection. I can't deny that Swedish M90 pattern is a vibe on its own. But that CPU Hat is quite nice. I'm eyeing to get my next boonie at Varusteleka in a Finnish camo pattern.
Very nice video, I had brought a boonie hat in an Army surplus store in the UK a decade ago and I have recently started wearing it for my walks. I now want to start a collection and very informative video
I don't tend to wear camo but I do like a bucket hat and I also have a massive head (62cm!).
My current favourite is a Carhartt WIP Script Bucket Hat size L/XL. Mines in dark blue but other colours are available, including some camo. It's not military spec but is good quality, lined and feels very solid.
I think every photo of me as a nipper in the 80s I had that classic bucket hat. It's a British institution 😉 I'll check out the Carhartt
I have one of those UF Pro hats. Expensive for a bucket / boonie hat but definitely worth the price. VERY high quality materials & construction. Would definitely recommend.
I've had mine on whilst away and it's 100% worth the price. On a weird note. The material dries really well if you're the type that likes to wear a hat whilst in and out of a pool 😅 You have to keep that head protected
That's how UF Pro clothing goes. It's top of the line but expensive.
Forgot to say, the Swedish camo is also a winner 👍
I go for a bigger size as sometime tuck the sides back in to make a improvised Baseball cap. I've got to say Cammo is def a Art form.
Firstly, love the name 🤣 Secondly, like the idea with the baseball cap. I'll try that out 👍 stay well buddy
Recently purchased a military bush hat from Cadet Direct in East Sussex that is a short brimmed hat. Excellent company to order from and highly recommend them. Also enjoyed your review!
Thanks for the heads up Mike. I'll check these out 👍
I love boonie hats, been wearing them since the early eighties, Vietnam style, short brim with low profile is my preference, really like that British boonie and the Aussie giggle boonie, I’m going to look on my military surplus sites for that M90, really like that camo, my collection of boonies are USGI, I have all shapes and brim styles, I like the wider brims when I’m on the river
Glad to hear you enjoyed it Alan. Say well buddy
The shorter brimmed boonie hats are sniper boonies. The purpose for them is better visibility.
You learn something new every day 😅 Although the British bucket hat always had a shorter brim if memory serves. Either way, I'm definitely a short brim kinda guy
I have a boonie, with a large brim for hiding under in public view.
Allways liked boonies, havent worn one in years, found my old one that i used on festivals but wanted something new, got the uf pro in german "flecktarn" camo and its the best hat i came across. Also ordered a Helikon tex cpu in black if camo is a bit overdressed haha. Nice collection you have, very informative video:)
Thanks PP, the boonie really is a timeless classic for sure spanning so many generations. Thanks for watching buddy
Yes. That`s it. I like boonies with short brims but I haven`t it found it. Thank you for the tip. Great review . Thank you
You are so welcome!
I bought my first boonie hat its from a guy who made camo ones for the Bulgarian army but he used a kind of German camo its a light camo colour but id rather have a smaller brim and theres no vents on it but i do like it and im.on the lookout for a smaller brim camo one i do like camo clothing ,i enjoyed your collection of hats and info on them as i didn't know a lot about them im in Dublin Ireland so don't get much sun sadly but i go on holidays to Greece so next time ill bring it again thanks
My pleasure buddy. I'll definitely make a follow up to this in the summer. It's been very popular
Surprised you didn't have a Tilley hat in your lineup. T3 are a classic. Cheers.
I'll add it to the list 🤙
I'll add it to the list 🤙
Informative and well done . Been looking at the Pentagon short brim for a couple of weeks, this vid helped out....
You're more than welcome Ken. Always great to hear I've helped. The Pentagon hat is amazing too... I'd love to hear your thoughts when yours arrives 👍
@@MoorlanderEDC I can do that...I'm out in California, hats come from the UK so their maybe some additional cost to consider.Im going to see what eBay has to offer....
I’d love a review of the pentagon kalahari! I want a boonie but would also really like a neck shade that is removable.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaah, I'd seen the Kalahari. Yep, I'll pick one of those up. It looks very similar to the Babylon. It would be interesting to see how the neck part fixes and if it adds any bulk inside the rim. I'll give you a shout out when it goes live
@@MoorlanderEDC thank you sir!!
The whole tension of the video was, “Which one will he be wearing for the final wrap-up comments?”.
🤣 I hadn't thought about it like that. I have one on beanie hats you should watch 🤙
Thanks for your review. Been considering the Pentagon.
You're more than welcome. The Pentagon boonie is awesome. If you get one I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Look up n maybe purchase a hat called the "Shelta". It has a fixed front brim, the rest is boonie style. Front n back, long. Sides shorter. Developed by paddle boarders. They needed a shorter side brim, for paddle boarding.
