Scolling along... Found this vid'. My son gave me a Boonie' with a brim to large. Didnt have the heart to tell him why i dont wear it. This is my rainy day project now. Reviewed your content. Thank you. Liked and followed. From the free state of Florida!😊
*Prompt delivery with great packaging **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s the hat is just as described with the fit being perfect. Really going to enjoy using my hat.*
Great vid! I've shortened two of my boonie brims, now. One's a commercial made 'jungle tiger stripe' that resembles the pattern used by Phillipine Nav Sog. The other a Tiger Stripe products JWD clone. Both now have 1 3/4" brims and no foliage loops. I did the work after following the directions on your video, including re-attaching the brim trim (by hand-ow, my fingers!). They look like fishing hats, now, but so did John Wayne's. Thanks again.
Looking back I wish I would’ve cut the brim on mine when I was in the Army, I was by no means an operator but we had a super cool BC that loved practicality, if it made sense he allowed it. That is as long as you looked uniform in formation. Great vid brother!
Funny. In Vietnam in '70 the style was to have as wide a brim as possible, even getting the hat size a couple of sizes too big. That differentiated you from the rear echelon troops who would buy their oriental-made boonies in a local gift shop instead of being issued. Skinny brims stuck out and drew ridicule from your peers. But in all cases, the strap cord was ALWAYS worn behind the head, not under the chin.
Lol I guess Marines just didn't GAF then. It worked or it didn't. www.1strecon.org/1strecon/ReconPix/LUKYLARK.JPG Those are some tiny brims they're sporting.
I just thread a link of stainless steel safety wire inside material at the lip of the brim all the way around. Its not hard threads right in by making a small incision at the sewing point were the brim lip comes around and meets the other end. I can shape it all I want this way and I need the extra brim anyway for desert use.
It's authorised when your on exercise or operations and you get the order soft cover. You dont really want to wear a beret in a desert or high humidity environment so the bush hat is perfect. Thats how it works for the British army anyway.
How is this more practical? I thought the whole point of the brim was to protect your eyes, face, and neck from the sun. Also the brim really helps protect your face during a low crawl. Not being an ass this is a legitimate question.
Kevin Menard The newer MARPAT boonie hat in particular has an excessively large brim it's practically covering your shoulders. It's a trade off at some point. A large brim also reduces your visibility and in the end it can just look goofy. Like I mentioned it's really dependent on what you like. Thanks for watching.
A boonie or J hat is mostly there to break up your head's outline in close country. An oversized brim tends to form more unnatural straight lines and can make your head's outline easier to see. Most baggies I work with do the same thing and even get hat several sizes too small so that it sits on top of the head and allows the top of the hat to be smushed to form some natural shapes and undulation, alongside trimming them.
If you use velcro for the cat eyes you probably could even put an IR-beacon on it (haven`t done this one yet and used only my hands / marked a position with it.
British Army Special Forces bush hat is where it’s at. Correct size brim and with the added benefit of looking like a wannabe Captain Price from Call of Duty!
If I want the brim out of the way I curl it up and use the chin strap to tie it in the up position...like a double taco..or hipster cowboy hat. LOL! I like to keep the rain and sun out of my face...that's just me though. That's a good trick though!
I know that yours is an old post. "so what do ya think about adding wire to it to stiffen it up?" They make aluminum wire for electric fences, 17ga if I remember right, that would probably be better long run than solid copper or any type of steel to stiffen the brim. Just my thoughts. That safety steel wire is way to thin, you'd probably have to use a half pound of it to get the same stiffness as a few wraps of the electric fence wire.
Ok now I see what your saying.. Thanks Brother. I did this with some 550 cord.. On the back side. My wife had to do the sow is side Lol. Thanks so much for the help.. I am going to get me one and put some LED lights in there.. God bless.
+Molon Labe My personal preference is actually to fold in the sides and back of the boonie to form a baseball cap style for regular use and just fold it out for hard weather use. This works just as well with a cut boonie to if you want a regular cap from time to time.
No thank you, I really want to see you enjoy a day in the sun or rain. I'll surely be less burned or wet when it happens. The only modification you need to do is two treatments of odorless sealant spray so it's impenetrable to water.
I'm not knocking it but I don't see how it gets in your field of vision I've got a DPC jungle camo from what I can tell it's no different than just a baseball cap if I had issues with it being in my field of vision I would Pin It Up to each his own
Wow, seems like a lot of work I just sew mine over or under. Yea a dude who knows how to use a sewing machine, laugh at me all you want. Fold and go. Try practicing using a thimble. I sound gay. Good morning. Good vid.
1595pie well in the military it will vary between the services. Marines generally only can wear one when in a field environment training or combat. Navy is similar. Army is a little more lenient and I don't even know if the Air Force authorizes the boonie at all. Special Forces do what ever they want. Thanks for watching.
My dad was security forces in the Air Force and he was issued like 5 boonies. 3 of them which are mine now... I'm not sure when they're authorized to be worn, because in Security Forces you wear your beret.
+theHighDesertPioneer Air Force lets us wear them in the AoR. I've got one for each deployment. Also, some bases (upon the base commander's authorization) allow aircraft maintenance to wear them on the flight line so long as the strap is tightened under the chin.
+leo garibay If you are U.S. Armed Forces Active, Former, or Retired, you can buy one here: mcuniforms.nexweb.org/. Otherwise, you will need to pick one up from a civilian dealer. You can pick them up with a simple Google search. If you are expecting official MARPAT, make sure it has the Marine Corp logo on the face and it will have smaller logos hidden in the digital camo print.
Listen man you make some pretty reasonable videos so I don't know why you're trolling by here. I don't use, any claim, or bonifides here but I've been in the mud more than most and less than a lot of men. This is merely a technique for you to decide if it's for you or not. But if you had listened to the first 5 minutes you would know that by know.