Hi Kaz. I haven't seen these before however thank you for the heads up. I really like the look of these and will definitely make a purchase. I'll give you a shout out if I make some content on one 👍 All the best my friend
Nicely done as always 👍👍 glad to see I'm not the only one who likes those hats a lot (and as an aside has a huge head size lol ) so far I only have a no brand boonie hat in woodland camo ,had it for years and years ,and love it , next ones definitely will be the helikontex one , and the pentagon one ,with the summer coming , I now have an excuse 😁😁😁 👍👍
Hey buddy. I think you'll be very happy with those two. I'm glad to hear I helped with the excuse ✌️
Just realised, you must have a ‘boonie drawer’ at home, there can’t be many people that have one of them! 😂 Nice vid dude, very much like the pencott HT. That could be a future purchase… Great collection.
Maybe one day I'll make a few pieces of content and chose a draw for each piece of content 😂 the Helikon CPU is really nice. Highly recommended
Very cool.
Thank you for watching. Did you have a favourite?
Excellent review(s). Thank you!
You're more than welcome Eric. Glad you liked the content
Good day sir, really enjoyed the video. I've also noticed that you have the UF Pro in size XL, would you mind telling me your head circumference? 'm thinking to order one too, but heard that the are kinda small... greetings from Germany :)
Hi Chris, hope you're well my friend. Always happy to help. My head is roughly 59 to 60cm depending on how hot I am. This hat fits perfectly with a little bit of slack that you can pick up with the bungie cord. Such a great hat. All the best from across the sea 🤙
Do you have a Propper Boonie yet? These are lit but hard to get as most other good fitting boonies/ buckets. TacGear is also a brand that makes good boonies.
The Helikon Tex look awesome. Need to get some being that cheap. Thanks for the overview. Subbed.
Enjoyed your video. Glad to see that I'm not the only "boonie hat" collector. I'm an American veteran and thoroughly disgusted will the "posers"/stolen Valor. Having said that, the wearing of past & current U.S. camo WITHOUT any insignia doesn't really both most of us. It's the wearing any U.S. uniform, complete with all the accouterments, for illicit purposes... intentionally trying to make others believe the wearer is member of the U.S. forces. Many of us who are serious bushcrafters wear camo in the field, again minus the "extras". I purposely wear Euro camo (British DPM, French CCE, ...) so there's no doubt. And I happen to think they look better, lol. I have two Kombat UK narrow brim boonies. Good quality but sizing issues. I had to soak one in hot water and stretch it. I just got one in the post a couple days ago - Tacgear, CCE, standard size brim, made in Germany and it's great. My next will be the U.S. style in Brit DPM. P.S. the U.S. actually started with the boonie in WW2. It wasn't general issue/authorized wear for all... mainly for nurses and support type personnel in the Pacific theater, unstructured, no foliage loops. General use by U.S. personnel started with Vietnam, to present day. In my time (1990s) boonies were not general issue and wear had to be authorized by a unit CO, with the restriction of not authorized for wear in "public".
Thanks for this detailed comment. I genuinely love reading and learning about this stuff. It's despicable how people will use military gear and portray themselves as the heroes they're not. I have friends who have served that have caught out people and got into heated conversations with them.
The old DPM camo is a favourite of mine too. It's got that old school look and feel similar to the US woodland. Growing up in the 80s that was in all the films. I think even BA on the A Team used to wear it too. Thanks again for the great comment. I hope you're well and having a great week so far 👍
as a 4F mf'er iv'e always shied away from camo, as i don't really want to upset anybody. .however i like berets - comfortable in cool weather - and they just don't look right without embellishment. (also helps to remind me where the front is.) i look for pins from very old, extinct organizations. . recently got a medium blue boonie hat, so i've decorated it with a pin from the u.s. army airship service! (1911 to 1937, or thereabouts.)
Very nice and informative clip! 👏👍
🇸🇪🤜🤛🇬🇧 Glad to hear you liked it
Could i recommend a short brimmed boonie from drop zone supplies, i got mine from catterick camp so mainly bought by forces, nicely extreme cut down short brim, fits much higher on your head and the brim is shorter. I have a few from them, one which unfortunately they don’t do at the moment had a mesh top to it, which is amazing in the summer, great for summer hikes.
Thanks Steve, always looking out for new boonies. Thanks for the heads up. I'll defo look into this. I much prefer the British shorter brim over the US style hat. All the best buddy, have a cracking weekend
@@MoorlanderEDC no worries, they are primarily for the forces as opposed to the public, and almost sit on to of your head, as they are modified to suit hot weather. It's such a shame that the previous version isn't in stock anymore as the top of the hat was just a thin layer of wicking material, great for the summer, you'd love it
just thanks again... from France.
You're more thank welcome. Hope you're having a great week
@@MoorlanderEDC at the iwa 22, have you seen the new claymore bag from helikon tex? What do you think?
I did and I've been waiting for Helikon to release new on it. I love the history behind the use of the bag. GORUCK had one but they're super hard to get so this could be a great bag. Personally I like it's simplicity and think it could be a great summer bag... If they'd just release them. What did you think?
@@MoorlanderEDC i think helikon tex will release it for early fall. and yes, I also like the simple and low profil of this kind of organization.
reminds me of the gen1 crye presision boonie hat
Boonies of all shapes and sizes are welcome here. I need to up my Crye Precision game :D
Very entertaining Sir.
Thank you Bill. I hope you're well and safe buddy 👍
@@MoorlanderEDC I am wonderful.
Can't seem to find a short brim (1 inch or so) boonie hat here in the states; is that a UK thing?
Hi there. Yes, the shorter brim was definitely something the British and Ozzie troops preferred. I think the Helikon Tex hats are available on Amazon in the US if that helps, or search for 'Kombat UK' 🤙
Enjoyed this vid a second time..
Hi Ken. Glad you enjoyed it enough to watch it twice :D I like to make sure I keep things informative with a splash of Moorlandese humour
I have a very close version to the first hat you're wearing in this video, but mine has the grommets to
allow air flow. As with yours I have a plain black label with the words Poly-Cotton and it is opposite
to the seam of the hat. My question is this... Where is the front of a Boonie hat of this type?
Is it worn seam front or seam rearward?
Yes, generally I'd say the front will not have a seem or a label. Many will already have the extra cordage tided to the back too
What colour is your babylon boonie, Ranger Green Camo Green?
Thanks
Yes, it's the Ranger Green colour 💚
Which one is the most favorite?
Not sure if I have a favourite, however the ones I wear the most are the Pentagon and the Helikon-Tex hats. Hope that helps
Pentagon seems good quality👍
Great video mate, loving it as always. Usually would be Arktis for me no questions asked every time! I'm liking the Helikon and Pentagon too though, but the UfP ro looks the absolute mutts! At the risk of sounding stupid, do you think the mesh of the front top of the UfPro would let the front of your noggin get burnt?
Same as you, I'm a little in the follicly challenged department and as much as growing up in the 90's too I love a good boonie, it needs to be able to stop my bonce getting burnt too in the summer. Thanks!
This is where I'm willing to put my body... Or head on the line. I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to test this out. I'll report back on the condition of my forehead 🤣🤣🤣
@@MoorlanderEDC Always ready to risk life and limb for us subs mate! Much appreciated. 👍
@@mungo75 I got you Bro 🤜🤛
@@MoorlanderEDC any update on this?
@@travis3567 I went to Turkey this summer and it was stupidly hot. Crazy intense sun. Didn't get any sunburn wearing this. I was in and out of the pool wearing it. I always wear 50SPF so that will have helped too. Awesome hat
What's the best one for hot humid climates? I'm heading to panama and may travel the rest of central america
I'd probably go with the Helikon Tex version. It had options on there for mossie nets
Whats the pattern on the uf pro striker mate? Slocam or Flecktarn?
It's Multicam Tropical. It's really nice. One of my favourite camo patterns
@MoorlanderEDC it does look awesome, I already have a conventional usmc multicam boonie and I am looking to get this uf pro in a darker green pattern, let's see if they have this pattern available. You have all the limited edition patterns for your boonies, lol, great collection. Might wanna do another video showcasing what all you have added to the collection since this video. Good day mate.
Will the Arktis hat fit a person with a 62mm size? US size 7 3/4? I want to get an Arktis boonie like yours but it doesn’t have any extra cord to let it out if it’s too small.
Yes, I'd say the large would be ok for you. I have a large in it's on the larger side for me. They're an awesome team and get back to messaging on Facebook or Instagram really quickly. You could always message them there too for any help. All the best Malta
@@MoorlanderEDC Thanks much for the very helpful info, I sure appreciate it. Cheers!
Love your bbq in the background
Thanks, that was a present when we had our house. I dug out a fire pit in your garden during the lock downs do it doesn't get used as mush as it used to 😉 We'll have a BBQ given any excuse
Best material for full sun? Cotton or polycotton?
Hi Rusty. Sorry about the delay getting back. A very large part of me wants to say cotton, purely as it's 99.999% natural and breathable... A small but very vocal part of me prefers Polycotton. The combinations and material still feel just as soft, however they're a lot stronger. The Poly side of the mix ensure the colours stay the original colour longer as well as helping them to dry fast. I think the very few negatives of polycotton are vastly outweighed by the positives... I hope that helps buddy
@@MoorlanderEDC Same opinion. I prefer polycotton 60 cotton 40 poly ,like helion tex. Allthoug in hot Greece cotton is much much better!
@Rusty Jocsen what's the best mix for hot humid climates like costa rica? I want a short brimmed hat breathable that's not going to stink and can dry quick
I'd probably go for poly cotton too
@@dosser9565 cotton is breathable but doesnt dry quick. Polycotton 60 cotton 40 polyester should be better. Especially helikon cpu. Has a very good breathability because of the very clever places air tunnels. So i would say go for it. It is jack of all trades.i use it in hot but not humid greece a lot.
I have like 10 different boonies hat 😂
They're the best hats ever 🤘
The pentagon one is very hot in places like greece. I know, i have 2 of those. I prefer the helikon cpu 60cotton 40poly. Much better in extreme sun
Hi Rusty. I can imagine. Luckily the UK climate isnt as hot 😂... That's when it's not raining. The Helikon hat really is a great hat
Booie 2 did it for me
Check out TRU -SPES
Let me know if you do check them out
Hi Michael. I think someone has mentioned them before and I didn't make a note. I'll have a look. They seems really reasonably priced too. Thanks for the heads up. Have a great week 👍