Right on. I'm not a seamstress but I can get things to stay together. Thanks for watching.
You modified that boonie rat hat...like the LRRPs in vietnam...good job. They look sharp with shorter brim.

HAHHAHAAAA Thanks Huples. This is my UA-cam legacy. It's been all down hill ever since this video. lol

I prefer mine with the wider brim, but I gotta say you did an excellent job with that. you almost couldn't tell it didn't come that way.
I need to get you a Tilley LTM6 Multicam Hat. Last hat you will ever need. Guarantied for life. Thanks for posting brother.
That's cool wingman. These were free so they're for me. Lol
I've always thought the brim looked goofy because it was too narrow.

Wider the betterfor me. Breal up that outline.
Good tip so thanks for sharing.
Right on✌🏻
2 beer effort is my new slogan thank you sir
2014 upload and still a rocking video! Cheers mate!
Thanks. Although lots of the comments would disagree with you. Lol
@@theHDP Lol, i just finished modifying my own boonie similar to these specs! Has certainly given it new life and is much more fit for purpose! :-)

this man is straight raw with his footage
Dont put the edging back on. Take a zippo and seal the ends

Defeats the purpose of shading from sun and keeping rain off your neck. Also being floppy helps breakup your outline
Shadow cast on your face destroys your camouflage.
How is this more practical? I thought the whole point of the brim was to protect your eyes, face, and neck from the sun. Also the brim really helps protect your face during a low crawl.

You can use cat eyes on the back and sew a red cloth in the inside for signalling and as an extra pouch.
Good improvements.
If you use velcro for the cat eyes you probably could even put an IR-beacon on it (haven`t done this one yet and used only my hands / marked a position with it.
I know exactly what you are talking about. Might have to do a video on that one. Thanks for checking back in.
People in the forces mod these hats so that it does not get in the way of scopes on their issued rifle.
Good job, hat looks much better. Very informative.
British Army Special Forces bush hat is where it’s at. Correct size brim and with the added benefit of looking like a wannabe Captain Price from Call of Duty!
U S Marines designed the boonie hat brim that size for a reason.
Cool Guy the brim is either for sun or the rain
Just loop wire in the rim, it'll stiffen the brim, job done
Wow, that's a lot of hate over a guy just changing how HIS hat looks. I thought folks around these parts would like independent thinkers...guess not.
Lol
Great video, what knife are you using?
+elflakeador09 It's a Kershaw. Not sure of the exact model.
Your a jack of all trades HDP, a two beer effort...lol
That's the channel tag line rebel. I figured relating in beer will encourage people more than time. Lol

so what do ya think about adding wire to it to stiffen it up?
I want a muli-cam sombrero
I would never use metal. A zip tie I think would work well or another flat type of plastic.

Lol just trim it up. They'll never know.

When is the wear of the boonie authorized

+theHighDesertPioneer

DO NOT cut off the outer bill seam. Run a small gauge wire through that seem so as to create a bendable form-holding bill.
